Apple Hardware Test (AHT), buzzing noise, fan blows loud, & AHT crashes

Hi there,
I've finally had it with some hardware issues that I've had since day 1 of owning this G5 Dual 1.8.
Running10.4.9 OSX...
Nothing that has affected my day to day working-yet, but growing problems, fans get loud, awful buzzing noise from inside the tower comes and goes and grows in volume when it's happening. I believe it's coming from the internal drive bays... Both of which are filled with 2 new SATA Seagate internals that don't appear to be slowing up or spinning a processing error when I'm working...
When I run an Apple Hardware Test, The AHT disc crashes each time at the 5 minute and :12 second mark while "In Progress" on the "Mass Storage" test, it freezes and the fan gets loud. I do a hard restart to get up and running ok each time afterwards.
I've never received a complete AHT result of tests summary, ever, so I don't know what's really wrong, ever. But I know something is not right. Using Disk Utility is a joke, SMART status is always "verified" of course, no obvious system software errors.
I'm using the disc that came with my G5 "Additional Software Apple Hardware Test":
AHT Version 2.2.2
Disc Version: 1.1
I've scoured Apple knowledge base for anything on this version-but nothing.
Any suggestions please. IS there any hardware testing software out there besides the faulty AHT disc software Apple provides? The nearest Apple store is over an hour and half away, I just don't have time to drive there to hear the same thing I already know, and if I could pinpoint the problem myself with proper software, I can handle doing the maintenance....
Please help!
Thanks!
DAve

Some G5s had a firmware update that caused problems with the version of Apple Hardware Test that shipped with the G5. The Latest G5 Apple Hardware Test is 2.2.5
Call Apple and see if you can get it.
Another hardware test is TechTool Pro

Meanwhile, try testing with some of the RAM removed. Try different combinations of RAM modules and slots. Always use them in pairs.

  • Fan runs all the time.. Apple Hardware Test Error

The fan on my 13" Macbook Pro recently started running continously. I tried resseting the SMC per directions on the apple support page, when that didnt work I ran the Apple Hardware Test from my install cd, and got the following error: 4SNS/1/4000000 : TNOD-128.000
I've googled everywhere, and can't find what that means!
    Any ideas?

Hi Alex FLB, welcome to Apple Discussions!
I had this exact error code (4SNS/1/4000000) on my iMac a couple months ago, along with the same symptoms. The code refers to one or more faulty temperature sensors on the logic board of the unit. Because the MBP isn't getting a reading from a temperature sensor, it has no idea what the actual temperature of the computer is, so it runs the fans at high speed in a fail-safe mode to prevent damage.
What this means is that you'll have to either take the machine to an Apple store or call Applecare over the phone to initiate a repair. Tell them the symptoms, and have them run the AHT or give them the code. If the machine is still under the one year warranty (or Applecare) then the logic board should be replaced free of charge for you. It's the only way to replace these temperature sensors, as they are incorporated into the board itself and cannot be separated from it.
If you Google "AHT 4SNS/1/4000000" then you may be able to find more information!

  • 2008 iMac running beautifully untill recently. Screen glitches and freezing. Apple Hardware test showed error code  4MOT/2/40000004:ADD and I have not seen others with this code. Guessing it is a fan issue based on the ODD and HDD error codes

computer felt hot and while running apple hardware test the screen glitches covered the screen and it froze. Now computer wont boot up. Again AHT code is 4MOT/2/40000004:ADD and I have just seen ODD and HDD codes discussed on other threads. Those were hardrive or superdrive fans, so I am guessing this is a fan issue and then it fried by graphics card. Any help as to whether this is game over or worth repairing would be very appreciated.

You need to take it to your local Apple Store or AASP for a professional evaluation. Apple does not publish the codes from AHT, you can Google the code you got and see if you can determine what it means however the best method is to let a pro handle it.

  • Apple Hardware Test (AHT) Hard Drive Full Read Fail But SMART Status OK

I have a Mac mini Server from Mid 2010 running Snow Leopard Server.
Ocassionally, it'll freeze up with the spinning beachball wheel for a few minutes. This usually happens when opening an app or performing an app function from the menu bar. It's a pretty clean system—there are not many apps installed.
I suspect it's a hadrware issue. I ran Disk Utility's Permission and Disk Repair. All good. SMART Status is verified. So I ran the Apple Hardware Test. Everything passes except for the Hard Drive's "Full Read"—it fails because "Reading took longer than the average time". The Hard Drive "Short .. test" and "Check SMART Status" pass.
Does anyone have an idea of what's going on here? Is the hard drive the issue? I don't understand how there can be a read issue (or hard drive issue), when the SMART Status is verfied.

S.M.A.R.T isn't perfect. Neither is AHT for that matter, but if it is reporting that reading is taking longer than it should then an impending failure is likely. The occasional "wait cursor" appearance supports that diagnosis.
Consider yourself fortunate in that you still have the ability to back up anything important, and you can plan a convenient time for its replacement.

  • Apple Hardware Test (AHT) is GONE!! after Lion install

After installing Lion on my new early 2011 MBP the AHT is gone...
Pressing "D" will not load the AHT (it was installed and working fine in my MBP prior to Lion).
I called the APP hotline to inquire about it and the technician couldn't boot into the AHT on all the macs with Lion available to him.
(a report has been filed with the engineering team)
According to the newly updated KB: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
QUOTE: "Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet."
After pressing and holding the "D" key the Mac just loads into the desktop... There is no online AHT or pre-installed AHT available...
    >> Is anybody else having this problem?? <<
If you are having the same problem maybe you should also report it to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ or the APP hotline...

HOW TO FIX THE AHT PROBLEM IN LION:
Just to clarify what Francisco was saying in Spanish:
    > The original AHT that came preinstalled in the MacBook Pro (and maybe all other Macs) is found in disk #2.
    > Originally I thought the AHT had a different partition on the HD but it ends up being an extension of the OS.
    > This is not installed in OS X Lion, If you used the USB key or download it from the App Store, the AHT will not be included.
    > So, to install it back in, you can either run the install from the DVD (just make sure you don't install iLife again and other files which you may not need)
    OR
    For Road Warriors
Since installing the bundled package will also install other Snow Leopard files; You might want to try this:
    > Download Pacifist ( http://www.charlessoft.com/ )
    > Drill down the CPUHelpFiles install package and only install the CPU_AHT package.
By the way, there is no way of undoing this, unless you want to reinstall Lion from the recovery partition.
    > Restart your mac
    > Everything should be A+ ok
    > To test what you just installed restart the mac and hold down the "D" key before the screen turns white/gray. After a few seconds you should see the AHT loading screen:
Done! there is no need to have that DVD with you when you travel...

  • AHT Apple Hardware Test Download & Flash Drive

    Hi guys,
I really need to test the hardware on a 13" MBP. Full spec below.
The machine has Yosemite installed & I don't have the original install disc.
Does anyone know where to download the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) files & how to go about using it with a flash drive and a restart?
I've read this can be done but have only found dead links on old websites.
Holding down 'D' or 'Alt+D' isn't working, which I believe is due to the new operating system not having AHT.
    Thanks!
    Macbook Pro Spec:
    MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.7 13" Early 2011

"Wanted to download this as I'm not sure I can put my hands on the original 10.3 install disc. "
You will need to find it as the AHT is on the *machine specific* System Install DVD 1. If you lost your System DVDs, you can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.

  • Apple Hardware Test (AHT) invoked at startup with 'ALT-D' not 'D'

Although several reasonnaably reliable sources (including such page as http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1533 ) mention that pressing 'D' at startup will invoke the Apple Hardware Test startup option, at leats on my Macbook Pro 2011 with OSX Lion, EFI 2.8 it is really 'ALT-D' that invokes AHT not 'D'. Pressing the 'D' at startup simply seems to hangs bootup until I release the key.

  • Apple Hardware Test AHT

    Hi,
I would like to run the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) on my MacPro(2,1) and since I have upgraded from Panther through Leopard to Snow Leopard, I have misplaced the original installation disks that came with my Mac Pro. Is there anyway to run AHT without those original install disks? Is there somewhere to download the images that I need?
    TIA .... Jon

You will have to call AppleCare and arrange to purchase replacements. There are no alternative sources for the AHT for your Mac Pro.

  • Cannnot start AHT Apple Hardware Test from Anywhere PERIOD

I cannot start the AHT. Apple hardware test for the life of me, been trying for days.
I have the latest Boot ROM for Internet recovery, as such, I did read the Apple doc for this and have memorized it.
I have an early 2011 MBP, I came with Lion and I upgraded to Mountain Lion.
I do not have install disk, it did not come with any.
I need a major guru, I think I have bad memory or a app app.

  • My Mid-2011 iMac with pre-installed Lion can't load AHT (Apple Hardware Test) over internet

I have a Mid-2011 iMac (3.4GHz) of which Apple's Support document for the Apple Hardware Test (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509) says:
Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet. These computers will start up to an Internet-based version of AHT if the hard drive does not contain AHT.
Well, this doesn't work for me. My Mac is on a DHCP-supporting router which has constant internet connection. Yet, when I turn off the Mac and then on again, holding the D key down even before the screen turns on, the Mac does indeed react to this key as it's then turning the screen on and taking another about half minute before it continues with the boot process along with showing the Mac symbol. Without the D, the Mac symbol comes up quickly.
So, it appears that the iMac is indeed trying to get AHT over the internet. Just that it doesn't succeed in it, and probably timing out after a while.
Any suggestions how to fix this?

    Re
    extract from kb article
PPPoE (where there is no router handling the PPPoE connection)
    No
    No
Captive-Networks (where you click an "Agree" button to access the Internet)
    Yes
    No
Proxies (where specific proxy servers must be configured in network preferences)
    No
    No
    Certificate-based authentication / 802.1x
    No
    No
try check if you are in that case for your internet acces ?
could be a firewall problem too , if is possible try desable firewall ( or any internet filter )
no you can not see a wifi selection if you are wired ( using cable )
by the way D key for AHT need to be pressed AFTER start up sound , and hold at min one minute

  • COOL FEATURE - Apple Hardware Test (AHT) built-in. No disc needed!

It's a MacBook Late 2007... it would be interesting to see what other models have this feature.
    Start the Mac
    hold the D key
do NOT put in your installer disc
it starts up Apple Hardware Test (AHT) in like 5 seconds. No disc needed. VERY COOL
(unfortunately, it seems to have been disabled after I did the Keyboard Firmware Update)

Some G5s had a firmware update that caused problems with the version of Apple Hardware Test that shipped with the G5. The Latest G5 Apple Hardware Test is 2.2.5

  • HT201257 I have a slow boot up, so I wanted to run Apple Hardware Test. AHT never starts

I have a slow boot up, so I wanted to run Apple Hardware Test.
AHT never starts based on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509 but AHT does not come up. Tried it 20 times, no success. I have iMac 2011 w/ Lion. What should I do.

    Hi Titan,
My system didn came with the disk. I have used disk utility to repair the disk, because it showed a boot sector problem during disk verification process. I started disk utility using Cmd+R at startup. The problem was fixed. Not the disk verifies without error.
However, the initial gery screen at startup still take more than two minutes after with the apple icon appears.
    Thanks.

  • Yet another pointless question about the practically non-existent iMac G5 Apple Hardware Test (AHT) disk.

    I have a 17" iMac G5 (iSight model) also known as model A1144, PowerMac12,1 or MA063LL/A.
Where do I download the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) disk for this machine? Apparently nowhere. However, it would really help me on my quest if I knew what I was looking for.
Does anyone know what AHT version is compatable with my machine? 2.2.1? 2.3.1?
How about the part number on the disk? I have some Intel disks that say 2Z691-5734-A that (obviously) won't work.
Is the AHT on Disk 1 or Disk 2? I'm starting to think there never was an AHT for this model.
Where do I get those ASD disks the so called "geniuses" have?

    Disk 1: 2Z691-53179-A
    Disk 2: 2Z691-5493-A
    Compatible with eMac (2005), iBook G4 (Late 2004), iBook G4 (Mid 2005), iMac G5 17-inch (ALS), iMac G5 20-inch (ALS), iMac G5 (17-inch iSight), iMac G5 (20-inch iSight), iMac (Early 2006 17-inch), iMac (Early 2006 20-inch), Mac mini, Mac mini (Late 2005), Mac mini (Early 2006), MacBook Pro, Power Mac G5 (Early 2005), Power Mac G5 (Late 2005), PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD), PowerBook G4 (17-inch Double-Layer SD)

AHT I think was on a seperate CD.

  • G5 Full Speed Fans/ The Apple Hardware Tests Error Code

Since yesterday My DP1.8 G5's fans are max speed like jet engine. I tried PMU resets , Disk warrior. But nothing helps. The Apple Hardware Test gave me error code of "post/192/0" . Do you guys know what does this error code mean?
    Thank you.

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
I think thast the error is related to the "Power On Self Test", or POST. When you start the machine, are there any beeps, or power button LED flashes? If there is a POST error at startup, the power LED would flash in cadence with the beeps..
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
Do you have any new RAM installed?
