Apex 3.1. Interactive Report. Questions and Problems.

Hello!
First of all I'd like to say Interactive Report is a really really brilliant feature, it covers exactly that points which we were missing in previous releases of Apex. Only this single feature makes Apex 3.1 release most significant for us since may be HTML DB 1.6. So much much thanks!
So I have some questions about Interactive Report (IR):
1) About "Save Report" feature. It is possible there to save own version of report layout or overwright the default settings. There is also possibility to completelly disable this function. So the question is it possible to disable only the ability to overwright the default report but give the ability to save own reports. It would be reasonable since too smart or too dum users can break the default layout of report and break the work for other users which don't use this function at all. At the same time the possibility to save own reports
is absolutelly perfect
2) Search. I'm from Germany and we have some national non-english symbols. The IR can't perform seach correctly if we use words with such symbols. Example word "Bestätigt" is interpreted by IR as "Bestätigt". At the same time the words are correctly displayed in reports and in interface. We have correct NLS_LANG, we have imported the lang_de.sql , and our own self-made search on simple reports works ok. What's to do?
3) Charts in IR. Is there some data volume limits for Chart in IR ? sometimes we get the message "Loading XML...100%" during chart rendering and then happens nothing. In log file of Apache there is no any error messages...
Thanks in advance,
Alex

Hi Alex,
Glad to hear you're putting interactive reports to use, we put in a lot of time trying to get them right (at least for their first release).
1) The "Save As Default Report Settings" option is only available for Developers, so you can only see it if you already see the developer toolbar at the bottom of the page. Standard end-users can't see this, so they can't save over your default report settings.
2) That's right, the character set of the DAD needs to be AL32UTF8.
3) A maximum of 1000 chart points will be returned, but you should not get this error. Can you describe the columns you are charting and the chart settings?

Is there a way on this forum to find my previous questions and problem reports? Since posting a question earlier today, I've found MOST of the answer and would therefore like to append what I found to the question, without waiting for someone else to answer it. I don't remember the title I gave the earlier question, or I'd use that title in searching for it.

• Custom pagination for APEX 4.2 interactive report using Page Zero

Hi,
I want to implement an «Custom pagination for APEX 4.2 interactive report» using a «page zero».
I recently migrate from Apex 3.1 to Apex 4.2 and my «Custom pagination for APEX 3.1 interactive report» using a «page zero» is not working any more.
So now I try to adapt an excellent example of Jari Laine for 4.0 but using a page zero.
I put the code JavaScript to Page zero but I must create an dynamic action to fire only for an interactive report region.
It’s a good idea?
Thank you

Thought I would try once more with my DatePicker question.
On the Apex.Oracle.Com website I have created a 1 page application that has an Interactive Report.
[url http://apex.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=15655:1]
user = 'test'
password = 'test'
I have 2 questions :
(1) In IE7, press 'Actions', 'Filter'. On the Column dropdown list, select 'Order Timestamp'.
Notice the prompt icon to the right of the 'expression'. This should change to the Datepicker, but in IE7 it does not. Try the samething in Firefox or Chrome and the Datepicker will appear.
Is this a BUG, or does Apex 4.02 not support IE7 ?
(2) In Firefox or Chrome, where you can now see the Datepicker, you will notice that it is the new style picker, not the old style ( called 'classic' ). I want to change it so that it shows the 'classic' datepicker not the new, but cannot see how to do it, if indeed you actually can.
I would really appreciate it if someone could take a look and let me know if I am going mad, or if we need to get all our users onto IE8. We have now gone live with Apex 4.02 and need to resolve these issues.
Thanks in advance.

• What is Maximum No. of columns in APEX 3.2 Interactive Report

Hi All,
Is there any limitation on maximum number of columns in a APEX (3.2) Interactive Report page, I have a report containing more than 200 columns. I am tyring to add another 25 new columns and found this error msg: ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small.
I can add 5-6 new columns and it's runing okay but after that the msg. is coming.

A query 225 columns wide? Is that not a bit excessive? I can't imagine that being particularly user-friendly. Perhaps it might be worth considering some sort of master->detail type report with the relevant filters for content - that should give your users something a mite bit more manageable.

Environment: Oracle APEX 4.0 - Interactive Report - Table Column header Filter Issue
We have developed an interactive report using Oracle APEX 4.0, which contains a record count of around 3,000 Rows. All the rows values are unique in nature. When we try to filter the same with the help of column header filter option available in the interactive report,We get only 1000 records.

Krish,
Interactive report has hard coded limit to display 1000 rows of column filter LOV for performance. Unfortunately, the limit cannot be changed. The workaround is to define a Column Filter LOV for the column instead of using "Default Based on Column Type".

• Apex 4.0 interactive reports and images

To the community,
I haven't had a chance to do a decent search before bed, but I was wondering if anyone had links to good examples on OTN, someone's blog, apex.oracle.com etc, but I thought I'd put the question out there overnight.
I have a table that contains my blob/mimetype/filename information, and I'd like to create a sample interactive report that displays the image in the blob in all three formats - standard interactive report, using the icon view, and using the detail view.
Note I'm not referring to images that may be in the repository or file system - but within in a table.
For whatever reasons I was losing the battle this afternoon, I was just wondering if anyone knew of good concise examples, such as this for using images in form & classic report pages.
http://www.oracle.com/webfolder/technetwork/tutorials/obe/db/apex/r31/apex31nf/apex31blob.htm
Cheers,
Scott

I have finally replicated the solution, with the help of the following thread
Confusion with get_blob_file_src
found when searching "broken image" as one of the keywords.
Such a horrible and non-intuitive solution to get images displayed in an interactive report!
Hopefully the Apex team can work on improving this in future releases...

• Interactive Report question-New to Apex

Hi, I am new to Apex..I request your help in solving a prob..
I am trying to create an interactive report(IR) which has more than 160 columns..It says the max limit is 60(or 64) columns..I remember when I was just starting to build the app it did allow me to create the report with 160+ columns but I didnt want to start with IR..My entire application has been built and this is the only thing that has to be done..Is there anyway to create an IR with 160+ columns now that I am almost finishing up the app..
(just a thot-may be create another app with the IR and then import that page-if you think that will work plz guide me on how to do it)
Regards,
R

Hi R,
I had the same thought; if it's possible to create a new appl with IR with 160+ columns then do so.
After creating a new appl go back to the original appl, open one of the pages, click the copy button on top of the page, click 'Page in another application', select the new appl with the IR, then select the page with IR ...... follow the steps
Kind regards

• Filtering interactive report question

hi all,
i created an interactive report that uses a query like this..
SELECT i.issue_id "ID",
i.title "TITLE",
i.module "MODULE",
u1.last_name || ', ' || u1.first_name || ' ' || SUBSTR(u1.middle_name,   1,   1) || '.' "OWNER",
u2.last_name || ', ' || u2.first_name || ' ' || SUBSTR(u2.middle_name,   1,   1) || '.' "REPORTED BY",
i.report_date "DATE REPORTED",
u3.last_name || ', ' || u3.first_name || ' ' || SUBSTR(u3.middle_name,   1,   1) || '.' "SUBMITTER"
FROM issues i,
users u1,
users u2,
users u3
WHERE 1 = 1
AND i.owner = u1.user_id
AND i.reported_by = u2.user_id
AND i.submitter = u3.user_idi created an application item called APP_USERID and added a process on the 101 page to select the userid into :APP_USERID from users_table where username = :app_user.
i want to create a default filter based on the current user's user_id. if i change my query like this
WHERE 1 = 1
AND i.owner = u1.user_id
AND i.reported_by = u2.user_id
AND i.submitter = u3.user_id
AND i.owner = :APP_USERIDit works fine but if i wanted to view all records not just owned by the current user, i will have a problem.
can anyone suggest an approach on how i can solve this.
thanks.
regards,
allen

Hi Allen,
I tried some different things in the Interactive reports (make a default with :ITEM or &ITEM.), but they didn't work.
The only why I can think of now how to get it work is by adding in your query a DECODE or NVL
WHERE 1 = 1
AND i.owner = u1.user_id
AND i.reported_by = u2.user_id
AND i.submitter = u3.user_id
AND i.owner = NVL(:APP_USERID,i.owner)
Basically what it does, if the value of :APP_USERID is set it will use that, if that value is null it will return all records. So you would have a process or computation that sets the item APP_USERID to null when you hit something to get all records.

• Interactive Report questions

Good Afternoon,
I converted a sql classic report to an interactive report. The classic report has parameters, that once selected fires a page process that inserts data into a table, which creates column headings for my report. The parameters still work in the interactive report, but I want the interactive report to handle the parameters instead.
Problems I can't figure out how to mimic this in the interactive report: example: the classic report could have up to 50 columns and change when a user selects a unit and displays that unit's report date as a column heading once the user hits the run report button. I wan the user to be able to do that using the IR filters, but I cannot find the actions menu items name to change the page process to fire when the user presses apply.
The parameters the user currently selects are Unit and enter a From and To Date. This is what I need to mimic in the IR. I am using a union query for this report. Is this even possible.
I am using apex 4.1, theme is Underlined from 3.2 and Oracle 11g.
Thanks,
Mary

Mary,
Not sure that I understood all of that but, I think, overall, you just want to be able to be able to submit the page (and thus fire your On Submit Page process) when the user clicks Apply? Is this right?
If so, you don't actually have to fire anything from the click of the Apply button. It turns out that, whenever the Apply button is clicked, the Refresh event is fired for your Interactive Report (IRR). However, what's different is that the IRR refresh is implemented with a "Partial Page Refresh" whereas your Classic Report was implemented using a Page submission, i.e. refreshing just one section versus refreshing the whole page.
So, all that is necessary is to do something "After Refresh" of the region.
There are lots of ways to do this. The easiest would be to:
1. Create a Dynamic Action that is fired After Refresh of your IRR. The "Action" is going to be JavaScript. Here's the code:
apex.submit('PROPERTY_SET'); 2. This causes the page to be submitted whenever the IRR is refreshed. By submitting the page, you will get your whole page refresh that you had before.
All of this said, I would use AJAX and do all of this without submitting the page but, that is a longer post. This should work for you as a quick solution.

• Interactive Report Refresh and JQuery Plugin Issue

Hi,
I have Interactive report in my page. I am using jQuery context menu plugin , so when user right click on a column he get an option to add , delete , update and other option.
javascript pseude code for context menu
$(function(){
context_menu();
function context_menu(){
$('.Col1').contextMenu();
}Suppose User Selects Delete option. In this case jQuery popup appears and users enter the data which is saved to table using on demand process. After that using gReport.search('SEARCH') , I am refreshing the page...
Now the issue arises ------ Now when i right click the column my jQuery context menu is not working ...
Workaround used ----- I added onmouseover=context_menu() function to the column link... and it working fine..
Now my question is ... each time the user moves the mouse over column it will run context_menu() function ..... Will there be any adverse issue .. or memory leakage issue...
Please advice..
Thanks,
shijesh

Hi,
I think there should not be any issues to do that way. You need of course test it carefully.
You can run stuff after IR refresh also on Apex 3.2.
See e.g. this post
Apex 3.2 hook javascripts to IR and execute those when report is refreshed
I have included that to my jQuery "plugin" for Apex 3.2

• Interactive Report Pagination and count

Hello,
I have two situations I am hoping someone could help me with.
Problem 1
I am using interactive reports in APEX 3.2.1 and I have reports with rows >= 6000. currently pagination on reports is set to:
X to Y of Z
such that when the report is rendered it looks something like 1 - 15 of 6203 >.
Is it possible to add 'objects' or 'buttons' that allow me to navigate directly to the last row or/first row e.g
|<< < 1 - 15 of 6203 > >>|
such that |<< or >>| navigates to the very end row while < or > navigates to the next set or rows? would this be javascript? if so, does anyone have code for it? unfortunately not only am I new to APEX, I am a novice at javascript as well.
Problem 2
Is it possible to have APEX interactive reports return a distinct count on fields that are not unique? All counts are equating to the count of the unique ID and has had me pulling my hair
Any help is most welcome,
Mufudzi

Hi Mike,
I have not managed to get 'Distinct count' to work. Unfortunately, the project I am working on for this neither has the time or budget to investigate further but hopefully I will be able to get a solution from someone as a "nice-to-know".
Regarding the first problem I posted on, managed to come up with a solution using some html. Basically I created two html scripts (one above the report and the other below the pagination buttons at the bottom of the report)
- for the top of report html I used the following code:
+
<>a href="#endofpage"<>End of Page
+
+
Top of Page
+
and called the script topofpage
- for the bottom of report html script I called it endofpage and used the following code:
+
<>a href="#topofpage"<>Top of Page
+
+
End of Page
+
What the script does is when the "End of Page" hyperlink is clicked, it takes the user to the bottom of the screen/page and vice versa for the "Top of Page" hyperlink situated at the bottom of the page. Users will be educated on how to use the ROWS utility on the interactive report menu bar so that they can display all available rows on one page and use the links to navigate from top to bottom of page.

• Interactive Report Download and Session State Protection

I have created an Interactive Report in an APEX application that I have enabled
session state protection for. The issue I am having is with the "Download"
functionality of the interactive report to a .csv file.
The URL created by selecting Download from the drop down (javascript:gReport.controls.download();)
is built or constructed without a checksum thus causing the error below.
Error
No checksum was provided to show processing for a page that
requires a checksum when one or more request, clear cache, or argument
values are passed as parameters.
The anchor tag containing the URL (/f?p=app_id:page:session_id:CSV:) is contained within
<div id="apexir_CONTROL_PANEL_DROP" class="drop_panel
clearfix" style="">
Running the following: Application Express 3.1.0.00.32 on Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0
Is there a way to add a checksum to this? OR does anyone have any ideas on how to work around this?
Edited by: Bryce Tuohy on Feb 26, 2009 10:08 AM

WORKAROUND:
1.) Create hidden ITEM on page (I named it P23_PREPARED_CSV_DOWNLOAD_URL).
Enter the following for the ITEM
as the SOURCE_TYPE : PL/SQL Function Body
as the SOURCE: return apex_util.prepare_url('f?p=&APP_ID.:&APP_PAGE_ID.:&APP_SESSION.:CSV:')
2.) Create BUTTON that executes javascript to open POPUP window with this url.
a.) Create Button and enter
<a href="javascript:popupURL('&P23_PREPARED_CSV_DOWNLOAD_URL.')">Download and Save to CSV file</a>as the "Text Label/Alt"
Originally had custom code for javascript POPUP and this is not needed .... just use the APEX javascript function.

• Clearing Interactive Report, custom authentication problem

I have written my own custom authentication for my apex app. It calls a custom function in the db that looks in a table for user/password. It works fine. Login works and when I save sort order for standard reports, they are saved between sessions.
However, for my interactive report the sort orders on my Interactive reports are being reset each time the user gets a new session id.
I'm not sure why this is happening. Any suggestions or ideas on why this happens when I don't use 'user cookies' (standard apex login)?
