Apple's iPhone replacement policy? Need some answers plz.

I'm eventually going to trade in my black iPhone 4 for a replacement at the Apple Store (I am willing to wait right up before my warranty ends since its not a major issue for the time being).
Hypothetically speaking lets suppose the white iPhone 4 comes out, will i be able to trade my defective black unit for a white one. A comparable situation would be exchanging a defective black iPhone 3GS for a white one or visa versa.
Would policy permet such an exchange?

An exchange under warranty will be the same model and color.
How do you know for certain whatever the problem is requires an exchange under warranty? Whatever the problem is can't be resolved by any other means? I wouldn't wait until just before your warranty expires if your iPhone has a problem that cannot be resolved by any other means besides an exchange under warranty. You drop the iPhone causing any damage and no exchange under warranty. If any of the moisture indicators are tripped between now and then, no exchange under warranty.

Beware apple store iPhone replacement program:
We took my daughters broken iphone 4 into an apple store and was told that the damage was not covered under warrany but for only £120 we could get a replacement iphone 4
the problem being when they helped her set up the replacement Iphone 4 they installed os7 as the opperating system rendering the phone useless as it now runs slow, freezes & cannot use messaging at all etc
we went back to the store hoping they could HELP & were told that the iphone should not have these problems & to do a full restore; as it turns out the processing chip cant handle os7 which becomes Very apparent & now the store staff are suggesting that they will upgrade the phone to something newer & give us a £60 discout towards a new phone for something we paid them £120 48hr earlier.
Its not the Apple experience we have all come to love can anyone suggest how we might restore the phone to an earlier opperating system

A Skype Number is a different subscription from purchasing credit; you would have to check on the offerings available if credit is "bundled" with a Skype Number purchase or not. I do not believe it is. Credit is credit; there is no "discounted" rate. Check the Skype subscription website pages to see if purchasing a subscription could discount the cost of a Skype Number.

Caller ID is tricky; sometimes it works and sometimes the data does not get transmitted as the call is routed from Skype to one or more carriers before the call reaches its destination. Going to Apple Store for Replacement tomorrow Need Your Opinion!!

I been having issues with push notifications from the very beginning when i purchased this phone. i use twitter often and this NEVER happened on my other iphones so I'm getting replacements. Is there any way I can test it out if it works or not at the apple store or do i need to get my phone activated again? also would they take out the sim card for me since i dont know how and put it back inside the new phone or do they only remove it and do i need to have it get it popped back the sim card at the verizon place?? it would be very nice if i can test this out cus im tired of keep getting buggy iphones.

Make sure your iPod is backed up (connect it to your computer and sync it if you can), then take just the iPod Touch to the Apple Store. Bring money or a credit card.

Alzheimer's Disease, need some answers on gettin a new Macbook?

I am 57 years old, and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's some 9 months ago. Learning new things is out, trying to maintain what I do know is a struggle at best. I have a MacBook Pro, probably 4 years old. I want to purchase another MacBook Pro. My question is, I do not need to worry about transfering anything to my new computer, or do I. Everything I have on here, like iTunes, will be on the new one, once I log on..email, another example. Once I put in my email address, will the new computer just find it??? I dont or cant do alot of tech. things anymore and fear the new computer will ask me questions or want me to enter things I dont know anymore. It will automatically pick up my wireless network, right? Things like this worry me, and was just wondering...thanks for you answers in advance....

First, I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis at such an early age. You have to document everything and have someone you trust know all the details of all your settings and personal information. You have to do this because it will be a lifesaver later, not only for you but for those around you too. My Father was diagnosed with Alzheimer some 10 yrs ago and believe me when I tell you that failure to let go and supply information to family members cost him and everyone else a lot.
There are lots of knowledgeable folks in the Discussion forums that I'm sure will provide more answers to your questions, but here are mines.
Some answers to your doubts:
1) "I do not need to worry about transfering anything to my new computer, or do I"
- If you've had your old computer for 4 years most likely you have lots of data, applications, documents, pictures, music in it. So yes you have to transfer your things to your new computer. I recommend you buy the MacBook directly at the store and not online. That way you can ask for the One To One service where you can just drop off your old computer — Mac or PC — and they will transfer your files, install any new Apple software you’ve purchased, and put it all in the right places. The Apple Store Genius will be of tremendous help with your new purchase. So you don't have to worry of anything you've asked here.
2) "Everything I have on here, like iTunes, will be on the new one, once I log on..email, another example. Once I put in my email address, will the new computer just find it???"
- iTunes will not redownload your Music, you have to Migrate/Transfer that to your NEW computer. If you use an iPhone/iPad you can redownload your Apps but that is not the case with your music. According to an Apple statement: "When you buy a song, video, iPod Game, or album from the iTunes Store, you are entitled to download it only once."
As far as email: Depending on the type of accounts that you have will depend if you need to transfer from your old computer or not. MobileMe accounts may have email in the cloud. Hotmail/GMail and others alike always have your emails stored at their Servers and once you supply your user/password you should start getting your emails. Now if you have old emails that contain important account information you still want to make sure you get those transferred to your NEW computer. Remember that you may need them if you start forgetting things. Print those emails if you can before transferring them to your NEW computer.
3) "Fear the new computer will ask me questions or want me to enter things I dont know anymore?"
- If you decide to perform the Migration yourself, yes it will ask you things you might not remember. When you buy a NEW Mac it will ask if you want to use Migration Assistant to transfer your things from the OLD computer. The old computer needs to be on and connected to your wireless network, however, it is best if you connect them directly because the transfer time will be painfully long if you have lots of information in your old computer.
4) "It will automatically pick up my wireless network, right?"
- It will ask you to select from a list of detected wireless routers in your area, yours should be in that list. If your router is unprotected then it will not ask you for a password. If it is protected (and of course you always want to have your router password protected) it will ask you for that password.
I hope these answers help you or at least get you started in the right direction. Remember to document everything.

Apple Care iPhone Replacement Quality Question

For the people here who have gotten their iphones replaced thru apple care for whatever issue it may have been, did the replacement unit contain any defects (cosmetic, dead pixels, dust, "bad" screen) or was the replacement unit sent 100% defect free? I am asking because I am wondering whether the replacement phones that apple sends are troubleshooted and screened more extensively that the ones sold in stores. Although obviously the same phone, I could see that it would be against Apple's financial interest to send the customer a phone with some new defects only to have that unit returned again.

Not sure about apple care replacements. Since the iphone is still so new they may just send out new ones instead of refurbs because they don't have any yet. I got mine replaced at an apple store one time and they brought out a brand new one and I watched as the apple guy tore off the wrap and opened it for the first time. The guy also said that apple was collecting defective units or damaged ones to study.
What was your issue with sending it in?

I'm an Apple TV Noob! I need some direction!

*I know people have said the only way to keep things on your Apple TV but remove them from your computer is to delete the files but keep the links in itunes. Does anyone know if this might change one day with updates?* I can only find information about Movie Rentals when I search for answers. deleting files but keeping the links sounds like a big itunes mess.
Also *is there a way to stream the content on your ipod onto your Apple TV?* I back up my stuff and put what i want on my ipod and then store it all on disks elsewhere, so it'd be nice to listen to the music off my ipod or even watch those movies. so if anyone knows if thats possible or will be possible i'd appreciate that! I'm on a laptop so my storage is minimal, i have crazy amounts of images, music and video so its not an option to keep it all on my computer at all times.

Hi welcome to the Apple forums.
I will try to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge.
AppleTV syncs to a computer's iTunes library, you can however stream content from up to 5 (including the synced library) itunes libraries from other computers.
Since your storage is limited, you state you store files on discs elsewhere. Is this CD/DVD discs or Hard discs?
What you can do is connect an external hard drive to your laptop and store all your photo's, movies etc on your external drive. In iTunes>Preferences, choose 'Do not copy files (content) to your iTunes Folder'. This will allow files to show in your iTunes library without the being copied to your iTunes library folder on your laptop (the files you add to your iTunes library {but not copied to your iTunes Library Folder} will only be accessible when you connect your external hard drive).
Once you have the files on your external hard drive, you must add the files you want, to your iTunes library (in iTunes, File > Add To Library - a new window opens, select your external drive, then the folder where you stored the files you want to add to iTunes, then select the entire folder or the files you want added to, but not copied to, your iTunes library on your laptop).
If you have synced files to your AppleTV, which have been added to your iTunes library, but are not copied to your iTunes folder (files on your external hard drive), you must ensure your external hard drive is connected and switched on before opening iTunes (when your AppleTV is switched on), so that any content will not be removed from your AppleTV.
By using an external hard drive to store your photos, movies etc, this frees up space on your laptop hard drive and allows you to keep content on your AppleTV.
As for syncing your AppleTV to an iPod, this is not supported as an iPod, like AppleTV, syncs to one iTunes library.
As for your images being out of rotation, iPhoto remembers when you correct a rotation on an image then displays this on your computer screen, iPod and AppleTV do not have iPhoto installed to decode the rotate instruction. On your iPod Touch, if you rotate the iPod this switches the view from Portrait to Landscape or vice versa.
I photograph a lot, many of my pictures are portrait as opposed to landscape, the rotation of these images I always 'fix' prior to adding to iPhoto, so all images by default are 'the right way up'.
I can't really comment on AppleTV and how this displays images, as I am in the process of setting up my own AppleTV, primarily for viewing movies and have not transferred any images to it yet.
The speed of the syncing between AppleTV and your computer depends on a number of things including how the devices are connected. If they are both connected wirelessly through a wireless 'G' router, data will pass between them at a maximum of 54Mbps (54 mega bits per second not mega bytes per second). If they are connected wirelessly through a wireless 'N' router, data can be transferred at up to 400Mbps (this will obviously be faster than the 'G' router connection).
If however your laptop has a Giga ethernet port (as does the AppleTV) and they are connected (wired) to a Giga ethernet router or Giga ethernet switch (connected to your wireless router), the data transfer rate can be up to 1000Mbps (or 1Gbps = giga bits per second) this is obviously faster than a wireless 'N' connection, so syncing will be much quicker..
I'm sorry if this sounds a bit complicated, I have tried to keep it as simple as I can.

1) Ipod Classic connected with component cables to a plasma TV plays .m4v video that's more than acceptable viewing, will these same .m4v video files play more than acceptable viewing using Apple TV?
2) Are the video files(not DRM) that is the .m4v available to my other networked Macs wired or wirelesss as downloadable; ie the Apple TV functioning as a "server".
3) does Apple TV in fact function as an Airtunes device? So I can rid myself of two Expresses?
4) what would be the approximate time of streaming a 2 hrs movie to the Apple TV wirelessly. Using Apple Extreme N router to Apple TV?

1) a video that can be played with an iPod Classic will be displayed by the ATV in the same quality. I saw no difference on a brand new Pioneer 42in 720p Plasma.
2) ATV does not function as a server, you can only sync it with one Mac and you cannot just access the ATV hard drive. You can use a Mac to share media libraries.
3) yes (but why would it allow you to get rid of TWO AirTunes Express)
4) I dont understand the question. On an N network, it will take you less than 5 minutes to transfer a movie from ATV to a Mac or vice versa. The time to download a movie from the iTunes Store to ATV to watch it will depend more on your internet connection that your network. Even a G network is much faster than any available internet connection.

My used QS G4 came with 10.1 and now I need some answers...

What is the ***** cat name for 10.1? Sort of shows you the age of this machine albeit for me it has potential inexpensive expansion.
After trying this OS X I installed TIGER.
However in my haste I misspelled the name of my little house. What's a fast way to correct the spelling error without using terminal? Or, do I just do an archieval install?
The installer also zapped OS 9 because it said, oh I can't remember what it said.
I assume I can re-install 9 after OS X installation or do I have to install OS 9 first and then OS X TIGER ?
I have some fav midi/audio programmes that were never ported to OS X or those programmes are still my fav.
Also, can I install/use a web cam or iSight ?
Any recommendations for a web cam ? The iSight is horribly expensive.

Changing the user's shortname is a bit complicated. The easiest solution is to download the freeware utility ChangeShortName from www.macupdate.com. Do NOT simply rename the folder - this will not work.
OS 9 may be installed at any time regardless of whether OS X is already installed or not. You will need a bootable OS 9 installer CD with version 9.1 or higher. You can install OS 9 on the same volume with OS X or you can partition the hard drive and install OS 9 on one partition and OS X on the other. This particular arrangement makes it possible to switch between operating systems using OPTION booting.
You can use a web cam or iSight with that computer. I don't use either so I can't offer a recommendation. Regarding the quality of the recording I assume you are doing this from a turntable? If so you will require something called a pre-amp to get the signal up to 'line level'. In simple terms the signal from the turntable is to low and needs the pre-amp to get it to a signal compatible for the line input.
You should also check the line input on the audigy card with a different source such as with a stereo, walkman etc or if you CD ROM has a headphone out run this to the line input and check the connection.

Is it a paid account or a free account?
The free accounts can not be set up on the iPhone because the free Hotmail accounts do not user one of the two email server standards, POP3 or IMAP (it uses a proprietary HTTP protocol) which the iPhone requires.
You will need to upgrade to one of the paid hotmail accounts before you can get POP3 access for your email.
