Applications unexpectedly Quit, No menu bar/ HD Volumes, Spinning Pinwheel

Hi Guys,
Experiencing a host of problems with my G3/OSX-10.3.9 I have an 8.5 and a 4.2 gig hardrive w/ a couple gigs of space(not much I know).
Whenever I boot up, the aqua background shows and now my cursor is perpetually in the upper-left corner of the screen. No menu bar/hard drive volumes or icons of any sort display. A pinwheel spins and stops sporadically. The finder does show, but any app I choose(including System Preferences) starts but then "Unexpectedly Quits". I used the install disk to verify and repair permissions. Then re-started but to no avail.
What caused this? I'm not 100% sure. My last download was Universal AVI components to help with converting avi files to mpeg. The install ran fine, but later when I rebooted this occured.
Can anyone please offer any suggestions, any help is very much appreciated.
Thanks
-Bruce

Hi Bruce
Was universal AVI components an Apple product or not?
Have you tried uninstalling it?
If you can't get to a functioning Desktop, restart in Safe mode:
Starting up in Safe Mode
What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)
and then try an uninstall that software using at best its uninstaller if it had one, otherwise weeding out the files by searching for them and deleting them.
If you have already removed the software, then try reinstalling the 10.3.9 Combo Update.

Please Help. Snow Leopard - Everything 'quits unexpectedly' and top menu bar flashing.
Basically, I have been using snow leopard for about 1-2 weeks now without any problems, apart from the strange trackpad expose glitch, but I can live with that. But a new problem has arisen that I CANNOT live with. Basically I plugged in my MiniDisplay > VGA adaptor and a Wacom internet tablet for the first time. And when it booted up rather than just the usual spinning gear, their was a progress bar as-well. Then it booted into Safe Mode.?
Everything was fine in safe mode apart from spotlight didn't work properly so I rebooted and this time it loaded normally. EXCEPT about 5 minutes after I logged on the top menu bar started to flash on and off about ever 1-2 seconds and virtually every single application would quit unexpectedly before even loading. I haven't really looked into it apart from a quick search on google which doesn't seem to bring up anything similar, but atm I am having to use my bootcamp partition with windows installed (shock horror :D) just so I can browse the internet.
    Additional details -
I have tried resetting PRAM + NVRAM with no joy
While logging on (before it crashes), menu items (e.g. Airport, Battery Indicator, Facebook Notifier) all load up on the far right BEFORE the clock, which never happened before the problem, don't know if this will help isolate the problem, but its worth mentioning..
Don't really want to go down the fresh install route if possible, as I did this with leopard about 2 months before Snow Leopard was released

I noticed it some weeks after installing Snow Leopard, and didn't think much about it since I have a Wacom mouse, and the Wacom driver often has some little peculiarities at startup with the Mac OS--sometimes everything is perfectly ordinary, there will be an OS update and a little oddness shows up, the driver eventually gets updated and the oddness disappears until some other OS update, and so on. I just figured that was what it was until my brother asked about the missing the menu bar after startup, which reappears with a click. He doesn't use a Wacom mouse, but he does have some other 3rd party mouse. I don't know whether 3rd party mouse drivers are at fault or not. But it is not a problem with the SystemUIServer.....the entire menu bar is missing, not just a goof-up on the Spotlight end, where SystemUIServer is in charge of things. Since simply clicking the mouse brings the menu bar up I've never even bothered to check the logs to see if anything is noted there.

Mac book takes about 10 minutes to start up and all applications "unexpectedly quit" even before they open. What did I do???

are you using sample base instruments in those projects a lot using exs or kontakt? when paths to samples get messed up for some reason it can result in along waiting times each time a project is loaded.
lately my kontakt samples get loaded without any sign of activity. if it is a large orchestral score i see a dead screen for quite a while before suddenly everything pops up and is ready to work with. i recall seeing progress bars or similar things in the past though...
repair permissions and defragging (idefrag) may help as well.
btw. i can drink as much coffee as i want late at night, even five minutes later i can sleep well. seems i am immune. but right now i am also having plenty of hardware issues to deal with so that's a good thing i guess...!

  • Applications Unexpectedly Quit when trying to print

I am trying to print from a iMac G4800 to a Lexmark E322(usb). It's running 10.4.9 and am current on updates but everytime you try to print (word, email, text edit) the application unexpectedly quits.
I've repaired permissions and have updated the Lexmark driver too.
Any ideas on what else I can try? Our school nurse uses this computer and needs to print out many forms and logs, etc. each day.
    Thanks!

Try Reset Printing System, a menu choice in Printer Setup, then restart the Mac, then Add the printer again and try it.

  • Can't get remote cluster machine to encode video - getting 'Media Server application unexpectedly quit'

    Hi
Using Compressor 4 / Apple QuarterMaster admin etc, I have set up a Cluster and it works well to Share > Export Using Compressor Settings.  That took some doing, and I'm happy that it works.
If I do all my processing in the foreground, or alternatively in the background on my FCPX computer, ie without running or using any cluster in the background, it all goes well.  Quick, error free.
If I activate the cluster and only put my local machine's compressor services into it, and then send my compressor batch to the cluster, it works perfectly well.  But that defeats the point of having a cluster.  I want the remote machine to do all the work so my local machine doesn't slow down.
Unfortunately, if I add the remote machine's services into the cluster, the encoding always fails with 'Media Server application unexpectedly quit' in the error log.  I know that the cluster is distributing segments of the file to the remote machine - this can be seen in the Share Monitor, but they never get processed and sit there waiting until I get the error message.
The remote machine is a modern 4G core 2 duo MacBook. It's never been used for this before.  It has Compressor 4 and the Pro Apps Update installed and both appear to work.  Both machines are running 10.6.8.  The remote machine has Compressor services initialised in Apple QMaster sharing.  The QMasterAdmin sees these services.  They are accessible over Bonjour and appear in the Cluster.  Compressor services from both the local and the remote machine are configured exactly the same way.  The same QT codecs exist on both machines.  I've restarted, shift-restarted, etc etc.
So I am at a loss here.  The remote machine just won't compress anything it is sent.
Any ideas?  Must both have FCPX installed?
Anyone actually got a remote machine in a cluster to work with Compressor 4?  I can't figure it out.
    Chris.

    OK... finally sorted it out.
It's a bug, as far as I can tell.
Any job entered directly into Compressor 4 in the normal Compressor manner will be successfully rendered by any working cluster from any machine that can access the cluster.  That's good.  It means that the underlying distributed processing model works well.
HOWEVER - any job forwarded to a Compressor 4 cluster that includes non-local compressor services (ie compressor services not resident on the same machine), using Share > Export Using Compressor Settings direct from FCPX will fail.
To confirm this bug, I made a cluster on a remote machine.  It was a dual core machine, so I enabled 2 compressor services on that machine, and that's all the cluster was.  Simple.
I then manually entered a video file (ProRess 422 720p) into Compressor on the remote machine.  I did this by physically setting up new job using the compressor user interface.  A bog standard ProRes422 720p file rendered fine this way on the remote machine.  As did anything else I gave it.  Good.
Then on my main machine, I opened Compressor and made a job based on the same file and settings, and sent it to the remote machine's cluster.  No problem at all!  Great!
So now I know that both Compressor versions, and the clustering model, are working fine.  In fact I can send all sorts of files to the cluster, from any other version of compressor, and have them processed on the remote machine, and get the result back on my desktop later on.  Excellent.
But, if I try put this same file into a FMPX timeline, and go Share > Export Using Compressor Settings.... and select a cluster with remote (non-local) compressor services, it does not work.  Rendering the video segments on the remote machine times out and fails, every time.  It doesn't matter what file format I use, it just fails.
    So it's a bug.
From what I can tell, Final Cut Pro X somehow messes up the Share > Export Using Compressor settings where the cluster includes non-local compressor services, causing all jobs to fail.  The same Share > Export Using Compressor Settings will work quite happily if all the services on the cluster are on the same machine as FCPX, or if the job is sent to This Computer in the background.  But any attempt to send files to a cluster using any remote services will fail.
I hope this saves some people from wasting as much time as I have!
One workaround is to export to ProRes then put this file manually into Compressor, sending the job to the remote cluster.  This is a two step process with a large intermediary ProRes file.  If one goes Export as QuickTime movie, generating the intermediary file prevents further FCPX work being done.
To get the intermediary in the background one could use  Share > Export Using Compressor Settings via either This Computer, or to a cluster using only local services.  Then once complete, manually add it to a compressor job.
So this is a FCPX bug as far as I can tell.
    Chris.

  • TS3854 Media Server application unexpectedly quit

    Hi,
when i use Final Cut Pro 10.0.6 the below mwssage appears
i cannot save the project in any format and i have updated all versions
    Media Server application unexpectedly quit
what does this mean??? and what to do??
    Please Assist

Well, I'm not sure what exactly is going on yet, but here's what I've done:
I followed these steps for the "Unable to connect to background process" issue that Compressor sometimes has, even though that wasn't the issue. It sort of made sense to do, though, because when I reinstalled FCP and DVDSP, I did DVDSP4 first, then FCP HD 4.5, which predates DVDSP 4 by a generation (I think). So it was possible that Compressor got screwed up in the install...still hard to tell, though.
So then I just tried a bunch of videos in Compressor. After several various attempts, it appears that *perhaps, maybe* it was just a bad custom preset. The built-in 150 min 2-Pass is currently working away on the video, and is 10% into it, which is 10% more than the custom preset ever got.
So, I'm gong to let that encode, and then try to make the preset again, from scratch, and see I can figure anything out. The only thing different between the 150 min 2-Pass preset and my version of it was the addition of a Gamma Correction filter. So, who knows...
If anyone knows anything else, please make a post.

  • Media Server application unexpectedly quit??

    Greetings All,
I am trying to export from FCPS to compressor using a cluster created with Qmaster. In the cluster there are 2 machines. One computer is set up as services only and the other is set with services and cluster controller. When Batch monitor comes up I get the following Error. Failed: Host [hostname.local] Media Server application unexpectedly quit. Have I set up the cluster wrong? what might cause this error??
    Thanks

  • IChat - Application unexpectedly quit error after Leopard upgrade

iChat was working fine until the installation of Leopard - now I get "Application unexpectedly quit..." error with an option to "ignore", "send error script to Apple", etc. This happens all the time now, so cannot use ichat at all. I've looked to re-install the iChat component of Leopard using Pacifist software, but this does not help. I've looked at the various discussion topics in this forum but I still cannot seem to get to an answer that works. Any ideas?

Without launching iChat from the DOCK click and Hold the icon and then select Show In Finder.
When that window opens click and hold the title of the Window
Where does the Path say you are ?
It should read Applications, your Hard Drive Name and possibly the Computer name.
It should not mention anything about a Previous System (I suspect it does in fact do this)

  • Application Unexpectedly Quits - Suspect JNI

We have a Java application that communicates with a spectrophotometer via USB - the device and USB support is through a third party JAR that uses JNI. While the application runs on both Windows and Macintosh, often the application unexpectedly quits on the Macintosh, usually invoking the Apple "do you wish to send the crash results to Apple" dialog.
Inspecting our own application log files we can't see any reason for the application quitting. Sometimes we are using he spectrophotometer, sometimes not. Inspecting the Apple Java crash logs, more than half the time they indicate a problem in the native interface. The problem seems to have started after moving from JSE 1.3 to JSE 1.4.
Unfortunately there is not enough information afterwards to indicate what the problem is. Are there tools or techniques for investigating this problem further? We seen to be at an impass and need to ship the Application soon to customers.

While running the Application on the Mac I used the
    following VM options: -verbose:jni -Xcheck:jni
I noticed the following message a lot of times
Warning: Calling other JNI functions in the scope of
    Get/ReleasePrimitiveArrayCritical or
    Get/ReleaseStringCritical
Is this something I should worry about? If it was me I would.
    What does it
mean exactly? You are using a piece of the java heap that has been locked down. And then you are calling other java methods expecting them to work normally. I believe those specific methods warn against that.
The following link repeats what I said....

  • Failed: Media Server application unexpectedly quit

    Hi!
I have a 2.5 hour movie which I have sent to Compressor to convert using the DVD Best Quality 150min preset. However, after 2 tries (leaving it rendering voer night) I keep getting the message- Failed: Media Server application unexpectedly quit.
I got the audio track perfect, but the video track seems to be the problematic one.
What does this mean? It is very frustrating, especially i am on a tight deadline now. What did I do wrong?

Well, I'm not sure what exactly is going on yet, but here's what I've done:

  • Getting a "application unexpectedly quit" notice after successful quits.

Any advice is gratefully received. I've recently upgraded my OS from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3 (and updated to 10.4.5) and have run permission repairs, and generally everything is peachy.
However, when I quit (successfully) from iMovie (the main victim at the moment), I get a "application unexpectedly quit" notice. This is incorrect - the app. didn't quit unexpectedly, the work is being saved properly and there doesn't appear to be any problems in the actual running of the application. It may be a 'rogue' warning, but it is unsettling. Any ideas, solutions or general words of comfort? Thanks.

    You're welcome Bongomal,
Looks like you managed to get it working again.
I was typing a reply yesterday evening when my internet connection went down, so for what it's worth...:
    "Bongomal,
make sure you're looking at the Library folder inside your own home (user) folder ! Preference files are created automatically the first time you launch an application. If you delete/rename them, a new, default .plist file will be saved the next time you start iMovie. There's no guarantee it will solve your issues, yet resetting an application's preferences is one of the fist steps to try.
You've already repaired permissions using Disk Utility.
Try running the periodic system maintenance scripts, which are generally taken care of automatically, using a system utility like YASU or Terminal: Log in from an administrator account, open Terminal (Applications/Utilities), type "sudo periodic daily weekly monthly", hit return and enter your password, return. You're done after a few minutes when you see a new command line (computer :~ user$ ) appear.
If that doesn't do it, open System Preferences → Accounts and create a new user account for testing purposes only. Log in and see what iMovie does.
    Good luck!
I'm not aware of any Tiger related issues with iMovie 4.01. I've actually used it a week ago due to a bug in iMovie 05 and 06 regarding play through mode with digital camcorders.
Archive and install has proven to be just a little bit more reliable than the standard update method, since you're actually creating a new System folder rather than just updating corresponding files. If we can't isolate your problem at all, Archive and Install along with deleting some preference files should do it for sure. "

  • Applications Unexpectedly Quitting and Scary Gray 'Restart' Screen shows up

    hi,
I recently started having several issues with applications unexpectedly quitting. There doesn't seem to be any particular pattern, just random crashes. Anything from Finder to AppleWorks to Adobe Acrobat Reader and Final Cut Pro. My computer also came up with the scary gray "you must restart your computer" screen 3 times this afternoon.
It seems to have just started today, so I went into Console to see what might be causing the problem. Here is a portion of the near the beginning of the log I found interesting:
2008-11-11 20:09:02.582 Backup Engine 3[205] MaxBack Engine MaxBackEngineController-- MoreSecCopyHelperToolURLAndCheckBundled #1
2008-11-11 20:09:02.829 Backup Engine 3[205] MaxBackEngineController-- calling MoreSecExecuteRequestInHelperTool
2008-11-11 20:09:02.829 Backup Engine 3[205] MaxBackEngineController-- back from MoreSecExecuteRequestInHelperTool
2008-11-11 20:09:02.829 Backup Engine 3[205] MaxBack Engine Error: An error occurred: 0xd (13)
    Workaround Bonjour: Unknown error: 0
    Nov 11 20:09:10 Christophers-G4 crashdump[206]: Finder crashed
launchd[92]: com.seagate.notificationexec.plist: 8 more failures without living at least 60 seconds will cause job removal
launchd[92]: com.seagate.notificationexec.plist: respawning too quickly! throttling
launchd[92]: com.seagate.notificationexec.plist: 7 more failures without living at least 60 seconds will cause job removal
    launchd[92]: com.seagate.notificationexec.plist: will restart in 10 seconds
I also found a very strong pattern later in the log and it continues as long as the computer is running. This message appears about every 15 seconds.
"launchd[92]: com.seagate.notificationexec.plist: 6 more failures without living at least 60 seconds will cause job removal"
I don't know if this is causing the crashes, but it seems to be the only thing happening in the log when my computer is just sitting. I assume it has something to do with a Seagate 250 external USB drive I have connected to my computer. I got it in January but the problem seems to have just started today. The drive came with software called "Drive Manager". I've had it installed in my computer since January. The only function of the software seems to be backing up the hard drive, and I really don't have a use for it. I'm thinking uninstalling it might solve the problem, but I have to find an uninstaller first. (MaxBack (listed in the log) seems to be a part of the Seagate software as well.)
Just as a side note: I've been having DVD verification failures when I burn DVDs and audio bumps while exporting video to tape in Final Cut Pro. (i even got a gray 'restart' screen while exporting in Final Cut) I don't know if these issues are related to the crashing or not but they are happening at about the same time.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. This is my main computer and I really don't want it crashing on me all the time. Thanks!
    Christopher

Boot from your installer disc and run Disk Utility. Verify your internal drive. I would hesitate about repairing it until you have made a backup of your files since on rare occasions repairing it makes it worse. If all is clear then make your backup. If it reports errors I would do a backup, then re-boot from your installer disc and this time try repairing. If it repairs the drive then you might want to do the backup again of the repaired drive. See, I'm doing this incrementally. Maybe a bit mroe effort but you're covering your bases as best you can. If DU can't repair your drive the other thing is to buy a copy of Diskwarrior and run that.
Here's my standard "uninstall applications post":
Most small programs can have all their components contained within an app package. After running, the program will likely install a file in Preferences (either in your user area, or the main preferences, or both). Dragging a program and its preferences to the trash is often all that is needed, or you can use a program like AppDelete to delete these programs. However, most app delete programs will not have an inventory of what is installed -- they just look for files that are clearly associated with the app you are deleting.
Try to find files associated with the application you want to delete by using Spotlight, Finder, or EasyFind (free and generally highly recommended) to search for the application's name. Favorite folders for files to be installed are:
    /Applications/
    /Library/Preferences/
    /Users/YourName/Library/Application Support/
    /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences
where YourName refers to the user name when you login and the / indicates the series of folders down from your main drive.
A few programs may set login items to start automatically when your computer starts or a specific user logs in. These items are located in: /Library/StartupItems/ or /Users/YourName/Library/StartupItems/ To edit these, go to your account set up in System Preferences, login items tab, select the item(s) and a "-" to remove.
More involved programs (e.g., Office) may install bits and pieces all over the place, like fonts, libraries, etc. The software installer may have an uninstall option, or there may be a separate uninstaller for these. In bad situations you have to hunt around yourself.
Some programs install invisible files. You can use a utility like Onyx to toggle visibility on your computer and check for invisible files.
Sometimes programs install files (often hidden) not readily associated with the program and if you're worried about those the only thing to do is a scan before and after installing a program and see what has changed.
Check out the utility [AppDelete|www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/appdelete.html]. It will remove simple applications and most of their associated files.

  • When clicking the "Print" dialogue box..the application unexpectedly quits

I've just done a comple erase and install on my Mac G5 (v.10.4.7), because of a font conflict. I've reinstalled all applications and the newest printer drivers for both my HP printers :LaserJet 5000-GN and Color LaserJet 2550L.
When I go to print, and click on the print dialogue box in the application, the application unexpectedly quits. I can access the printers in other ways and print files so I know the printers are working properly. I just can't access the printers through the print dialogue box. This is true using Quark, Photoshop and Illustrator.
Is this an OS problem or a printer driver issue?
    Cyrene

Printer driver disks were for System 9. So I've downloaded new drivers from HP. I've been advised to repair permissions using something called "Cocktail" so will try that. Otherwise...I may have to attempt anothe erase and install. Yuck.
Any other thoughts are welcome. Thanks again!

  • Applications "unexpected quit"

Beginning yesterday morning, Safari, imail, view preview and view Mac Help all give me the box that says "unexpectedly quit" and will no longer lauch. I'm guessing since its affects multiple apps that it's a system thing. Can anyone help? I didn't change anything that I know of and have had no problem prior to yesterday. iMac, OS 10.4.11

    Welcome To  Discussions carlnjo!
Exactly which model iMac is it?
    What is the Processor speed?
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
What peripherals do you have connected? A keyboard, mouse, printer, external drive or modem, router, etc?
Are you able to startup from the system install disc to run Repair Disk?
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, on the Menubar at the top of the screen, choose Utilities from the Installer contextual menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number. Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.
8.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
9.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
10.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
11.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.
    Have you run Repair Permissions?
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP, until the only messages reported, are listed here Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.4.x, authored by Michael Conniff.
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".
Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
Depending on Mac system usage habits, it is a general recommendation, to keep 10% to as much as 20%, of the Total capacity, available at all times.

Have you ever run any routine Maintenance procedures, as suggested in the articles linked to below?

Maintaining Mac OS X, authored by Dr Smoke
Is the Mac shutdown overnight, or does it run 24/7?
If you turn the Mac off nightly, the Background Maintenance Tasks, are never run.
These can also be run, using a Third-Party utility, or manually using Terminal, to run the CRON Commands.
    I use MacJanitor, when necessary.
INSTRUCTIONS TO RUN CRON MANUAL COMMANDS
    Quit all applications/programs.
Navigate to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Double click on Terminal, to open.
    At the prompt, type:
    sudo periodic daily
    Press Return.
Enter your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
This will execute the daily script that is sheduled to run every night.
When completed, repeat this procedure, but change the command to:
    sudo periodic weekly
This one rebuilds a database or two, and usually takes somewhat longer to complete. It is scheduled to run once a week.
    Repeat again, with command:
    sudo periodic monthly
Or they can all be run in one pass, which is preferable, with this command:
    sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
When the tasks complete, and return to the prompt, you may quit Terminal.
Restart the Mac, and again run Repair Permissions.
