Apple TV 2.0 - best for UK users?

Hi, I am new to this technology but converting from a PC to MAC - finally which is ace.
I have bought a new 26" LCD for the bedroom which is HD ready. Im looking at the Apple TV 40gb version, but from what I can tell - this only streams info from iTunes. Just got a couple of questions...
- Does anyone know when moview rentals will be available in the UK
- I use PQDVD to convert my DVD's onto my Ipod. Does this software also convert into Apple TV
- I am also thinking of buying the Eye TV addon for the mac - does this convert into Apple TV
Ive see a few discussions about quality and HD content - but just wondered if the technology is too early in the UK?

If you already have the know how to convert DVDs for iPod use I'm sure you will be able to find out how to do so for AppleTV. The iPod files should play but will probably be lower quality than AppleTv can achieve.
The 40GB allows streaming or syncing (mirroring iTunes content locally on AppleTV). For streaming the Mac/PC has to be on for AppleTV to see iTunes and to stream. It can be off to watch synced content but the amount is limited by the 40GB (around 32GB usable) or 160GB drive.
I've got 2 40GB machines as I'd be unlikely to be able to sync everything even with a 160GB machine. If you sync, the stuff has to reside in the iTunes library too, or the next time you sync it'll auto delete from AppleTV which is not a backup device.
Frankly, AppleTV 2.0 has taken AppleTV in a new marketing direction.
Previously it was a device that alowed you to watch movies/music etc from iTunes on your TV. That's what I wanted and bought it for and you can still do that with it. Unfortunately for me the new software make accessing iTunes store for purchases/rentals online the main 'raison d'etre' for the box, and relegates your own content in the menus - I wish all the store stuff was in it's own category.
AppleTV still does what it used to just that the menu are more cluttered, and I'm sure we'll see movie rentals in the UK but when is anyone's guess - the only thing coming late to the party shold mean will be that any rental issues/glitches will have been fully realised/worked out first on the other side of the pond.
The Elgato EyeTV device will not connect directly to AppleTV only the Mac, but the software will easily allow you to convert off-air recordings, send them to iTunes/AppleTv.

in my openion apple should unmask the id for those users whos phones are not in stolen mode,only ther phone r locked when they update or restore.millions of people around the globe facing similar problem including me while they didnt know any info about previous user.perhaps its sound great that a tuff and unbreakable lock invented by apple for theft reason but this floud takes away those people also who are innocent and uneducated too.well users of iphone are getting droper n droper day by day by this lock feature and they r making there way to andriod.

I have a 2008 imac with snow leopard. i installed update 10.9.3 not realizing it's best for Maverick's users. Now my Itunes 11.2.2 won't burn playlists to CD.   Anyone else with this problem? CAn I uninstall the 10.9.3 update?

If you have your old system backed up then erase the drive and restore your backup. If you don't have a backup then backup your entire Home folder. Erase the drive and install Snow Leopard after which you can restore your Home folder from the backup.
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
     1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
         with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
         After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
         a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
     2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
         button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
         After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
         size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
         partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
         and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
         (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
     3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
         with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
     4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
         Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
         username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
         Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
         install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
         Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Or you can:
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
     Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
     COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
     computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
     screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
     Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).

No phone provides true call blocking. At best, they provide call diversion. Essentially, the call is answered and disconnected automatically. If I recall, Apple is adding call diversion features in iOS 7.

Can we creat an Apple ID for multiple users?

I work for a company where we are rolling out iPads in big amounts. The problem is that they all need an Apple ID in the training they get about the iPad they receive because they have to install MobiControl on it.
It's no problem to let them create an Apple ID at home, but they have to fill in credit card numbers once they connect at work when they try to install apps. That's the problem... Not everyone want's or has credit cards...
Maybe it's possible to create an Apple ID for multiple users???

You can make apple ID's without a credit card, you just have to jump through a couple of hoops to do it since the default is that people will always give a credit card. The key to making an ID without a credit card is that you try to download a free app first, then follow the 'make an ID' prompt. That will get you the 'none' option for payment.

You can't merge Apple IDs. What you could do is set up your phone to use the same iCloud accout you are using on your Mac. To do this, go to Settings>iCloud and turn all synced data (Contacts, Calendars, etc.) to Off. When prompted, choose to keep the data on the phone. When everything is off, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account. Now add the iCloud account you set up on your Mac (with the same Apple ID) and turn syncing back on for Calendars, Contacts, etc. When prompted, you will probably want to choose merge, to merge the data on your phone with the existing data on this iCloud account.

I then set myself up as a new user on our computer and tried to sync. I now get the error that my iPad is synced to another library. How can I start over without erasing all my data on the iPad?

Go back to her login. Unless you deliberately erased apps, they should all be there, both yours and hers! Then, you need to set up each iPad separately. You will notice that they have separate names for that very purpose.
There is no problem with multiple Apple IDs on the same iTunes on the same computer except... Apps are permanently associated with the ID that was originally used to obtain them. If you choose to update an app from inside iTunes and you're logged into the "wrong" ID, you must log out and back in again.
On the bright side, you can configure either or both iPads to sync with apps and music and movies, etc. from either or both IDs. Further, if you choose to update the apps from the iPads themselves, there is no need to log out/in. The device handles that. All you need is the correct password. In my case, I use the same password for both IDs to make things easier.

Why is 1440 x 900 "Best" for the Retina Screen per Apple?

Okay, in the System Preferences folder you can set the new MBP-R screen to one of the following settings with the description Apple provides by going to the System Preferences folder, then choosing "Displays", then unselecting the default "Best for Retina display" button by choosing instead the, "scaled" button. When you do that, you get the following choices with warnings on four of the five choices (for a screen shot see the link below):
1024 x 640, Larger Text, "Using a scaled resolution may effect performance."
1280 x 800, "Using a scaled resolution may effect performance."
1440 x 900, Best (Retina)
1680 x 1050 "Using a scaled resolution may effect performance."
1920 x 1200. More space, "Using a scaled resolution may effect performance."
There is no option for native 2880 x 1800 as presumably the text would be so tiny.
My question is, why does Apple call the 1440 x 900, "Best (Retina)"? What is best about it, why do only the other four have the scaled resolution warning since they all five are scaled are they not? Peformance concerns aside, can't I have confidence that all resolutions will be crisp as all are scaled as none are actually native (2880 x 1880)?
Then, Anand Tech has an article on how Apple handles this scaling, and they say,
"Retina MBP ships in a pixel doubled configuration. You get the effective desktop resolution of the standard 15-inch MacBook Pro's 1440 x 900 panel, but with four physical pixels driving every single pixel represented on the screen. This configuration is the best looking, . . ."
And they note the other resolutions have the potential to suffer performance and picture quality loss compared to the "Best" setting in the middle. But they just say this quality drop "can" happen, not that it "will" happen.

Can someone explain why this middle setting is inherently "Best", is it because the native resolution is divisible by this setting (2880 divisible by 1440; and 1800 divisible by 900)? And why does Anand Tech say there might be a quality impact in the other four? When would quality be compromised, when wouldn't it?

Basically the native resolution of the retina display is 2880x1800.
so if you're using 1440x900 then everything is perfect (which is why apple recommends it). Every pixel can be mapped to 2 pixels of the retina display, and everything is sharp.
for other resolutions,
Every single (clear) pixel, gets blurred with it's neighbors, or displaced and doubled, changing the size and shape of the displayed images.
Imagine two grids. One is 2x2 (4 pixels total). The other is 3x3.
Now if you scale up the 2x2 to the 3x3, you'd think you'd be ok, because the 3x3 is bigger, but what do you do with the middle pixel? Which corner's color does it get?
if you choose any of the 4 original pixels, you distort the image, so the only choice is a blurred mix of all 4 colors. It's a mess.
This is what happens when apple tries to display a 1920x1200 resolution desktop on a 2880x1800 resolution screen.

My iCloud password is not recognized when I sign in. This password works for every other iTunes/Apple app as it should. My user name comes up when I open iCloud and I change it to my email address as my username then enter the password and it won't accept

Which portable apple product is best for music quality

My old 8 gig nano died, and I have a 3rd generation ipod touch that's a bit slow to respond. I want a faster Apple product to listen to music, specifically AIFF encoded files for meditation. I have a 10.6.8 Mac and Itunes 10 (Do not care for v11) and between the 4th and 5th generation iPod touch, Ipad Mini, or iPhone, which of those devices is best for playing 1 hour long AIFF files? Best way to set up a Mac laptop for multiple users with AD logins

I am setting up a MacBook Pro running 10.4.11 that will be used as a "loaner" notebook for meetings, etc. The computer will be used internally at our company, so users will be logged into our network. Active Directory is set up on this computer to allow all domain users to log in using their own user name and password; this approach helps meet our company's security standards (we want to avoid using one common login or account for all users).
While this approach seems to fit our needs, it causes problems when it comes to running applications. For instance, each new user is prompted to enter first-time usage information when launching an application (forcing them to contemplate registration information, various settings, etc.). I've given "everyone" read-write privileges to the HD > Library and the Applications folder, but this does not solve anything and may not be a good approach anyway.
I would welcome any advice on the best way to set up this computer for multiple users logging in via Active Directory. Thanks!

Where are you installing the third party applications? It sounds like they are being installed in the 'User 1' account, rather than the /Applications folder (admin or not, one user normally can not see into another user's folders). Repairing permissions only works for applications that have a file in /Library/Receipts, not on folders in general, so you would need to check the permissions for the folders in question.
