hi guys ive got an apple imac g5
and for some reason it wont run setup from any of the mac dvd's or cd's i have
the superdrive spins up and it does nothing even when i press and hold the letter c' key on the keyboard
the spec is as follows
Imac G5 - 17/1.6/2gb/combo/500gb hd
any help would be greatfull
and another thing can i use my windows based pc to load the os via target mode useing firwire

Go to your OS Help Menu. In the search field type dvd or cd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility. Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

My 27" iMac Freezes, Won't boot from DVD
My iMac has started to freeze up every few minutes. Every so often, it becomes unresponsive; the mouse cursor still moves (sometimes it turns into a beach ball), but I can't click or type anything. Whenever this happens, the hard drive begins to churn as if it's reading or writing something big. This usually lasts only about thirty seconds to a minute, but it's happening with frustrating regularity.
I've been trying to troubleshoot this for a few days, now. I'll walk you through the steps I've tried so far.
I ran a check on the hard drive with Disk Utility. This came back with a message about the files/directories not matching up with their expected counts. The solution it suggested was to boot from a Snow Leopard disc and let Disk Utility run a Repair Disk while the startup drive is not mounted. It was at this point that I realized that I couldn't boot from the dvd. Whether holding 'C' or 'Option', when it tries to boot from the disc, it gets to the Apple logo and then hangs.
I kept researching and found a workaround; boot into Single User Mode and perform fsck, which fixed the Disk Utility error, but did not solve the freezes/noises, and I still can't boot from the dvd.

Well, I'm not sure if I explained it clearly. Holding the Option key does indeed bring up a list of bootable devices. The problem arises when control is passed to the Snow Leopard disc. The Apple logo flashes, I can hear the optical drive being accessed, but then it locks up.
I should also clarify that it's not the disc that came with the iMac. I just moved and can't find the original disc, so I borrowed my neighbor's (which came from a Macbook he bought after mine (which I bought last year)). I am under the impression that Macs can't boot from discs that are older than the version of OS X that they shipped with. I wouldn't think that's the issue, here, as his came out later than mine, but I've still got a lot to learn about life in the Appleverse.
My data should be safe--I've got an up to date Time Machine backup on an external drive. The performance issues aside, I'm really looking to understand the underlying problem(s) here.
So, one option is that the RAM might be bad. I can test that by swapping out each DIMM and checking if the problem is resolved. One thing I don't understand, though, is why bad RAM would manifest as the hard drive being accessed. Is there a definitive way to test the logic board, as there is for testing RAM?
Also, I keep thinking of other little syptoms which may or may not be related.
Recap of Symptoms:
Magic Mouse occasionally loses its magic (right click, multitouch, etc.) and needs to be turned off and on.
Free disk space fluctuates by as much as eight gigs (without my intervention).
System stalls (accompanied by HD access sounds) multiple times per hour.
Can't boot from dvds (though, this could be a version problem).
**Fixed: Disk Utility Verify Disk error.
I do understand that this might be a hardware error, and I certainly know how much trouble that sort of thing is to find/fix. I'm definitely willing to open the case and swap out DIMMs and drives, but not until I've exhausted my software solution options. *crosses fingers* -

I am trying to get my old iMac up and running again and I would like to install Creative Suite CS4 from the DVDs I have got.
The problem is that the computers DVD-drive doesn't recognize DVDs anymore (it's an iMac 1.25GHz PowerPC G4, 20" flat screen).
Any suggestions?

G5 iSight Wont Boot Tiger From DVD!!
Hello All,
I am a Mac amateur and I am having trouble with an iMac G5 iSight.
I am considered the IT man of the family but have little experience with Macs but understand that they don't install/function like pcs.
Here's my problem. My Uncle has this iSight G5 and has hardly ever used it since he bought it so I have took it off him. He has a user and password prompt at the startup(can't remember either). He says he doesn't want anything thats on the machine so I thought I'd do a clean install/erase from inserting the install disc and holding down the 'option' key at startup to boot to the dvd but when I do this, it only shows the Macintosh Disk and no Install Disc icon to start the install. I also heared that pressing the c key at start up will boot to the cd but this does nothing and just boots up OS X as normal of the hard drive. I am doing this with the original backup disks but also tried with a copy of OS X 10.4.2 but that isnt recognised when booting with the option key held. This is driving me mad. My brother has a 'non' iSight G5 and doing the option key reboot with the G5 restore disk you can see the install icon and same applies to the Tiger install DVD.
Can anyone help?

iMac G5 iSight Mac OS X (10.4.2)Not only is installing the right files a concern with the Target Disk Mode method, the iSight's installer disk may refuse to install anything at all since in TDM the iSight's drive appears as just another drive attached to the non-iSight model. If the installer is like the one for my rev B model, the only OS install option also installs the bundled iLife apps. Since these apps are otherwise a retail product, the installer may check for a matching model & refuse to run because it will detect a non-iSight one.
Other things to consider:
A. The iSight model is not constructed like the two earlier iMac G5's to be user serviceable. The case back does not come off; rather, the front bezel & LCD screen must be removed to access the interior components. Since this was not designed to be done by users, this involves carefully removing a taped in place black film mask, removing hard to reach Torx head screws, & handling the bare LCD screen assembly. This would almost certainly void the warranty & might damage something if done by the inexperienced.
B. Find out if the iSight model was registered with Apple by the original owner. If so, have it transfered to your name so you can call Applecare with your issues. Also consider the Applecare extended protection plan. -

Is it possible to run an application (either an .exe or .app file) from a menu architected in Encore? I have a DVD project, to which I created a desktop counterpart. I would like to give my user the option of running the desktop version. I know I can create a DVD with Video TS files and data files.... I was wondering, is it possible, if the DVD video files are ran from a desktop (Mac or PC), from the main menu of the DVD launch an application file (EXE or APP).

What you could do is create a menu entry that goes to a title screen with instructions of what to do on a computer, and then put your computer content in the ROM section when you build the disc
But, as far as I know, the user will have to navigate to that section to view computer files, or run an EXE, manually

Basically I recently installed Firefox 3.6 on my Mac Laptop, only 3-4 months old, so latest Sea Leopard OSX System whatever
Anyway once installed I decide to have a theme, then add some add on applications. This seems to be the problem
When I first tried to run it all the apps opened home pages and I kept trying to close them as they did
Next time I got less pages but then I could not access the Tools>AddOns menu before the Firefox browser crashed
What seems to be happening is that the Weather app takes forever to load, my Apple Mac goes into the circle (thinking) mode which means I cannot activate any menus or move my mouse. Then by the time I try and type in say google in the blank www URL address the browser crashed. I have tried going into safe mode using the Option but makes no difference
If I can somehow instal the irksome weather app or get access to the Tool >Add ons menu and uninstall each of the several apps I have daftly installed I know I can get a solution

hi i bought a hp pavillion all in one pc. they lady i purchased it off had restored it to factory settings. i bought it home plugged it in and turned it on. it gets to setup is starting then a window pops up saying the computer was restarted abruptly or an unexpected error occurred please restart computer to restart setup. trouble is thats all it keeps doing please can someone help me please.

i just bought an apple tv and it wont stream music from my imac. when i click on the apple tv music icon it accesses the itunes store and brings up only that music i have purchased from apple instead of all the music i have stored in itunes on my imac.
The music icon will only access your purchased music. You need to go to the computer icon. It must be on and running iTunes, and home-sharing enabled in order for it to be accessible to Apple TV

Running Hardware Test or Running Mac OS X from DVD with an older iMac
I have a 4 year old iMac which is running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and using a wired aluminum keyboard along with a Magic Mouse. I recently had some files corrupted so that when I booted up, the dock would not load and could not run any programs. It appeared to me that Finder wasn't working properly.
In any event, I tried to run the Apple Hardware Test from the Snow Leopard DVD by starting the computer and pressing the D key but the computer would not boot off the DVD and continued booting off the hard drive.
I also tried starting the computer with the C key to try and do a reinstall of OS X, again with same result.
I ended up bringing the computer to Genius Bar at local Apple Store. The tech guy plugged an older styled white plastic keyboard and the computer recognized the D and C keys during start up. He then did a recovery of OS with no problems.
He downloaded a firmware update for me to install when I got home. When I tried to install the update, updater said firmware update is not needed.
At the moment, I'm in the same position as before. The computer runs fine but I still can not boot off the DVD because the aluminum keyboard's keys are recognized at startup.
Any ideas on firmware update to rectify this? Don't have the older plastic keyboard and seems silly to have an old one on hand in case computer acts up.I tried resetting the PRAM but since keyboard keys are not recognized on booting up, holding the CONTROL, COMMAND, P & R keys didn't work. I noticed that on older Power PC Macs that holding Power On button continuously while starting up would force computer into Open Firmware so PRAM could be reset. This didn't work for me.
I also reset the SMC.
When I look in Utilities, I see that Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0 is installed last modified on Oct. 8, 2009. I've had the keyboard much longer than that so not sure what that means. When I clicked it, it said firmware is up to date.
In any event, is there any way to force a firmware update even if my computer says the firmware is up to date? Thanks -

I am running 10.8 and setup airport extreme to run music from my imac to my receiver in the other room. When I open sound from system preferences, I don't see an external device to choose, other then internal speakers. Any ideas?
Airport Express (the small Airport device, which is the only one with an audio connection) works through Airtunes, which only works with iTunes. The computer won't send ALL system sound to the Airport. If you actually want to send sound outside of iTunes, use Airfoil.

My iMac 24" Aluminium (november 2008) can't boot, completely frozen, although all HW are perfectly working.
I'll try to explain the issue best I can.
SYMPTOMS
- Grey screen of death without Apple's logo.
- No bootable devices detected (either HDD or DVD) by EFI, when you hold ALT (Option) while booting.
- No way to force boot from DVD.
CAUSE OF PROBLEMS
a) HDD has 3 partitions created by DiskUtils:
/dev/disk0s2= Mac OS(HFS+)
/dev/disk0s3= Linux DVD Installer (FAT32)
/dev/disk0s4= User Data(HFS+).
b) rEFIt installed and fully working on the system ( http://refit.sourceforge.net/ )
c) Linux DVD installer partition was filled this way:
dd if=/path/to/linux.iso of=/dev/disk0s3
As you can see, there are no HW errors at all, everything was perfectly working before dumping the Linux iso into FAT partition.
TRIALS FOLLOWED (and all its combinations).
TRIAL 1 - Erasing EFI values on memory.
Leave the iMac disconnected from power cord a whole night for memories to loose their values.

- Shutdown and fill one bank with memory.

- Boot from DVD (C key hold) -> Access DVD first, but no boot.
TRIAL 6 - Boot from external Mac (Firewire + PC fully working).
This is the only trial missing before replacing the HDD of the unit... finger crossed.

In the process of dealing with iMac booting problems I organized a test bed which allow to detect where the booting is failing:
STAGE 0 - Setting initial boot memory conditions.
STAGE 1 - Reset NVRAM memory to factory defaults.
STAGE 2 - Booting from external device.
STAGE 3 - Reinstall iMac firmware.
STAGE 4 - Hardware intervention.
Before running the test bed:
a) Unplug all devices except USB keyboard (no wireless keyboard, no mouse... you can plug an USB mouse once you see the graphical user interface up and running).
b) Combination of keys available on booting:

This bundle of tests must be executed before any test of next stages.
TEST 0.1 - Erasing booting memory values.
Leave the iMac disconnected from all wires (especially power cord) for 15 minutes for memories to loose their values.

a) Introduce Apple's Mac OS original DVD on the unit.
b) Run Test 0.1 and Test 0.2
=> Force DVD as Booting Device.
c) Press power button.
d) Press C key while black screen, before you hear the chime.
e) Keep hold the C key until you see the MacOS installer window.

b) From power off state, press the power button and continue to hold it down until the "Sleep" LED blinks rapidly three times, then slowly three times, then rapidly three more times... this could be chimes, instead of LED blinks! Keep the power button pressed down.
c) Insert the Firmware Restoration CD you have burned into the iMac's CD drive, then release the power button.
d) Monitor the "Progress Bar" beneath the Apple logo as the restoration process updates your iMac's firmware, taking care not to disconnect the power, shut down your computer or restart your computer (otherwise, you will have to start over). The iMac will restart automatically once the firmware restoration is complete.
TEST 3.2 - Using Apple's Propietary Software.

What is the best way to handle IOException thrown by ServerSocket's accept() method?

CO Order type in derivation rule
Hi, I want to derive fund centers based on Plant Maintenance Order Type. But field 'Order Type' is not available in FM derivation rules. Can I add some user fields such as Order Type. Regards Manish
