Apple TV optical out to DAC plus HDMI to receiver?

I currently have my Apple TV connected to my Denon AV receiver via HDMI which then outputs 5.1 audio and video to the TV.
My hope is to also stream my lossless iTunes music library to Apple TV (from my Mac Mini) which would take the audio from the ATV's optical out to my Peachtree Nova DAC, also connected to my AV receiver.
Is this possible? Or would the HDMI out from the ATV supersede the ATV's optical audio out?

Hey guys, I know this is an old thread but...
Try running your ATV to both sources. In my setup I have it running to a Yamaha Rx - V373 via HDMI for movies and tv. I also have the optical output from the ATV running to a Rotel preamplifier, which is connected to a pair of speakers that are great for music.
If I don't want the music to come out of the 5.1 receiver, I simple turn of the 5.1 receiver. Same way for movies, I will turn off the Rotel amp so the sound only comes out of the receiver.
By doing this you will take advantage of whichever component you need when you need it, reaping the advantages that it provides.
And Peachtree stuff is highly thought of in many audio circles. Very affordable for what it can provide. Can sometimes be found a little cheaters in eBay so try their first.

  • 5.1 to home theater receiver thru Optical Out not working; Fatality Platinum

I tried connecting the Optical Out on the front to my receiver's optical in. Made sure everything was set to 5. in both the Creative and receiver settings, and the receiver gets optical 5. just fine with my Play Station version 3 and X-box version 360 gaming computers. Please help, I have tried reboot, messing with settings, Google, I cannot fix this.
    Jinwoo from great korea!

Hi I have the same probleme, exept that I have succesfuly pluged my home theater receiver and the 5.1 works. Just my subwoofer seems not to work properly. Like when I plug it into a digital dvd player it works very nicely. but when pluged into the sound card it seems that it dosnt have any signal for it.
ANy clues??? I know i pluged everything finely I have tested the sound test for each speaker and sub to, from the receiver and from the creative software the sub seems to work but very quietly even if I cran the volume up on the sub or in the software , the sub dont work as it should.
1 thing I remarqued is that the sub works occasionaly in some movies. When listening to the music it not working and I dont understand that.

  • Optical Out

I set up my power mac g5 with an optical out cable to a surround sound receiver but no noise at all is coming out. The receiver is set up right, I changed the settings to optical out and nothing is happening. Anything this could be? Thanks

    Hi,
Actually, they do make optical cables like that.
Many of the old mini-disk players from the mid-to-late 90's used them for recording. For those who may not know or remember (of have purposefully forgotten) mini-disk was supposed to be the next big thing in a small portable "walkman-style" cd player/recorder. This was obviously before MP3 players took over and became so huge.
They used this mini-jack digital cable that had an optical mini-jack connector on one end and a regular optical connector on the other. With this cable you could record a digital signal from a standard CD player to the mini-disk player.
You should be able to find the cable at any Circuit City or Best Buy-type store.
    Best regards.

  • Apple TV 2 - HDMI - Optical Out

I have just installed my Apple TV 2 to my Panasonic TV which works well. However I have also connected the optical out from the ATV2 to my Sony Surround Amp, and cannot get any sound out by this method. It works with SKY so I know the amp is OK.....I have just upgraded the firmware to 4.4.4. Is there anything I am doing wrong or is there a fault with th ATV2 box. I have unplugged the end of the optical cable to the amp and it glows red....so am really confused. Does this only output with dolby digital from films or will it output the audio in stereo from the likes of Itunes as well?
Any help would be much appreciated

Audio over HDMI and optical should be active simultaneously.
If a movie has a Dolby Digital soundtrack this will get output over optical, if not or if a TV Show or music track/video it outputs stereo linear PCM 16 bit and supposedly 48 kHz not 44.1 kHz having decoded any compressed audio track such as AAC or MP3 first.
Check the amp input setting - if set to 5.1 and getting a stereo feed it may not register - maybe try an auto type setting.  Odd though as it's working from Sky - same input?

  • Sync problems with ATV per HDMI and optical out

Have some sync problems with ATV (actual), TV is connected via HDMI, sound goes over optical cable into DAC (Rega) and then to the amplifier, when using only TV-sound everything is fine, switching to the external speakers brings up a little delay, around 1/10 second. Any chance to fix this?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
I believe this delay is caused by the DAC, I don't think there is anything you can do about this.

  • Apple tv 2 and 1 not playing sound through optical out.

Hello all, just bought a new atv2. Thought I'd stress the difficulty i had in getting it to stream from the main Mac in the house. What a pain. Silly home sharing, why it couldn't be as simple as atv1!
Anyway it's working now. My issue is this; I want to use the atv2 as a music streaming device and not attach it to a screen. I will control it from my iPhone remote.
After connecting it to 2 hifis with optics I can't get sound to come out. In fact none of the 3 atvs seem to work by simply connecting directly to the optical out. Sure they are all fine when connected by hdmi. But I don't always want the tvs left on.
Also, I'm having difficulty in getting the atvs to act as remote speakers systems when i operate the main music library. I guess this will all be resolved when i work out how to get the optics to work!
    Thanks in advance.

Apple TV may or may not work without a screen. Some devices will not function unless they "sense" a display. This is particularly likely to be the case with a HDMI device, which uses a communication protocol that requires handshaking with the display.
The most common reason why optical inputs might not work with a receiver is that the receiver is not configured to take the sound off the optical port. Most modern receivers can accept sound from multiple ports, and optical is often not the default. Note that you can tell whether the AppleTV is generating a signal by unplugging the optical cable from your receiver and looking for the red light. at the tip of the cable.

  • Apple TV running 5.0, optical out not working, no sound

I just updated my apple tv to 5.0, hooked it up to my projector (HDMI) and to my Cambridge Audio Azur 640R for audio (optical cable). Unfortunately, no sound comming from the apple tv. Red light shines through the cable, already did a factory reset on the apple tv, played around with the audio settings on the apple tv, restarting it every time... no sound... and the receiver is set to recieve digital audio (tested it using another device to make sure).
    any suggestions?

Just a small update to all of you. Apple's engineering department just contacted me and we went through the procedure I do to play a movie (without sound) while it records this action as a profile then sent to apple. This is a good thing I guess cause it means Apple is very much aware and actively pursuing a solution.
So anyone reading this, create your own discussion or take an active part in one so that apple can contact you too to gather data and get this sorted ASAP!
I have a hunch this to some extent stems from AppleTV automatically configuring optical output to match the capability of the device connected over HDMI which will give AppleTv a 'list' of audio and video modes.
If for example a TV can only handle stereo digital audio over HDMI this then forces the same over optical when DD set to Auto.  So in my case, here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3822239?tstart=0
...setting DD to On forces audio out to DD over HDMI and optical so I get DD on the amp but no audio on the non-DD capable TV over HDMI.
I wonder with some of these projector setups if the device is returning no audio capability at all when handshaking, maybe in some cases if connected via an HDMI to DVI adapter/cable, or if the device simply has no audio capability at all.

  • HDMI  Out @ Optical Out at the same time?

I need to install an ATV 2 in my old home theater system.  The reciver does not accept HDMI inputs but does accept optical inputs.  Can I run HDMI to the TV and use the optical out port on the ATV 2 to direct the audio to the receiver for decoding and presentation?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Yes indeed that's how many of us do it. It also helps eliminate potential HDMI issues by connecting the Apple TV and TV by HDMI directly.

  • Dreamplug, 16 bit DAC, relevant when using optical out?

I am looking at this baby to use as an MPD server. The plan is to connect it to my amp through the optical out. The plan, of course, is to put Arch on it in due time (I don't know the status of the ARM port).
I assume the fact the DAC is only 16 bit does not matter when you use optical, but I just want to be sure .

.:B:. wrote:It has an SD(HC) slot as well . If I get it it'd just be running MPD, and NFS, nothing more. Should be able to squeeze that onto 1 GB (although it will probably be Debian).
Yes in that case you are probably better off putting a Slug on it instead of Arch, you'll have an mpd server up and running in no time. However, for a music station / fileserver, wouldn't an ARM NAS be an interesting alternative? They're not much bigger or more expensive, but you'll have the storage as well then.

  • Worn-out headphone jack as optical out for computer audio via external DAC

I have been using my iMac's headphone output jack to connect with a DAC and my audio system for some time now, but I apparently have inserted and removed the optical plug connector so many times to switch between DAC and internal iMac speakers that it has worn out: pulling the plug out of the jack no longer always switches the sound output back to internal speakers - Built-in. I have to pull it in and out several times and even this doesn't always work. Is anyone aware of a switch I could install to do this without constantly pulling the plug out and plugging it back in?

My suggestion to work around this problem would be to hook up an Airport Express. The AE also has an optical out the same as your iMac. As long as your wireless connection is robust enough you should be able to stream from your iMac to your AE and then have the optical cable connect between your AE and your DAC, which then connects to your Integrated Amp/Receiver/Pre-Amp (depending on your system configuration).
I assume because you are using the optical out and connecting to an external DAC that you are looking for a high level of Audio quality ?

  • Having problem with optical out on HD rental movie

Hi all, I just bought an Apple TV for myself for the holidays. I have the optical out going to a DAC then to my stereo, and it works fine for  music, Netflix, and iTunes Radio. However, when I rented a movie via iTunes (The Wolverine), optical out no longer worked. I did get sound through HDMI (and thus through my TV--not great, but usable).
Because this is a pure DAC (no Dolby), I had to turn Dolby Digital to Off to get Netflix to work. I tried Audio Output as both Auto and 16 bit, and neither setting worked. Audio Output = Auto works fine for everything else.
Anybody else have a similar issue? Thanks!

Turning Dolby Digital off shouldn't mean not getting any signal out of optical out. I turned it off when I had problems with Netflix movies, but now Netflix movies are fine. I'm getting sound out of optical out with them, which means that something is converting the sound signal to PCM.
The problem is that the conversion doesn't appear to be happening for iTunes movie rentals for some reason.
