Apple TV and External HD Only

Hello All,
I have my movies stored on an external Hard Drive (network attached, and usb if need be) and iTunes on my Macbook points to the drive as far as my movies.
I would like to purchase an Apple TV to stream these movies to the television but I don't want to have to have my Macbook on in order to do so.  Is it possible for the Apple TV to see the external HD with all the movies without having to have Itunes on my Macbook started up?
Thanks for the insight!

Apple TV has to have a way to interface with the external drive and that interface is iTunes. All my movies are on an external drive connected to my Mac and iTunes has to be open to stream the content. The only difference I can tell from your post is my external is not wireless but as stated the Apple TV needs a way to connect to the drive. Hope that helps.

You don't have to use the same ID for iCloud as you do for purchasing.  You can just set up iCloud using your other ID.
If your have already have another account, you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, choose Keep on My iDevice when prompted, set up your new account with the other ID, turn on your iCloud data syncing and when prompted, choose Merge to upload your data to the new account.

I assume this is using an app.
Check the developer's website as many only support Audio Airplay.

  • ICloud photos are available on Apple TV and iPhone but only some are showing up on my PC.

My iCloud photos are available on Apple TV and iPhone but only habout half of them show up on my laptop (windoes 8). On my old laptop I could view all photos and download etc. I tried to trouble shoot using advice here but not I can't see any of them on my laptop.

I have the same problem. One-time events are showing up everywhere, but repeating events (the majority of my schedule!) are not showing up on icloud (they do show up on my computer at home and on my iphone...)

  • Lync VDI Plugin and External LyncServer only

    Hello Specialists,
i have a small question, how the VDI PlugIn works if you have only a External Lync Server. ??We dont have an internal envirement in our Company, but on the regkey you have to give internal and external.
    Envirement:
ThinClient: Windows 7 SP1, Lync VDI Plugin 32 bit.
Citrix: Windows 2008 R2, Lync and Office 32bit.
    Only External Lync Server.

  • Time Capsule, Apple TV, and External Hard Drive

I currently have a Macbook with OS X 10.4, and an external 250GB hard drive. I want to purchase Leopard OS X, Time Capsule, and Apple TV. My goal is to copy my music, movies, and pictures onto the Apple TV for viewing on my tv. I also would like to store my music, pictures, and documents on the Time Capsule for the default location, due to storage space. I have more files than I have room on my Macbook. I don't want to hook up the external hard drive every time I use my computer. I would like to access it all wirelessly. My question is will this work ok and can I read my files off of the Time Capsule without delay to where the music, movies, and photos won't play or view without a glitch. Also am I purchasing something I don't need. The main goal is to store the files on an external device in order to gain space on my Macbook and not have to hook up the external hard drive every time. Thanks for the help!!

Hello, seems like you wanted to do pretty much what i wanted to do. that is free up space on lap top. But still have instant access to your itunes stuff. I found a solution that works for me.
I have a portable WD hdd attached to my time capsule via usb, i then access both through the capsules wireless connection, using the TC for time machine.
The Apple tv then accesses my itunes lib through my MBP via TC's wireless. I did however connect the WD Hdd directly to my MBP for the initial transfer to the apple tv, but itunes seems to find the lib as long as its there, doesnt matter if its connected to MBPs usb or the TCs usb. Sometimes it might revert to the default location, but i've found that if you click on a song it still plays, then if you close then reopen itunes every thing goes back to your external hdd...
Which means if you go away or want your itunes lib on the move you just need a little WD hdd.
I'm not totally sure if its worked yet but i connected my WD hdd to my MBP vie usb and told the TC to back up that too by going to options in TM preferences, seems to have worked, not sure if it would work while connected to the TC usb connection, doesnt seem to.
NB:Before you do this do a back up of everything in you Itunes Lib on your TC incase you screw up.
(For easy transfer of your itunes lib go to preferences on itunes and create a folder called iTunes Music on your Hdd then close preferences and allow itunes to do its thing, then in itunes go to
file - library - consolidate library, itunes. Itunes then makes a copy of all music on your new hdd. I then deleted the tunes off my MBP)
Just make sure you open your finder and click on the TC to wake the drive before you open Itunes other wise you'll have to go in to preferences and keep altering the location for your itunes folder. which can take i tunes a while.
This method seems to cope with video and music just fine.
Well hope that wasn't too confusing, as i confuse myself at times.
    Good Luck.........

  • I have an Apple TV and I can only see Home Sharing and Settings, NO YouTube

I ran an update on my Apple TV last month, when it restarted I could not see anything apart from Home Sharing and Settings. I can see the option of YouTube and have racked my brain but can’t get to YouTube from my Apple TV.
If I search for a video on my iPhone then I can play it Via the Apple TV but I can’t directly access YouTube. Please help me out if anyone has any clue how to fix this.

    Did it - didn't work.
I can access the internet from every other apple device that is connecting to the same router as the Apple TV.
Please don't tell me it's a "network" issue. The AppleTV is the only one that can't seem to "see" the internet.

  • Apple tv2 and external hard drive

I have old videobands that I'm going to put it on an external hard drive, but how can I watch it then on the apple tv? Do I have to buy an time capsule to let ithe external haddrive synchronisize with the apple tv2. I want also to see my macbook air screen on my tv (wireless).
And my last question is how to work with ipad safari on a flashplayer site?

    In reverse order...
Best way to see Flash on your iPad is to download the iSwifter browser.
You, as of yet, can not stream your Mac to your ATV2. You can send audio and video to it if it's in iTunes or QuickTime 10.
No to the external drive, TimeCapsule options. Your external drive with the videos would need to be part of your iTunes library.

  • My Itunes will load on Apple TV and play, but only plays one song at a time.  It will not shuffle or continuously play an album.  All of the songs display, but will only play one at a time...home sharing is on.  Any suggestions?

My Itunes info will load onto Apple TV, but will only play one song at a time of my music.  Home sharing is on, airplay is on, router info has been reset.  What am I missing?  It has never done this before....

  • Apple TV and External HDD

I'm running out of space for the movies on my internal HDD. I purchased an 40G ATV (the 160 was out of stock) and I intended to store the movies there. Since 40G is too low, I wanted to connect an external HDD to the ATV. Is this possible and if yes, how do I do it? Furthermore, what happen if the sheer size of the movies purchased on ATV is exceeding the internal HDD capacity? How does this affect the sync process?
    Appreciate directions

Hi DaVBMan, that would imply the question why does the ATV is offered with 160G if you can not use it to store.
This is why I bought the 40GB. The drive for the AppleTV can store local copies of stuff from your library. Thus when your computer is off or not available, the AppleTV can still have stuff on it. Some like to take their ATV with them on trips as well.
The drive is also needed for those that buy the ATV without the intention of ever hooking it to an iTunes library (sync/stream). Imagine a person with no computer or just not computer literate and you buy an ATV for them as a gift. They can rent and buy movies/music/etc from the ATV directly and just keep what they buy on the ATV, though they will never get a backup and in time would fill the drive and have to decide what to let get deleted to get new stuff. This is where the 160GB is handy. For those people like that, I would assume most would just rent movies (which is why everybody is coming out with movie rental boxes now).
For me, the 40GB was just fine. I can sync over all my wifes music and then have the sync settings for 5 most recent movies and 10 most recent TV shows. Thus if my computer is off (or iTunes closed) the ATV has ALL her music to play and has the most recent movies and TV shows (which if they are new odds are the ones I want to watch). If I leave iTunes open (which I do) then the ATV will show the combination of what is synced and what is available that is not synced but can stream (hence I see my full library...which is on an external 1TB drive connected to my computer).
I saw no need for myself to pay for the larger drive for the ATV since I understood how it works and that my needs didn't call for the larger drive.

  • Apple logo and spinning circle only on startup - never loads

I foolishy changed permissions on the whole volume to try and give a new user Read&Write permissions to the whole volume and set it to propagate the new permissions down through the whole volume, and now when I power on my MacBook Pro, I see the Apple logo, a spinning wheel for a few minutes, and then it reboots itself, never loading the OS. I searched these forums and the internet for hours last night. It seems pretty clear from my research that I caused problems by changing permissions.
I can't boot into Safe mode.
I can boot into single user mode.
I can book to the install CD and run Disk Utilities.
I've tried Repair Disk and Repair Permissions from the Disk Utility several times. Verify Disk never finds any problems, but no matter how many times I run the Repair Permissions option, I still get a very long list of "ACL found but not expected on <filenames>. . .]"
I also found countless sites with instructions on running commands in single user mode:
    mount -uw /
and then tried all of these suggestions-
    chmod 775 /
    chmod 1775 /
    chmod o+r /
and a host of other variations
I do have BootCamp with Vista installed, and can boot into Vista with no problems, so it would seem the HDD itself is physically fine.
    Any suggestions?
Snow Leopard is set to arrive before 3 pm today by FedEx. Would running the Snow Leopard upgrade from the boot CD correct any remaining permission issues when it over-writes what's currently there? If you're not sure, any ideas on how to proceed with fixing the current 10.5.8 installation?
Thanks in advance. I'm at my wits end, and very groggy from fighting this all night

  • Apple permissions and external Seagate drive

Need to know how to reset permissions--Using Mac 10.9.4.
We bought a Seagate Backup Plus Mac for external drive. I was able to partition the drive, as I wanted some that was Time Machine compatible and other part to be able to back up manually. The Time Machine part works fine. Apparently I can't back up to the other side apparently because of some problem with 10.9.4 permissions.
Can someone please tell me how I can reset the permissions?
    Thanks.
    js

Thanks, Erin, but it didn't work.
I ran verify disk, then Repair disk. Repair disk permissions is not an option (it is grayed out), though the message at the top says "If you have a permissions problem...click Repair Disk Permissions.
I did check the Get info and do have read/write privileges.
I very much appreciate your clear instructions and effort.

  • My iphone 4s is not connecting to wifi because the wifi chip is burned so i went to the apple store and they could only replace the iphone for $199 any cheaper ways?

is there any cheap way to fix a burnt wifi chip on iphone 4s ios 7.1?

No. How do you know the wifi chip is burned? If you or someone other than
Apple opened the iPhone to inspect the chips, the warranty was voided. Be
glad Apple is offering you a chance at an Out of Warranty replacement as
that was lost when the iPhone was opened.
Apple does not repair iPhones, but replaces them with another unit.

  • Delivery report shows status of Pending for external address. Email sent to both internal and external addresses.

We have an Exchange 2013 on-premise server and seem to have an issue with emails sent to internal and external users at the same time.
The issue came to light because someone sent an email to 44 recipients, of which one was internal. None of the external recipients received the email. I checked the delivery report in the EAC and found the internal email marked as 'Delivered' and all of
the external ones marked as 'Pending'. I checked the queues and there were none. I did some testing and sent an email to just one of the external addresses on the list, it arrived. I tried sending the email again to all of the recipients, the external ones
all showed 'Pending'. I tried it again, but this time excluded the internal email address and all of the 43 external emails were immediately delivered.
So it seems that the issue only arises when we are sending to both internal and external addresses.
I then tried a test email to one internal address and one external address. The Delivery report says that the internal address was delivered immediately, while the external address is 'Pending' and gives more information saying: 'Message delivery is taking
longer than expected. There may be system delays. For more information, contact your helpdesk.'. To add further mystery to this, the email was actually delivered.
    So, I have two concerns:
First is seems that some emails sent both internally and externally are only arriving internally. This is a huge problem because I don't know how many have been affected. There may be many lost emails we don't know about.
Second, it looks like I can't trust the delivery report. It says pending for some emails which didn't arrive, but it also says pending for some which did arrive. That is no good at all.
For info the server is running Windows Server 2012. I have run a Microsoft Update to check if there are any to apply and the only Exchange one is a spam filter update, which I doubt has any bearing but I will apply when I get chance.

    Hi Neil,
According to the description, I find a related KB on Exchange 2010:
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2694474?wa=wsignin1.0
It has the similar situation as yours.
This issue occurs because a function in a message tracking component tries to obtain the information for the recipient instead of the external recipient.
Please try to upgrade to the latest Exchange update to check whether this issue can be solved.
Also please check whether Throttling has been set.
Please run "Get-TransportService | fl" to check the MaxOutboundConnections parameter value.

What can I do?

There is no way to consolidate iTunes accounts.
Setting up an iPhone has never required creation of a new Apple ID.
You've apparently purchased content with both Apple ID's.  Sign into the device with the correct Apple ID and sync the content.
