AppleFileServer process keeps hanging - stalls clients' AFP connections

Since moving to SL Server (first used on 10.6.4, now 10.6.6), Mac clients have been complaining of spinning beachballs when accessing the server. This appears to have gradually got worse over time, as more of the clients have been upgraded from Tiger & Leopard to SL (we're now running 6 Tiger, 2 Leopard and 8 SL clients). It's driving us nuts, as it happens frequently to all users (all designers), several times daily.
There seems to be no common trigger from the client side for the symptoms, i.e. not restricted to any one client, any one app being used, nor any particular action on their part. It can happen while opening, saving, copying or moving files from/to the server, but very intermittently, so hard to reproduce on demand.
Indeed the same hang happens on the server when I'm the only one connected to it at night, from just about any of the client Macs, whether they are SL, Leopard or Tiger. If I do a test file copy from/to the server, the AFS process will often stick at some point, though not always, even when using the same test files/folders each time. Have tried various different folder/file combinations during the tesing, with pretty much no difference in behaviour, nor any consistency.
Having searched the web, I can't turn up any hard explanation for what's happening, nor a fix. Others out there are having all sorts of hassles with AFP, SMB, etc, but all in different configs & flavours it seems.
Anyway, I did finally manage to find a correlation on the server... when any of the clients hangs during open, save or copy, the AppleFileServer process on the server shows as "stuck" in the output of the 'top' command (top -o state). There are a couple of other processes that stick sometimes, but they have no obvious hit on performance or stability (these are usually launchd, DirectoryServices & msd, and no correlation to the AFS stick as far as I've seen).
Whilst 'stuck' like this, the AFS process CPU load mostly shows as 0.0%, and eventually frees itself up, with AFP then working normally again for all users. So, there are no server or client crashes, but it can lock up for anything from a few seconds to several minutes at a time, and perhaps 30-50 times a day, during which time no-one can load, save or browse files on the server
Am now very close to doing a full re-install of SL, though I doubt it will help, as the problem's been there since I upgraded the server to a new XServe with SL 10.6.4. But first I was wondering if anyone here might have the same/similar problem, and throw any more light on it?
The Macs are used on a corporate WAN, with Active Directory logins (but the problem still happens when connecting with the server Admin a/c). Networked Home folders are not being used - all users have managed user Homes locally. Users are located in both London and Amsterdam, but the problem occurs for all.
Interestingly, am seeing similar client hangs when testing with SMB as an alternative to AFP (but didn't try that with the top command yet), so I'm suspecting this might be related to the networking layer of things, rather than AFP specifically? Not exactly a safe assumption I know, especially as thus far I can't even tell whether it's originating from the clients or the server side of things. I'd put my money on a bugged AppleFileServer app though. We didn't get this nonsense when everything was Tiger, on the same network as now.
Short of running with Tiger on old hardware (simply not an option for us), we're stuck with SL. Countless other (mostly) recurring errors showing up in the logs (as per usual with any Mac OS), but none with so vicious a payload as this. Now desperate for a solution, but little spare time to find one.
Any suggestions, or requests for more info, please let me know. Have already tried numerous avenues, including AFP access/error logs, tcpdump, Google, etc. etc., but no clear indicator I could find.
I'm no Mac geek btw, so please be gentle!

Hi,
You are not alone with this.
We have an OD master, separate file server (AFP with Raid attached with 2000+ users, 250 mac clients and on average 100 clients connected to network homes at a time.
All caches are redirected locally, time machine and spotlight searching disabled on the servers.
Running on 10.6.4, and working with no updates or changes nicely until...
Since December (after a clean install in July) we have really noticed the well documented (but not fixed) AFP crashes. It seems to occur for us when we have a few users using InDesign CS3 ( i have no proof of this but there is a pattern emerging). Up until december we had the most stable apple server setup i have known in 5 years, whereas afp used to just lock up completely, now it just restarts itself upon error.
Apple Premium support recommended updating to 10.6.6 before they would support us on this.
10.6.6 made it worse (slower logon times and even more crashes). Eventually they recommended to stop using Adobe programmes (in an art and design college).
We are currently testing with mobile home directories on this setup.
We have been using a similar setup (smaller though) on our music tech campus but with mobile homes, with great success for over a year now, although there are only about 50 concurrent logons on average there.
Well worth looking into as i have no faith in apple fixing this as most of the new server users are using very small setups with 10 clients max (home users with mac minis??).
I will keep you posted on how i get on because this really is a show stopper for us several times a week and it is really embarrassing for me to say to the customers i dont know what to do.
Regards,
Kev

I do not think this is an xsan issue. DNS or AFP is more suspicious, I think. Do you recognize "Wildlife"? Is it a share or system on your site?

  • MDNSResponder error: no afp connections from OS X client

    Hi,
I have a 10.4.10 client that cannot print or use afp connections. When trying to print I´ll get "Print error"-message, and when trying to connect to afp server system just waits and waits.
    System.log gives an error:
"mDNSResponder: 16: FoundInstance: ftp.tcp.local. PTR . received from network is not valid DNS-SD service pointer"
Any idea where the problem might be?
I have tried cache cleaning, log cleaning, repairing permissions, and so on.

This is also being disucssed somewhere else https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5486117. I have the same problem, sorry i can't help.

  • Can I find out how many clients are connected to a server process?

Hi, I am hoping I can find out how many clients are connected to a server process. This could be either a programmatic lookout number, a number in a log file etc.
By the way, does lookout have any application (not data) logs? I have noticed that occasionally lookout will crash and I cannot find any logs to determine why, what processes were running, who last accessed it etc.
    Thanks

    Hello,
There's currently no way to acquire this data. I think that'd be a great suggestion for the product. Please submit your feedback to our developers at the following link: http://digital.ni.com/applications/psc.nsf/default?OpenForm&temp1=&node=

  • Why does Firefox keep hanging, crashing, sulking, dying when internet connection behaves?

Why does Firefox keep hanging, crashing, sulking, dying when internet connection behaves? Once it renders the page it should forget about the page. Why does it behave when some link is clicked when there is no internet? It should just say internet not available or some crap. Why die, sulk, crash?? I don't get it! 3 series was much much much better!

I should add, I've re-downloaded Firefox, but that doesn't look like it has helped any. Still get seemingly inexplicable crashes.

  • Clients cannot connect using afp running lion 10.7.1, worked ok before upgrade from 10.7 to 10.7.1

I am running a macminiserver on ahome newtwork.  Original running snow leopard and then upgraded to 10.7 lion on all machine and everything was working fine.  Clients coul connected to shared drives on the server using afp.  However, after upgrading to 10.7.1 on the server and client machines, they can no lnger connect to the drives using afp, however you can connect using smb.
I ahve tried stopping and starting the afp server, rebuilding permissions on the server - still cannot connect using afp.
    Any ideas?

Be sure the correct Lion afp port is open on your router, even if you are using an Airport (port 548 tcp). Just do a search on "Mac OS X Lion ports".
Also, if this is outside of the network, use the full server name in the Finder's Connect to Server, afp://server.com; when it prompts for a username, enter your first name and last name (not your short name) and then you also need to enter your password. If you don't have a fqdn, then you can use the static ip for "server.com"
It should work, working for me inside and outside of the network. Admittedly, I don't think you need the port on the router for internal use, but you can test both ways.
When working outside of the network a vpn is not required.

  • WRV200 Wireless light keeps blinking, no clients connected.

    Hi,
Sorry if this is a silly question, but im wondering why my linksys wrv200 wireless light on the router keeps blinking even though my wireless laptop is not turned on?  I checked the router status and no other clients are connected so im puzzled as to why the wireless activity light is blinking which shows activity as per the manual.
    Is this normal??
    Thanks

The DHCP client table only contains the computers which requested an IP address from your router. Any device/computer with a static IP address will never appear in that list. You cannot tell if a wireless client with a static IP address is still connected or not.
Wireless clients may (more likely) appear in the wireless client list. I don't know if the WRV200 has it or not. Usually you'll find the wireless client list by going to the wireless MAC filter setup tab. Enable the filter if it is not enabled (no need to save the setting), press edit filter list, and it pops up a window where you have another button "wireless client mac list". That button shows you a window of active and inactive wireless clients with their IP address. Any static IP address client should appear there, too. (If the list is not there, search the manual for it...)
You could make another test: change the SSID temporarily on the router to something else. A longer random string. Setup WPA2 with a random preshared key. Save the settings. Disconnect all computers from the router. Still blinking? Unplug the modem connection from the router. Still blinking? If the router is still blinking with nothing wired to it and a wireless network that nobody knows (yet), well, that should clearly indicate a router problem (or at least a wireless light problem). If that is the case it should not be too hard to bring the router back to the shop and show them what is happening.Message Edited by gv on 12-18-200605:43 PM

  • 10.5 clients cannot connect via AFP to 10.4.11 server

    Server : xServe running 10.4.11
Login with AFP is successful with
    Clients:
    all 10.6.x
    all 10.4.x
Login fails ( or more accurately never produces a login dialog window,
just get a "Connecting to afp://x.x.x.x" message with barber pole
progress bar ) with any 10.5.x client ( workstation or server )
There is another 10.4.11 server in this network that allows 10.4, 10.6
and 10.5 clients to connect without issues.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

The server uses both OD accounts and Local, but mainly the logins are local accounts on the server. Cannot login with either one - but it is definitely limited to just clients logging in from 10.5 workstations or servers... The same accounts can login fine from 10.4 or 10.6 machines. Seems to be a config problem limited to this 10.4.11 server. But have no idea what it could be. I have another 10.4.11 server that does not have this issue.

  • BPEL Processes are Hanging.......

    Hi,
I am using BPEL 10.1.2.0.2 version. The logic am implementing in BPEL process is a frontend application will invoke BPEL process.BPEL will take some inputs from frontend and invokes a procedure in database using DbAdapter.BPEL will pull the output of the procedure and will pass the same to Frontend.
The logic being implemented in procedures is select and update depends on the requirement.
We completed our development and moved to UAT and everything is running fine. From past one week we are facing a problem that BPEL processes are hanging when they are invoked both from BPEL console and Frontend. The process neither displaying any output nor throwing any exception.
After bouncing the BPEL servers everything is coming to normal.I didn't found any error log in both domain.log and OraBPEL~OC4j_BPEL~default_island.log files.
Our BPEL Environment has 2 BPEL Mid Tiers connected via a loadbalancer
whether it could be related to cache size or datasource connections ????
Please suggest what could be the problem...........
    Thanks
    Chandra

Check the timeouts on the firewalls. Also look at Dead Connection Detection (DCD) on the database server. You will need to turn on your DCD to keep your JDBC connections alive.

Was something remotely working on or aliased to that erased stuff?
The error code 1712 is an "Apple event timed out"
    error. error -1103 noSendResp.
So it would seem to me that some FCP poject(s) are looking for clips that no longer exist.
    Might try these solutions...

  • Wyse Thin client not connecting to Windows 2008 R2 server

    Configuration
    SBS 2011 Server
Windows 2008 R2 server with Remote Desktop Services installed, License Manager installed.
WYSE WT3125SE thin clients with Windows CE 5
I setup the Windows 2008 with Remote Desktop Services and was able to successfully connect the Thin client.   Then I installed the License Manger and applied my Open license using User Cals.  Was able to login.  Next day I get the following
error-"Because of a security error, the client could not connect to the remote computer.  Verify that you are logged onto the network and then try connecting again"    I still can connect fine from other machines even Windows Home Ed.
I remove license server and still was unable to connect.   Built a second Windows 2008 R2 server with RDS on it.  Was able to connect without issue.   Pointed it to the first RDS server license manager and have still been able to connect with
the Thin Client.   The thin client can rdp to the SBS server without issue in admin mode, can connect to RDS2 server but not RDS1 with the license manger.    So my issue is with the license and so my question is what is it with the license server
running on that server that is keeping thin client from connecting.  I even did a reload of RDS1 and tested connecting throughout the process and it worked up until I applied the license and then it stops. And then if I uninstall the license, rds, remove
from domain still not able to connect.  Any help would be appreciated.

We had the same problem with older terminals after cloning a 2008R2 rds server and sysprep it.
The original rds server worked fine but when the old terminals connect to the new 1 they come up with the error : Because
of a security error, the client could not connect to the remote computer.  Verify that you are logged onto the network and then try connecting again"
After reading all of the postings about this issue and tried the reactivate solution of the license server,
I was sure that it had something to do with the x509 certificates that are generated the first time you connect to a valid license server.
What I did, I installed a new license server activate it but did not install licenses on it.
I pointed the defective rds server to the newly installed license server and deleted the following registry keys:
               HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\RCM
    Certificate
    X509 Certificate
    X509 Certificate ID
    X509 Certificate2
    Then reboot.
After the reboot all old terminals can connect fine again. As final step I pointed the rds server to the same license server as the other ones,
    reboot and all worked fine.
So conclusion is that when you pont a rds server to a license server that has the new type of licenses on it it will generate the wrong x509 certificates
that are not supported by the older clients, by pointing it first to 1 without any rds calls on it, it generates the older x509 certificates which are compatible with the older rdp clients then the switch to new license server will then not regenerate the
x509 certs so it keeps working.
    I hope this helps someone
This issue was driving me crazy so very happy that it is resolved now
    Cheers Frits

  • 10.7.5 Lion Server limiting AFP connections to 10

I have an Intel XServe, Late 2006 2 x 2 GHZ Dual-Core Xeon with 20GB DDR2-DIMM RAM running Mac OS X Server Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) that has started to limit AFP connections to 10. This is a problems as we use this server to host Network Home Directories for 1/3 of our students (approximately 100 student directories are hosted on this server via a fiber channel XServe RAID).
I know that OS X Server can handle thousands of simultaneous AFP connections...I'm using two other 10.7.5 XServes to host the other 200 student accounts (1 XServe is an Early 2008 2 x 2.8 Quad Core Xeon with 24 gb of RAM running the same OS Build and the other is an early 2009 2 x 2.26 Quad Core with 24 GB of RAM running the same OS X Server build). Both of those XServes currently have between 40-80 AFP connections. Before last week, the oldes XServe was functioning normally, allowing 20-60 connections. For some reason last week, AFP crashed on this system and when I rebooted the server it now refuses to allow more than 10 AFP connections (confirmed by an error message from clients attempting to connect). I know that this behavior is more indicative of OS X client which only allows 10 simultaneous connections. The only messages in the AFP error logs are:
AppleFileServer[172] <Info>: TCP Listener returned error on accept
    repeated over and over again.
Anybody have any thoughts on why this might be happening? After everybody leaves today I'm thinking of disconnecting the RAID from this Server and then attaching it to one of the other two XServes and then re-mapping the the student accounts to the other servers, but I'd hate to decrease my load-balancing as this is already a fairly slow solution as it is.
    Thanks,
    Christopher

I've done some more digging and it looks like the three packages included in the update have about 4000 files that didn't get installed.  A good number of them are .png or .icns files, but there are whole applications (e.g. VNCServer) that didn't get updated.
The system is currently in a state where it cannot install software via Software Update or via Installer.
    Any ideas?

  • Clearing Unwanted AFP Connection

I have a brand new unit and copied over my apps and profile as part of the set up process. Along with it came a setting for an old, and no longer existing, AFP server (by IP address). Now, during every startup, I receive an "AFP Connection Status" window looking for this non-existant server, which I never received on the old G4. The only reference I found for it was under the Finder in "recent servers", which I cleared.
I'm looking for suggestions on where else to look and what to change to remove this entry all together.
    Thanks

there is probably a file it's looking for on the old server such as a font, file or folder.
I remember this happening to me when I pointed Safari's default download location from the desktop to a testing server. once it was offline it would hang and hang with the AFP message.
figuring out which one may be tricky, but I think that's probably it.
    good luck.

  • 15' Macbook Pro keeps hanging

My Macbook keeps hanging, it happens every few minutes, sometimes it can happen 3 or 4 times within a minute.
I've used Etrecheck and copied the results below.
Paragon NTFS seems to be a problem, I thought i had already uninstalled it but apparently not. I have tried reinstalling it and then uninstalling it again, but i can't get rid of it. Any ideas?
Also, what is the system launch daemon?
Finally, should i worry that there are 11 errors on the Hard drive. Disk utility says it is fine.
    Thanks,
    Ben.

Finally, should i worry that there are 11 errors on the Hard drive.
Yes.  The drive could be failing.  First and foremost make sure you have a current backup of your hard drive.
Next, as John pointed out uninstall MacKeeper and keep away from it from now on.  Linc Davis posted excellent instructions for removing MacKeeper:

"MacKeeper" is a scam with only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
    First, back up all data.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
If you have incompletely removed MacKeeper—for example, by dragging the application to the Trash and immediately emptying—then you'll have to reinstall it and start over.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the other functional components of the software will be deleted. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.
☞ Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
☞ Let MacKeeper delete its other components before you empty the Trash.
☞ Don't try to drag MacKeeper from the Dock or the Launchpad to the Trash.
☞ Don't try to remove MacKeeper while running in safe mode.
As for the HD errors Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair the disk several times.  Also repair disk permissions. Reboot normally and rerun Etrecheck to check for the HD errors.
