Can you apply a template to an existing document that has no template?

Pages Templates can not be applied to existing documents in the way that you propose. They are basically sample documents.

Hi vmugdha,
With FrameMaker 6/7/8/9 you can update existing formats.
That means, format names did not change, only their defnition.
You do this with File | Import | Formats.
Helpful is here e.g. Rick Quatro's ImportFormatsSpecial:

When also format names changed, you need something which maps old formats

How to update/reload a template in an existing document?

We have over 20 indesign document that needs to include the changes that we have done to our template. They were previously done with the old version of the template, but we need to update them with the new template. What is the suggested way of proceeding with this?

Import a master from another document
You can import masters from another InDesign document (any version) into the active document. If your destination document contains master pages that have different names from any master page in the source document, those pages and their document page overrides will be unchanged.
In the Pages panel menu, choose Load Master Pages.
Locate and double-click the InDesign document containing the master pages you want to import.
Determine what should occur if a loaded master has the same name as a master in the current document.Choose Replace Master Pages if you want the masters from the source to override the destination document’s masters with the same names. If your destination document does not have any overridden items, it is safe to Replace Master Pages on import.

Cannot open new or existing documents in Pages

This has never happened before. I want to type a letter and cannot open a new document in pages so tried opening an existing one and all it states is that "cannot open document" - no reason given. I recall having iwork preloaded onto computer at time of purchase order. Cant remember the Operating system so am guessing - this computer was bought October 2010. I am a basic user and still finding my way around an Apple. Am self taught and elderly so please excuse me if sounding dumb.

When Pages is open, trigger the menu item :
Pages > About Pages
This way you will get a window telling which is the application's version.

Can I open existing documents in Pages on iPad

I emailed a word document to myself from a windows computer. When I open it on my Mac Pro and iPad some of the alignments are distorted. I tried opening it in the Documents app on my iPad and it still looks distorted. Is this simply because I'm trying to open a word document on this non-word computer/iPad? Is there a way to open this document, whether in an app or not, so that the word document looks like it does on the windows computer? And if I open it in Pages or Documents app, can I edit it to fix the issues?

Yes you can open it in Pages. You can format it Pages as well. You can also save the document as a Word doc, PDF, Pages or an ePub file.
I take it that you don't have Pages and are trying to make a decision on whether to plunk down the money for it or for another WP app.
There are 6 preinstalled resume templates in the iOS pages app as well. I know that you have already gone to all of the work of setting up the resume in Word, but worst case scenario, you could always choose one of those.
I am not trying to paint a picture of gloom here for you. There will always be some formatting issues going from a Word file to. Pages or any of the other WP iPad apps, but Pages should work just fine for your word processing needs. There are other apps that are supposedly even more compatible with Word files. Take a look here for more ideas.

Change existing document title in Pages

I don't see how to edit/change title of an existing document in Pages.

Command-click its name in the window's title bar, click on the folder enclosing it, close it, and change its name in the Finder.

Applying CT template to uploaded documents

I have a document library with multiple content types.
Each CT has a custom document template with logos, doc properties, text, etc.
If I create a New Document from the Ribbon, the document gets the CT metadata
AND the document template.
If I upload a document to the library, I can assign a CT to the document so as to get the metadata, but no document template is set. It remains the default blank word doc - no logo, etc.
Can uploaded documents not have the document template assigned that is with the Content Type?

By design, template will work only when you create new document, it won't be applied to existing document.
You could copy and paste existing content to New Document template.
You may also ask the question in Office forum and check if there is any way to apply template on existing template. Here is a similar thread for your reference:

How do I apply a Design Template to an existing project, and...?

I made some customizations to one of the design templates and saved those changes. I want to have these changes applied to existing and new projects, how do I get this to happen? Also when making the customizations to the design template, I seem to be able to only make certain changes. For Example: The first item is a TEB - I am able to change the success and failure caption boxes but only in regard to style, I can't seem to change the text. It reads "Type success text here." I want that to always read "Correct!" so how can I implement this without have to change the text for each item in the project?

After you create your design template, you apply it by opening a project that you wish to apply the template to. Then you click the Window menu and choose Design Template.
This opens the Design Template panel. From there you choose a template to apply to your project.

Indeed you may only apply the visual characteristics. The text is influenced by editing the object later in the project.

I don't think you will be able to influence this. Not with a Design Template. What you can do is create a Project Template with the captions pre-configured. Then you could copy and paste as needed to accomplish it.
You should add your voice to others that wish to see more flexibility with configuring defaults such as what you are asking. You do this via the Wish Form.

Issue with Apply A Template

Hi -
I have a template called index.dwt created for my site, below is the top code from the template. I've created a new file called index.html and tried to apply index.dwt but somehow it's applying old code not in the template anymore. I've removed any file that have that old code listed below, so I have no idea how the template is applying the old code that from what I can tell doesn't exist in a file anymore anywhere in site. It almost seems like it's cached because I did a preview of the site in chrome but I've restarted my desktop and it still populates the old code.

Unable to see existing documents in a Custom Sharepoint 2013 Document library while saving a document directly in it using explorer mode

Hi,
We have a SharePoint 2013 doc library based on a custom template, which has been migrated from 2010.
We are unable to see existing documents in a Document library created using this template while saving a document directly in it using explorer mode, However we can save files and even see them in explorer mode, only when we try to save a new document there
directly, we cant see the old docs.
All the OOB libraries work fine.
Below is the normal behavior while saving a file, however nothing comes up when saving on this custom template library

Changing Page Size and Margins for existing document

Hi, really new at using InDesign and have a question.
I have an existing document about 40 pages containing text and graphics.
I need to change the page size from the original 8x10 to 8.5x11 as well as change the left margin from 0.5" to 1"
If I simply change these in File>Document Setup and Layout>Margins will everything change and convert?
Or put another way will I have to move everything around on all the pages once the new sizes are input?

You may get different advice from someone else, but if you want to make a global change like this to an existing file, I think the easiest way is to use the Layout Adjustment feature which has been deprecated in favor of Liquid Layout, and is now hidden away in the Liquid Layout panel flyout menu.
In order for it to work, two things must be true BEFORE you make changes to the file: Layout Adjustment must be turned on, and the text frames must be fully snapped to the existing margin guides, so you may have to adjust the margins BEFORE you make other changes so they surround the frmaes with no gaps.
Once margins are correct and Layout Adjustment is enabled, you can change the page size in Document Setup, then go to your master page and from the Layout menu choose Margins and Columns and reset the margins to whatever you like. The change should be reflected in all pages to which that master is applied, and your frames snapped to the old margins should change size/shape to remain snapped to the new ones.

I applied a template to a page with SWFs and now that page does not play the SWFs. Why?

I applied a template to a page with SWFs and now that page does not play the SWFs (just a blank area where the SWF should be). When I detach the template it will play the flash file. This site will eventually be updated via Adobe Contribute. And I just discovered that when applying a template to a page that uses HTML datasets (Master/Detail),it no longer reads the Master/detail regions and displays a blank. Any thoughts?

Firstly, you shouldn't really 'apply' a template to a page, you should create a child page by going to FILE>NEW>Page from Template. Too many things can happen when applying a template the way you are doing it. eg:; editable and non-editable regions not matching up and being asked where to place these regions and in all likelihood, you end up with 2 or more of the same region.
When a swf file is inserted into a page, a corresponding Scripts folder is written automatically is stored in the root of the site - it is also linked to in the head of the document. What I believe is happening is that when you apply a template to the page, the Template has no idea that there is a swf file on the page and is not aware of the correct link to the Scripts folder. If you do a test and add the swf file to the template page itself, I bet that the links to the swf and the scripts folder are correct - because DW knows the correct path to the script file. Hence the reason the page probably works when you detach it from a template.

How to apply a template to a page uploaded using sftp?

I would like to upload the .html document with the appropriate template using sftp instead of applying the template using BC's back end.

You cannot apply/assign a template to a page via sftp. You'll need to action this via back-end or using DW. Since you prefer not doing this in the back-end DW extension would be the alternative.

Can I use FormsCentral when creating a form from existing document?

Hi,
I am trying to make a template in Formscentral. I want to use a picture with our corporate design for forms. I can change that in a PDF, but if I want to use that in FormsCentral, The picture is not paper wide (as it should), but leaves white margins an header and footer. But if I try to make a form and chose 'from existing document' I seem to not be able to end up in FormsCentral. What am I doing wrong?

How do I upload a PDF to the FormsCentral service? Wil I see that form then in My Forms or in the the standard templates list? I want to be able to re-use a collored PDF with no fields in it. I use this one to make several forms which will all look the same in the background.
