Apple Hardware Test Problem!!!

I've been having problems with my 4 month old G5 and so I ran the AHT.First I ran the extensive test and the whole thing froze after 3 minutes.I turned the computer off and on again.It started up like nothing hapened.I restarted,ran the short test and the same thing happened at 1 min 55sec of the test. The computer seems to be running fine but when it's frozen up I'm afraid I have two red led's on the front (I take that's the logic board?) it seems to be LED#1 and LED#3.
I wouldn't bother anyone but the closes reliable Apple Certfied Service Provider is 230 kilometers away...seriously.

A new version of OSX will not affect the hardware test because the hardware test doesn't use the operating system. It will run even if the hard drive is empty. It is possible that a firmware update might require a new version hardware test. If the hardware test is failing, remove any non-Apple hardware (RAM, PCI boards, etc.), unplug all FireWire and USB devices (except mouse and keyboard), and try the test again. If it still fails, call Apple. If you need a newer version of the hardware test, they will let you now.

Hi All. I have a very weird problem here, as I can't get the Apple Hardware Test to start on my late 2008, 2.66 MBP15 inch model# MC026LL/A (released early 2009 as a quiet upgrade from 2.53). Here's the story:
I opened up my machine as usual one morning, and the optical drive made a very weird noise I never heard before. So I decided to run the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) to see if anything was amiss. Well, I inserted the second install disk, held down the "d" key, and restarted the machine. It began to boot into the hardware test, but just after the AHT screen appears the computer just shut down. This happens every time I try to run the AHT.
I went to an Apple Store while I was on holiday in Brisbane (they don't have one here in Adelaide), and the genius said it was likely a bad optical drive. Well, I returned to Adelaide last week and had the local Apple Authorized store replace the optical drive. Tried to run AHT once again, and the same problem persists. So the original problem wasn't with the optical drive.
I thought maybe I accidentally used the startup disks for my wife's late 2008 15inch, 2.4, MBP (the one actually released in late 2008). I've looked around for the other sets of disks and can't find them. So here's what I'm asking help for: can someone who owns a 15inch MBP 2.66 15-inch (released in early 2009, model# MC026LL/A ) please tell me what the part # is for their set of install disks? It is written on the plastic sleeves of the install disks. And, could this person please tell which version of AHT is written on the disk itself? The set I have (which I think might be my wife's) has AHT version 3A158.
Might this be the problem, or should my computer still be able to run the hardware test using my wife's disks? I know they are both technically late-2008 15inch unibody MBPs, but I think my 2.66 (again, quietly updated and released in early 2009) might require a different AHT version, which would explain my inability to run the test. If not, what might be causing my computer to not run the AHT? I tried reinstalling OS X to no avail.

I think I share your skepticism--if your Mac was shipped with the later version of the OS, you should not have been able to do a clean install with discs of an earlier version. It looks like some machines originally shipped with OS X v. 10.5.5 and others with OS X v. 10.5.6. I don't remember just when 10.5.6 came out.
Your two machines are likely very similar in build, and maybe similar enough for the OS to install. It may be that the AHT is specifically designed for the hardware in each machine, and that would be a bit different.
As someone else said in another thread, there ought to be a tutorial on how to keep track of the original install discs since they are always getting lost. Maybe a secure note in the keychain or something like that.
Out of curiosity, does the AHT work on your wife's machine? If not, there could be a problem with the install disc itself, and if so, you might be able to get a free replacement under warranty.

I did an Apple Hardware Test, (where you restart your computer while holding down D and Apple detects if you have an problems on your computer). And I was notified that I had this problem: "4SNS/1/40000001:1DOR-0.000" What does this mean? How do I fix this problem?

Apple Hardware Test problem on Mountain Lion

I;ve been trying to do the Apple Hardware Test with no success. I've tried holding down D and option-D yet nothing. My macbook just boots up as normal. It is recommended to download the EPI firmware upgrade fro Lion recovery. That one is just not compatible with my system and could not install it. What's next? Can I just download the AHT from somewhere?

Disk repair and Apple Hardware Test says HD has no problem but grey screen still persists on MBP

5 days ago while on vacation, my MBP just froze with the grey screen, apple logo and spinning gear.
I performed all that was instructed on the following discussions:

except Archive and Install installation of MAC OS X and Erase and Install MAC OS X since I was able to save my files in my husband's MBP via Firewire Target Disk Mode. At this point, I am still apprehensive in erasing my files and installing again the MAC OS X.
When I did the Disk Repair under the Disk utilities, it says that my Mac Os X is ok. (It also said ok when I did the fsck -fy when I till did not have my CD when I was on vacation)
I also tried the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) to further l test the hardware of my MBP and performed an extended checking and after an hour, its says that my HD has no problem.
Yet, after all these, when I restart my computer, it still has the grey screen with apple logo and spinning wheel!
Can anyone tell me what else can I do??? Appreciate any help!

I like the free demo of SuperDuper to make clones. It's free, Leopard and Snow ready and is easy to use. If you buy the full version you can do incremental backups.
You should use Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, booted up on your install disk, before you make a clone of it. I use DiskWarrior for that instead.
I then partition my external disk, in Disk Utility, with a partition that is the same size , actually a tad bigger, as my system disk. I then use SuperDuper to clone my system disk over to that partition.
With a clone on an external FireWire drive (USB drives are not bootable on PPC Macs but are on some Intel Macs) you can bootup on it to do your repairs, on the main drive, or just run your Mac anytime you have trouble with your main drive.
That's why I like clones better then Time Machine. You can just bootup on them and use your Mac.
On the DiskWarrior thing, I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand. It has repaired every little and big issue I have ever had with my three Macs.
And I have had times when Disk Utility's Disk Repair says everything's fine but my system was still having issues. Disk Utility, in my experience, cannot be totally relied on to find and report all issues. It just isn't robust enough.
I run DiskWarrior, it does find errors, repairs them and I'm back in business. I swear by it!

That sensor is reacting to the temperature at the CPU power bus. Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation. This is a hardware problem with no software solution.

Before you go through that trouble open About this Mac > More Info... > System Report > Audio and see if the system actually knows it has a microphone. Then you can look into Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup and see if the microphone is there, select it and make sure the sliders are set to full. Then in System Preferences look for Sound > Input and make sure it shows up there and the sliders are at least half way up. If none of that works do a

Apple Hardware Test : mother board problem : post/16/64

I'm having this problem since last month. My computer won't boot properly, aligning lines and lines on the screen saying there's a problem with cpu 1 or cpu 0. I reset all Xram I could find, reset the PMU, changed the battery...
Finally, I used Apple Hardware Test that gave me this message : post/16/64 on mother board at startup. Then, when I run the tests, everything's OK !
I manage to boot from time to time with 10.4.7 only, other installed systems won't do it.
Would anybody have a clue about this ?

I have some good news for you all : I finally decided to open my machine and see what's inside...
I took a small paint brush, a screwdriver, a pressurized air bomb (hope you call it this way) and cleaned all the inside. I had some parts taken off, even the big thing that gets heat from the processors. My brother, who knows more than I do about the subject even advised me to unplug the processors, supposedly connected on a ZIF card (Zero Insertion Force card). I didn't manage to make them move at all. I took memory bars away, the video card too, to make place for the screwdriver to unlock the (radiator ?). Then I brushed all the dirt away, there was plenty, and put everything back inside.
It works fine, it really does. So, I guess and hope this will last for an other 4 years.

Problems running Apple Hardware Test

I'm trying to run the Apple Hardware Test, but it never seems to start. I've tried holding down the C and option keys on restart, but all that happens is that the disk is ejected, and when I push it back in the computer restarts as normal. Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks for the for the suggestion, but holding down D doesn't work either. As the computer starts up, the disk ejects (whether there's a disc in there or not), no matter what I'm holding down. And when I push it back in there's a lot of whirring, indicating the disk is spinning, but the computer starts up as normal; no hardware test. Any ideas what's wrong?

Apple Logo would not display and Hardware test problem?

HI all, sorry i am new to posting here, so apologize if my answer to the below is in this forum but i could not find it. What it is:
My mac mini when I started it up today, was not displaying the apple logo, it was just showing its white screen and it just would not move from it. I tried doing an apple hardware test by re-starting holding the button D while re-starting nothing happen. I had to disconnect all external items such as my external HD and ipod and then it became back to normal.
1st question is, why did this happen and how?
2nd question is, how come my apple hardware test does not work?
I have tried apple hardware test using the install disc for a mac pro which has leopard on it, for my mini as i don't have the install for my mini any more. But even then I should still be able to use the apple hardware test without the discs though shouldn't i?
Please note though my HD has been replaced twice before by apple. Can anyone give some input?
Also my mac is an intel based back got its late 2006 model.
I have also run disk utility and it has found nothing wrong at all with my mac.

If AppleCare gives you a Tiger Install Disc for your system, accept it, since it's the way to perform the AHT on your machine (also, it's free!).
About the Leopard disc, I don't know which OS you're running, since you changed your profile info from 10.5.6 to 10.4.10. Are you using Tiger Or Leopard?
If you're running Leopard, you'll need a Retail Leopard Install Disc (the one you can pick up from a store shelf) to do an Archive and Install. Your machine was made in 2006, before the release of Leopard, so there's no Leopard machine specific disc for your model.
Archive and Install is the way to reinstall the Operative System without loosing your files and settings.
Also, if you ever need to repair your startup volume with Disk Utility, you'll need to boot from the install DVD, and you can only do it with the install disc of the OS you're currently running. You can't use a previous version OS install disc, as it could have nasty consequences on the directory structure integrity.
If you want an "el cheapo" Leopard Retail Disc, you can search for it on the web. Also, when Snow Leopard hits the street, some retailers will probably sell out the previous version inventory.

Can't boot off Apple Hardware Test disk

Can anyone suggest why my laptop won't boot off of its Apple Hardware Test disk anymore? I have not tried it in years, but want to try now. I have the original, and a copy I made years ago, and neither will boot. I can select them at startup disks in that preference pane in OSX, but then it fails to find it, and boots into OSX. I can boot into OS9 on the hard drive. I was able to partially boot off of a different AHT disk from my 12" Albook G4, but it gave the message that I can't use that disk since it is not meant for the Tibook. One idea is that TechTool tells me that "macintosh startup file was absent", and the Help file states:
"The Startup file is intended for use by systems that do not have built-in ROM support for booting from HFS Extended volumes. The first eight extents of the Startup File are stored in the Volume Header. This makes them easy to locate and read into memory. This file contains information used by the computer’s ROM to determine what program will boot the computer. In almost every case, this will be configured to point to the preferred System."
But it does not tell me how to restore this Startup file.
-how can i get my startup file back?
-my computer boots fine off the hard drive, so is this file used only to boot off a CD?
-any ideas why i can't boot off my AHT CD?

Hi, t. (That alias of yours sure is a mouthful.) I think in your shoes I would pose the question to the tech support people at Micromat (TechTool's developer). It's their error message, after all, and they should be able to explain it to you in as much detail as you need. Perhaps they'll shed some light on the original problem in the process.

Error Code After Running Apple Hardware Test

I ran apple hardware test (I'm having problems where my computer freezes for like 10 seconds with the mouse being movable... but it happens very frequently. like once a minute. it's SOOO ANNOYING)

Actually, i just spent like 1 hr working with disk utility using the os x install disk and i think it finally worked. im so happy for myself! yay... i wouldnt accept no for an answer. Disk utility kept saying "oh first aid failed because it didnt exit right" or something... total garbage response... i kept pressing verify disk and then repair disk and then i did the verify permissions and repair permissions too... didnt really know what i was doing with the permissions... but it finally worked so thats all that mattered! yay... its back to normal!!

G4 that will not boot from any disc EXCEPT the Apple Hardware Test CD

We have a DP 1ghz Quicksilver PowerMac G4 that will not boot from any disc EXCEPT the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with the machine.
We were in the process of installing 10.4 Tiger before placing it for sale.
The Mac was originally OSX Server 10.1 that we later converted to a worksation running 10.3 Panther.
It has 1 GB of memory, 80GB hardrive, 250MB Zip Drive and a Radeon 7500 video card.
Since this machine only has a CD-R drive and not a DVD-R, we installed Tiger using another Mac via Target Disk Mode. The installation process went well, but when I tried to reboot I got a Kernel Panic right after startup screen with the grey Apple logo.
On some reboots we get to the blue startup screen, others it stops at the grey Apple logo, others a black box like the a Kernel Panic - but with no text. Twice it went directly into Open Firmware.
We have done the following during our troubleshooting:
- Reseat RAM, Video Card, Hard Drive, Zip & CD-R connections
- Remove RAM 1 stick at a time and reboot
- Replace RAM with RAM from another working Quicksilver
- Replace Video Card with one from another working Quicksilver
- Zap PRAM
- Reset CUDA switch
- Unplug the MAC and remove everything (RAM, Battery, etc) for 30 minutes and try to reboot
- Tried booting from the Macintosh Server G4 Software Restore CD
- Tried booting from Mac OS X Server CD
- Tried booting from AppleCare Protection Plan CD with TechTool
- Tried booting from Diskwarrior CD
- Tried booting from an external FireWire drive with a disk image of Tiger OS Install
- Tried booting with the hard drive disconnected
The Mac WILL boot from the Apple Hardware Test CD and will pass ALL of the extended tests.

Conventional wisdom says that any Mac that will not boot up from a System/Install CD OS 9 or an Install CD Mac OS X, has a Hardware problem.
The diagnostic CD is a red herring because it uses a very primitive method of reading the CD, and so does not properly represent the machines general ability to read CDs.
I would look at the CD drive cables, etc, and see if another drive gives different results.
You have not mentioned using the Startup Manager (option key at Startup) to do any checking:
