Apple USB modem disconnects after a few hours??

I bought an imac G5 -- it came without a modem. (After a false start), we bought the Apple USB modem. Now we want to upgrade the operating system, either with Safari or with "Software Update". It tells us we need Mac OS X Update to 10.4.3, and it is 97.0 MB.
We have a fairly slow dial-up connection -- always have, so we usually download large files like these overnight. But our Apple USB Modem won't let us - perhaps it is too unstable. After 6 or 7 hours we get disconnected. (It says we need 8 or 9 hours to download the file). Our main problem is that we can't stay connected for more than 7 hours.
I've made sure under the Network Preferences, for external modem, the Prompt every xx minutes to maintain connection, and Disconnect if idle for xx minutes, are both unchecked. I've turned off the screensaver. I make sure I move the mouse and a window every hour or so. I've phoned my ISP, and they deny a time-limit. I've tried not breating heavy near the computer.
What else can I do? I've always been able to stay on line over-night for download with my old computer/modem, but not with this one. I've tied at least 4 times. Is there something wrong with the Apple USB Modem?
Also, when I tried with Safari, and the modem disconnects, I thought I could just re-log on and start downloading where I left off -- but no. Every time I click the "resume downloading" circle next to the update in the download window, it starts from the beginning. -- it doesn't resume where it left off!
That is the most frustrating part about this -- I've downloaded the first half of the file a half-dozen times, and no matter if I use Safari or Software Update, I can't get the computer to remember the hours of work it just did and simply continue downloading from where it left off. If I could just solve that issue, I could get the system update downloaded.
If we don't solve this, we will never be able update any apple software with large files. Thanks for your help.
Francis

it's a 3.5 hour round trip to the closest Mac store.
I just want my modem to work right -- the first time. Actually, this is the third modem I've bought (all on-line since I have no mac store close). The first USB modem didn't have a mac driver. The next bluetooth modem said it was mac compatable, but when it arrived, it was only capatable with os9. So I get a modem right from Apple, and darn, I just want it all to work now. I'm tired of foolin around. Why wasn't there an internal modem anyway?
My old modems and macs could download overnight. All I want is for it to be as good as the old stuff.

  • L2TP Remote Access disconnects after a few hours.

Have a few users on Vista/7 using Windows L2TP to connect to our ASA5510. It is reported that after a few hours the connection drops. From what I have seen this can be anywhere around 5-6 hours. Of course my connection will drop after an amount of time has passed and no traffic has passed the tunnel. But the users are adament that this drops during large transfers; i.e. not a timeout issue.
Before I spend anymore time on this I just want to know if this is normal behavior for a remote access L2TP using Windows to disconnect on it's own after this amount of time. Never had a reason myself to remain connected that long, and when I did I used a site 2 site tunnel.

Below is a sample log of the time when disconnects occur, I highlighted in bold the problem area.

  • Firefox get disconnected after a few hours

I have Windows 7 Enterprise. With version 35 Firefox lost connection, the only way to make it work is to close it and reopen. I look for some fix in the support pages but there is no answer. The only similar issue suggests it's a firewall issue, but even if disconnect my computer firewall this still happens. At home there is a Windows 8.1 professional computer with the same issue.
I upgrade to version 36 expecting this issue is fixed but it doesn't.
I installed different windows browsers (Chrome, Iron, Tor, Opera) the only one with this issue is Firefox. Behavior make really unlikely to be a firewall issue.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause
Firefox issues. '''Disable All of them.'''
Start '''[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Firefox in Safe Mode]''' {web Link} by holding down the '''<Shift><br> ''(Mac Options)'' ''' key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?
Are you having the problem with one web site? Several, many?
What were you doing at the time?

  • I allways get disconnected when using Apple USB Modem

    Hello!
I have bought the Apple USB Modem with my MacBook and want to use it for a dail-in connection in the netherlands (kpn). But when I dail in, I allways get disconnected. After dailing in, sometimes I can open a few pages in Firefox, sometimes only one page or not any page at all. Sometimes I can open an IMAP folder with Thunderbird, but most times I get disconnected before. When I establish a SSH connetion, it works a little bit longer, but after some time the connection is terminated too. Most times I have to wait very long (>20 seconds) until a hostname is resolved, sometimes it's quite fast, somtimes resolving fails. Especially when I try to open several websites at the same time I get disconnected very soon.
Most times I get an error message like "modem unexpectedly disconnected connection".
Can someone tell me where I can get more information about WHY the connection was disconnected?
This way I cannot use the Internet, sometimes it takes up to 1 hour to come to a particular web-page (e.g. open a special mail in my web-mail account).
    Best regards
    Andreas

Thank you! I use 10.4.7, but could not try it yet, but looks promising. Does Apple know about the problem? Will there be a fix in an update soon?
    Thanks again!

What operating system version, and do you have any backups of your data off the machine? TimeMachine? Option Key bootable clones? Storage? DVD's?
A reinstall of the operating system may be in order as a last resort, so if any of these steps on these links get you into the machine, make sure to backup your personal data (Music, Pictures, Documents, Movies) off the machine to a non-encrypted  powered external drive regular storage drive (not TimeMachine as it might be corrupted too) and disconnect as soon as possible.
Good Luck and report back all what you tried.
Also report what change occured before this tragedy happened, was there a  Software Update? A EFI firmware update? Etc.

  • Annoyed with Apple usb modem

I am very disappointed in the Apple USB modem and its disconnecting probelms. I called Applecare on this, and the first thing the tech said was I should have gotten the internal modem. Yes. On an iSight iMac. I had to tell him it wasn't an option.
After a few seconds of silence, he went through a litany of things You Must Absolutely Not Do With A USB Modem. Like do not start the computer with the modem plugged in (I have no idea how one does a restart since one is also advised not to unplug it when the computer is running). Do Not unplug the modem when it is in the 'interminable disconnect loop' (I already found that this causes kernal panics which generated the call), Do Not open any applications while the modem is connecting (this causes it to immediately disconnect). Do Not plug in any USB or FW devices while the modem is running. The list went on. He also said that he would email a Kbase article on these modems and how to use them. Well, the article I got was a 2 year-old article on internal modems. No matter, it was in Japanese. No help from Applecare.
What annoys me most is that it constantly disconnects when using any app more processor intensive than Safari. I can't burn CDs or DVDs, or any Photoshop work. When it does this, it takes at least 10 minutes to disconnect if it does it at all. I was compressing some video which still had an hour left to go when the modem disconnected. I had to wait until the compression was done, so I could do a restart and get the modem to stop.
I am getting very upset about this. This modem should perform as well as the internal modem it replaced since the internal isn't an option. When I get back home from Christmas, I'll be calling again, but my first call was very disheartening, since it appears the tech sent me some arbitrary article to get rid of me.

I doubt the tech sent you an arbritary article to get
    rid of you.
The fact is that USB Modems are in fact problematic
    NO MATTER who the manufacture.
That being said the reason the article that he sent
you was outdated is because the technology is the
    same outdated.
You must remember that the technology has progressed
well behond the 56k modems of old, and yes I am aware
that in many instances that is all one has available
    for whatever reason.
That is the reason that the DSL was developed to get
away from the inconsistancy of straight dial up.
Bear in mind that the USB has shown to be unreliable
, innconsistant, and fair at best.
So the fact is that when the tech gave you the do's
and the dont's of USB modem use it was so you would
understand the problems you will face if they are not
    followed.
    Cheers Don
He was able to give me the information regarding all the do's and don'ts over the phone, and I doubt if he pulled the info out of a hat - so why didn't he just send me what he was reading? He gave me a litany, far more than I could remember, hence the request for instructions on (what you yourself mentioned) is a faulty device. Intructions not included in the manual btw. It seems to me that if doing a certain action, like unplugging it during an unstoppable disconnect loop, causes kernal panics, then Apple should mention it. Publish it, actually.

  • Can't get Apple USB modem to work in Boot Camp

I've been struggling to get an Internet connection under boot camp/Windows XP for several days. Have an Apple USB modem and installed all the Apple drivers. Apple tech support says they can't help me with Windows (cop out). Both Microsoft and my ISP tech support team have both been great and have spent hours trying to help me. Their final conclusion is that the modem is working fine, but the underlying flaw is the inability of an Apple system to run Windows. In desperation, I've ordered a US Robotics USB modem from the Mac/PC Connection that is both OS X and Windows XP compatible. It is on backorder for 2 weeks
Any help you can give me in the meantime would be greatly appreciated! Glad I kept my old Dell!

"I am confused, QuickDraw. If the poster cannot get online via Windows XP, how does he or she get the drivers?"
I was speaking of the Boot Camp drivers that comes on the Leopard Disc. This could possibly be the answer to your troubles as well if you haven't already installed them yourself. After you've successfully installed Windows via Boot Camp, you need to boot up into Windows, then stick in your Leopard Disc and the drivers are supposed to install automatically. If after you've installed the BC drivers you still cannot get online via your router, then post back.
    Hope this helps.
By the way, you really need to start your own thread. That way you'll have a better chance of being assisted from others. Just a suggestion.

  • Why does my IPod shuffle stop after a few hours playing on shuffle when it should go for days?

Why does my IPod stop playing after a few hours on shuffle when it should play for days?

A few possibilities...  (Each numbered item is a separate thing to check or try.)
    (1) What does the shuffle's light do when you connect it to USB?
    (2) If the docking cable plug is not fully inserted, it may not have a good connection for charging.  Make sure the docking cable plug is fully inserted into the shuffle's headphones jack, as shown in this document
iPod shuffle (4th generation): Not seen in iTunes
    (3) If there are other USB devices connected to your computer at the same time, try disconnecting other devices (including USB hub) so that the shuffle is the only device connected to a direct USB port, to see if that makes a difference (you can leave standard USB keyboard/mouse connected if used).
    (4) If you have a USB power adapter (such as from an iPhone, iPad, or other device), that plugs into the wall outlet, as a test, connect the shuffle's docking cable to the adapter and connect the shuffle.  Does it change from a power adapter?
    (5) Some newer Windows PCs (if you use Windows and not a Mac) may have a "feature" that shuts off full power to the USB port when a connected storage device is no longer mounted by the system.  An iPod is a storage device, and after syncing, iTunes unmounts the iPod's disk (if you are using automatic syncing).  If Windows shuts off full power to the USB port, the battery cannot charge.  To see if this is the problem, does the iPod appear in iTunes when it is connected, even though the battery is not charging?  If it does, select the iPod in iTunes so that you see its Summary screen.  There is an option (checkbox) there for Enable disk use.  If it's not already checked, check that box and Apply.  Enabling disk use keeps the iPod's disk mounted continuously, so Windows will keep the USB port at full power (and the battery will charge).  If the iPod now charges, there may be a way to disable this "energy saver" feature in Control Panels, so that you can turn OFF Enable disk use.  NOTE:  When Enable disk use is turned ON, you need to Eject the iPod in iTunes before physically disconnecting it.

  • WRT54G3G/Vodafone connect card - Network loss after a few hours or sometimes days

I have a Linksys WRT54G3G router with a vodafone mobile connectcard. I did setup the "keep alive" function to the nearest DNS servers to keep the modem alive 24/7. However after a few hours of somtimes after a few days. The modem "hangs" itselves. After a power-up of the modem it's start to work again. This modem is on a project location with no people available to reset the modem. At this moment we use a local timerswitch to reset (power off/on) the modem every 24 hour, but this is not really a solution. We're using the latest firmware. Please advise !

    Re ; WRTG3G-ST Disconnect - I am running 2.00.9 firmware with a Sprint S720 card.
The Router disconnects from the Internet after a few minutes of operation.
I have set 'Auto Connect' to both auto (1000 min)  and manual. and still get the disconnect.
Once it disconnects I cannot reconnect remotely even if I launch a browser or ping.
Pressing the Data Card button does reconnect to the Internet.

  • Apple USB Modem

I am trying to help a friend set up her new computer. She purchased a brand new iMac and an Apple USB modem. She lives in an area where she can only connect to the internet via dialup.
The iMac is running system 10.5.4. The USB modem is plugged directly into the back of the computer, not a hub. The phone line and connection are fine on the old blueberry iMac.
Now for the problem -- the computer recognizes the modem, dials, and attempts to connect with her ISP provider which is LocalNet. However, it never authorizes and a disconnect occurs. The error message is "Could not negotiate a connection with the remote PPP server. Please verify your settings and try again."
I have spent HOURS on hold with LocalNet, and have spoken with their technical support three times. No one seems to be able to figure out the problem and they are blaming it on the modem. Are there any known issues with Apple's USB modem? Does anyone have any suggestions? What should I do next?

You should look into authentication parameters, username, password and connection options your dial-up provider requires! If the modem is new, and also if its dialing, most likely there is nothing wrong with it - it tries to connect, but it fails the authorization procedure... thus you need to look into authentication parameters \ settings... that's my 2c thought :))

  • OSX 10.4.10/Apple USB Modem issue

    Hi there:
3 weeks ago I bought a new imac and also an apple usb modem (since we only have dial up where I live).
I wasn't having a problem at all with connecting to the internet.
I am online virtually most of the day and, at night, I disconnect and put my computer to sleep.
Now every morning when I go to connect, it just says "connecting" endlessly, with no dial tone....YES, the phone line is working.
It does nothing to disconnect the phone line, the modem etc.
If you click "disconnect" it just says "disconnecting" endlessly.
I am forced to shut down the computer and reboot to make it stop and reset itself and then I can connect to the internet just fine.
The only thing I can think of that changed since when I first got the computer is that I upgraded to OSX 10.4.10.
Does anyone know if this is a 10.4.10 issue or a modem issue?
I posted this in the old hardware forum as well....
    Help!
    Thanks!

I don't know how much of a Mac background you have, so forgive me if I state the obvious. Before and after any upgrade you should be repairing permissions (in Disk Utilities). There are some AOL issues with this modem if you use that ISP. I am having a problem with my usb modem not dialing for sending a fax @ work until I uncheck "wait for dialtone" but I am dialing through a work phone system. I have not figured out how to make this the default setting. Since you have a new iMac, you should call Apple Support by your misbehaving phone line.
    Good Luck

Check this link from apple support http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1821
Apple suggests disabling 802.11 wireless from windows xp. hope this will solve your problem. The funny thing is apple is not even sure it will fix the problem because they mentioned on their website "in some cases".
    Symptoms
The Apple external USB modem may not connect, or may not maintain a connection for longer than a few minutes if you are using Microsoft Windows XP on MacBook Pro, MacBook, or Intel-based iMac computers that have built-in AirPort/Bluetooth.
    Products Affected
Boot Camp, Apple external USB Modem
    Resolution

I have a problem with one of my Iphone 5s users.  Everything was working with his IPhone 4S, but the phone died and so they replaced it with a 5S
We are using an IBM Lotus Notes 9.01 Server  (latest FP patch) and Traveler 9.01 FP4 with the iphone 5 s.
On his Iphone 5S  we install  Notes Traveler...  Everything works on it, but after a few hours  we not able  to delete messages on the IPhone.  When he clicks Delete on a message  on his Iphone,  it comes back saying it is "Unable to Move the message"
If I remove Traveler and reinstall it, he can delete the messages for  a few minutes or even  a few hours, but then it comes back and says it cannot move the  messages when we try to delete the email on the Iphone 5S.   The Iphone had   7.1.1 OS...  I updated it to latest Apple 7.1.2 OS on it..  Same problem.   We also have an AOL account on the Iphone ....that works fine...      All other Traveler users on Iphones  4S or 5S users are working Fine...
I had IBM look at it.  They did some testing and the  email deletions only appeared on the logs when   it synchronized to Traveler, but when the problem occurs...  it never did show anything in the Notes logs, about the Delete request.   They are saying it is an Apple problem.
I even reset his IPhone 5 S to factory defaults and re-setup Notes Traveler and after a few minutes or a few hours... When he deletes a email he gets the  Cannot move the messages again.   I opened a bug report with Apple by never heard back from them.  All other functions of the email work..   He can send and receive emails...  He just cannot delete after a few hours.  I ran checks on he email database and everything comes up OK...

That's odd.  You will probably have to contact Apple support on this one.  I'm not sure if their is a problem with your account or a server glitch at their end but in either case, they will probably have to look into it for you.  You can reach them here: http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/.

  • Mac book pro mid 2009 shuts down after a few hour then will only boot after waiting and pressing power button numerous times. I am running mountain lion with most recent updates.

Mac book pro mid 2009 shuts down after a few hour of use and then is very difficult to reboot. Sometimes I have to wait hours, sometimes I have to repeatedly press the power button and then it will slowly start a little longer each press untill it completely boots. It has done this three times know.  Each time I was watching a video.

Try running the Apple Hardware Test - sounds as if you've hardware issues.
