Apple mail formatting Question

I just bought a MBAir and in using Apple mail I cannot seem to format email replies to contain an extra two lines of blank space above the original email.  Is there a way to format email replies to do this automatically?

Roland,
What is the question? The reference to the system administrator, is more in reference to how the IMAP server is configured. Does this IMAP work, as expected?

  • Apple Mail - 2 questions

First off, let me explain the system I have set up. Before I got a Mac, I had a gmail account which I used as my main account. I also had a university account and I forwarded all university mail to the gmail account. The cool thing about gmail is that it has this function where I can not only read but send emails from my Gmail ID or my University ID. This is handy because it allows me to use gmail all the time (whether I'm emailing a friend or emailing a professor) rather that having to sign in to my university's server to email my professors.
Now, I use Apple Mail which is linked only to the Gmail account that is linked to my University account (hope you get that). The only problem is when I send mails through Apple Mail, it will only send them using my Gmail ID rather than my university ID. I've tried going to Preferences and selecting my outgoing mail server (SMTP) to my university's server but whenever i send a mail through Apple Mail it still sends it out from the Gmail server. What can I do to fix this problem?
Also, when I access Gmail from another computer and send mails, it goes to my Apple Mail as an unread message. How do I set up a filter so that any message sent by me will be "Marked as Read" when it gets to Apple Mail?

Well that stinks. There's no point in me adding the reply-to address if my professors still see that I sent the original mail from my gmail account. A lot of my professors don't read their emails unless if it comes from a University address. In fact, if I try to send a mass email to the class through a non-university address (even with a reply-to my uni address) it will not work.
    So can I do this?
    1. Keep my gmail account linked to my Uni account (this is a must)
    2. Set up Apple Mail so that it receives email from both University account and Gmail account
    3. Set up a rule so that all mail from my Gmail account that was sent To: [email protected] is not downloaded or immediately deleted? That way the mail downloaded from my University account is only downloaded once to Apple Mail.

  • How can I copy-paste text from Firefox to Apple Mail preserving all formatting? It works with Safari but not with Firefox, otherwise I'd pick Firefox

I have a very big list of correspondents to whom I often send articles.
I cannot copy them from Firefox and paste them onto Apple Mail because they look WEIRD and not at all like the original. Most formatting disappears.
I do not encounter the same problem with Safari, and THAT is one of the two reasons I am forced to use it even if it gives me lots of problems.
The other one is that Safari 5 has a built-in RSS reader, which is essential for my work.
If you could manage to have those two things working, I'd pick Firefox in a second and advertise the fact to thousands who would do the same.

Try one of these feed readers if the build-in Firefox reader doesn't suit you.

  • Question about using Apple Mail with Verizon

Not sure if this is an Apple or Verizon question, but leaning toward the latter so here it is...
On my MacBook Pro, running OS 10.8.3, I have several accounts. Each has its own Verizon username e.g. [email protected], [email protected] etc. Everything had been working fine but last night I had an issue sending email from, say, the username1 account. I went to the username account to test it out and it worked fine - I sent an email to username1 in Mail and username1 had no problem receiving it. But username1 couldn't send email - it gave an error message about the outgoing server, asking me if I wanted to try another one.
Now the odd thing is that the outgoing server name was (and has always been) exactly the same for username1 and username. But when I selected outgoing.verizon.net:username1 instead of the usual one, it was able to send email. I'm not sure why that other server name was listed as an option, but glad that it was there.
So my question is why would two accounts on the same computer have to use two different Verizon outgoing mail servers in order to send email?
    Thanks.
P.S. I should mention that, based on input from this forum, I ignored Verizon's "urgent" email from back in March about changing mail settings.

There's input, and then there's input.
By this time you should be using only the recommended settings across all your devices and platforms.  As far as I can determine, all devices, operating systems, mail clients, etc., have been successfully configured using the new recommended settings.  There are indeed individuals who are still finding issues, but the general consensus among experienced users seems to be that the issues reported are related to individual settings and devices, and do not stem from the server side.
BTW I don't at all mean to suggest that a particular user is anything less than capable.  I'm just stating what I believe is the situation today.

I am soooooooooooo confused now.  Ok, if you are having problems with Yahoo Mail and Gmail but you do not use Apple's Mail you need to do the following:
1 - Post in Yahoo's Mail forums and/or contact their tech support.
2 - Post in Gmails forums and/or contact their tech support.
Neither of the above are Apple's products.

  • Apple-date-format for Mail Stationary

my date for my mail stationary is not updating as it used to since i have upgraded to Mavericks
this was my code before: (works only with Mountain Lion)
    <span class="AppleStationeryDynamicElement" contenteditable="true" apple-content-type="date" apple-date-format="%b %1d, %Y">xxxxx</span>
this is my code now: (works only with Mavericks)
    <span class="AppleStationeryDynamicElement" contenteditable="true" apple-content-type="date" apple-date-format="EEE, MMM d, ''yy"></span>
any one have idea what shuld i use for the date format that would work both Mountain Lion and Mavericks?
    Thanks!

    Steve,
I think that you may have the "wrong" choice in the Systems Preferences/International preference pane. If this is set to "United Kingdom" then Mail will generate iCal events with the correct date.
However, if (like me) you customise this in any way, OS X creates a "Custom" profile. This is no longer recognised by Mail as using UK date formats and the program then seems to default to choosing US dates. So, if you are willing to lose your customisation and switch back to the standard "United Kingdom" choices this should work.
It is just a shame that you can't have a UK date format, and some customisation of (for instance) the date/time display.

  • Date format in Apple Mail

    Ladies and Gentlemen:
Is there a way to use international date formats in Apple Mail.app with the AppleStationeryDynamicElement?
    Example: < span class="AppleStationeryDynamicElement" contenteditable="true" apple-content-type="date" *apple-date-format="%b %1d, %Y"*>xxxxx<\span >
In my case it always displays the English Format "October 22, 2010" instead of the German format although in the language settings everything seems O.K. .
    Thank you very much!
    Kind regards

    +initWithDateFormat:@"%b %1d %Y" allowNaturalLanguage:NO];+
    +initWithDateFormat:@"%1m/%1d/%Y" allowNaturalLanguage:NO]
    autorelease];+
As I said, I'm not that knowledgeable, but I can read - it seems to me all the examples given assume the English language (month first), so have you tried:
    %1d/%1m/%Y
I am asking because you said:
    +I have in my mail template the string "apple-content-type="date" apple-date-format= *"%b %1d, %Y"".*+
From what I just looked at, "b" or "m" is the month, so if that is what you have entered, it'll show "March 2, 2010"; however - at least in Germany - the date is displayed as 2. März 2010 (I know the Viennese have their own way of doing things, but..
The other thing that puzzled me is the fact that it says "allowNaturalLanguage: No" - again, I have no idea, but logic would dictate that yes, of course, you want the natural language which, in this case, would be German. Just a thought on this one.

  • Two questions about apple mail

hey everyone. i'm getting to learn a little more about apple mail these days; smoothing out Gmail IMAP synching and whatnaught. i've stumbled into the mail directory on my macbook and had some questions.
    1. the "mail downloads" folder (home/library/mail downloads). what is the significance of this folder? in the preferences, i have my default downloads saved to the main "downloads" folder. yet there is a random number of files in there; i don't think they constiute the totality of every message i've received that has a file to download, so what is the logic of those files? if i delete them will the downloads not be available from individual mail messages any longer?
    2. i see some older IMAP mailboxes for two accounts that i don't even have access to any more. they don't, however, show up on the mail app itself. is there some way to reintegrate these mailboxes (just for archival purposes, and the ability to see their messages) into the mail program?
    thanks so much!
    quin

    Aaron,
The Mail Downloads folder contents are redundant to what is kept with the messages. The most typical ways that content results in that folder are:
    1) quickly clicking the Save button on a message, rather than using a click-hold to then have the option to choose a target location of the Save;
    2) you open an attachment with another application. There Mail Downloads is only meant to be a temporary storage location. Attachments are kept as originally received with the message itself. Also, in the more recent version of Mail, it is redundantly kept in a folder within the INBOX.mbox folder named Attachments -- this is a behind the scenes behavior. It first appeared only for IMAP mailboxes, but more recently in Mail 4.x is also the case with a POP account. If unedited, then depending how you have your preference set up, attachments may be removed when Mail is quit, etc.;
    3) Mail in 10.5.x and 10.6.x seems to require the Mail Downloads folder to be created, rather than use the Downloads folder. The latter is mostly used as the location of items you click to load from a remote server, whether in a Browser or in Mail.
With respect to your old IMAP account folders or mailboxes, where have you found them? I would assume any old IMAP accounts have been deactivated in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced if in the Mail folder, but not showing in the Sidebar to Mail? It would problematic to activate an IMAP account if it can no longer contact the IMAP server. Any xxxx.imapmbox folder can be dragged from the Mail folder (after quitting Mail) to say the Desktop, renamed as xxxx.mbox folder, and then back in Mail imported to be an On My Mac mailbox for archival.
    More info, please.
