AppleTV iPhoto Sharing Limitations

I have approx 27,000 photos in my iphoto library. The "All photos, albums, events, and faces" option is selected for sharing from iTunes.
First off, my AppleTV 2nd gen takes a LONG time (several minutes) to load the library when Photos are selected. After the wait, a large number of my events and photos are not available on the AppleTV. Specially, anything older than mid-2003 is missing. Faces do not seem to work at all (you can see the names, but all of the photos are blank).
Is this expected behavior?

I also have a little more than 27,000 photos. There appears to be a maximum limit of 20,000 photos that can be shared in Apple TV2 using Home Sharing through iTunes.
There is another discussion thread, where many others have found this same limitation:

  • AppleTV 2nd gen, iPhoto sharing, wireless

I see if I purchase an Apple TV 2nd generation, I can show iPhoto pictures on my LCD TV wirelessly that are on my Macbook Pro and use my iPad as a remote control to switch between pictures that will appear on the TV.
But what if I have iPhoto pictures on my Intel Mac Pro with no wireless card, can I set it's iPhoto preferences to share the iPhoto library, then use my Macbook laptop to subscribe to the Mac Pro's iPhoto library, and then have the AppleTV and my iPad show the pictures on my LCD monitor and use the iPad to control what pictures are shown wirelessly?
    Thanks

I think I found the answer to my question. I can stream photos from my iPad to the Apple TV and I dno't need to mess with iPhoto sharing via another Mac on the wireless network.

  • Have new iMac with iPhoto sharing turned on. When the shared library is clicked the library disappears or starts to load then disappears? What is wrong?

Have new iMac with iPhoto sharing turned on. When the shared library is clicked the library disappears or starts to load then disappears? What is wrong?

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it doesn't then your current library is damaged and needs repair.
Therefore  make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If you experience the same problem with the test library then try this basic fix a try:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If that fails a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the source it came on originally.

  • IPhoto - Sharing Library Problem

    Hi
I recently experienced a problem with the iPhoto Sharing option.
I am currently on a MacBook Pro and a new iMac. Both are running iPhoto 6.
If I select 'Share my Photos' and 'Look for shared Photos' on both, I cannot get a connection. Nothing appears.
I do this at work every few days without a problem. But on the home machines it does not work.
Could it have something to do with the sharing settings in the System Preferences? iPhoto Bonjour is active on both machines.
I previously had trouble with the AFS, SMB etc file sharing - is there a way to reset that?
    many thanks for any help,
    Stefan.

    not to worry.
this problem has been fixed. I deleted Sharepoints, and ran Cocktail, turning all shares off and on. After a restart, everything was fine again.

  • How does iPhoto sharing work? Does it enable someone to share your photos on a public wifi?

How does iPhoto sharing (in preferences) work?  If you enable it, does it allow someone to view your photos while on a public wifi? I am using a macbook pro with 10.7.4

Only if you set it to do so and only if the person on the other end has iPhoto.

  • Iphoto sharing iphoto album text

When I save my iphoto album to Photostream, external hard drive or a USB,  the faces, descriptions, and comments are not included.  How can I share the complete album with another Mac or PC?  Also, how do i get the text info included when I create a book?

Next move is to try and repair the existing Library
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Iphotos - shared in source list

My self and my wife share an imac and in iphotos in the shared  in source list it automatically shares with her Facebook account. Is it possible to add my FB account to the shared tag? I dont know what verison of iphoto I am running perhaps someone might be able to inform me how

Are you using the sam user account on the iMac?   If you want separate Facebook accounts in iPhoto, you need to use separate User accounts on your shared Mac. Only this way can you have different Preferences settings for sharing.
Only, if you both sign into the Mac from different user accounts, but want to use the same iPhoto library, you need to move the iPhoto library to an external drive, see this link:

  • IPhoto sharing not working

As of today I am unable to share any of my photos to any of my accounts that are enabled in iPhoto, Facebook, and more importantly, flickr which I use for my work.  They are greyed out.
I tried closing iPhoto, and reopening, but that didn't fix the issue, so I them deleted the accounts in iPhoto, and tried adding them again and act

OK, so something is not quite right, I have had to reboot my iMac every day now to get iPhoto sharing back, otherwise it just greys out.
Anyone know what the issue is?

  • Created sideshow in iPhoto shared with iTunes and now it will not finish when I try to burn it.

    Using Yosemite 10.10.1
Created a slideshow in iPhoto shared with iTunes then created a DVD in iDVD and it plays in Quicktime in my MacBook Pro.
What I'm trying to do is create a DVD that will play in a DVD Player on a TV Screen.
When I try to burn to a DVD it is slow and then freezes in the final phase of burning. However, when I check the DVD nothing has burned. The disc is empty.
    Any ideas?

Here's how to create a video DVD from a slideshow in iPhoto:
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  For iPhoto 9.5 and later select 480p.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

  • Difference between iPhoto Bonjour and iPhoto Sharing

  • Sharing Limitations?

    Hi:
Have searched the many "sharing a library" threads, but this covers slightly different ground:
I'm not looking to let other users have any kind of Add To or Edit type access to a Shared library, but...
I would like them to be able to search that library they're viewing using keywords, etc., AND to be able to drag copies of those images from that shared library into their own iWeb projects, for example.
Am I correct (albeit surprised and disappointed) that you can't do that? That you can import images from a shared iPhoto Library into your own library, but you CAN'T simply drop those images into an iWeb project. That you can see all the images in the shared library, but you can't SEARCH through those images using the keywords which have already been assigned to them by the main user?
None of these acts involves changing anything about the master library or its database -- does it? -- so how come both seem to be forbidden? Am I missing some preference setting vis-a-vis shared libraries?
(And for that matter, why is a shared library -- which shows up just fine in the left hand pane of iPhoto -- not also visible under the photo tab in iWeb's Media Browser?)
Again -- I'm not wanting the "other users" to be able to change or edit anything in the actual library, just to be able to fully SEE everything (including the keywords), and if they so desire, to make copies of those images by dragging them into the windows or image placeholders of other Apple/iLife apps -- and to be able to do that without first having to import those images into their own separate iPhoto Libraries.
It just seems like the way things should work in a world of tightly-integrated consumer-friendly apps on a multi-user machine.
So -- is there perhaps some Permission thing I need to set or re-check, or is it just time for another feature request to the iPhoto Feedback site?

According to the iTunes Store Terms and Conditions I read the limitations are based on what is termed 'Associated Devices.' The limits are based on 10 Associated Devices, provided no more than 5 are iTunes-authorized computers. Also, Apple TV is not considered an 'Associated Device.'
By my count you have a total of 8 or 9 Associated Devices:
1 Mac Pro and possible another computer
    3 iPads
    2 iPhones
    2 iPod Touchs
1 Apple TV (does not count against your limit.)
Regardless the limitations are believed to be based on licencing restrictions imposed my the media companies. It's possible that if it were up to Apple there would be more liberal restrictions.

  • Home Sharing Limitations

Are there any plans on lifting the 5 device limitation for Home Sharing?  Even by means of a licence purchase?
Seeing as Apple products "Just Work" - I have come to a cross roads with running iTunes Home Sharing.
Everyone has their own music/video/apps library on the Mac Pro, and I have another shared Library with other music (the albums you may not want with you all the time etc.), some movies and TV shows - most purchased through iTunes.
4 people in the house (2 adults, 2 kids) - 3 iPads, 2 iPhones, 2 iPod Touches and an AppleTV (possibly 3 Apple TV's in the future) - this 5 device limit is causing me to look for other solutions like TVersity, which may not work as well, but do not impose as many limitations.
Even a 5 concurrent user limit would be better.

  • HT4858 Aperture / iPhoto shared photo streams

But when I try to upload say 1500 photos to shared photostream from aperture, it just gives an error saying 1000 is max.  It doesn't upload any at all. I got the impression from this article that it would upload the first 1000 and then continue uploading as allowed but in fact it gives the error and does not upload anything.
Trying it in iPhoto it claims I have some files that are not jpeg, raw or png.  I tried smart albums but iPhoto 11 doesn't appear to have a way to filter file types.
All of this to try to make my Apple TV 3 5.1.1 screensaver show more than 200 of my 45000 photos.

Yes that may be true but it is not relevant to my stated goal.   I am acutely aware of the limitations Apple TV has on HomeShare - it seems to limit to about 200 pictures regardless of how many you share.  I understand it has hard disk limitations but it should in fact be able to stream them over the network.  It doesn't and I think that is a bug not a feature request.
However in using regular Photo Stream the ATV3 does seem to stream or at least cycle through all 1000 photos.
The shared photo stream seemed like a workaround, since I have over 45,000 photos, and my simple goal is to have them randomly displayed on my tv.   I don't need all 45000 to be there simultaneously or cumulatively: 1000 per day even is more than enough, and pushing those out of the queue for the next 1000 would be no problem in fact helpful.
It's just that the article seems to indicate that once reaching a limit iPhoto or Aperture will resume uploading once the time limit has passed.  That does not seem to be the case and so now it seems the workaround will have to involve a script perhaps though I don't know if there is a feature like that in either of the programs.
And I appreciate the reply Winston, but I would appreciate solutions rather than roadblocks from your expertise. Thanks.

  • IPhoto sharing limit (OS X with iOS)

I'm using OS X (MBP) and iOS (iPad).
I want to share photos (high-defs) in OS X to iPad, via iPhoto.
I tried to share total 15 photo streams from my OS X, totaling 1000+ photos.
It was pretty smooth at beginning. It worked well.
But after uploading and sharing a bunch of photos, the upload has been stopped.
Some photo streams just shows a cloud image (meaning not uploaded yet).
So, I'm wondering whether there is limitation on total sharing size.
I'm just a normal iCloud user. No additional storage purchased.
    So far, I've uploaded 800+ photos and 800+MB. I didn't share publicly.
Thank you in adavance to share your experiences.

Here is a kb article about Photo Stream limits:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4858
There is a 1,000 picture per hour limit which may have interrupted your uploads for the 1,000+.

  • IPhoto Sharing via Streaming Issues

    3300 Iphotos in total
    Sharing/streaming done from MacMini.
    Lasted software releases.
Sharing via streaming stops associating the photo with the stream. When you click on the photo with the info window it shows that photo to be associated with a sharing stream. When you click on the streaming link it goes to  that stream but the picture is not present.
I have not hit the apple limits posted, however did not find one that says the limit on the number of streams, I have 24.
I have deleted the sharing stream, rebuilt/repaired the data base with the option/command dbl click and still same problem. Waited an hour. Turned off sharing on associated device. These are not shared with the public and only with my own email so no one else involved.
This happened yesterday at about the same place in the photo process.  So I turned off and on sharing which deleted all my streams and started again this morning only for it to start again.

I'm waiting till the new Photos application for Macs and iPhones is released with the release of Yosemite next month.  That will change the game quite a bit.
Photos will come next year - a bit after the Yosemite release; http://www.apple.com/osx/preview/apps/  says:  "Photos in OS X is coming early next year."
I don't know if the fact that the Camera Roll is no longer in the Photos app on the iPhone is by plan or a glitch in the installation.
At first I thought both were still there, because my migrated iPhoto library is still showing "Camera Roll" and "Photo Stream". But that are the remnants of a nice app.
The new "Recently Added" album looks like the successor to both Camera Roll and Photo Stream. I think the Camera Roll Album is gone. The manual does not mention it once.  And the missing "My Photo Steam" must be a glitch. The manual says:
"All photos added to your Recently Added album—including screenshots and photos saved from email, for example—appear in My Photo Stream." How can photos appear in the My Photo Stream, if it is not visible?
