Apple TV - sync with external storage?

I bought an Apple TV about 2 weeks and have been pretty happy with it. I have lots of TV shows saved on an external drive so as not to completely fill up my iMac. The external drive is connected to my iMac at all times.
Is there a way that I can sync Apple TV to this external storage device? Or watch TV shows from the external hard drive without moving them back to the iMac and then syncing with the Apple TV? Or is there a way I can leave TV shows on the Apple TV without also copying them to my iMac? My Apple TV is 160gb so there must be a way of using that memory without jamming up my iMac.
I've looked in the manual but haven't found an answer to this situation.
Thanks for any ideas or assistance.

Next thing to appreciate is how iTunes stores files.
The iTunes library, usually called iTunes, contains various sub-folders and files.
Some of these files contain the library database, artwork etc.
There'll be an iTunes Music folder which contains the media copied into iTunes on import.
There may be old library database backups, and a folder for iPhone apps if you have one.
There may be other folders for other sorts of user.
Is there a way that I can sync Apple TV to this external storage device?
Not without the files being known to iTunes - all communication with AppleTV in terms of local network file transfers works through iTunes.
Or watch TV shows from the external hard drive without moving them back to the iMac and then syncing with the Apple TV?
Yes, this is possible.
When you import a CD it will automatically store in the iTunes Music folder. You can see where file are by selecting Show in Finder after a right click on the entry in iTunes.
If you import a file from somewhere other than CD however there is a Preference under Advanced>General Tab which decides if a copy is placed in the iTunes Music folder or not. If you deselect the copy option iTunes simply stores a reference to the file not the file itself.
So, if you deselect copy you could just drag the files from the external drive onto an iTunes window and they'll be available for syncing/streaming but still live on the external drive.
This is probably your simplest option. There is a keyboard shortcut which from memory is the option key which will temporarily not copy an added file when dragged to iTunes.
Or is there a way I can leave TV shows on the Apple TV without also copying them to my iMac?
Using the do not copy option in iTunes will achieve this with files on the external drive not on the iMac.
There is no manual drag and drop type way of filling AppleTV with media which is a shame if you don't have the external drive.
You can in fact delete the file in the itunes Music folder manually from Finder and this will not remove them from the database - iTunes will complain if you try to play them or stream them but if synced to AppleTv you can play them from there. I do not recommend this approach, and you must not delete the file entry from iTunes or it will then also delete from AppleTV.
My Apple TV is 160gb so there must be a way of using that memory without jamming up my iMac.
The 160GB is mainly indtended to allow you to have more stuff on AppleTV so that youd odn't need itunes running all the time, or perhaps ifyour network doesn't allow smooth steaming.
It is not a backup and must not be regarded as external storage - many people assume it's storage and then lose their files when their computer's hard drive or external fails if they have no backup. Sorry to repeat this but it's important.
I've looked in the manual but haven't found an answer to this situation.
It's not particularly detailed is it.
Hope that helps.
There are some other options to consider too.

  • How often does the Apple TV sync with updated home sharing playlists?

I am trying to use several Apple TV's at my business for content management throughout our campus.  I want to be able to have a playlist of pictures and videos that is easy to update.  Can anyone tell me how often the Apple TV syncs with the home sharing network for an updated playlist?  It would be very inconvenient if the only way was to do a reboot on every device each time content was updated.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
I can't really say for sure how often the Apple TV updates its shared libraries.
I do however know that once the Apple TV as completed playing something, it will sync with the shared library in order to update the play count. So I'd be reasonably sure that the shared library is updated at least once every time something is played.

  • Why won't my apple tv sync with my new macbook pro, they are both on the same wifi signal

why won't my apple tv sync with my new macbook pro, they are both on the same wifi signal.

Not sure of what? In your second response you said the issue was with airplay. You were also having issues connecting laptop to computer, which points to a laptop connectivity issue. I simply asked if home sharing was an issue as well, since that will confirm the laptop as the cause. Your response that home sharing is on doesn't really help since that doesn't itself have a bearing on airplay nor does it answer the question in regards to if home sharing is working on Apple TV
If you have a further question you will need to be specific.

  • When apple tv syncs with itunes the media disappears from the apple tv

evrytime i purchase something through the apple tv i can play it on my tv until it syncs with itunes. after the sync the media just transfers over to my computer. how can I leave the stuff I buy in apple tv stay in the apple tv. and all of those other purchases that transfered into itunes how can I get them back on the apple tv?

Someone above mentioned this, and the answer is to make sure you're either set in iTunes to sync ALL episodes of your shows, or if you're set for ALL UNWATCHED, as I was, mark the episodes that were transferred to iTunes "New", then re-sync. Poof, they will all be copied back to ATV, where they will remain until you have watched them, even with iTunes shut down. I wrestled with this problem for 24 hours before it occurred to me.

  • Help, lost favourites and can't sync with external hard drive

I transferred my itunes to a lacie external drive because my ibook disc was full. I've changed my advanced preferences but my ipod won't sync with it and all my playlists have disappeared. Thanks in advance for help.

It could be the cable or the drive may have failed. Plug in another external HD and see if that works OK, if it does then that points the finger at the EHD.

  • Will Apple TV1 sync with the latest version of iTunes?

I'm about to try hooking up an Apple TV1 to my Mac for the first time and then sync/stream the content - any advice?

Problem solved. It turns out the ipod could not sync with iTunes because the original library was created on a different computer, my previous computer.
I didn't come across any reference to this being a problem in the Apple support guides and notes.

  • Apple tv sync with itunes

my apple tv will not sync with my itunes. i have installed the newsest version of itunes.
i have reformated apple tv as new. when it does sync it is only syncs for about 20 songs. apple tv then is not even in the devices section. i have turned off all firewall etc

I have the same problem; I solve it temporarily downgrading the itunes to version 7.7 and worked perfect, even though I still looking for the final solution.

  • Can apple tv sync with 2 Macs same iTunes user ???

So I have a macbook pro with my main music library, photos, movies etc as well as an iMac with the same itunes user but a different music, movie etc content.
I want to view(store on app tv)movies from the iMac because the laptop does not have room for the movies on it's internal HD. Can this be done? In other words can appletv sync with 2 computers?

Will movies stream over a wireless network
    yes.
or will it be to slow?
that depends on various factors. signal strength and possible _*wireless interference*_ for example.
however, TV comes with an ethernet port so if wireless doesn't work for you, you can hardwire TV to your computer or router.

  • Problems with external storage permissions

When i plug in an external storage i don't have read write permissions as user. Is it correct to run chmod -R 777 /media and chown -R du:users /media to solve it? (du is my username)

By default if you plug in a usb storage device only an item in /dev is added, but nothing mounted. The permissions and mount point depend on the application that does the actual mounting (pmount/udev/thunar/.../).

  • IPod cannot sync with external drive

I had to transfer my iTunes music folder to an external drive as I was running out of space on my laptop. I'm also using my desktop now instead of my laptop. However, it is now only updating a few songs and I don't know where they're from as I moved all the files to my external drive.
I've configured the iPod to update from the external drive but it cannot recognise it. Do I need to reset my iPod before I can sync up to my external drive?

  • Apple TV: Sync with iMac & stream from PC/Vista?

Happy New Year to all --
I have my main iTunes library on my Mac (box iMac, not portable) upstairs, and I have been syncing that library to my Apple TV downstairs. The syncing occurs, and I can listen to my library through my speakers which are connected to my Apple TV. This is setup fine. The only thing I don't like is that the Apple TV's options for playback are very limited.
I have a subset of my library on my laptop PC (running Vista). As this is portable, I'd sometimes like to stream music from this PC to my remote speakers which are connected to my Apple TV. Then I can use the iTunes interface on the portable to make playlists, plan upcoming songs, etc. on the portable and have the music streamed to the Apple TV and out the speakers. This I cannot get to work consistently.
So, I want to sync to one computer and stream from another. I do not have to do this simultaneously of course, I just want the flexibility that the iTunes interface has to offer, closer to the listening area.
I have tried many, many things. Rarely I can get the PC's iTunes to recognize the Apple TV, but when it does, the streaming is unlistenable (consistent dropouts). Today I haven't been able to get iTunes to even recognize the Apple TV's existence. I have rebooted everything (incl network/router), made sure all SW is up to date, changed channels, made sure PC is looking for the Apple TV, made sure UDP 5353 is open, etc etc. to no avail. My network is 802.11g and the signal is strong everywhere.
I thought this was possible, even desirable, and I also thought that the days of lousy audio streaming was largely over, since video is now being streamed with some success. My network is busy (two tivos, three computers, PS3, Apple TV) but not using a lot of the bandwidth most of the time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

    Multicast rate.
The multicast rate determines the minimum data transfer speed allowable for a transfer to take place, setting a high value may well make a more robust network but it may simply never allow a transfer if this is too high. I have mine set at 2 Mbps (although I can't be sure you have such an option on your router - sorry I thought you were using an airport.
    Channel
I couldn't suggest a channel, it all depends on which channels those around you are using, you'll likely need to try a few options unless you actually know what all the other networks around you are using. Other devices (cordless phones, microwaves etc) can also cause interference.
Is it common to be able to stream to the ATV (i.e. see it in the remote speakers pull down menu at the bottom) but not have it recognized as a device in iTunes (i.e. in the left column)? That's what sometimes happens to me.
I wouldn't actually know, I've never had any problems with networking my tv's, although network requirements for the tv and airtunes are not the same, so I suppose it's entirely possible that airtunes will be available while you are unable to access the tv.

  • IPhone 3GS no longer syncing with external hard drive

Going to try this in a new thread as I had no answer to my reply in another discussion..... Here goes:
Okay, I have a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard in which I just updated iTunes to 10.4. My iTunes library is on an external hard drive.
I updated my iPhone to 4.3.4 and the syncing stopped working. It did not download all of my purchased items from the phone.
I get an error that it cannot write to the iPhone then get an error regarding some of the photos or music. Here is what I have done -
    I restored my iPhone
I removed all photos from the iPhone and uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes
I unplugged the external from my mini and then it did a sync just fine - course I wasn't syncing anything to it!
I plugged back in the external via Firewire which is what it was before and I get the errors.
I haven't done anything with the photos and it is syncing ringtones fine - it is not syncing tv shows or all music - it comes up with an error
I uninstalled 10.4 and reinstalled the previous version of iTunes and again - same thing.. I have switched out the external hard drive cable and plugged it into different locations
I am at my wits end - want my phone back
Prior to the latest iTunes update everything was fine but of course I hadn't updated the iPhone yet - so I don't know which update is now causing the problem although I'm thinking it's the iTunes update..
Any thoughts? Beyond frustrated at this point.

I see views but no replies I have no clue what to do with this problem..
    anybody?

  • Computer won't sync with external TV

I am attempting to use my TV as an external display to watch movies and such. I am using a DVI to HDMI cable for the connection.
When I plug the cable into the laptop (MacBook Pro) the laptop will start to sync up but then will continually switch between the desktop and a blueish screen every few seconds.
On occasion this does lead to the Display application crashing and my having to reopen it. I got it to sync up last night after fiddling with the input selection on the TV I managed to get it to work. Now unfortunately I can't remember the sequence I went through to get it to work.

    Hi
I don't know about your problem, sorry. How about asking in the Macbook Pro Forum, they may know something.

  • What are the minimum programs I need installed from apple to sync with my iphone 5s? Which may I uninstall?

I have the following. I only need to sync my iphone with my computer once a month and be able to use Itunes. Which may I safely uninstall while still being able to sync in the future?
    Processes---
    AppleMobileDeviceService.exe  (YSLoader.exe)
    APSDaemon.exe (Apple Push)
    iCloudServices.exe (iCloud)
    mDNSResponder.exe (Bonjour Service)
    Programs--
    Apple Application Support
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Apple Software Update
    Bonjour
    iCloud
    iTunes
    Thanks!

The don't run until needed. They are not programs; they are system services (except for iTunes), and are normally suspended until they receive an interrupt. If you really want to stop them you can go to the Control Panel, Services icon, and stop them. Then start them when you want to use them. You will need an Administrator account to do this, however.
Launch the Task Manager, Processes tab, and see how much CPU they use. It will generally be zero except when the phone is connected, either through WiFi or USB.

  • Does apple support syncing with outlook 2013

I read somewhere that apple does not support calendar or contact sync between iphone running ios7 or above with outlook 2013. jsut looking for some confirmation so i know whethere to stick with 2010 or not.

    Hello Murphy410,
Thank you for the question.  You can use iCloud Calendars with Outlook 2007 or later (Outlook 2010 Personal Edition is not supported) according to the following article:
    iCloud: System requirements
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can enable the iCloud Calendar in the iCloud Control Panel as outlined in this article:
    iCloud: Change iCloud feature settings
