Arch servers to update or not to update?

Hi all,
I'm running two mirrored servers and wanted to know peoples opinions on server updates? Because Arch is updated frequently is it safe to constantly be updating my servers (once a day) or should it be something done like once a month; which might put me at risk to exploits.
Also does everyone update the kernel on their servers? I was thinking of updating one machine before the other just incase of a problem with the updates; opinions? ideas?

I'm updating my production server (internal) for two years now. Was using old IBM desktop, PIII 500Mhz, 64MB RAM, so probably there were less chances of hardware incompatibility. Was upgrading everything (kernel and all from current, extra). No GUI, base install, only ssh, iptables, mc, jre, kernel 2.6. I only had problems few times, when going from devfs to udev. But it was major change in system base, so it should cause some problems, especially for me, not an linux/arch expert really And moving to mkinitcpio, had to update my lilo config in a right way. So i dont remember of any problem caused by updates which was not my fault.

  • To update or not to update that is the question.....

I recently RMA my WRT54G V5 and hoped they would send me a V1,2 or 3...of course they didn't! Soooooo, I got another V5 POS and it has the older FW 1.06 or something like that. Should I update it to the 1.09 or not? I read somewhere that peopl said it is worse. My problem is my router is causing latency issues (slowing the data down)  I have 5Mb down and 1 Mb up. I only recieve 1.5 -2Mb when using the router. If I go direct port into the modem I get full 5Mb. I am so disgusted with Linksys that I will never buy another product from them-but either way I have to make the best of this POS. So should I update or not???? I did it on my last V5 and it didn't do a thing-infact it almost seemed to cause more issues.

this speed issue could also be a sync issue between the modem and router.....can u post the make, model and part number of the modem ?

  • Iphone ios6 update could not be updated an unknown error has occured 1602

    Hello,
So I have an iphone 4s, never had any issue until I tried updating to the new ios6 and shortly while it was applying the ios6 update, it stopped and gave me this error:
could not be updated an unknown error has occured 1602.
To which my Win 7 64 pc would not see it anymore, and itunes would not see it.  Went through what apple suggested removed everything and reinstalled itunes, did not work.  The only way I could get my iphone working was plugging into another pc running an older version of itunes and restore it.  Once done I went back to the original PC worked fine to sync, but when I tried yet again to update to IOS6 it crashed again.
I have spent way too much time on this, spent way too much money on apple products (still need to update another iphone, and ipad, an itouch and an iphone 5), I need this fixed, who can help?
    Image shows what happens:

"This error is caused by attempts to downgrade the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch's software. This can occur when you attempt to restore using an older .ipsw file. Downgrading to a previous version is not supported. To resolve this issue, attempt to restore with the latest iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch software available from Apple."
Taken directly from this article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275.
Plug your iPhone into iTunes and update it to the latest supported version, which is 4.2.1.

  • Software Update Server not supplying updates

    Greetings All,
I started a SUS on a running server. After configuring it I left it to download all the updates. The updates appear in the list displaying that they are copied and enabled. When I then "pointed" one of the local clients towards it and ran Software Update on the client machine it returned the message that there were no new updates relevant to the machine to be found on the server. Then I tried entering the path to the index file into Safari and it came up making me believe that there were no issues with the connection between the two machines. Since the server must be the problem I then tried this command on the server:
    +grep swupd /etc/swupd/com.apple.server.swupdate.plist > ~/Desktop/update.txt+
When inspecting the update.txt file I noticed that it was completely empty. After consulting the manual yet again I looked into the /usr/shar/swupd/ directory and found that there were a vast quantity of data in the /html/content/downloads/ directory. After reading a few posts I decided to delete all this data and allow the server to download them again. Now the directory contains 15GB but the issue remains. A grep of com.apple.server.swupdate.plist still comes up empty.
The only errors that I see in the log are these:
[Mon Sep 28 10:29:28 2009] [notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down
[Mon Sep 28 10:29:34 2009] [notice] Apache/1.3.41 (Darwin) configured -- resuming normal operations
[Mon Sep 28 10:29:34 2009] [notice] Accept mutex: flock (Default: flock)
Any ideas? Have I missed something very obvious?
Thank you for your time and effort on this forum!

I have been running Software Update Server since a few days after the Mac Mini Server came out. It really helps the other macs in my household get their updates fast - when it works.
After "a while", the clients stop seeing updates - all at the same time. So, it's not a client problem. The thing that no one else has pointed out is that the "Your software is up to date." message on the client is abnormal.
In a normal up-to-date client, the "*Your software is up to date.*" modal dialog rolls down from an empty list of updates.
In this failure case, the modal dialog rolls down from the "*Software updates are available for your computer. Do you want to install them?*" window. This suggests (to me) that the Software Update client saw some indication that an update was available, but later decides not.
Since this is hard to describe, I've taken a few pictures:

  • To update or not to update?

I've seen enough posts about problems after updating the iPhone software that I've not updated mine. If it ain't broke don't fix it, right? I also realize that most people update with no problem and people post when they have a problem. I'm using 1.1.1. Am I missing out on some great bells and whistles by not going for 1.1.4?

    SimonJester753,
A lot of times when people come to Apple Discussions it is because they are having an issue with an Apple product. Other of us who stick around are here because we like to help other people.
As such this is not a good representative sample of all users out there. I would probably say somewhere around 4 out of 5 of the people posting to discussion have or have had an issue with an Apple product. However, since it is a technical support venue, that is to be expected.
Posts here are not everybody who has or had a problem, but neither are they everybody who has or has had a product that has not had a problem.
Somebody made the analogy a while back trying to poll here for a chance of having a problem, is like surveying at a urgent care clinic for health information, and extrapolating that to all people in a town.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • App store updates will not download / update

I have four updates for applications available in the App store. If I click on Update for each or all, the App Store indicates it is updating, but the gear wheel just spins and the updates never download or install. Can't seem to find a solution. I tried repairing disk permissions and such, no joy. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I would try with some basic troubleshooting....
    - restart your computer
    - verify that you are connected to the internet, by launching safari
    - if you are connected, quit all open applications, then only open the Mac Apps store
    - try to install just one software update
NOTE - when connecting wireless, you are going through a router.  The router may have some of the "ports" blocked that are required to get these updates, and therefore connecting to the internet direct wire, would be my next step in troubleshooting

  • Updater will not install updates from Firefox

Windows XP, click on Help, About Firefox, Check for updates. They download. Then I click on Apply update. A window appears saying "updater.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." Then I may choose whether to send the error report.
There has been no update. It will not install.
Why does this happen? The only way I can get updates from Firefox is to go to Mozilla.com and download.
I tried the troubleshooting tips in Firefox Help and nothing worked.

I should have explained that this has been going on for a long time. When I first installed Firefox several years ago their updates installed fine.
Then they no longer would install, starting in July 2007 when they downloaded Firefox 2.0.0.4. After they installed that, Firefox would not even open, and I got an error message. I had to uninstall and reinstall.
I figured out over time that I would have to go to their website and download the updates myself, each time they announced that an update needed to be installed. It would then install fine. And Firefox would open as it should. This has been the case for a long time.
So it does work out doing it this way. It is something of a nuisance, and it would be nice if the updates worked smoothly and automatically, as they used to.
I thought this might be some problem others users have had and would know how to fix it.
    Thank you.

  • Updater is not finding updates

I have CS6 installed on my iMac and Macbook Pro.
both run mountain lion and both were installed the same way using the cloud installer on the same day.
The Macbook pro gets notification of patches, the imac does not. even if I manually select updates in the apps the updater reports no updates found. So I have to manually search and download patches.
    Any ideas ?

  • To update or Not To update: MBP 3.1 Late-2007

    Ok all;
I've read about the Mail issues and the ethernet port issues. I am about to frinally upgrade to Windows 7 Pro on my bootcamp but I wondered if I should go ahead and update to 10.9. I do use Mail a lot and have a gmail address linked to it. Also, I have found that XP is suddenly performing VERY poorly, which is why I am trying to upgrade. Any news on this? Any and all advice is welcome
    Here are my specs:

I suspect that Mavericks would not perform all that well on your 7 year old Mac, unless you have a good amount of RAM in it and maybe upgrade the hard drive to a SSD.
Also it doesn't make much sense to me that Windows would work any better on your mac with OSX upgraded; you're still just rebooting into the windows partition.
If your MBP is the 13 inch, it won't run Mavericks: OS X Mavericks: System Requirements

  • IPhone4 16Gb - to update or not to update - that is the question!

I have an iphone4 16Gb and presently running iOS 4.3.5 (8L1) - and so far have avoided iOS5 largely because of the reduced battery life I keep hearing about everywhere!
My battery life has always been fantastic on this phone yet a friend of mine has the 4S running 5.1.1 and it has some very cool features iOS5 that I want!
I am loathe to update however for fear of suffering reduced battery life.
I never have WiFi on unless needed - never leave GPS on and never use Push  Notifications.
I have taken every precaution on energy sucking and preserving my battery life so far and it is very good and I am well chuffed with it to be honest.
    What are your thoughts?
Have you upgraded from 4.3.5 to 5.1.1 on the 4 (not the 4S as that is different architecture anyhow) - if you have did it affect battery performance please?
    Cheers for reading.

    Dead useful.
OK then - love the iphone - it's awesome.
    There

  • HP Update Does Not Install Updates

I recently installed my HP Photosmart D7460 on my new HP-Pavilion FT863AV-ABA d5100t using the most recent D7460 download file. Now I regularly get a message (Once a week automatic update) stating I need to install HP Update - Security Update, Windows Help and Support Update and Critical Update for HP Photosmart Essential. These updates are downloaded but the Installation is cancelled for each one. How do I stop getting false weekly update notices.

you could start by uninstalling the HP Update program from Add/Remove Programs.

  • IPad 2 - to update or not to update, that is the question!

Currently my iPad 2 is running on iOS 5.1. A lot of the new apps (YouTube, etc) only work with 6 or more. Should I upgrade to 6.1.3?  Will it affect battery?  What are all of the pros and cons, and what is the best decision?
    Thanks!

Just do it. It makes no sense to run out of date software.
