Aperture RAW support now independent of OSX?

When 10.5.2 arrived yesterday, it added RAW support for several new cameras to the OS, but not to Aperture 1.5.
Now, according to the new Aperture 2 pages, "* Cameras and camera backs followed by an asterisk require Aperture 2 with Mac OS X Tiger v10.4.11 or Mac OS X Leopard v10.5.2 or later."
10.4.11 did not include support for these new cameras, so this leads me to the likely conclusion that support for new RAW formats must now be internal to Aperture. i.e. It is NOT using the RAW support in OSX 10.5.2, but its own internal codebase instead.
If this is indeed true, does it mean we can expect speedier RAW updates for Aperture in the future? That would certainly be nice.

no doubt about this!
it was short sighted to have allowed aperture to rely on the OS for RAW file support. as a result, this positioned aperture in poor regards. now it looks like all these are now yesterday stuff, because with version 2 i'm able to import, view, and edit my ricoh g100 raw files. i couldn't do this with version 1.5, even with mac os x 10.5.2. so the current version is, i think, heading off in a good direction for aperture users.

  • Aperture Raw Support

I've got a Canon 7D and have found that Aperture does recognise the format when is the raw file going to be updated?
    Thanks

You're obviously new around here. Aperture is not a program for early adopters of cameras. Raw support for Nikon and Canon cameras typically ships within a few months of the camera shipping.
And support for a whole load of cameras never arrives at all. That is how Aperture is and how it has been for some years now, and I don't suppose it will change any time soon. If it is important to you to have RAW support for a wide range of cameras, then Aperture is really useless to you.

  • Aperture raw support sony dsc-rx100

Do you know when Aperture will support raw (*.arw) files from Sony DSC-RX100.

Slightly off topic but since a few people have the camera already, has anyone tried the RX100 with the ipad camera connector?  Speculation is that it won't work, because the RX100 tried to pull power for charging its internal camera battery via USB, so the ipad error's out (doesn't like the attempted power draw) rather than importing the pictures (kind of like connecting a blackberry via the camera kit, in an attempt to download pictures from the blackberry, but not being able to do so since the blackberry wants to pull power via the USB port, too).

  • Aperture RAW support web page error?

I have Aperture 3.4.5, which, according to Apple (apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html) is supposed to support the ARW files from the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II, but it doesn't.  Why isn't this working and how do I contact Apple to have it fixed?

That camera has been introduced by the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.08:

  • HT3946 Does Aperture RAW support the Sony NEX-5R digital camera?

If I have the Sony NEX-5R digital camera will this allow me to use the updated Aperture 3 and it's RAW feature?

Here is the list of supported cameras OS X Mountain Lion: Supported digital camera RAW formats
The Sony NEX-5R was included in Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.0.2 so if you are running the most recent versions of Aperture and Mountain Lion you should be covered.

  • Raw support for Olympus OMD E-M10, When ?

I purchased a Olympus OMD E-M10 camera few weeks ago. Bad surprise when I loaded my shoots in Aperture ... Raw files not supoorted !
After the 5.05 update for raw compatibilty ... again a bad surprise ! The Olympus OMD E-M10 is not in the list of supported cameras :-(
When my E-M10 will be supported by Aperture ??????

This is always true when a new camera is introduced.
    I own the OM-D10.
My work around is to shoot in Raw + JpegSF. Import both into Aperture and set Jpeg as master.
If I need to use the Raw, I go to Olympus View 3. So far the Jpeg's have been perfect for my use. Please note that you have to go to a sub-menu to activae JpegSF.
Another website compared using Adobe's Raw converter to Olympus View 3 converter for OM-D1 files. The Olympus conversion was far superior.
So I do want Aperture Raw support. However, I am not sure how much I will use it.

  • Nikon D300S Raw Support

    Please, Apple.....
Why so slow when it comes to RAW support for new professional camera models? Nearly a month ago, Nikon has updated one of their best selling pro DX-cameras - the D300, with the D300S model.
Adobe promptly released RAW-support for this camera..... while Aperture still greet images from the Nikon D300S as "Unsupported File Format"?
I am aware of the work-around with the use of Adobe´s converter (or Nikon Transfer) but it is still an inconvenience and bug in our workflow.
So, (pretty) please, Apple – why don´t you keep an eye on the camera market and follow up with timely updates of Aperture RAW support!
    M. B.

Ahh the omni-present "when will Aperture support" thread....
I just thought of a great way to make some money here...I would be willing to bet just about anything that Aperture would support ALL Nikon DSLRs that Nikon continues to build...WHY?
Simply because when it comes to Nikon they have done so consistently. Those new to the forum can search D300 support or D3 support and see identical messages from a couple of years ago.
I would say Apple's average to respond to a new build is about 90 days, and then they typically release for a few cameras at once in an update.
Oh and finally, Nikon's top-of-the-line is my D3x, NOT the new D3s, and yes, Aperture supports it. I am 100% sure the D3s will be there soon as well.
Of course you can find this same thread from a while back if you search D3x. Less so though, because due to limited availability I was not able to get one for a while after announcement since I did not pre-order, so I think for me it was about a week or so after I had it that Aperture supported it. Lesson here would be pre-ordering a camera is not very useful if your workflow solution won't be supporting it immediately.
On a sad note...I am still waiting for the Leica D-LUX 4 support, and that has been more than a year...but it looks like Leica/Panasonic chose to include lens distortion data in their RAW file, and I am assuming Aperture is not equipped to handle that. Many of the programs who "support" the RAW file DO NOT have any lens correction applied, and the jpg vs. RAW looks different. I don't consider that support, and I bet Aperture did not want to open themselves up to complaints by only partially converting the RAW data. Fortunately the D-LUX 4 has the best jpgs I have ever seen from any camera, and are typically quite usable without major tweaking.

  • RAW support for Pentax K3

When will Aperture RAW support be updated for Pentax K3 be added?  It's already on Adobe Lightroom....!

I my exeprience, I'd say when it's ready and not a moment sooner.
Lightroom is always pretty quick off the mark with support, but sometimes that carries a quality cost, like happened with the Fuji X100 and X-Trans sensors. Lightroom's support came out first, but Aperture's came out better.
I have a similar frustration having just bought a Sony A7. But I simply shoot raw+JPEG and use the JPEGs until the raw support is ready.
A side benefit of this approach is it makes you get to know the camera settings a little better in order to make the best JPEG.
If I have an emergency and really messed up a shot and need the raw to recover it, I use the raw converter supplied with the camera to make a better conversion in a TIFF and then add that to Aperture.

  • Aperture has stopped recognizing RAW from my Canon SL1. It now displays "Unsupported Format. According to Apple Aperture should support RAw from the SL1.

I have 3.4.4 installed. Yesterday Aperture recognized RAW from my SL1; today it does not. I have already deleated the plist and repaired permissions to no avail. Suggestions.

I'm stymied at this point. I would like to try to redownload Aperture, but the APPStore will not allow it. In any case before I would do that I'd need to know how to reclaim my libraries after reinstalling.
If Aperture is installed, you cannot redownload it from the AppStore. Move it to the Trash, but do not empty the Trash, open the AppStore and sign in. If Aperture is not showing on the "Purchased" tab, reload the page with ⌘R. Now you should be able to reinstall Aperture, if you bought it originally from the AppStore.
But in this case, I think reinstalling the system would be more promissing. Tonight a new version of Mt. Lion has been released. Perhaps running the Software update will activate the new raw support again.
Some voodoo - I am not sure at all, if this can help in this case: With MacOS X 10.7.4 it sometimes helped to register the raw support for your camera with the launch services database - maybe this old problem has reoccured.
See this post by Alan Roseman:

  • Lumix LX3 RAW support - Aperture update 2-10-2010

So I was all excited to see that Aperture would finally support LX3 RAW files, so I took a bunch yesterday and guess what...it doesn't work.
Can someone tell me why the update listed the RAW support for the Lumix LX3 RAW ?

I downloaded your link to the upgrade again, it installed but still doesn't work.
Of course not. As I said above
Are you using Aperture 3 or iPhoto 09?
They're the requirements as made clear here...
You need to be using Aperture 3.
    I am using 2.1.4 on OSX 10.6.2
And it will never work with Aperture 2.

  • Will Aperture 3.6 eventually provide raw support to Sony a5100

I have an iMac running OS X Maverick 10,9,5, and currently use Aperture 3.5.1 with all of its latest RAW updates.  I am considering updating to Yosemite to get Aperture 3.6.  I note that so far 3.6 does not provide RAW support to the Sony a5100.  Lightroom does have RAW support for this camera, and I can get Lightroom and keep Maverick.  However, I like Aperture and would like to continue using it.  But will the new version on Yosemite ever get RAW support for my camera?  I also see from other posts that many are having problems with both Yosemite and with Aperture 3.6.  I would need some reassurance before taking the step to a new OS X.  I need some advice about what to do.
    Thanks

But will the new version on Yosemite ever get RAW support for my camera?
We cannot tell you this, but any new Raw Support will most likely only be available on Yosemite.
The latest Digital Raw Compatibility Update was only for Yosemite, Aperture 3.6, and iPhoto 9., see:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1777?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
I need some advice about what to do.
Upgrade, but don't burn your bridges. I'd keep a full TimeMachine backup or a bootable clone of your system as it is now, so you can easily revert to the previous version.

  • Aperture 2.x Raw support

Is Aperture 2 still a Apple supported product or has it been made unsupported as of 3.0? Aperture 3.0 now has Raw support for Canon 60D and other cameras but aperture 2.1.4 still refuses to load the files from a Canon 60D even with the latest Raw and security updates installed as of the 10th Nov.
am I forced to spend £80 to upgrade or should I wait for apple to pull their finger out?

aha, thanks. I see the double asterisk now
I was looking at the support page describing 10.6.5

it doesn't mention version-specific support in Aperture as does the page you referenced. I guess an upgrade to v3 is necessary

  • No Nikon D3100 raw support with Aperture 2

I have Aperture 2, and have recently bought a Nikon D3100. All updates have been made, and I am able to see the raw files with Preview. But they are still not recognized by the Aperture 2 application.
Is it a bug? What gives?

With all due respect this has nothing to do with "gaming". LR2 users can't update to ACR6 either, same situation.
I feel frustrated. Now I'll have to start using other application, since I will not continue to invest on an application that does not update raw support and tries to game me into upgrading.
So you're willing to buy a whole new application instead of paying for the $99 upgrade? And this application will offer you lifetime support for any new camera bodies, no upgrades required, ever? Hmm...
It's the reality of software: at some point, you need to upgrade. Like it or not.
The advantages of AP3 over AP2 for any serious photographer are well worth the minimal upgrade cost. The RAW updates last for the life cycle of the product they're aimed at. When a new version comes out support usually follows. This isn't necessarily fun but pretty standard all around.

  • When is D600 RAW support likely to be added to Aperture?

The Nikon D600 launched surprisingly quickly...I have my camera already!
However, I would like to use it for an upcoming magazine shoot, however without RAW support that is impacticable (I shoot tethered with a stylist, so need to (semi) process the files on location).  Anyone any ideas on how long it is likely to be before Aperture is upgraded with the necessary algorithms to process the D600 RAW files (how long typically before new cameras are added)?
    Thanks.

    Hi daktar 2
Interesting post. I agree about View NX  but I have been using Capture NX2 . I have not noticed any problems with WB with previous RAW  images  ( with other Nikon DSLR's  prior to D600) . On the rare occasion I shoot an interior with flash  I use the correction filter on my Flash ( SB700) .
I have all the NIK software  and rate it very highly. I think you may be correct  that NIK had  access to Nikon Algorithms  but I believe that association has ceased.  At least part of the Quid Pro was that Nikon's  Capture NX2 could use the NIK Colour Efex Pro 3 filters( and still can ) , however, the current CEP 4 filters do not work with NX2 . However, I can assure you that all the current Nik Applications  work perfectly as Aperture Plug Ins
( except for snapseed which is stand alone )
I see Nik  has recently been acquired by Google  so it will be interesting to see what any future upgrades or new Applications  are like.
As noted elsewhere  Aperture has now been upgraded to RAW  for the D600 provided you have OS 10.7x or 10.8x
