Apple TV dropping home sharing connection

Previous setuo with my Mac mini and Apple TV 3rd gen was fine, wired network connection.
New setup with MB Pro is wireless connection, ATV keeps dropping Home Sharing. Both on same network.
iTunes is up to date and so is ATV. I have to log out of iTunes Home Sharing, log in and then sometimes
have to restart ATV. Not sure what is going on. I have MBP set not to go to sleep and to wake on wifi.
Very frustrating.

  • Why Apple Tv 2 drop Home Sharing connection after few minutes?

I just installed an Apple TV 2. Internet connection applications as Apple Store, Youtbe, etc work very well but it drops Library`s communication just after a few minutes. I`m running files like music that are in the library in a PC with Windows Vista.
I`ve been reading other discussions and have done every thing that was suggested as:
    - setting Static IP address
    - have set Firewall with the ports are supposed to open
    - have set Port Forwarding on the router (a Linksys WRT54GS)
    - have updated Network Card driver
    - have updated router firmware
    - turned off sleepling mode and screen saver
    - restored Apple TV 2
    - reset router
    - installed last Itunes version
All that and possibily other things that I do not remember right now but still looseingconnection to the Library after a few minutes. I have realized first time I put a slide show of pictures with music background and the music always stops after the second music. After that you just see the message that you need to turn on the Library related to my Apple ID.
Today I did a test with a home sharing with another computer I have that runs Windows 7 and guess what: the Home Sharing worked fine!
So, my conclusion is that there is some flaw on Home Sharing when running Itunes in Windows Vista or specificly with this computer running the Windows Vista.
I have done a research and have not found anything else. So, could anyone have a hint of what is going on?
    Thanks,
    Ricardo

Yesterday were released the IOS 5.1 and the Itunes 10.6. I thought that updating the IOS on the Apple TV 2 and the Itunes on PC, my problems would go away. I did that but for my surprise it has NOT.
Then I had a recall that I have read somewhere a while ago about issues with the AVAST Anti-Virus and Home Sharing, that can generate connectivity issues,
In one of my first temptatives to resolve this issue I have stopped the AVAST and I still had the problem, so I left this trail of solution. But since nothing was working I decided to uninstall it. I was a little skeptical about it but gave a shoot.
To my surprise, when I uninstalled it, booted the computer and did the Home Sharing, the problem was FIXED!
That made total sense because the other computer that runs Windows 7 and I have tested before, worked fine, it runs AVIRA as Anit-Virus software.
So my conclusion is that, on my case, the AVAST caused the issue and to stop its service was not enough to diagnose the issue. I had to uninstall it, believe or not. And that the issue has nothing to do with Windows Vista OS but with AVAST.
After that, I uninstall AVIRA as Anti Virus software and, since that, the Library and Home Sharing (24 h ago) is working perfectly and I think that will stay.

  • Apple tv 2 dropping home sharing connection

I have physically connected my apple tv 2nd generation to the same router that my mac and airport extreme are on even after updating.  While watching music videos on apple tv I loose my connection and tells me to turn on home sharing.  all ports 3689 5353 and 123 are allowed.  I can't figure out why the connection is dropping.  Any idea's?

Afe people have reported this problem. I don't recall seeing a solution. However, restart all of your devices and login and out of homesharing on the ATV and computer.
Also submit a bug report to Apple via the Apple tv feedback page. You can find it simply by googling Apple TV feedback

  • Apple TV Loses Home Sharing Connects Repeatedly

Looking for help here. My AppleTV routinely loose connectivity to my Mac Mini server and display the following message "To access your iTunes library on Apple TV, turn on Home Sharing in iTunes on your computer using <my Apple ID>". Usually rebooting the AppleTV will get home sharing working again.
Here is my below setup which worked without problems for about 1.5 years until late last fall. All devices are hard wired at GE speed. The Mac Mini is plugged into an Airport Extreme 7.7.3.
Mac Mini Server running iTunes 11.4, OSX 10.9.5
Apple TV 3rd Gen OS (7.0.2) I have three of these.
Very reluctant to move to Yosemite as I have heard about even more problems with AppleTV. My thoughts are that the Apples crappy bonjour protocol stack times out and loses connectivity between the AppleTV and the server. I have validated that while the AppleTV says it cannot find the home server I can still ping the AppleTV from my macmini.
    Thoughts, help?

I have the same problem, running iTunes from a MacBook pro with Yosemite. Also started late last year, after many years without a problem - now I pretty much have to restart the Apple TV each time I want to watch local content. Anyone else, any ideas?

  • Apple TV 3 home sharing connection issue.

Every time I turn my Apple TV on it is unable to connect to the iTunes library on my computer. My computer is on the same wireless network with iTunes open. The only way I can get it to reconnect is to turn off home sharing on the Apple TV and then turn it back on again. It is then able to reconnect.
I am running the latest software version on the ATV.

For me, it looks more and more a problem with my iMac waking up from sleep and not so much a problem with the Apple TV.
With Snow Leopard wireless wake on lan was working. With Mountain Lion, this is not working anymore. I tried several things (restart Airport Extreme, SMC en PRAM reset, configuring WiFi connection again, ...) but I can't get wireless wake on lan to work. And because my iMac won't wake up from sleep, the Apple TV can't reach the iTunes library.
I have the same problem when I start the Remote app on my iPhone: because the iMac is sleeping, it can't reach the iTunes library. When I go upstairs and wake my iMac, Remote can access the library.

  • TS2972 Apple TV drops home sharing

I have follwed all the instructions on how to fix the Home Sharing issue.  NOthing works.  I cant hold it for more than 30 minutes

    Welcome to the Apple community.
The first thing to check would be that both devices are on the same network, after checking this, ensure that any firewall or security software installed on your computer is not blocking access for iTunes.

  • Apple TV dropping home sharing with Win 7 Pro

Judging by the amount of problems people are having with this I'm not really expecting a resolution but I thought I'd give it a shot. I bought an Apple TV last week. Been wanting one now for a while.. I must say, I'm really disappointed with my decision on buying one now. Being a Apple user for a while now (MBP, IPhone, iPods) I had hoped that this product would be much better. I've been messing around since I bought it just to get home sharing working. My main PC, being a Windows 7 pro machine with all my media on it is hard wired to my router. With iTunes open and home sharing on, the Apple TV will not see any of my music or video. Following some of the suggestion I've been reading here I've tried everything from uninstalling iTunes, Bonjour, deauthorizing the machine and authorizing. Opening up the relevent ports on my router and too many other options I can't remember. What I found out is then when I reboot my router, home sharing comes on, lasts for maybe 15 - 20 mins then I cannot access anything from that main PC again until I reboot the router again. All this time, when I cannot access my media, if I turn on my MBP and start home sharing on this machine it works everytime. Both my MBP and Apple TV or wireless and the main PC is wired. I'm guessing that maybe there's something that needs to be changed on my router but I've tried most things suggested with no results. Only rebooting it will get it working again for another 15-20 mins. And I am using the latest version of iTunes on both my MBP and Windows PC. I even tried disabling the firewall on the PC and it still doesn't fix the issue. I'm hoping someone here can shed some light on this very frustrating issue. At this point I'm ready to bring the Apple TV back and buy something different.

  • Apple TV - iTunes Home Sharing - Mac mini - Not Working!!!

Hi everyone, I am in urgent need of help here!
I use the latest Mac mini to hold my iTunes Library to stream it over to my Apple TV with Home Sharing; however, there is a problem - it doesn't work anymore!
If I use my iMac or MacBook Pro, the Home Sharing works great to the Apple TV, without a single problem. For the past week and a half now though, my Mac mini just doesn't want to stream anything over, despite still appearing under the "Computers" column on the home screen of the Apple TV interface.
When I select my Mac mini, I get this seemingly endless loading screen:
    http://goo.gl/s0Qg1
When that loading screen does end though, I get this:
    http://goo.gl/xj3eY
It says "Could not connect to the Mac mini Library - Make sure your computer has iTunes open, and that it's on the same network as Apple TV."
I always verify that my iTunes is open on the Mac mini and that both the Mac mini and Apple TV are on the same network, and still nothing works.
Is there just some kind of issue with streaming the iTunes Library to the Apple TV via Home Sharing that I'm missing? There shouldn't be, but it's a very consistant problem that has come and gone away at random times, but now it seems to be a permanent and upsetting problem.
If anyone can help me on this matter, please send your helpful words because I would like to fix this problem and not deem my Mac mini as a waste of money. I actually bought the Mac mini for the purpose of streaming my iTunes Library, rather than to bog down my iMac with lag and memory being chewed up, because I need it being fast for my work.
    Thank you!

I've got the same problem. Bought a second Apple TV2 a couple of weeks ago and set it up to work with both my iMac and MBP - no problems. Both Apple TV's worked perfectly from both computers until... after a long night at work, the newest one decided to display a message telling me an update was available. Yes, you guessed it! I updated!
Now, although this new Apple Tv displays the libraries from both machines, I get the messages in the original post when I try to access my iMac account - no problem though with my MBP account. Both machines have the up-to-date versions of iTunes. Thank goodness I did not update the older Apple TV2 box!
I echo the sentiments of all the other posts - it is about time Apple pulled their finger out and sorted this mess.
I wonder how many other people have the same problem?

  • If I use my husbands apple id for home sharing can i still use my own for downloading apps?

If I use my husband apple id for home sharing, can I also use my own to purchase apps and music?

Sorry, let me clarify. I have two Apple IDs A and B:
A: Used for iCloud. All my calendar, mail, contacts, and other iCloud features are here. This is the ID I use as "the" iCloud on my iOS devices and OS X machines.
B: Used only for purchases, on all my devices and machines. This is what I used to log into iTunes, or to buy apps for iOS or OS X.
The issue is that the only way (currently) to set up Family Sharing is to invite from an iCloud ID (A, in my case) on an iOS 8 device. That's not the ID (B) I use for purchases. The question is whether there's a way to share those purchases given that I'm configured on all my devices with A for iCloud. (Clearly if I somehow send invitations from B, I can share purchases; but that's not the question.)
It sounds like the answer to that question is 'No'.
If that's the case, how do I invite from B? Do I have to configure an iOS device with B as the iCloud ID? My problem isn't that I want to ("willy nilly") avoid inviting form B; it's that there seems to be no way (certainly no convenient way) to do that.

  • Apple ID on Home Sharing

We now have 13 Apple devices in my house (big Apple family) and I need to create a second Apple ID for home sharing.  Is there any way I can transfer the ibooks, magazine subscriptions, and apps that are uniquely mine to a new Apple ID?

        1.    You might try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
        2.    Also try restarting the router.
        3.    If the problem persists, try a restore, you may want to try the previous procedures several times before doing this.
If this is a new Apple TV, it may also be that your network router is not allowing access to the timeserver, check that your router allows access over port 123.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Intermittent problems
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.
    Consistent Problems
A frequent cause of consistent failure to enable AirPlay or HomeSharing at all, is the service being blocked on the network. Make sure your network isn't hidden, has a unique name, that MAC address authentication is disabled, security is set to use WPA 2 Personal and that there is only one router/device acting as a DHCP server and providing NAT services.
Make sure your router/computer allows access over the following ports
    Port
    Type
    Protocol
    Used By
    80
    TCP
    HTTP
    AirPlay
    443
    TCP
    HTTPS
    AirPlay
    554
    TCP/UDP
    RTSP
    AirPlay
    3689

    DAAP
    iTunes/AirPlay
    5297
    TCP
    Bonjour
    5289
    TCP/UDP
    Bonjour
    5353
    TCP/UDP
    MDNS
    Bonjour/AirPlay
    49159
    UDP
    MDNS (Win)
    Bonjour/AirPlay
    49163
    UDP
    MDNS (Win)
    Bonjour/AirPlay
Refer to your router manual/manufacturer for any settings that are specific to that model.
Another frequent cause of consistent failure to enable AirPlay or HomeSharing at all, is security software, in many cases configuring it correctly, disabling it or even uninstalling it can help, but in some cases the security software can cause problems that simply reconfiguring, disabling or uninstalling cannot reverse.
If you are consistently unable to activate AirPlay, have tried all the steps in this article and have security software installed on your system, you might benefit from contacting its provider or participating in any online forums they run to discuss the matter with them.
