Apple 30" vs. Dell 3007WFP

Has anyone compared their 30 display to the Dell 3007WFP? I just read that it says the Dell has better image quality and fast pixel response.

Dell offers a 5 (five) year warranty option. Apple 1 year. My experience of customer service from Dell is fantastic. It is simply impossible to be any better in my view: 4 hours replacement on site of any part

  • Dell 3007WFP and a Mac Mini

    Hey guys
I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but it was the only one that seemed appropriate. I'm thinking about buying a mac mini, and i want to know if it will work with my 30" Dell 3007WFP Monitor.
I know it wont work with the Apple 30" display, and ive found posts saying that the mac mini and dell are compatible, and that they arent. If anyone has a definite answer, (ie: they've done it themselves and know it works) any responses would be great.
    Thanks in advance
    Glenn

The Mac Mini has a maximum display resolution of 1920 x 1200. the 30" Dell 3007WFP Monitor is 2560 x 1600, so cannot work at full resolution with a Mac Mini. You need a computer with dual-link DVI.

  • DELL  3007WFP-HC with MacPro/ATI X1900XT?

I am considering buying Dell 3007WFP-HC as the second monitor for my Mac Pro (equipped with ATI X1900XT).
Is there any problem using this combination, especially the flickering/dancing pixel problem?

No, I've had no problems. Philip provides the core monitor components to apple and dell for these items. The OS "saw" the dells instantly, loaded a solid default profile and they look really good. You can still tweak these like any other monitor.
That is not to say that may not prefer the apple product over the dell. But, I'm really happy with the dells and independant testing by multiple labs has not reported the "flickering/dancing pixel" problem that is being reported by users.

  • Colour difference issues on wide gamut Dell 3007wfp

    Hey guys,
I was wondering if someone could help with this problem that is driving me insane. I have tried a lot of possible solutions I found online, but nothing seems to work.
The problem I've got is that when I save a JPEG in Photoshop through Save for web I get oversaturated and darker colours in web browsers on both of my monitors.
What I am trying to achieve is seeing the same colours in PS as the ones I get in web browsers. I don't really care about the colours in PS being incorrect for print, etc, as I am a web designer and the only thing that matters to me is monitor colour.
While playing around with colour settings (changing them and then doing a Save for web) I was able to achieve exactly the same colours on both monitors that did at the same time match the initial Photoshop design - stupidly I can't remember what I have changed in the existing PS file colour settings, but the colours went quite dull, then when saving for web they looked exactly how I wanted them to look on both monitors, they also did match the initial colour of the PS file. Of course switching to different colour settings each time I need to save something for web is not ideal, but I would be quite happy if someone could explain to me how to at least achieve this...
    My setup:
    Dell 3007wfp wide gamut
    Dell 2405wfp
    Windows 7 64bit
    Photoshop CS4 64bit
    Pantone Huey calibrator
    My Windows colour management settings:
My Photoshop colour settings for the file I am working on atm:
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank you

I don't really care about the colours in PS being incorrect for print,
etc, as I am a web designer and the only thing that matters to me is
    monitor colour.
photoshop prints through a Source Profile> Print Profile CONVERSION
your monitor profile has nothing to do with how Ps prints your source color
(at least in my work flow)
photoshop displays RGB color through a Source Profile> Monitor Profile CONVERSION
your print profile has nothing to do with how Ps displays your source color
after you get your monitor profile ruled out,
the next step is to verify if Ps is using the correct Source Profile, and if you are Saving your web images in sRGB, and if you are embedding the sRGB profile or not
the last step would be to nail down if your test browser reads embedded profiles (it is color managed like Ps)
and what profile the browser applies by Default (in the case it is not color managed, or the test files are untagged)
and if that Default profile is then CONVERTED to Monitor RGB or sent straight to the monitor...

  • MBP + Dell 3007WFP

    Hello,
I have MBP 17" with GF 8600M GT (256MB) video card. I just bought Dell 3007WFP monitor but I can only get 1280x800 out of it. I do have dual link cable and as far as specs say video card capable of doing 2560x1600 resolution. I wonder what is wrong ?
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks,
    M.

Are you sure your cable says "Dual-link" on the cable jacket? It sounds exactly like what would happen if a single link cable were used.

  • Dell 3007WFP 30"

I've searched, and haven't found where anyone has confirmed this works with the shipping stock Mac PRO!
My 3007WFP will be here today, and i'm confident it will work with the GF7300 card (of course, it'll be better with the X1900 or faster), but i'll post my findings when I get it hooked up!

The Mac Pro and the default Nvidia 7300GT will drive the Dell 3007WFP 30" display just fine.

  • Apple 20" vs Dell

I'm looking to purchase a new monitor to replace this very, very old monitor (understand, any model will be an upgrade). I realize Apple Cinema Displays are top notch, but for the $$$$ I don't mind crossing over and considering a Dell.
Does anyone have comments or experience on the 20" cinema display vs Dell UltraSharp 2007WFP? I found this comprehensive comparison here but it is almost 2 years old and compares the 2005FPW:
    http://www.anandtech.com/displays/showdoc.aspx?i=2400
BTW - I searched the discussion board for this and I only saw older posts, or people comparing the 30" display.

    Hey,
Just saw your post on my topic about the Dell monitor.
Well. If your hard on the budget I'd suggest you go for the Dell. There isnt much difference I feel. Here are some facts about the monitors that I know of:
    - The Dell and Apple 20" monitors mostly use the same panels. (both from LG)
    - Dell is a sort of lottery situation. If you get the LG panel, its all fine, but i have read about people getting other panels as well which arent as good.
    - Apple garuntees quality.
    - Dell monitors are best value for the buck.
    - There were some color banding issues with the Dell 20 and 24" monitors. Although they seemed to have fixed them now. Atleast with my Dell monitor I don't notice any banding at all.
    - Dell gives you a 3-year advanced exchange, although I think with apple you have to purchase apple care seperately to be eligible for 3 year warranty.
    - The dell has portrait viewing, and the stand is very adjustable, as compared to the apple.
    - The apple monitor calibrates better and more easily with other apple hardware.
My general experience with my Dell monitor is quite satisfying. The color issues I had I adjusted by fiddling around with the monitor settings and got them to look somewhat similar to my MacBook pro's screen. Although what I feel is, the Dell displays the colors more accurately than the MacBook Pro.
The Dell monitor is very very nice. No doubt about that. And the quality seems top notch. I do not regret buying it.
It just lacks the "apple" factor. if you know what I mean. (For example, why buy an Apple keyboard, if you can get a similar keyboard (or maybe better) by logitech for cheaper.)
So i'd suggest you go with the Dell, if your counting in everything including the price. There's a 95% chance you'll be very happy with it. 5% that you might be dissapointed. (i.e. if you get unlucky on the dell lottery and get a bad panel.) Although, i hear that if that is the case, Dell is very good with its service and if you are unhappy, you can send it back and they send you a new one until you're happy with it. (Or even a refund within 21 days.)
If you have the dough to spare though, go for apple. I doubt theres any chance that you'll be unhappy with the apple monitor. Especially if your hooking it up to apple hardware. It just calibrates and looks great right out of the box. Because apple quality testing and color calibration are better than Dells. Even though they might use the same panels for the 20" models.
    Hope this was helpful.

  • Problem with Dell 3007wfp

So I just got my new Dell 30" and the only problem is is that it won't go above 1280x800. If I try to do it, the image gets so distorted that I can't even switch it back to a viewable resolution. I end up having to hook my old monitor up to it to fix it. I'm running the 1900xt card on my Mac Pro. Am I missing something?

I just had a similar problem on hooking up a Dell 300&WFP to a Dual-core Intel Xeon Mac Pro with a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT video card. Both Mac and monitor were right out of the box.
On initial connection of the Dell's DVI-dual link cable to the left-hand female DVI port (facing the back of the Mac), the maximum resolution I saw was 1200 x 800, and it was very disappointingly jaggy. Interposing the DVI adapter that came with the Mac did not help.
Interestingly, switching the Dell's DVI cable to the Mac's other DVI port (right-hand, closer to the USB ports, etc), after turning the monitor off but without restarting the Mac, just led to a black screen on the monitor.
Fortunately, however, if the power button on the Mac was then pressed for just a few seconds, but not long enough to restart the Mac (Dell now hooked to the right-had DVI port directly, i.e., without adapter), computer and monitor synched. I now had a wide range of resolution options (800 x 500 to 2560 x 1600), all appropriately sharp.
    Hope this helps others.

  • 30" Dell 3007WFP Monitor to G-5

I hope there is help out there? I have a Dell 30" cinema style monitor and I plugged it into my G-5. The images look decent but the text and icons look somewhat jagged / bitmapped / pixelated / choppy (not really sure the best way to explain it). I am somewhat a novice and not sure how I adjust the resolution to fit the monitor. Right now it is at 1280 x 800. There are a limited number of resolution settings. I downloaded the shareware to change the settings, but how do you know what the setting are supposed to be for your monitor. I called Dell and they couldn't give me anything further than what is on their site. As far as I can tell that is not much. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your card doesn't have dual-link DVI. You could look for a used Mac NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL or NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL, which were optional on your model of G5, or buy a new card. The fastest is the ATI Radeon® X800 XT MAC Edition RoHS 256MB AGP
<http://shop.ati.com/product.asp?sku=3170810> with one ADC, and one dual-link DVI port.
A cheaper (and slower) board is the ATI Radeon® 9600 Pro PC & MAC Edition RoHS 256MB AGP
<http://shop.ati.com/product.asp?sku=3170809> with one single-link and one dual-link DVI port.

  • For aperture: The Cinema 30 inch or the Dell 3007WFP?

Is it true that they have the same underlying LCD screen. It's $1349 instead of $1999.

    Jan,
Just a nit, but you don't "calibrate" a monitor, you
"characterize" it by making a profile. (Apple makes
    the same error!)
You are correct above--but not totally. Monitors can be both calibrated and characterized. In recent years calibration has fallen into the background because most LCD monitors can't be calibrated.
Calibration is what happens when you make adjustments to the monitor's display characteristics.
Characterization is when you measure a monitor and describe what it does for various inputs. That description is usually an ICC profile.
The Apple Cinema displays are set at the factory to a gamma 2.2 curve and have a native white-point of about 6300K. You can't change these features on the monitor. That's why I say the Cinema display is an uncalibrated display.
What you can do--what most profiling packages do if you ask them to adjust the white-point--is to make adjustments in the video card. This is not the same as adjusting at the monitor (not possible with Apple). The problem is that our DVI connection only passes 256 shades of each color RGB to the monitor. If you start making adjustments in the video card you will have less than 256 shades of each color available. That's not good. It's not a tragedy but you will loose the ability to see some detail that might be present in your digital files.
There are only two current LCD monitors that I know which can be calibrated Eizo and some NEC models.
Don't get me wrong. The Apple cinema displays are quite good. It they weren't I would't be using the Cinema 23. However, there are better technologies available.
The word 'ghosting' may not be precise to describe the problem with the cinema 30. What I see in all of them is when I place a window in a screen position for a few seconds (10-15s) then close the window a faint image of the window and it's contents remains for about 10-15s afterwards. All LCD displays to this, some more than others. The Cinema 30 more than most.
It's not ideal for Color work. Not deadly but definitely not ideal. I traded my Cinema display to a friend who is also a photographer. He loves it. We all interact with our tools differently. It is good get a heads-up of potential problems and decide for yourself. That is why I love the forums.

  • Apple vs. Dell 30" display

Are there any reviews or users who can say which of these companies has the better 30" flat panel display?

Perhaps not quite tech-heavy enough for all the video gearheads here, but c|net posted their head-to-head test this week.

  • Dell 2005FPW vs. Apple 20'' Cinema Display

I know this is sacrilege, but it is my patriotic duty and right to save $300 on my consumer electronics (after education discount for Apple, and tax, ACD comes out to $756, and Dell comes out to $453; both are out the door prices).
Is there a difference in quality between the 20'' Apple Cinema Display and the Dell 2005FWP, or is the difference mainly superfical? What are the advantages disadvantages to either? Do these differences warrant $300I know there was a previous post, but if anyone cares to chime in, please do.
I am running a Powerbook 12'' G4 1.5 GHz, and am consider getting a new Mac Mini in the near future, but just generally speaking...

I've read of a lot of people saying that the 2405 is blindingly bright. To my eyes, that's true, but only if you turn up the brightness to max and change the color temperature setting to 9200K. At brightness around 50/100 and the standard 6500K color, everything's fine for me. Constrast is not adjustable using DVI (which is how it's suppose to be).
But to the question, the Dell 2405 uses a Samsung PVA panel, whereas all the Apple displays use LG-Philips S-IPS panels. Reviews, personal opinions, and your own eyes can tell you one is better over the other. In my experience, I don't consider the LG-Philips 20" and 23" panels (the same panels found in displays by Apple, Dell, HP, Viewsonic) to be anything spectacular. Colors are somewhat bland, black levels aren't as good, and the LCD or coating over the LCD has a grainy appearance that kind of gives off an annoying glittery look. The Samsung panel at 24" looks better to me. But with the 30" LG-Philips panel (shared by the Dell and Apple displays), it's amazing. The grainyness isn't noticable, viewing angles are good across the entire screen (though not with blacks which turn purple at an angle), and color/contrast are good.
Bottom line is that S-IPS panels like in the Apple 23" do have better viewing angles (in which colors don't shift as bad at an angle, and detail isn't lost as badly), but blacks don't look as deep and turn purple at an angle. It's also less bright, but perhaps also has not as good contrast. Color is probably subjective - some will say the 2405 is over-saturated, others will say it's vibrant. I'd try the Apple if the Dell doesn't satisfy you. Both are regarded as the best of the best.

  • How do I get 2560x1600 with a 30" Dell display in Bootcamp on the Retina MBP

I had a MBA 11" that recognized the 30" Dell 3007WFP display at its native resolution.
To get it to work in Mountain Lion I used the "hold option when scaling" trick. Success.
    Bootcamp though isn't working.
Since getting Retina MBP and Mountain Lion Bootcamp NVIDIA graphic drivers installed, I can play games on the Retina at 2880x1800 fine, and the external only works at 1280x800. It shows that it can go up to 2560x1600 but it doesn't actually work.
Is there something wrong with Apple's adapter for Thunderbolt to DVI-D Dual Link and the new drivers or the MBP Retina's Thunderbolt port?  The display is only receiving Single Link instead of Dual Link, limiting the resolution to 1280x800 instead of 2560x1600.

    hi guys
before I bought Retina, I did a little research on the internet...
I remember reading that for the time being, you cannot use retina MBP with other displays at max or higher resolution under bootcamp...
I read that the driver for this retina mbp video card was Apple Mac OsX specific or something like that.
Therefore, no support under other than Mac osx environment yet...
I don't know if I made myself clear...
you can do a little research on the internet and you'll easily find articles talking about this issue...

  • Lion, Dell External Display, no higher resolutions !!!!!

    Hi,
Apologies if this is the wrong area for this to go into... but i think this is a problem with Lion rather than anything else.
Recently got a new MacBook Pro 15" (woo hoo !!!) and its running Lion.
When i go into the System Preferences > Display, the highest resolution is showing up as 1680x1050. That's fine.
Now when i plug my Dell 3007WFP external monitor into the laptop the maximum resolution that i can select is 1280x800. It recognizes the display, but just doesn't have the higher resolutions for me to be able to select.
I didn't have this problem with my old 17" MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard.
Any ideas on what the problem might be, and how i can fix it ???
Thanks in advance for all suggestions...
    Silver

    Update...
Found the solution to the problem...
Basically, its nothing to do with Lion or a fault on the MacBook Pro...
All new Macbook's ship with the Thunderbolt port. So if you want to plug an external display in which is 30" or more then you need to use a Mini Display Port to Dual Link DVI adapter. I was using a Mini Display to DVI adaptar, so i was basically getting half the resolution (1280x800) !!! Now with the dual link, i have full 2560x1600 glory !!!
Liink to the device at Apple Store... http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
Hope that helps someone else who has the problem.
