Aperture won't switch to old library

I go to switch to my Aperture 1.5.6 library and it says that it needs to relaunch. But when it does so, I get a box asking if I want to create a new library which only gives me the option to create a new library or quit the program. I've tried creating a new library then quitting to make sure the library was saved, but it still asks me to create a new one when I relaunch.

If you really want to try your existing library with Aperture 3 Trial:
1 open A3
2 switch to Finder, and drag your existing Aperture Library from the ~/Pictures folder onto the A3 Dock icon
Aperture 3 will import your entire original library into the new library created when you first launched the trial - projects, folders, albums, and all. Managed files will be copied into the new library, referenced files will stay where they are on your drive. Existing Vault links will not be copied across. Importing your existing library can take quite a while, depending on its size.
The main difference to note therefore is that Aperture 3 (paid version) will upgrade your existing library in place; the Trial version will import your existing library and leave the old one intact, essentially duplicating it, in case you wish to switch back.

I have a new mac book air and somehow iPhoto was installed twice.  Also, a second library was created and it became the default library.  I attempted to switch to the original library but it won't open.  what can I do to revert to the old library?

Both iPhotos open to a default library (#2) which has 300+ photos,  I attempted to "switch to library" under the file tab in iPhoto and tried to choose "other library" which had most of my photos.  When I attempt to open it, it doesn't do anything.  I can see it and there are 2 libraries but it won't open.
Have you tried to open your old iPhoto library by double-clicking it directly, instead of using the File menu?  That should work, if you are running iPhoto '11 and the library has been created by that version or an older version.  DO you get an error message, if you select the library directly in the Finder?
I checked and it is the latest version of iPhoto.
Is it iPhoto '11, version 6.0.5? "Latest version" is ambiguous, because it will depend on your system version.
Where is your iPhoto Library stored?

  • Can't switch to old 3.2.2 Aperture library (using 3.5.1)

    Hello there,
I use Aperture 3.2.2 (with a 100GB Library on an external drive) and I've just bought a new MacBook Pro which is running the latest version of Aperture (3.5.1). When I go to 'file > Switch to library > Other/new' and click the 'Other library' button then select my 100GB 3.2.2 Library, which is on my external drive, Aperture tells me:
"The selected library is from an older version of Aperture and requires a relaunch to switch. Choose “Relaunch” to relaunch Aperture with the new library."
However, once I click 'Relaunch' it doesn't load my old library but instead displays the default Library (which is empty for me as it's a fresh install).
Can anyone help me access my 3.2.2 from within Aperture 3.5.1 (I'm running OS X 10.9.5)? Any ideas ideas will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

Yes, the message is misleading (actually it  is down right poor) but you need to update the library before you can do anything with it in the new version of Aperture.
So to update it, first quit Aperture , then locate the old library in the Finder and double click the library. This will open Aperture on the library and as it needs to be updated you will be asked if that is what you want to do.
Once it is updated you can then use the library as you wish.
Note while the upgrade procedure is safe it is always a good idea to have a backup of it before starting.
    regards

  • I do not have Aperture installed on my computer anymore but I do have my old library.  Is there any way to extract the ORIGINAL image from the library without having Aperture installed?

I started using Aperture back when it first came out.  I really had no idea what I was doing when I set everything up.  I got a new computer but do not have my Aperture disc anymore but I do have my old library.  I can get into the library and find the pictures in the Preview and Thumbnails folders, but these obviously are not the original pictures.  The ones in the Preview folder are only 10% of the size of the original digial photo.  I want to know if there is any way to get or reconstruct the original picture using the files in the library without installing Aperture.

    Hi Refringgers,
Install the 30 day trial of Aperture. Open your Aperture Library, export the Masters and Versions.
Other than that I will make a strong recommendation not to muck within the Aperture library. Yes, you can find your photos in there, but if you ever decide to again use it may well be unable to be opened. The other thing is the photos are scattered around in a gazillion folders it would take a long time, of course depending on the number of photos, to retrieve them.
    Cordially,
    RicD

  • I'm new to this! My old mac 0sx 10.2.8 won't switch on. Not sure where to start to fix it? I am totally useless when it comes to computing, can anyone help me please!!

Hi, I am new to this support site so forgive me if I am doing it wrong but I have a problem that I am at a loss as what to do. My (very) old mac 10.2.8 won't switch on..I really only use it for music , there is a vast amount of music stored in it and am heartbroken that it won't even switch on. I have no idea where to start on trying to fix it. Can somebody please help me on where to start on fixing it

You might want to try resetting its power management unit; see the following tech notes:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1895
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
The reason I'm suggesting this is that some startup settings are stored and preserved by a tiny battery that lasts about 5 years, inside the computer. When that battery dies, the computer may forget things like what time it is and which disk to start up from. If your Mac is around 5 years old or more, that little battery might be on its way out.
If you can't revive the Mac, don't panic. You can remove its internal hard drive and put it inside a USB/FireWire enclosure so that it can be hooked up to another Mac, and then you can use or copy all of the files and music off of it (assuming the startup problem has nothing to do with the hard drive).

HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO RETRIEVE MY OLD LIBRARY OF PHOTOS, ALBUMS AND PROJECTS SINCE DOWNLOADING AN APERTURE 3 SOFTWARE UPDATE TWO DAYS AGO.  THE NEW LIBRARY ONLY HAS A FEW NEW PHOTOS IN ONE FOLDER
PLEASE ADVISE AS HOW TO RETRIEVE OLD APERTURE LIBRARY WITH ALL MY PHOTOS, ALBUMS AND PROJECTS

Find the old Aperture library in the Finder and double click it to launch Aperture with that library set to the default.
And check your caps look key.  It appears to be stuck.

  • Aperture 3 import of old library

After spending 3 hours on the import of the Aperture 2 library (you can't convert in the trial, and there was no upgrade download option online so I ordered the disc) I discovered that it had not imported any folders within projects. Is this normal? I have hundreds of them and 20,000+ pictures.
    Any ideas?

You can order a serial number immediately by clicking the BUY button when you run the trial software. That will perform a proper conversion of the old library once you upgrade aperture to the full version.
You should be able to cancel your online order of the disc and get your serial number immediately if you wish to do so.

  • If I switch iPhoto libraries, will my iPad still keep the photos from the old library?

I have two iPhoto libraries.  If I switch libraries will my iPad still keep the photos from the old library?

No. All photos must be included in every sync - each time that you sync. If you copy the photos from the one library into the other library - and then select the new photos along with the current photos to sync - then they will all sync to the iPad.
if you simply choose the new library to sync, it will replace the photos currently on the iPad.

  • Has anyone had their iphone 4 die on them? Mine is just 2 yrs old and won't switch on, tried all the remedies, reboot, tried to connect and reboot via itunes, new battery--nothing works

Hias anyone had their iphone 4 completely die on them? Mine won't switch on, I have tried using the power key with the home key, tried connecting it via usb cable to itunes, tried new battery- nothing has worked. The phone is just 2 yrs old this month, and I haven't dropped it or anything. I have never had a phone break on me before in almost 20 yrs of having mobile phones- I've had to resort to using a 7 yr old Nokia, which I used to love but it's not the same as my iphone!!

If you have attempted the reset, which is holding the home button and sleep/wake button, was it still connected to the computer? Have you tried to do that when not connected. You stated it never came on, how long did you hold the buttons together? If you cannot get it to connect to iTunes then you would not be able to restore the device. You can see if you can put the device into Recovery Mode by following the instructions in this support document. If that does not work, then you are correct, make an appointment at the Apple Store. If you can't update or restore your iOS device

  • New MBP w/lion; upgraded to iLife11 but iPhoto won't open old library?

I bought a new macbook pro in september. After completing a vacation iMovie, I noticed the new MBP didn't have iDVD on it to burn to send discs to family. I purchased iLife11 for this program but it also updated iPhoto. Pretty cool until I tried to open iPhoto11 and it won't open the old version's library... why? More importantly, how do I get around it? I have a Time Capsule so a backup or two exist if necessary... just want to get this project done without killing the hole weekend! Thanks!

As usual... found the answer after I posted this. I updated the upgrade when I installed iLife11 yesterday. It worked but I still had the problem. I thought I would try it again today to see if there were any additional updates... and KAPOW... there was, and problem FIXED! Thanks!

  • Aperture won't upgrade library

Hi, I split my library into a set of libraries based on year.  I have in total around 70,000 photos in 14 libraries.  Its been about a year that I have maintained this format. The last upgrade to Aperture seems to have messed up my libraries.
At this point, I am trying to create one Aperture library with all the photos.
I created a new library and started importing each existing one into it.  However, I am getting an error “The library could not be imported because it is from an out of date version of Aperture 3. Please upgrade…”.  If I open Aperture and try switching to one of these libraries that I cannot open from within Aperture, I get the message, “The selected library is from an older version of Aperture and requires a relaunch to switch”.  When I switch it does not offer to upgrade.
I reinstalled iPhoto and tried switching to one of my libraries and received the message that the library needs to be upgraded first in Aperture.  This upgrade does not occur as I have detailed in this message.
I’ve read Apple’s support pages, I have search the internet and this forum.  Nothing I have done has solved my issue. I’ve rebuilt, repaired the libraries and repaired permissions for example.  The last recourse I have is to relocate my originals.  I’m using that has a last resort. I’m afraid I will lose my versions and other settings in the process.
Any ideas on how to fix this import error?
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
I had a similar issue as you a while back and it was a permissions issue.  Apple does not recommend placing Aperture libraries on a NAS.  I back mine up to a NAS but I do not use the library from the NAS. Using a Sparse Image format, you can create a virtual HFS+ drive on the NAS and mount that.  Then you can use your Aperture library that way.  I use Sparse Images to backup my data to the NAS. Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner and other tools can create these drives for you. You might find backups and file access will be faster using a disk image vs  using the NAS directly as well.
My external drive which contains the Aperture libraries, is connected via Thunderbolt connection, not a NAS per se...
For external drives, I found going to the Info section for the external drive (right click on drive icon) and near the bottom is a checkbox which states "Ignore Ownership on this Volume"   Check that box and it should resolve the issue like I was experiencing.
I corrected mine by going to each Aperture library and selecting 'Me' as owner.
One note, when I checked off the "Ignore ownership..." checkbox, now my NAS is syncing the external drive folder 'Pictures' with the NAS.  I have a Synology NAS and setup a shared folder in the cloud between the external drive and my NAS.  This way my backup on the NAS is in sync with the Pictures folder on my external drive.  Prior to this, I used Carbon Copy Cloner on a schedule for backing up my Pictures folder. I still use Carbon Copy Cloner as its a great tool but for this particular case, I chose the Synology cloud.
So, to summarize, I repaired/rebuilt my libraries, repaired disk permissions, modified the ownership flag...
Another source I used for correcting my issues was at the Photosexpert website.  Its a great source. https://thephotosexpert.com/forum

Nokia Lumina 720 - 1 Week Old.  Won't switch on.  Battery is fully charged.
Was very impressed with the phone until now - am considering returning it and getting something else.
Grateful for any advice as to how to start it.  Or am I wasting my time?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you are sure the battery had sufficient charge then try this..Press Power + Volume(down) keys  until the phone vibrates (about 8-10 seconds).
If needed leave the phone on charging for about 30 minutes and see if it comes to life on its own. If not try the reset mentioned above again ..

  • Hello, I'm trying to transfer my old itunes library to a new computer using home sharing. It's switched on in both computers, but I can't see the old library in the new computer. But I can see tracks from the new computer on the old one. Please help.

Apologies for poor syntax, my arm's a little sore. Yes, one computer (old) is vista, new is Windows 8. Shouldn't I be able to import the whole library using home sharing? Am I doing something wrong? Thank you in advance

I am having the same issue.  I recently purchased a new laptop and I have spent the last 3 days using the home share to slowly transfer all 22,000 songs.  However yesterday morning when I turned on both computers to continue the process I am having the following issue:
both computers are running the same windows OS (8)
both computers are running the same version of itunes
both computers are logged in with the same apple ID
both computers have home sharing turned on
Now however I can see the NEW computers itunes library in the drop down box on the OLD computer, however I can not see the OLD computers itunes library on the NEW computer.  I can no longer see "HOME SHARES" on the drop down LIBRARY list on the new computer.  I've taken the following steps to correct the error:
    reset the router
completely shut down BOTH computers and brought them back up
    reopened itunes
    re-logged in on both PC's
re-activated both PC's with home share
The articles and help from the apple sites are worthless and it says if you can't see a library just turn home sharing off then back on - I've completed the above steps NUMEROUS times.  After spending 4 days on transferring my music I really do not want to have to start over by using an external hard drive and then importing that way.  I would like some help on discovering why the new laptop is no longer seeing my old library. (When it has been working up to this point)
    Thanks in advance.
