Aperture and Exporting and Compression (and iPhoto)

Hello All...
I recently imported an aperture project into iPhoto to create a book for a friend. In aperture, the the photos appears as 1536px x 1024px - i.e. perfectly big enough to create a 6" x 8" softback book. However, after the import, some pics appear as 768px x 512, and some as 1024px x 680px. Now, when I load the images into the book template, it says they are to low quality.
Also, when I dragged an image from aperture to the desktop (one that is the mentioned bigger size in aperture) is saved to the desktop as the smaller size. How can I export from Aperture, preferably to iPhoto, in the original, or a big enough, size?!
Thanks,
Sam

Sam
Sounds like you're dragging files from the Media Viewer that shows up when you go File -> Show Aperture Library. This Media Viewer only contains the Previews generated in Aperture. Dragging to the desktop also gets a Preview. To get the full size pics you need to export from Aperture (File -> Export and choose the correct Export settings) and import to iPhoto.

  • Can I edit a rough cut in the FCPX timeline  and export without compression

    Hi,
I know this probably is a simple question for those in the know, I have some footage shot on a Canon 5D Mark 2 and I want to bring it into the FCPX timeline without transcoding ie leaving it in its native file format H264 then clean it up and export it out of FCPX without any compression leaving it as I found it, I need to give this footage to another editor and I don't want him to see all my bad camera moves just the diamonds in the rough
Appreciate if anyone could answer this?

HI Tom, thanks for the reply, I was afraid of that, I did not know you could do limited trimming in the QT PLayer, this might just help me out

  • Premiere Pro CS6 Render and Export Screen Glitch and Freeze

I use Premiere Pro CS6 on a 2012 Macbook Retina display - 16GB RAM, 751GB Flash Storage, NVIDIA GeForce 650m Graphics Card, 2 External 4TB hardrives for scratch disks, Thunderbolt connection. When I try to render and export videos I often get a graphical glitch like in the pic shown below and my computer freezes. It happens very often, especially when there are a lot of effects in the videos - I use the GenArts Sapphire plugin often.
This has been going on basically since I bought my Macbook 2 years ago, but it is starting to become more and more common -  considering this was the most expensive Macbook Pro you could buy I am very annoyed with this - even on some videos where I have applied no plugin effects or any color correction it happens, especially when trying to export videos.
Any help on this issue would be appreciated.

I am having precisely the same problem as bricklaneeditor, and have exactly the same setup: MBP early 2011, 16GB RAM, 512 GB SSD,
    30" ACD, Mac OS 10.7.4 , PPro 6.0.1
Indeed, a restart of Premiere Pro always fixes the problem -- for a while.  I've also seen similar behavior in Media Composer 6.0.1 once or twice so am wondering whether it's an issue with this machine/OS, as the playback software architectures are so different on those two NLE's.
I should also mention that the problem is not isolated to any particular file format -- have seen it with timelines containing 7D footage, HDV and ProRes files.
I strongly suspect some sort of problem on either Apple's or Adobe's end with the GPU in this machine, as it is ATI and not Nvidia -- and is, as far as I know, the only non-CUDA GPU, at least on the Mac side, certified to work with the CS6 Mercury Playback Engine.
Also wondering whether an over-the-top or a clean install of Mountain Lion might shake things up enough to make a difference.  (Otherwise I'm in no big hurry to upgrade my OS.)  Is anyone seeing this problem with PPro under 10.8?  Might be worth installing 10.8 over an external HDD clone of the System drive and booting temporarily from the clone just to see if the problem persists in Premiere.
Anyone have any thoughts on these possibilities?

  • Adding and  exporting caption info in iPhoto 11

I recently installed iLife 11 and am frustrated by 2 issues: 1) the apparent inability to increase the size of the box used to enter caption information, and 2) the inability to export caption information along with a photo or photos. Previous versions of iPhoto allowed users to do both of these things. Any suggestions?

That feature has been left out of iPhoto 11. Send a feature request to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.

  • Importing and Exporting Video VHS and MiniDV

I just recently purchased an iMac 27-inch 3.1GHz (2TB Serial ATA Drive / 256GB Solid State Drive / 16GB Memory). I am interested in converting my family videos from my Sony camcorder (MiniDV) and VHS/DVD player.
I would prefer not to spend tons of money but I don't want poor quality either.
I have the Adobe Master Collection with the video software components. I can't recall since I am not at my computer if I have Final Cut (maybe it's Aperture I am thinking of). I have Toast Titanium but I would need to upgrade to the Pro version for better video components (but maybe I don't need to use it either).
What are some of the ways I can convert VHS and MiniDV cassettes to store it digital on my iMac or created a DVD disc?

  • Send to Speedgrade and Export EDL problems

So I'm working on a small series. I've got a final cut on Premiere Pro, and having already tested out Speedgrade I would like to use that for my final color correction and export. However I'm running into problems I'd never run into before. First the "Send to Speedgrade" option. When I use Send to Speedgrade, having my sequence selected, for some reason it is only exporting the audio and not the video. Once Speedgrade opens all I have is the .wav in the timeline from my sequence, but nothing else, all on one track. I've tried making sure my video was all on one track in Premiere Pro, and exported the audio and re-imported to put that on a single track in Premiere Pro as well, but still no joy. Seems strange cause I've never had this issue.
So I tried the export as EDL function, which never seems to work cause certain "edits" are not supported (even though it's just simple cuts.) In another forum I found out the issue can also be with the audio, so I tried to cut the audio from my sequence in Premiere Pro, export as EDL, and then open up that within Speedgrade, and importing the aformentioned audio track separately on the speedgrade timeline. This lets me open the EDL no problem (no red error message) and then reconnect the reels using my desktop, but my issue then becomes the audio. I can bring the audio in fine, but I didn't count on the fact that when I rebuild the reels it uses the audio from the original files as well. (obviously I can mute the track, as I just realized that simple fix while writing this issue up, but I still feel like I might be doing something wrong - because when I try to consolidate all the audio/video onto two separate tracks in Premiere Pro, it'll let me open the EDL I export into speedgrade, but the audio is still not showing up unless I import that separately.)
Anyway this is just weird as I never ran into these problems before. They might be first version issues that have been resolved, but I refuse to update speedgrade because everytime I do it crashes on startup, and no one has helped me with that previous issue, and despite my best efforts at resolving it using the forums I haven't had any luck.

Regarding the problem when you "Send to Speedgrade" and only the audio shows up, I just worked through the same problem (Premiere Pro CC 7.01)
You need to make sure the "work area bar" is selected around your timeline that you want to send to Speedgrade. If it has disappeared mysteriously (as it did for me), simply double-click where it usually shows up and it will reappear, with in and out points set to the extents of your timeline. Then send to Speedgrade and the video is sent along with the audio. Seems like a bug, or at least something that can be better documented. Though I suspect this workflow has changed in 7.1 ...
    Cheers

  • Premier Elements 7 and exporting to Xvid?

    Hi
iv recently produced a few different 3D animations and have rendered them all out to .tga's. now using PE7 i simply want to export them out to Xvid. However no matter what setting I use within Xvid the final file does not play correctly in media player. It is un-smooth and choppy, with some artefacts.
Ive come across a couple of things in this forum about Xvid, stating that it has problems and such, but is it actually incompatible with PE7?
I have a work colleague who uses PE4 and exports to Xvid and only encounters minor problems, but he can still get his final files to play smoothly.
Is there any thing I can do to fix this, or is it just an unavoidable compatibility problem?
I have the latest version of Xvid. On a quad 2.4 GHz system, with 3 GB Ram.
Any help would be great, thanks.
    Rob

I export out to a Microsoft AVI, No audio. Then I use the Xvid MPEG-4 codec, with millions of colours.
It is at a wide screen resolution so 1280 x 720
The Xvid codec is set to maximum quality (although iv tried it at various different qualities and got the same problem)
The display encoding status windows instantly crashes PE7 so that is disabled.
With the profile @ level set to HighDef (but im not sure what this actually does, it was just left as default)
    Done and 25Fps
    To a square pixel ratio
With a maintain data rate recompress selection.
I think this is all I can tell you. Unless there is some vital part I am overlooking.
    Thanks

  • None of my apple apps can export files, including Mail, iPhoto, Aperture and Preview.

None of my apple apps can export files, including Mail, iPhoto, Aperture and Preview. When I try to export a file from any of these programs, the app hangs for a few seconds and then does nothing, not even open an export dialogue. Same thing happens when I try to attach a file to an email. Also, maybe related and maybe not, Photoshop will crash after the splash screen. All of these app function properly when using a different User Account.
I've tried deleting my application preferences in my user library and when that didn't work, I deleted my account and then created a new one that used the same user directory, which still didn't fix anything.
I don't really want to make a new user from scratch and have to re-enter license numbers, re-calibrate monitors, recover bookmarks, contancts, etc. etc. if I don't have to, so I would be grateful for any advice.
    Thanks!

  • IPhoto questions - resizing and exporting

Hi there - I have a couple of questions surrounding iPhoto and resizing images.
    1) I want to use my original file - as I first imported it. Most of my images when imported were 2-3MB files. When I export them out of iPhoto, I have a number of options in regards to quality and size. When I exported best quality and maximum size, the file became twice the size of the original (around 5MB). How do I just use the original as it was imported?
    2) When I right click on an image saved onto my desktop and look at 'get info' it tells me what I believe is the actual size of my image - usually around 2.4MB. However, when I open it in Preview and go to tools/adjust size it gives me a 'resulting size' which is much less than what I see when I open the 'get info' option (around 1.5MB). Does anyone know anything about why this is?
    3) I understand the 'myth' surrounding dpi but is there any reason WHY everything is opening at 72dpi when other programs have opened my images at 300dpi?
Many thanks in advance for your help
    Sarah

have you tried exporting with no option? the final size depends on lot of things (and no matter how big it is it will not be better than the original

Actual size would be large - think TIFF size - all JPEG sized re compresses - more compression means slightly less quality and smaller size
    3) I understand the 'myth' surrounding dpi but is there any reason WHY everything is opening at 72dpi when other programs have opened my images at 300 dpi?
Because DPI has not meaning until there are inches associated with the image - it is a meaningless number

Raws, even if not compressed, Sould be smaller than a 24-bit Tiff, since they have only one bitplane. My T3i shoots 14 bit 18MP raws and has a raw file size of 24.5 MB*. An uncompressed Tiff should have a size of 18 MP x 3 bytes per pixel or 54 MB.
*There must be some lossless compression going on since 18 MP times 1.75 bytes per pixel is 31.5MB for uncompressed raw.

  • Exporting slide show from iPhoto to QT raises contrast and darkens images?

I have been using iPhoto to create slide shows (with transitions) which I then save as QuickTime (.mov) files. I add soundtracks to the QT.mov file in QuickTime Pro and burn the finished slide show to CD's for my friends and coworkers.
The original photographic image files come from several sources; mostly a digital camera, but often scanned color slides (from the dim, distant past). All of the images have been (painstakingly!) corrected in PhotoShop, and saved as finished size Jpeg files.
When I import the images into iPhoto, edit and arrange them in a folder and preview the show as a slideshow in iPhoto, the images still look perfect.
When I save the show by exporting it to QuickTime, all of the images get darkened and the image contrast increased.
    This is making me nuts.
To quantify the unwanted "enhancement" that iPhoto seems to be applying to my images, I experimented in PhotoShop; I can make the original (correct) image match the "QT enhanced" image by decreasing the "Lightness" slider by -8 to -12, and increasing the "Contrast" slider by +11 (in whatever units PhotoShop sliders are calibrated).
The resulting change in the images is infuriating: the darkening increases the color saturation and blocks up the shadow details so that many images are unusable.. black skin tones, for example, become a dark red/brown color with an unnatural gradation from light to dark.
Further experimentation using IDVD and QuickTime slide shows (without transitions) made from sequencial files directly in QT seem to indicate that the problem is not in QuickTime itself, but rather in the transition from iPhoto to QuickTime when I export the finished folder as a slide show.
It seems like iPhoto is "enhancing" or "tweaking" the images as it exports them to QuickTime: It adds contrast and reduces brightness, both of which might serve to add "snappiness" to a lot of generic snapshots that people shoot, but my images have already been fixed (thank you) and really don't need anyone's generic "tweak"
Does anyone know what it's doing, and more importantly to me, how do I turn the damned thing off?
G5 dual 2.3Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Terabytes of disc space.

iPhoto can make two different types of slide show movies. It would help to know which you're making.
One is made via the File/Export to QuickTime movie and makes a 4 track file with a simple fade effect. These use the Photo-JPEG codec.
The other is a 30 fps "video" using H.264 video codec via the "Share" menu.
A third method (rarely used) is to Export to iDVD. This makes an absurdly high data rate MPEG-4 video. This is also found under the Share menu.
The MPEG-4 video codec also includes an "automatic" gamma correction feature which compensates for the gammas difference between Mac's and PC's.
Try one export to iDVD. Include your audio track prior but use a high quality (.aiff) sound file. No need to actually "burn" the DVD. You can even close iDVD after it opens. You'll find the new movie in your Users Movie folder.
Open it with QT Pro and export to a new .mov file. Adjust the data rate to something more reasonable and add some audio compression.
If the colors still look too dark you can use the built in Filters in the Export dialog. You can adjust B&C or HSL or even use ColorSync Profiles that can help correct the image quality (if needed).

  • I just noticed that I can no longer select photos out of my finder that are located in my Aperture/Iphoto Library.  I used to be able to attach photos to my gmail out of the aperture library in the finder and for some reason, no longer can.

I just noticed that I can no longer select photos out of my finder that are located in my Aperture/Iphoto Library.  I used to be able to attach photos to my gmail out of the aperture library in the finder and for some reason, no longer can.
I can't access these images except to go into the applications.
Also, I'd like to import my iphoto library into aperture, and move aperture library to an external drive.  I tried the import first, but there wasn't enough space.  Then I tried copying over the aperture library onto the external drive but it failed bc it said file was in use.
As it is, I only have 50gb left on my imac, and the aperture library is 150gb.  Also, I have over 10k images in both libraries combined and there are tons of duplicates that need to be sorted, and hopefully not messed up because I've organized most of them.
So in short, I need to know how to do the following:
-select photos in finder in aperture/iphoto libraries
-move aperture library to live on external drive
-import iphoto library into aperture library
    -eliminate dups but maintain organization
-moving forward i need a better workflow so that I import images from camera, and can organize right away into albums rather than creating projects by default and then creating albums so essentially the photos are in 2 different places, even tho they are referenced
    -live happily ever after
Thanks in advance for any support you can offer!!

If you're using apps like iPhoto or Aperture then they replace the Finder for managing your photos. The point is that you use the (many) options available via these apps for the things you want and need to do with the Photos.
So, simply, you don't select the photos in the Finder. I'll append the supported ways to do this - which are faster and will yield the current version of your Photos - to the end of this post.
-move aperture library to live on external drive
Managed or Referenced Library? Managed -
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit Aperture
    2. Copy the Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching Aperture. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Referenced -  relocate your Masters first.
These issues are covered in the Manual and on this forum hundreds of times.
-import iphoto library into aperture library
FIle -> Import -> iPhoto Library? Have you done this already? If so are you trying to move the Masters to Aperture from an  iPhoto Library? Or Consolidate them?
-moving forward i need a better workflow so that I import images from camera, and can organize right away into albums rather than creating projects by default and then creating albums so essentially the photos are in 2 different places, even tho they are referenced
You can't. Every photo is in a Project.  They’re the basic building blocks of the Library.
You might want to spend a little time with the manual or the video tutorials. I'm not sure you've grasped the app  you've purchased.
The following is written for iPhoto, but about 97% works for Aperture too.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto/ APerture:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics. This is what you use to attach your shot to your GMail
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto/ Aperture.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto/ Aperture not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
