Apple TV and No HDMI

So we're planning on getting an Apple TV or Roku. I've always liked Apple's products, and would prefer that. One thing though.
Our tv has no HDMI port (Sony Wide Screen KP-46WT500 Rear Projection TV). I've read we can still hook it up with an adapter, but a second issue arose. How would we hook up the audio? I know the Apple TV has an optical input. So how should we go about this?

Using an appropriate adapter or converter, you can connect your Apple TV to any number of display and audio devices imaginable.
Shop for an appropriate "HDMI to DVI with audio" converter with audio outputs appropriate for your TV. Here is one for example:
http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-DVI2HDMIA-Video-Converter-Audio/dp/B005G3VQ5E/
Monoprice is also a good source for such items. (Edit: this one looks perfect and it's half as expensive: DVI & R/L Stereo Audio to HDMI® Converter)
Do not use the Sony's component or composite video inputs. You will want to pass the digital video signals without alteration. HDMI to DVI is the only way to do that with your TV.

First, make sure your TV is tuned to display the correct input signal. Most TVs have several inputs (multiple HDMIs, cable connections, RCA etc) so double-check that you're using the correct one - HDMI1, HDMI2 or whatever is written next to the port.
I assume that you have a mini-Displayport to HDMI adaptor? If you open displays preferences, first tick the box that says "show display preferences in menu bar" then locate the menu and click Detect Displays. See if that helps.

  • My experience with Apple TV and HDMI/HDCP issues

I am convinced that it is the software update to 4.2.2 from 4.2.1 that is causing this issue.  All forms of applications only worked once for me and then it reverted back to HDCP issues.  I read several postings everywhere including plenty at Apple's forum and AVS where people were very frustrated with this HDCP issues.  Anyways, here is what I did before taking it back to Apple store....I bought AUVIO high speed cables from Radio Shack which is rated very high and tried that and I still got HDCP issues when using NetFlix or AirPlay from iPad.  Youtube from Apple TV always worked well without HDCP complaints.
I packed everything back and took it to Apple Store (you can return without re-stocking fee up to 14 days from the day of purchase).  After 14 days, you cannot even return it and you can ONLY fix it.  I waited for a Technician.  They heard my complaints but didn't refute any of it (possibly because they have had numerous complaints on this product).  It took 5 minutes inside for them to test and see similar issues with the box that I had.  So, they have swapped it for a new box.  Before I left the store, I checked the settings including software version and Audio/Video settings in the Apple TV that is connected at the store.  I found three main differences none of which the Apple customer service staff agreed could be the reason for my problems (surprise!!)
    1.  The software update from the shelf and the one they were using was NOT updated to 4.2.2 (it was still running 4.2.1)
    2.  Because of the software update, the Audio/Video setting for HDMI had the options to toggle between Auto, RGBy, RGBhi & RGBlo bandwidth.  I believe this was in place to make the HDMI interface output as component with higher or lower bandwidth but the newer update will ONLY give you the Auto option (!!!)
    3.  They had this directly Ethernet wired and not through Wireless network and were recieving the all the full bar strength signals.  On the box that I returned, eventhough I have 18 Mbps speed at the house (any given time of the day), the Network speed test was taking a long time.  Moreover, after the Apple TV network test, it doesn't spit out the outcome of the tests (a BIG bummer and useless for testing).
Anyways, I took the new box and hooked it up directly to my SONY BRAVIA XBR3 TV to one of the HDMI ports, disabled the feature to send or recieve data to Apple directly and did NOT update the software.  It worked fine and have tested all of the options.  From what I have read so far (I have only spent 30 hours of my weekend on this when Apple product hookups are supposed to take 5 minutes ONLY), there is NO guarantee that it will work continuously as people have had things work on them for 6 months and then suddenly have the HDCP issues.
Will wait to see....if it continues to work....

I figured it out. Had to go to general settings on the main screen and restart. Synch of audio is much better.

  • I just bought apple tv and would like to set it up for my family for christmas.  i have a samsung tv and yamaha receiver.  where do i plug in  hdmi?  i assume into receiver but not sure.  also, plug is on back of receiver so much get behind all equipment

i just bought apple tv and would like to set it up so it works right away.  i have samsung tv and yamaha receiver.  do i plug hdmi into receiver?  i assume plugs are in back of machined so i have to get behind all electronic equipment?  does that make sense?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your receiver is connected to your TV by HDMI and has a spare HDMI input port, then yes plug the HDMI cable from the Apple TV into your receiver.
If that's not possible the HDMI lead from the Apple TV can go straight to the TV and you can connect the receiver to the Apple TV with an optical audio cable.

  • Apple TV worked until today. Message says unsupported signal check your output device.  I have checked hdmi cable with another device and it's fine. Put on a different tv and same message.  Went out yesterday and bought a new Apple TV and same problem.

    Which TV do you have.
You may wish to try the following:
Press and hold the menu and the up button simultaneously on the remote for six seconds, the Apple TV should then begin to cycle through the various resolutions available to it at 20 second intervals.. If you see a picture appear up on your screen, use the remote to scroll down to the OK option and select it.

  • HT1551 the apple tv seems to be on and is plugged into the tv with an hdmi cable and the hdmi port is selected, but the tv is flashing that this is "not supported mode" even though this samsung tv has two hdmi ports

I have my new apple tv connected to my tv with an hdmi cable, but nothing appearing on the screen.  any suggestions?

I just fixed mine by following the steps in this article http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/archives/aug14/080814.html
Basically, turn off file sharing, remote sharing etc... in apple preferences and it worked.  Apple support didnt help and told me to take back the device !  I initially restarted, rebooted, reset apple tv,  updated, unplugged everything including the router- unchecking the sharing boxes in preferences is the only thing that worked.

  • HT200197 the colour on my apple tv is not right. itsshowing every thing in a grean and purple colour. i have restarted apple tv and changed the hdmi cable but the problem stiil persists

the colour on my apple tv is not right. the only colours are black white green and purple. i have retatrted my apple tv and chenged the HDMI cable all with no success.
any suggestions of what else i can try?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)
If this doesn't help, try it on another TV, if the problem persists you possibly have a failed unit.

  • New Apple TV and OLD HD ready Sony w/o HDMI

I have an old HD ready Sony TV... no HDMI connection. However, I also have a DISH satellite receiver that provides the HD tuner and does have an HDMI connection.
Can I plug the HDMI cable from my DISH receiver to Apple TV box and make all this work? I'd hate to order the Apple TV and not be able to connect it... don't want to buy a new TV quite yet.
    Thanks

My apple TV is connected to a DTV with an HDMI cable and to my Yamaha receiver via optic cable. We rented a movie on Apple TV and.found that the movie played, but we only got audio for music tracks. Voice tracks were silent using both TV and receiver.  This only occurred on the rented video and on recorded shows on my cable DVR. previews and other content on Apple TV are fine. Any ideas??

Previews and trailers do not contain 5.1 audio.
If you have recently moved your setup, you may have inadvertently changed some of the settings on your receiver. It certainly sounds as though it is unable to play the 5.1 audio from the Apple TV.

  • My TV has one Hdmi output. Can I use a splitter to connect apple tv and my direct tv DVR

Can I use an hdmi splitter to connect apple tv and my direct tv DVR? If yes, Any suggestions on a good splitter that doesn't cost too much ($40 at most).

I would get an HDMI switcher and plug in the ATV directly
I just posted this as an example, not sure of your location.

  • My Apple Mini Display Port/HDMI adapter is not working after upgrading to Maverick?

I am using my 13" Macbook Pro Purchased July 2013 on my 42" Samsung TV.  I route through a HDMI adapter (purchased from Apple) to do my presentations. As a note my setup has been working great for the last year. Immediately following the upgrade to Maverick my Samsung displays "No Signal" and changes state "Check Signal Cable" when the cable is disconnected.  Obviously there is some type of signal but it is not recognized.  I tried working with Apple support and they said that the adapter I was using must not be an Apple product.  I investigated fully thinking I may have possibly bought the wrong item, after much research I have exactly the same thing sold on the Apple store online and I even went to 3 Apple stores locally to see if there was possibly another adapter that I should have purchased, but it was exactly the same thing I purchased originally.  Help me fix the problem or please provide details on how to go back in operating systems to prior to Maverick (and not lose any of my data), this upgrade was a huge mistake way to many problems and not the quality that I am used to from Apple.

Had a similar problem, but the answer is not a good one.
You are going to have to wait until Apple fix this as some 3rd party monitors are not supported by this update.
    So you can:
    Go back to 10.6.7
    Wait for Lion
    or
Use Onxy to clear up your computer and it may link to it again.
I deleted some preference files, which when they rebuilt themselves after a restart did the trick.
It worked for me, let me know how you get on?

  • Apple remote and built-in trackpad stop responding

I have a Macbook Pro - late 2011 - and have upgraded to Mountain Lion the day it was released. I bought a brand new Apple remote and paired it with my MBP. Today, as usual, I used an HDMI cable to connect my MBP to a LED TV and started giving a lecture based on a Keynote presentation I created full of videos snippets and the like that I sometimes pause using the remote. All of a sudden the remote - which had been previously paired with my computer - stopped responding. I immediately switched to the arrow keys on the keyboard and finished the lecture. I also noticed that the built-in trackpad had stopped responding to multiple gestures.
Has anyone been experiencing these problems? And is there a solution? I have searched high and low, but to no avail.
    TIA

    Found a solution!!!
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Now eveything is working as expected!

Yeah, I'm having the same exact problem - It seems that the thunderbolt minidisplay port is only able to output the analog VGA signal, not the digital signal to support DVI and HDMI. This is a bug that came up after installing 10.7.1. I bought my macbook air with 10.7 on it, upgraded it to 10.7.1 as soon as I got it, so I have never been able to use hdmi or dvi with my macbook air. This is an extremely frustrating problem for me, I used HDMI on a daily basis with my PC. I have spent many hours at the genius bar running diagnostic tests so Apple can get as much information as possible to create a fix for this problem. I have been emailing tech support for 3 or so weeks now, they keep saying that they are working on a fix and it should be out soon, but 10.7.2 has come and gone and I still have no HDMI functionality with my MacBook Air!

If this is an iPad 1, it won't mirror, but it will still output video from the 30 Pin dock connector.
If your new TV has a conventional VGA in and stereo inputs you can try this connector.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC748ZM/A/apple-composite-av-cable?fnode=3a
I used to stream video from both Netflix and YouTube and from my Mac using iTunes sharing through my iPad then with this connector plug into my iPad and TV.
It won't be high resolution, but it will get you picture from iPad to TV.
    Good Luck.
