Apple TV - HDCP error message.

Cannot watch rental movies, just bought movies on new Apple TV.  Keeps coming up with something about HDCP?  Have tried all sorts of things to get it working, but can't seem to find a solution.  Any ideas?

I have rented two movies so far.  Didn't want to waste too much money with rentals.  On these two it did the same thing.  The first rental I rented through itunes store, but the second one I rented through the Apple TV itself.  Both had the same error message though.  I just remembered that when I did a reset of it, it would play about 2 seconds of it and then stopped (the introduction part of the filmmaking company i.e. MGM Studios).  After that it went to the error message again.

Our ATV has been working perfectly until recently when we installed the 2.2 software. We no can no longer play movies we've rented or purchased (even though we had been able to do so). We can still watch trailers and tv shows. Apple support has been terrible - blaming this on our tv, which they have said is not HDCP compliant. That is rubbish - its a new Sharp LCD, and is perfectly compliant.

    Yet another frustrated user.
I have verified my TV and cable are HDCP compliant, yet have suddenly started getting the same error message.

Frustrating to say the least. The more people yell, the more we have a chance of being heard.

  • HDCP Error Message

I have had my Apple TV about 90 days now and have had no problem in playing movies rented from Apple.  Now when I try to watch one, it starts an plays for about 10 or 15 seconds, then freezes.  I try to play it again, and I get an HDCP error message saying that I am either not using an HDMI cable or it is not properly connected to an HDTV.  Neither is true.  And nothing has changed with my setup.  I tried restoring and resetting to the original factory settings, and one time it did fix this, but now it does not.  What should I do?

I have an LED TV that is less than 6 months old (and my ATV is using the HDMI cable that freakin' came with it!) and I have been watching movies on it just fine until a recent up date and then have had the same HDCP problem that everyone else is posting about. Here is the only way I found to resolve it (besides the not helpful suggestion of "buy a new TV" ):
    On Apple tv go to:
    Settings
    General
    Reset
Reset all Settings (make sure you don't click Restore as it automatically updates the latest firmware).
You will have to go in and re-enter all your user info after doing this, but it fixed my HDCP error message problem and all my purchased movies are now playing like they should. Apple fail on this one as a lot of people seem to be having this problem and Apple should have at the very least warned everyone that this might occur.

  • HDCP error messages

I just started receiving HDCP error messages regularly for content that up until now had played fine.  I have HDMI 1.4 cables and a Samsung LCD which the Apple TV 2 is connected to. The content is coming off of an iMac running 10.6.7 and iTunes 10.3.1 (55) using Airplay. Both devices connect to my home network wirelessly via an Airport Extreme with 802.11n.
This AppleTV 2 experience has been horrible. It's been the hardware version of MobileMe.

I note all the things you have done, but did you try another cable. If rebooting the Apple TV temporarily resolves the issue, then you may indeed have a faulty HDMI card either on the Apple TV or the TV but it's far more likely to be a conflict caused by switching or cabling problem.
I'm not at all swayed by the wiki article, indeed I haven't even looked at it, wiki articles are written by ordinary people who are inclined to get things wrong in much the same way as you and I are. If you are happy in the thought that you have an HDMI 1.4 cable then that's all that matters, however you are the victim of a marketing ploy and perhaps you should be aware that the HDMI standards have actually forbidden cables to be marketed that way since 2008.
HDMI 1.4 is an HDMI standard, it does have more features than the standards that preceded it, but it doesn't require a different cable than 1.3 or indeed 1.2 did. The two categories of cable have the same number of connectors and the only difference is the bandwidth they are capable of communicating between devices (75 MHz for cat 1 and 340 Mhz for cat 2). HDMI cables do now have the option of carrying ethernet, but the range of cables has simply been extended to cat 1 and cat 2 with or without ethernet.
Of the other issues, I agree that listings of content in large libraries is poor and a definite step backwards from the previous model. The issue with the network time server though suggests the problem is with your network or its settings not the Apple TV. Scrubbing through a movie will entirely depend on how much of the movie has downloaded to the Apple TV, so yes these features may not work well for the first few moments after you start a download, but they will be significantly exaggerated if you have a problem with your network.

  • Can't sign in to iTunes Store on Apple TV.  Error message states Apple ID not recognized but the ID is the same as when I log into iTunes on my PC.  Any suggestions?

When I try to log in to the iTunes Store on my Apple TV I get an error message that says the Apple ID isn't recognized or password is incorrect.  It matches what I use for logging into iTunes from my PC, any suggestions?

    It's a straightforward port-forwarding issue.
You need to forward ports to the internal ip address of your apple tv as follows:
    TCP 123
    TCP 3689
    UDP 5353
    TCP 80
    TCP 4343
    TCP 53
This may also solve other problems you may have with homesharing...

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

Having trouble reinstalling iTunes on my Windows PC.

    Hey JayDizzal,

  • Apple TV HDCP error - very strange

    hello,
So my Apple TV is a couple years old now and I have never had any issues with it - it has been working with 3 different TVs of mine over the last couple years - I have just tried to use it in a different TV and I keep getting the HDCP error every time I try to play anything on it.
My friend uses his Apple TV perfectly fine on this TV and I have tried with his HDMI cable etc. and I still have the same error which makes me think it is an issue with the box itself.
It is still working just fine on my other TV it's just the new one it won't work on - I have tried all the usual diagnostics even resetting everything to factory settings.
    Any ideas anyone?

    Hi leistmacman,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like the Apple TV is giving an HDCP error. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • Tried to create new apple id & Server Error message

Earlier today I created (well tried) a new Apple id and the system returned an error message saying "server error" and the info I"d created disappeared.  I thought perhaps it might have worked regardless of error message but it didn't.
I've just set up a new ipad and decided that rather than the one apple id for everything I'd like to have a separate apple id for icloud.
I also notice that where it displays associated devices the ipad is not showing (but two phones are) ...  is there a delay or is there a problem with my apple id?
Thanks in advance for any info!

"You can only switch IDs to do this once every 90 days.  If you haven't done any of these three things on the device yet, it is not yet associated with the ID."
So, this means that if the first apple id I used (for instance, say an id that would allow me to shop in a store that's in a different country)....but I just downloaded free app, and then log out and have no plans on using that id again.
Are you saying that Apple will not let me switch back to my preferred id for three months?  Or is this just re iCloud?
Could this be related to the server error?
Where does one check to see when they can switch id's?

  • Apple TV iTunes error message

Apple TV, (first generation) now displays error message:  "iTunes store unavailable at this time.  Try again later."  I can access through the search feature, but that's all.  Have tired unplugging, rebooting, installing latest update, to no avail.  Any suggestions?  Thank you.

    Is iTunes up to date?
Strange this, do you get the error immediately or does it dowlnload the update first?
Is the unit still usable? Is it under warranty as I'd be tempted to let Apple sort it out if it is.

  • Apple Hardware Test Error Messages

I ran a hardware test on my iMac and the following error message appeared.
    4MOT/4/40000003:HDD-1243
    What does this mean?
    Thanks guys,

What prompted you to run the Hardware Test?
As far as I can tell, it's either an error with the Hard Drive or with the drive temperature sensor. If it were the latter, the fan cooling the drive would be operating out of its normal range.
Get iStat Pro and post the fan rpms, and temps, along with specifics on the model of your iMac.

  • Why am I getting an HDCP error message and what do I do about it?

Purchased an HD episode of Firefly, tried to play it before it was done downloading, and got a message that said:
This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection).
I thought it might be a problem with the download not being completed, but now it's finished, and it still won't play.
Here's what I have to say about this:
    1) Why in the **** didn't it say anything about this BEFORE the purchase went through? Seriously, Apple!
    2) I've downloaded and played HD from the iTunes store before. Why am I only having this problem now?
    3) What do I do about it?
