Aperture for a Powerbook G4?

Hi! I have a powerbook G4 - 17" - Leopard and I´m planning to buy shortly a Macbook pro. However before I do I´m testing new applications in order to figure what applications I want for my new mac.
I´m using photoshop and iphoto, but I read great things about Aperture and I want to have more control over my librarians, since I cannot yet test the Aperture 3, I try to find an older version to test but so far no luck...maybe I am blind or? can someone please send me a link to a download that will work with my G4? Thanks so much!

Aperture 2 is no longer available for download from Apple's site; you will have to find an old boxed copy somewhere.
I'll note though that performance on a PowerBook G4 won't be great: The graphics on the machine just aren't all that. It's over 4 years old now and Aperture likes itself Intel and a better GPU, let's just say that.
Anyway if you want to try it out, you will have to buy a boxed copy.

  • Aperture 2 and PowerBook G4

I'm considering buying Aperture 2 for my PowerBook G4. I've looked at the specs and, while my machine is listed under minimum requirements, it is not under the recommended configurations.
Will Aperture 2 run on my PowerBook, or will it be glacial in speed and basically unusable? I know that it won't perform with optimal speed on my machine. I'm just trying to figure out if it is worth the money, as I can't replace the machine at this time.

I've been running Aperture 2 on my PowerBook G4 since it came out. It's not particularly fast, especially if you're shooting RAW and working with images that are regularly >10MB in size. Also, I strongly recommend that you have more than the typical recommendation of 10% free hard disk space (that's after installing Ap2). I've been hovering at about 10% free space, and things have gotten noticeably slower.

  • Where can I find a restore disc for a PowerBook G4?

Where can I find a restore disc for a PowerBook G4?

The detailed problem is that I had used the computer for a long time without turning off.  I wanted to give it to someone else so I needed to clean the data off. Before deleting anything I switched off then on and the HD seemed to have developed a fault as the start up routine began then when the Hd started the computer crashed and restarted at the begining with the startup routine and I have not been able to go further than this.  I changed the HD for an old one that I had replaced previously which had the same software system, Leopard.  This worked perfectly but on switching off then on behaved as the other had.
I figured that if I could start with the restore disc I could clean the HD or at least investigate it.  Hence the need for a restore disc.
Would this work or is there something in the logic board that is upsetting the HD and what ever I do will not cure the problem.
    Any thoughts??

  • Where can i buy an airport extreme card for my powerbook

Where can I buy an airPort extreme caed for my powerbook? are they even available, if not how can I go wireless ?

eBay is a good source, though as ever, buy wisely and make sure you get the right card for your specific model.
Alternatively there are wireless cards available that go in the card slot. Again eBay is full of them but be sure they're OSX compatible -  its a good idea to put this phrase in your search terms.
I can vouch that this one works as I'm using it now:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SAGEM-PCMCIA-AIRPORT-54MBPS-WIRELESS-WIFI-CARD-MAC-OS-X-/4 00124141388?pt=UK_Computing_Apple_Mac_Accessories&hash=item5d2941df4c#ht_3229wt_ 886
It just plugged straight in and was recognised as an Airport Card. This is from the UK site but I'm sure you can find the same thing wherever you live, or at that price just have it shipped.

  • New Draft-N Card for Legacy PowerBook (PPC based)

Any words yet or recommendation on a wireless card for legacy PowerBook (PPC-based) systems? I know the newer systems have the updated AirPort Extreme (using the Draft-N enabler), but what about others who have older PowerBooks with a user-installable card. Will Apple be creating a new wireless card for use in these systems? Or is there a 3rd Party compliant card to use in the PC Slot of the PB G4 that is Draft-N and works with the new AirPort Extreme base station N?

    I doubt it.
When Airport was upgraded the last time (from 802.11b to 802.11g), the older hardware was stuck with integrated cards that could not be upgraded.
Is this Apple being mean? Not really.
The new n hardware needs two or three antennas to work. Older laptops with 802.11g have only one antenna built into the case - so you can't simply upgrade the card.
The only way to upgrade is if a third-party manufacturer produces a mac-compatible version. Which could happen. But it would be the sort of card that sticks out of the PC-Card slot.
It's not ideal, but remember that laptops get upgraded all the time, and you can't upgrade the processor or the screen either.

  • External Monitor for G4 Powerbook

I would like to get a larger (19-23") monitor for my PowerBook G4 1.33 GHz laptop. There is a ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 built in, so what Apple monitor is compatible? It sounds like the Cinema Displays all need some sort of specific Graphics card that I don't have (can I install one?).
    thanks.

I have a 9700 in my 1.5Ghz PowerBook and it works fine with a 23" and 30" Cinema Displays, I would think that your 9600 would work as well.

  • How can I know the extact model of burner for my powerbook?

If I want to buy a new burner for my powerbook, how can do I know the exact specs to order it. My computer is a PowerBook G4 17", Machine Model 5,9 Titanium. And where can I buy one so I can install it myself. Please, it´s urgent. Thankyou.

Hi, Alex. Your Powerbook is not Titanium but Aluminum. There was never any 17" Titanium PB.
The model of your current optical drive will be shown in System Profiler and in Disk Utility. But because your Powerbook is now a four-year-old model, the drive in it is probably discontinued now, and there are newer, better, more versatile drives with which you could replace it. A good source for one is OWC:

  • Photos app vs Aperture, for adepts?

    Hi guys,
Are all Aperture adjustment tools available to a semi-adept like myself who migrates to the Photos app? Can I adjust my images in Photos to the same level of precision and have as many options (and stay within the Apple universe), or do I have to look elsewhere, like Lightroom? I need high-end software.
I'm offered a Beta version, but not sure whether it's for me. BTW, I have just installed Yosemite and am keeping my fingers crossed.
    Thanks,
    Raphael

    Hi Raphael,
With the _coming_ demise of Aperture, users are either:
    - staying with Aperture for a bit: it works well; migrating the database is, _at best_, tricky, incomplete, and inefficient; Aperture will continue to work well under Yosemite for as long as you have a Mac running Yosemite, or
    - using another program/programs for the digital asset management and digital camera image editing that they used to do in Aperture.
Those who are moving are either:
    - putting only or mostly new/recent digital camera files into another program(s), and developing a workflow with the other program(s), or
    - porting all of their Originals, all of their adjusted Versions, and as much of the database as possible into another program.
The other programs that are most often mentioned as being useful to Aperture users are:
    - Adobe's Lightroom.  Functional overlap with Aperture is nearly 100%.  Widely used.  More support and resources than you can use.  Aperture users general don't like being constrained by a modal interface, and don't like the actual interface.
    - Capture One Pro.  Functions similar to Aperture.  Well-liked by those who use it.  Strong editing tools.  Less strong digital asset management tools.  Very much smaller installed user base.  Imho, a more Aperture-like experience than LR.
    - Apple Photos for OS X.  Properly understood as the successor program to iPhoto (it is _not_ a successor to Aperture).  The design emphasis is on ease of use.  Adequate editing tools.  Strong but non-customizable digital asset management tools.
All three feature non-destructive workflows (your digital camera files are never over-written).  All of them — like Aperture — store _the information needed to create new files_, rather than new files themselves.

If I am to switch, I would like to switch to a software that is elegantly thought out, that offers at least as much control as Aperture does, and that is widely supported and understood; and that has a forum like this one with competent people responding.
    An excellent list.  Imho:
    - LR is the least elegant of the three.
    - LR and C1Pro offer as much editing control as Aperture.  Neither offers as much digital asset management options/utility.
    - All are (or will be) well supported.  LR is much more used and discussed, and has many more supporting materials available, than any of the others.
    - This forum provided — not just my opinion, and something I'm proud of — a rare combination of quick response, high-quality content, and little chaff.  There are (afaik) good forums for both LR and for C1Pro.

  • Lightroom for Mac, PowerBook G4, Operating system OS X 10.2

    Hello all
Is there a version of Lightroom that can be downloaded for Mac, PowerBook G4, Operating system OS X 10.2. I have tried Lightroom 1.1 but that needs 10.4 or above. Any advice is appreciated.

No way. A lot of the system-level things that LR requires are 10.4 only.
Time to upgrade your machine ;-)

  • Best use of Aperture for Graphic Designer

I am new to Aperture. I had been browsing my images and photos in Bridge but doing all editing in Photoshop. In Aperture I will be using Referenced instead of Managed.
I am a graphic designer, and edit, create, handle a large amount of images which is my primary usage. I also have need for comparison, as well as archival browsing of the work in one place. I am handling stock images, images I create, client jobs, etc. My jobs often involve photos sent to me by the client, and any photos I take (camera or iPhone) can be downloaded to camera app or even iPhoto, or Aperture now if one is better than the other.
I am aware that Aperture does not mirror the Finder therefore when I make any changes (either in or outside of Aperture) or add anything to the folder in Finder, Aperture is not updated. Is there any way to have this be in sync with the content on the hard drive? Or just import the corrections back into Aperture? or does it matter?
So I am wondering whether to just use Aperture for new image / photo editing and adjustments then export the corrected photos to the hard drive? Then for any future browsing of old content use Bridge?
The other thought rolling around in my head is since I already keep a well-organized folder structure outside of Aperture, I don't know the need for re-organizing / moving things around in Aperture. I think it is great that it has the flexibility for that, and perhaps I would think of a reason for doing so.
I am pondering the best use of this app for my purposes and would appreciate your experienced thoughts. Thank you!

If you decide to use Aperture to edit your images then you should consider to use Aperture as Digital Asset Management System as well. Aperture is very versatile, and any mixed setup Finder - Aperture sooner or later will lead to trouble.
You do not need to fall back on the Finder, if you want to use Photoshop or another Editor for editing in edition to Aperture. If you launch your Editor as external editor from inside Aperture, then the edits will be updated in the Aperture database, there is no extra synching necessary.

  • 2GB RAM too much for 1Ghz Powerbook?

    Hi
In order to speed up my G4 17" 1 Ghz Powerbook, especially for Photoshop Elements, I upgraded to 2GB RAM. The Crucial Memory Scanner said that was the max allowable (although I ended up buying Samsung memory from an eBay dealer). My computer seems to be actually working slower now, though it is basically working ok. On looking at the tech spec for my Powerbook from Apple Support I then found this: "two SO-DIMM slots support up to 1GB".
Have I put in too much RAM now (who is right about my memory capacity - Apple or Crucial?), or does it make a difference that I bought cheaper RAM than Crucial or Kingston for example? (Presumably if the RAM was suspect I'd have bigger problems?)
Excuse the scattergun questions - I'm just trying to work out if I'd be better off reinstalling my original pair of 512MB modules, or leave in the 2GB and look at other issues in my computer for improving speed.
    Many thanks.

To add to eww's excellent advice, there is a note on my RAM vendor's website page for your PowerBook stating that the 17" G4 1G PowerBook is one of four PowerBooks that uses "bus slewing" and have special RAM requirements.
I recall a couple of years ago there was a little...well, call it a "public disagreement" for lack of a cruder term....among RAM vendors over bus slewing and the right RAM. Crucial was accused in these forums and by other companies of failing to recognize the requirements bus slewing placed on the RAM. However, this seems to have settled down as I see posts here stating more recent Crucual RAM worked. You could call Crucial and ask if the part number you bought supports bus slewing. I'm sure they will make certain you get the correct type from them.
Oops, nearly forgot! Bus slewing is explained in this Apple Technical paper on the 15" 1 G PowerBook. Scroll down about a half page to the section "Processor and Bus Slewing."

The message requesting that you download Adobe Flash Player takes you to FP requireing an Intel processor. Doesn't work on a PowerPC processor. I fould a hack, installed it & it works with Firefox, TenFourFox & Safari.
Download this http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip to your desktop, unzip it, and replace the current Flash Player plug-in which is in your main/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, (not the user Library). Save the old one just in case this one doesn't work.
