Appletalk network through Linksys seems impossible to set up...

I wonder if anyone might have an idea why I seem unable to get an Appletalk network set up between my MDD G4 1.25 and my new iMac with Leopard?
I'm trying to establish an ethernet network through a Linksys Wireless-G 2.4 543 mbps router.
I've followed all the steps involved... I've set both computers to:
Appletalk on
Share printer in the security pane
Automatically configure the ethernet
I've loaded the printer driver in both computers.
But I've had no luck whatsoever with any of it.
I can't even get the network to show up in the Network Utility.
I can't get the printer to show up in the add new printer setup...
I've tried unplugging the router and changing the ethernet cable plug-ins.
It all sounds so easy in the instructions at:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106658
Does this sound like a hardware problem?
I'm totally flummoxed....
Thanks for any ideas...
jn

"Anyhow, I've turned on printer sharing, Appletalk, no-sleep with both machines on and the printer on... and still I can't get any sign of an Appletalk network showing up."
What sign are you looking for? I think you're being distracted by all this talk about Appletalk. You won't automatically see the disks of the other computers, nor will you automatically see the shared printer from the other computers. Once computers are on the network, which your are if, for example, you can browse the internet, then in order to see each other's hard disks you have to mount them.
The following describes 10.4; I don't know how much different it might be on 10.5. If I remember correctly, it was much the same in 10.3, but it's been a while.
On computer #1, in System Preferences, Sharing, it will tell you something like "Other computers on your local subnet can access your computer at ...", and some name will be in place of the ...
On computer #2, in the Finder's "Go" menu select "Connect to Server." Type in the name you saw in the preference pane on #1.
If the printer you want shared is on #1, then on #2 you have to go to the Printer Setup utility and look for the shared printer there. In my limited experience, it's not too hard to find a shared printer in the Printer Setup Utility.

  • In the new version of Thunderbird it seems impossible to set that attachments are shown as"Read only". It was possible in previous versions. Can anybody help?

In previous version of Thunderbird it was possible to set that incoming attachments are shown as "Read only". The solution was to set browser.helperApps.deleteTempFileOnExit as TRUE. In the latest version, no matter how I set this value,. the attachments ARE NOT shown as Read Only. As I need my attachments to be shown as Read Only, I had to restore older versions of Thunderbird. Does anybody have an idea how I can solve this in the new version of Thunderbird ?

I don't see a solution on these links. I am not a computer expert, but it was easy to fix in previous versions of Thunderbird. I can't do it now with the latest version, on either Windows 7 or 8.

  • Need some advice on setting up network through distribution panel

We just moved into a new house with a distributed wiring panel and I currently have my wireless network up and running. Problem is, I also have ethernet jacks throughout the house that I would like to use for Internet connectivity (the panel didn't include a network module so they just dumped the cabling runs in there). I currently have a cheapo cable modem in the panel, with one ethernet port, and I ran it out to my jack where my Time Capsule is located, so Airport is working fine. Now I need to get some of those other ports working in the house so I can use them for wired connections if I need them.
I tried using an 8-port switch in the panel. and I get connectivity out to the jacks, but I can't connect to the Internet on our Macbooks. So, I'm guessing I would need to use a router in the panel instead. So my questions are ... Would my Airport network through the TC still work when connected through a router, or would I need to reconfigure a bunch of stuff? And do routers usually require a lot of setup, or are they pretty much PNP? I'm fairly new at this stuff and know about enough to get me into trouble. Thanks!

    Hi Jimintexas,
My home is also wired with 37 data jacks and 32 video, with 3 distributed panels( w/16 port gigabit switches) in various areas. My cable modem is also in a different location than the airport. I found that instead of adding routers and such, that as long as I had 2 jacks in the same location, I could connect the cable modem ethernet port directly to the WAN port for the AEBS (TC in your case) by patching the jacks at the panel, and then I connected the LAN port back to any of the switches (that are all connected) through the second jack at the location. I don't know what your distribution panel setup is but chances are it is just 110 punchdowns with standard cable patches so this is fairly easy to accomplish.
    Hope this helps,

  • Can't connect to PPPoE through Linksys anymore....

I've been running my Earthlink DSL through a router for 9 months without any problems. (Model: Linksys WRT54G v3.1)
But yesterday it seemed to just not work anymore.
When I connect the ethernet directly to my Netopia modem from my G4 MDD Powermac, I can connect easily with the 'automatic' settings.
HOWEVER... no matter how many different settings I try, I can't get the connection to work through the Linksys router. I keep getting the message 'Could not find PPPoE server'. The Network Settings says the ethernet is set up and trying to connect, but it can't seem to.
I've tried unplugging, pushing in the reset buttons and all sorts of other things, but nothing works.
I contacted Linksys and they claim you can reload the router firmware with a Mac. But after downloading their firmware update, I found it can't be opened by my Mac.
But I'm wondering if the firmware is even the problem?
    Any clues much appreciated....

That sounds like the exceptional tech support experience.
Frankly I'm shocked at how bad the earthlink tech support experience was. In the past it wasn't that bad. It used to be a 3 minute wait and then someone halfway knowledgeable would be there.
This time I waited through 4 minutes of brainless telephone ads until they put me through to the Phillipines to Moron #1 who started off asking in an almost impossilbe to understand accent "What eees your father's middle name?" and then "What ees your credit card number?"
I explained to him that he was supposed to as for the mother's maiden name and that I would NEVER give him my credit card number. And then... after another 3 minutes of telephone ads I got connected to another identical 3rd world slave labor tech person who simply asked me all the same questions over again
Needless to say, the experience was a sad reflection of corporate strategy... thinking this is going to get them customers.
Rant over... thank gosh for the Apple discussion boards!

  • Print from Windows desktop via network, when the printer was first set up on a Mac

My new printer works fine from my Mac mini. It is set up on my local network through a BT hub router, wirelessly, Bonjour enabled. When I try to set it up in addition to work from a Windows 8.1 desktop, the printer is recognised and the print-job goes to the print queue but then vanishes from the queue without any printing having started.I have tried using Wireless Direct for the Windows computer but it doesn't seem to help.I will now uninstall and re-install the Officejet on the 8.1 using the disc and see if that helps.I understand (is this right?) that enabling printer sharing doesn't help, as there are two different OS (Mac and MS).Any help would be very welcome.I had before another HP printer (Photosmart B110a) for the windows 8.1 (and on the Mac) and it never seemed properly installed on the Windows computer either. But it did print (but not scan etc.)

This problem is a result of a limitation in Windows 9x regarding the size of an image that you can send to the printer. The problem does not occur on Windows 2000/NT. This problem appeared with the increased color options of LabVIEW 6.0 on which the BB1.2 is based.Although it is not immediately obvious, your video driver and settings play a role in printing.
    1. Try adjusting the color palette your driver uses (i.e., 256 color, high olor, true color). The error may occur only in one of these modes. Also, change the resolution (number of pixels) to represent the Screen Area; e.g., change from a 1024 x 768 display to an 800 x 600 pixel display.
2.Certain video drivers also support "acceleration" modes. Using a non-accelerated mode often eliminates the error. For
Windows 95/98, right-click on your My Computer icon and select "Properties" from the pop-up
menu. On the Performance tab, click the Graphics button and change the Hardware Acceleration (e.g., if it is set to "Full", lower the setting a notch or two); for Windows 2000/NT, right-click on your Desktop and select "Properties" from the pop-up menu. On the Settings tab, click the Advanced button and go to
    Troubleshooting.
3.In Windows, the standard VGA driver provided by the operating system is very stable. Try using this driver in place of the specific one written for your video hardware. If the error is eliminated, there is likely a problem with your vendor-provided video driver.
4.These errors are most often fixed with the latest
video/printer driver. Be sure to contact your hardware manufacturer and install the latest driver. An easy way to determine if your error is "driver-related" is to move your code to another machine (and hopefully a different set of drivers) and see if th
e error persists. If the problem is printer related, try another printer.
5.Make sure there are at least 100M avalible space in your C: drive. If not, set the virtual memory to the other drive which has larger available space.

  • Trying to print through Linksys router

    Hey there,
I'm trying to get a co-worker's Macbook to print through the Linksys router we have set up in the office, but it's proving to be more difficult than I imagined.
I've located the printer through System Preferences, and strangely enough she DOES have Internet access (browser, mail, etc), however printing doesn't want to work for some reason.
Has anyone had experience networking Macs with Linksys routers? And if so, how can we get the Macbook to print through it?
    Any advice is very appreciated.

hey, i did have the same problem for a while, i had a linksys router setup through a print server. if your printing through a print server, make sure that it has a static IP address and then just put in the information in the printers folder.
if your not using a print server, try enabling windows sharing, printer sharing and personal file sharing in system preferences > sharing folder.

  • Moving to *default* AppleTalk network

This is more of a AppleTalk Printing environment question.
Currently we have all our HP Laserjets and Canon Copiers on a named AppleTalk network that is named/hosted by an old and good for nothing Compaq Poroliant Server. It does nothing at this time but host the named AppleTalk network all the printers are on.
Without it, prints don't happen. IP printing is not as reliable an option as I've tried to switch to it before.
My goal is to shut down the Compaq and switch all the printers over to a non-specified Appletalk network. I know this is possible, I'm just not sure what to enter in the AppleTalk network name for the printers. Is it "*" or "default" or just leave it blank.
If you have a moment please take a look at your printers if you are printing through an "unammed" AppleTalk network and post your feedback.
    thanks for your time,
    r a j a

In Sys Prefs Network, under "Location" drop down menu, choose "New Location" and set it up as need be. If you already have half a dozen "Automatics" then choose "Edit Location" and edit each one, one at a time, and rename each one appropriately to reflect the network and/or its settings and/or location. For example, I've got three locations defined, named "Airport" (for wireless), "wired" (for ethernet), and "cell phone" (for dial-up over my cell phone), each configured appropriately for 802.11, RJ-45, or PPP access, as appropriate.

  • Extending a (non-Apple) Wireless Network through Ethernet with AirPort Expr

I have two Airport Express base stations and a Linksys Wireless Router/Modem - I want the AE's to extend the network in locations the Linksys can't reach.
I'm currently doing this through having the AE's set to "Create a wireless network" and set to "Bridge mode", they have the same SSID and WPA password as the Linksys.
Despite this, when I walk from one to the other, my laptop can't seamlessly hop from one to the other. I have to turn off AirPort and search again.
Can anyone help make this work?

Power everything down and then start the modem first and let it run a few moments, then start the Linksys the same way, your AirPort Express next, etc., and finally your computers.
If no luck, you might try matching up with WPA2 Personal. That is a more compatible setting among routers.
I assume that you are using the exact same Radio Mode on all devices. For example, 802.11 b/g
Sometimes security settings are just not compatible between different manufacturers. That may be the case here if you continue to experience problems. I've had the same problem that you have now in the past except with a Netgear router and the AirPort Express. The only way I could solve it was to replace the Netgear with an AirPort Extreme.

  • I have a wireless network using Linksys's WRT54GR each is...

I have a wireless network using Linksys's WRT54GR each is set as a wireless access point. The PC is working great on the network but the MAC is having troubles as it moves through the apartment. The MAC even shows connection to the correct access point but yet there is no internet. If we unplug the access point and plug it back in the MAC is re-establishing the connection. I checked the apple site and they recommended different channels on the network. I have tried this. I know the network is functioning because the PC is connecting without a problem. Any advice or ideas would be appreciated.

    try channel - either 1 or 11
    beacon interval - 50
    Fragmentation threshold - 2306
    RTS threshold - 2307
if this doesn't make any difference..try updating the drivers for the wirelss card on the MAC

  • I use 2 TVs but because Apple TV is on HTMI2 it want send to the other TV through my LeapFrog that is set up for Directv on HTMI1. Do I need a separate LeapFrog or is there another way. Directv is connected to the other TV only with the leapfrog. Help?

I use 2 TVs with directv but AppleTV uses HTMI2 and directv HTMI1. How can I get my leapfrog to work through HTMI2 and not having to switch back and fort for DirecTV, Do I need 2 LeapFrogs. I only have one DirecTV box.

It is not properly connected to the network.
Make sure location is set correctly
DNS should be on auto (settings - general - network)
    Try ethernet
Signal strength on device won't account for issues, you would need a network report from istumbler, netstumbler or similar. This will show accurate signal strength along with noise and nearby networks

  • Unable to connect to network through repeater

    Hi
I Cannot join network through the wireless repeater.  My Iphone 4 works fine next to the router but when I walk downstairs it disconnects.  It can 'see' the repeater as the signal goes to full before disconnecting.  I have tried resetting networks ect but this does not help.  Everytime I put the password in it says 'unable to join network' but works fine if I go near the main router or switch the repeater off.
It used to work fine untill I got sky on demand. when I connected this through the repeater it seems to have kicked my phone out??  i have since removed the on demand but still cant get my iphone to work.  My girlfriends Galaxy also doesn't get signal through the repeater either.  Any help please

  • Extending WiFi airport network through ethernet

    Dear mac users,
in a three stories house I used to have a wifi network, containing the internet provider modem-router as DHCP, an airport extreme via ethernet to it (bridge mode), and a time capsule and an airport express extending wirelessly the network in the 2 other floors respectively. As I had delays in wireless backup and some hickups in music streaming from the airport express and video streeaming from apple tv, I decided to change the topology and connect the time capsule and airport express via ethernet to my airport extreme. I took the opportunity and used a netgear switch to hardwire 3 other ethernet sockets in my house. In one of those I plugged the apple tv. I followed your guidelines and use the create a network and bridge mode guideline for setting up the devices. I also use the same name and password for my network, (name: abc, and a WPA2 password). Internet access is OK in all stories. Nevertheless I have two irrtating issues:
    a) the airport utility cannot see all three airport devices simultaneously (airport extreme, airport express, time capsule), as before. It only sees the ones in range, depending on the position of my mac in the house.
    b) it seems that depending on my position in the house the network my computers are joining has different name, ie. abc 2, or abc 3 or abc. In addition the remote app on my iphone and ipad, cannot see the aiport express to stream music when they are not in range to the airport express.
Could you please help me. What's wrong with my setup?
Thank you in advance for you kind support
    George

+Do I need to turn of NAT for the roaming network to work?+
If your AirPort Extreme is connected to a modem (only one ethernet port on the device), then you need to configure the AirPort Extreme to handle both DHCP and NAT. This will be done for you automatically when you do the following:
Open AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address
If your AirPort Extreme is connected to a gateway (a combination modem and router that will have 3-4 ethernet ports), then you need to setup the AirPort Extreme as a "bridge"
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
All of your other devices...Time Capsule, AirPort Express must be configured as follows:
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as your AirPort Extreme network
Radio Mode = Your choice, but should be similar to the AirPort Extreme
    Channel = Automatic*
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your AirPort Extreme
Wireless Password = Same password as AirPort Extreme
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
    Update to save settings
    * With a lot of devices, you may want to set the Channel manually. Set up separate channels for each device and keep the channels as far apart as possible.

  • Treating all future networks as a public network how disable that popup and set it to public

I have a lot of sys-prepped machines, and when they are attached to a network
They show a popup new network discovered, and if it should be treated as private / work / public.
Well i dont want that popup, i want to disable it from ever pop-ing up, and i need to set all future discovered network as public.
How do i disable the popup, and set future discovered networks default to public.
By wmic / vbs / powershell  or some c# code ?

Whenever you see the popup dialog, select the option Treat all future  networks as public, and don't ask me again. This will treat all the future networks a public only. And if you need to change the location, click on the location type under
the network name and change it to the preferred location (for eg, in the below image,
Home network under SPI-Private is clicked to display the dialog).
For additional information on implementing through PowerShell, you can refer
Set-NetConnectionProfile topic from TechNet Library. Excerpt from the reference link (example) is given below:
    PS C:\> $Profile = Get-NetConnectionProfile -InterfaceAlias Ethernet1
    PS C:\> $Profile.NetworkCategory = Public
    PS C:\> Set-NetConnectionProfile -InputObject $Profile
The first command gets the connection profile for the network adapter named Ethernet1. The command stores the results in the
    $Profile variable.
The second command assigns the value of Public to the NetworkCategory property of the connection profile stored in the
    $Profile variable.
The third command sets the network category of the connection profile stored in the
    $Profile variable.
