APEX Listener on Weblogic licensing - SE or EE

Does the APEX listener on Weblogic use any Weblogic Enterprise Edition features like clustering or is Weblogic Standard Edition good enough? I'm assuming you would need to license Welogic for the APEX listener right?
Also do we have any sizing guidelines for APEX listener on Weblogic. The real question is if the APEX application we have met our SLA's on a 1 CPU box, without the APEX listener, after migrating to Weblogic - APEX Listener, would we be needing more, less or the same CPU capacity.

Hello,
the APEX Listener itself is stateless, so you can cluster it easily if you want or have to.
APEX Listener is licensed with APEX, not with WLS. You can use a variety of J2EE containers that meet the requirements. In addition to WLS, Oracle supports the use of OC4J (either part of OAS or standalone) and GlassFish. In fact, the APEX Listener ships with an embedded version of GlassFish.
Despite the support aspect, there are people who successfully run the Listener on the GlassFish's Open Source Edition or Apache Tomcat.
Concerning your SLAs: The Listener will do something for you, so of course it will need the CPU. How much load it will generate depends on your usage scenario. Your post sounds like you already use APEX with a different web server than the Listener. If that guess is right, it would be helpful to know which web server you use now and how much CPU time it consumes.

  • Apex listener / Weblogic server currently unavailable

    I installed the latest apex listener with weblogic server. Worked fine til I rebooted. The weblogic server is running and the weblogic console shows that apex is running, but when I go the URL I get "Requested url http://haora01:7001/apex/apex_admin is currently unavailable". Same URL worked fine before the reboot. I was using the EPG gateway and wanted to try the apex listener instead. I can't find any logs that help. Anybody have any suggestions?

    The 'config' file might have gone missing - the installation/configuration process (for Tomcat, at least) has a habit of storing the configuration xml file in 'tmp'... which then goes once you reboot! There are some posts on how to change the directory in which the configuration file is stored.

  • Report Printing: APEX 4.01 - APEX Listener - WebLogic 10.3.3

    We have some report printing issues...
    Our configuration is APEX 4.01 using the APEX Listener with WebLogic 10.3.3.
    The first issue is that under "Print Attributes" the following is listed in red under "Printing":
    "Report printing is currently not available, there is no print server configured."
    The second one is that we need to print pdf format and I have not found a solution for doing this with the APEX Listener and WebLogic. I saw that the FOP solution for the APEX Listener didn't make it into the current release... Is there any way to do pdf type reports with the current APEX listener technology?
    The third issue is that in the demo app when running a report there is a "Error loading file:" type error with "FLOW_FLASH_CHART" and apex_util.flash as part of the url.
    Any help would be appreciated...
    Thanks!

    I deployed in WebLogic the fop.war that came with APEX 4.0.1 and it got rid of the error message, but when I tried to download a report as pdf, I got an error saying it was corrupted or invalid. I downloaded the file it produced and opened it in a text editor. It was a small html type file with the following URL:
    ORA-20001: The printing engine could not be reached because either the URL specified is incorrect or a proxy URL needs to be specified.

  • Apex Listener commercial license

    Hello,
    I created applications with Apex and I'm about to install Apex on an other database.
    I 'll maybe choose Apex Listener but I don't know if there is a commercial license for it: would my customers have to pay to use an apex application that runs with Apex Listener ??
    Thanks.
    Fanny

    If you use the ORACLE HTTP server (Apache with modplsql), it's free with the database license.
    If you use the APEX Listener, you need an App Server. The App Server requires a License.
    For APEX, it's licensed with the Database for all version , Standard One, Standard, Enterprise, Express.

  • Can a single Weblogic server host more than one Apex Listener?

    Hi All:
    Is it possible to deploy more than one APEX listener on a Weblogic server to service multiple APEX installations on different Database hosts?
    I suspect it is just a matter of port configuration and deployment naming but has anyone experience with this?
    Regards,
    David

    Hi David,
    it is possible to have multiple instances of the APEX Listener deployed on the same JEE container. I didn't actually do this with WLS, but I don't know any reason why this should be different on WLS than it would be on other JEE containers.
    You should start by preparing the apex.war to have the parameter config.dir set in the web.xml . We chose to let it point to a base directory for all config files having one subdirectory for each deployed instance, so we have to do this only once with every new release that comes in. By the way, this is the first location of the sequence to be checked by the APEX Listener upon startup.
    Then you can deploy this war file multiple times giving each instance a different application name/context root. We chose +<apex_dbname>+ as pattern for this, but that's up to you.
    Note that you may have to provide the static files ("images") for APEX multiple times as well if you don't have the same APEX version on each instance or if you use different custom files that shall not be the present on each instance or in different versions for at least some instances.
    In that case, you'll have to configure your WLS to provide multiple "images-applications" as well. We chose to have one for each instance and use +</i_<dbname>/+ as pattern here. If you used the default image prefix +/i/+ so far, you can reset it using the corresponding script provided in the APEX installation package. I'd recommend to use the script version of the package that corresponds to the APEX version of the instance you want to configure.
    That might sound complicated, but actually it's not. It's just a few things to keep in mind before starting and once you've set it up, it's really easy to handle.

  • APEX Listener with Free environment

    Hi,
    I was going through APEX Listener Installation guide and found that the supported installations are
    *1) with WebLogic*
    *2) Glassfish &*
    *3) OC4J*
    All of the above are associated with licensing cost. Is there any free installation scenario? As 11gXE is free to store upto 11GB of user data, I was thinking to install it with Glassfish for my small application which is not expected to have 11GB of user data over the next 4-5 years. Today I had a chat with one of the local Oracle Sales guy and I found that licensing cost is huge for Glassfish.
    I don't know whether standalone APEX Listener will serve the purpose of having my application available over the internet. Please forgive me; I am a novice in the field of networking.
    Could you please provide me the details of the free or low cost alternatives of the above scenarios? One option I know is to go for hosting services for low cost. But to me that is also huge.
    Any kind of help is appreciated.

    Supported in this context is supported by Oracle in that you can open an SR with support.oracle.com or not.
    ApexListener runs on most J2EE Containers. Free ones include GlassFish Community Server and Tomcat. ApexListener runs on GF as well as Tomcat, but you cannot run to Oracle Support if you have an issue. You have to seek help here, on this forum, if you cannot resolve things yourself :(

  • APEX Listener for Extranet

    Hi,
    We've been using Oracle HTTP Server (Apache) for my APEX connections. We're new to APEX Listener and have no knowledge about it.
    1. First of all, is Oracle GlassFish Server free? Does it require license cost per CPU like Oracle Weblogic does?
    2. We currently have an extranet box that runs Oracle HTTP (actually Oracle HTTP inside Oracle AS 9i). If we need to use APEX Listener, should we install the J2EE Container (Oracle GlassFish) with APEX Listener inside our "Intranet" and only the Oracle HTTP Server in our extranet server? I'm confused about the appropriate method for "extranet" environment.
    Thanks.
    Andy

    Hi Andy,
    1. First of all, is Oracle GlassFish Server free? Does it require license cost per CPU like Oracle Weblogic does?As Prabodh already mentioned, there exist two different editions of GlassFish by now: The officially supported Oracle GlassFish Server (with license costs) and GlassFish Server Open Source Edition (free). While you can run APEX Listener on both of these JEE Containers, you will not get any support through MOS when using the latter one.
I'm confused about the appropriate method for "extranet" environment.I'm not sure if this has become clear yet: You don't actually need OHS for APEX if you start using APEX Listener. You can deploy APEX Listener to a GlassFish on your extranet server. It'll connect to the database listener of your APEX instance using JDBC like OHS/mod_plsql did before.
    Of course, you could think about adding a security layer to your database by hiding it's listening endpoint from your extranet. To do that, you could deploy APEX Listener in your internal network and let OHS (or a "plain" Apache HTTPD) on your extranet box act as a proxy. That way, you'll have only HTTP or AJP traffic through your firewall (or whatever is in between your internal network and your extranet), but you could close your database port. In that case, it also could be a good idea to let the proxy serve the static contents for APEX ("images") on your extranet box for less traffic on the link between internal network and extranet and especially for better response times towards extranet clients. Of course, if you have internal users for that instance as well, you'll want to deploy the images to the GlassFish as well...

  • APEX Listener versus classic Application Server

    Currently we use the APEX Listener with the stand-alone configuration to access the URL af an APEX application.
    This might not be a suitable situation for a production environment.
    In a short, here are the (possible) requirements:
    - Sessions must be able to access at the same time the same APEX application and page.
    Let's say 500 users should be able to access it with no trouble.
    - If there are some pages accessed very frequently, they should be cached (how?) without having to request them all the time from the database.
    - If more than 500 users are accessing the application, to avoid latency, there should be a "mechanism" to make them "waiting" until the allowed amount of concurrent sessions is below 500, and without impacting (or with low impact) of other working sessions.
    I have little knowledge of middle ware environment, but this seems to me specifications for an application server and or a web server.
    Hera are my questions:
    1) Is it possible to implement such above mechanism with the APEX Listener?
    2) If not possible, what should I consider?
    Thanks by advance for sharing your experience.
    Kind Regards.

    Essentially you are asking how do I tune the number of database connections and also how do I tune the number of HTTP request handling threads.
    The former is controlled via the Listener configuration files, specifying the size of the connection pool etc, if you look at the configuration file or use the SQL Developer Listener admin tool the settings are pretty self explanatory, the latter is controlled by the application server, see below for WebLogic documentation on this:

  • Apex Listener authentication.

    I want to use Apex Listener for my pl/sql web application (now I use mod_plsql).
    How can I implement authentication in order to protect pages from unauthorized use (like OWA_CUSTOM does in nod_plsql)?
    Tks
    Tullio

    Hi Udo and Tullio,
    I am testing the listener against APEX 4.1. I would like to integrate the APEX applications in our SSO system. We are using SAML2, so I have configured a Weblogic Server for working as a Service Provider. In this server I have deployed the apex.war and I have registered the /apex/* pattern in my Identity Provider (Active Directory Federation Services). In this way, when I make a request of any of my APEX applications (apex/f?p=123:...), if I have not a valid session I am redirected to the Identity Provider Login page. This is working fine, more or less, I have to do more testing...
    My question is, do you think that is this the best approach for securing the APEX applications? In order to everything works ok, I have to declare a security constraint in the web.xml...
    <security-constraint>
         <web-resource-collection>
              <web-resource-name>APEX Application Calls</web-resource-name>
              <url-pattern>/*</url-pattern>
              <http-method>GET</http-method>
              <http-method>POST</http-method>
         </web-resource-collection>
         <auth-constraint>
              <role-name>FederatedUsers</role-name>
         </auth-constraint>
    </security-constraint>
    ...and in the weblogic.xml I just map the FederatedUsers against a principal:
    <security-role-assignment>
         <role-name>FederatedUsers</role-name>
         <principal-name>users</principal-name>
    </security-role-assignment>
    Also I have declared a filter for injecting some info in the headers request (needed for the APEX applications), but this is another story...
    Thanks in advance,
    Luis

  • Apex listener images deployement

    Hi
    I installed the APEX listener recently. I have a question. Can I deploy the images in a different way other than jar them and then deploy to WLS. I have a lot of custom images/javascripts reside under the /i/ virtual path (e.g. /i/extjs). The images and javascripts change frequently. I guess that every time this happens I have to create a new i.war and redeploy which is not so convenient. Is there any other way to do that (e.g. copy them directly to a directory as I was doing with OHS/modplsql)
    Thanx
    George

    Hi George,
    you could do this by locating the directory where the WLS has unpacked the deployment to. But the more I think about this, the more I think you shouldn't do that, because staging etc. makes this very complex again.
    Instead of deploying the images as war file, you could add a virutal directory mapping, which is far easier.
    It should be possible to do that in the weblogic.xml of the apex.war (unpack the war, edit the file, repack the war, similar to what you'll do if you edit the web.xml, e.g. to change to config.dir parameter). See the [url http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13222_01/wls/docs81/webapp/weblogic_xml.html#1039396]corresponding part of the WLS documentation for details on that parmaeter. The result could be a weblogic.xml as follows
    <weblogic-web-app xmlns="http://www.bea.com/ns/weblogic/weblogic-web-app">
    <container-descriptor>
      <prefer-web-inf-classes>true</prefer-web-inf-classes>
    </container-descriptor>
    <virtual-directory-mapping>
      <local-path>/opt/oracle/apex/images</local-path>
      <url-pattern>/i/*</url-pattern>
    </virtual-directory-mapping>
    </weblogic-web-app>if your images are stored in */opt/oracle/apex/images* .
    Not that this can cause node specific dependencies if you have a clustered WLS, and that you'll have to undeploy the i-application before you can redeploy the apex.war.

  • Apex listener compatibility with VMware

    We have APEX listener configured on Tomcat server. There is a plan to move the tomcat server to virtual machines (VMware based). Migration will be made using Physical to Virtual (P2V) migration tools.
    Application Express 4.0.2.00.07 is installed on Database server.
    Software installed on Tomcat server:
    •     Windows 2008
    •     TomCat v 6.0
    •     Java version "1.6.0_25"
    •     Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_25-b06)
    •     Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.0-b11, mixed mode)java
    Is the virtual platform supported by Oracle?
    What could be problems if we move to virtual machines instead of current physical machine for Tomcat?
    Is there any Oracle documentation related to this?

    Assuming the VM environment is set up correctly, it should be totally transparent whether the underlying infrastructure is virtual or physical.
    However*, two observations...
    1. TomCat is not an option for the Oracle APEX listener. Valid options are GlassFish, Weblogic or Oracle OC4J (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/apex-listener/documentation/index.html). So, I don't think that you really have the APEX Listener running under TomCat. Do you mean that you have the mod_plsql for Apache configured to connect to APEX (do you see a "pls" in the URL to your APEX Server)? If so, this isn't actually the APEX Listener. It's just a (supported) configuration of Apache.
    2. Whether it will work without an issue and whether it is actually supported are different questions. I don't think Oracle will officially support VM implemented products unless the underlying VM is Oracle's own (rather than, for example, VMWare). I think you would probably still get good, (unofficial!), answers in this forum but, Oracle might tell you to get bent if you opened a tar.

  • APEX Listener as a replacement for modplsql ?

    Will APEX Listener ever be, or is it able to be now, a replacement for modplsql driven applications that are not APEX. It seems that it already takes care of everything needed to be a full scale modplsql replacement... In all honesty looking to see if it is possible to reduce the future licensing load on some of my clients if they wanted to build more redundancy into their front-end web applications. They wouldn't be reducing what they pay, as they are still in for the Forms installs in app server, but they are inhibited on their redundancy growth outward since adding new licenses to cover these new servers would be cost prohibitive. This is mainly a third-party product (SGHE's Self-Service Banner) that is driven off of modplsql, so rewrite isn't an option.
    Thanks for your input,
    -Richard

    As of the last EA version, it depends on which modplsql features your application uses. The main modplsql features that are not yet supported are:
    Basic database authentication - The listener must be configured with a single username and password and cannot dynamically change the database connection at run time.
    Multiple DADS - Each listener is configured for one and only one database connection. However, there is a way to install multiple copies of the listener, and configure each for a different database connection.
    Dynamic parameter passing - There must be a one to one relationship between fields on an HTML form (or query string variables in the URL) and the non-defaulted parameters of the called procedure. Name and Value arrays, with the "!" before the procedure name in the URL are not supported.
    CGI environment variables in the DAD.
    Oracle MAY support some or all of these features in the production version, or in some future version. We can probably influence this by telling Oracle what we want - but no guarantees. Kris Rice tells me that the APEX Listener was written to be extendable, so once Oracle gives us some documentation of how to extend it, some enterprising programmer may add some of these features as an extension.
