Archiving in Time Capsule

I know this question was made in different ways, still I did not found a direct reply. I just got the Airport Time Capsule. Thought I could archive documents beyond the backup. Can I drag and drop folders directly to the TC? Thanks

Yes, you can do that.
If you simply use it to archive that is fine.. but be aware you do not have two backups.. you have just one.. because both are on the same hard disk.
If you then intend to delete the documents from the computer.. please don't do that.
You then have no backups at all.
It can be messy if you load a TC with data and TM backups..

• Assistance on archiving w/ Time Capsule

In the next few months I'll be getting a new MB. My first project will be to get all of our digital video archived. Everything is on mini-dv tapes. My question is whether putting all of this on Time Capsule would be the way to go. OR is it more archival to burn everything to DVD.
Thanks for any insight or ideas.

There are pros and cons to either of those two method as regards "archival storage". My suggestion for what its worth is that at minimum you burn everything to DVD.

• Self archiving the Time Capsule as possible ?

Hello,
I want to archiving my TC with Airport Utility on external HD.
But I want to automate the process daily !
Do you know an application, script (automator) to automate the archiving ?
Thinks,

No it isn't possible... via the TC itself.
The only archive ability is to copy the whole disk anyway.
You would need to setup the USB on your computer.. and use a backup software which can do incremental backups.. from the TC back to the computer. This would be extremely slow but if you don't change much over time it will work ok. Look at the usual backup programs for Mac, except Time Machine which cannot do it from network drive.
That is why a proper NAS with Rsync is more in your needs to do this sort of thing than a TC which is overall a router with a hard disk inside. No servers no nothing really.

• How to restore Time Capsule from Archive?

Ok, I understand how to archive the Time Capsule Disk (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1281).
But how do you restore it?
Thanks in advance!

Copy the file back by dragging it to your time capsule hard drive.  Take a look at this link, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427

• Restoring entire disk from Time Capsule archive?

I've archived my Time Capsule to an external drive. Is it possible to restore an entire disk from the archive? On a more general note, just what good is the archive if one can't use Time Machine with the external archive disk mounted on a Mac?

It should be. Connect it directly to your Mac, and see #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
On a more general note, just what good is the archive
If your TC is too small to back up your Mac, you can use the "archive" function to move the backups to a larger drive, then back up to it through the Time Capsule, instead of to the TC's internal HD.
Or, if you're using the internal HD for other data, it's a good way to back it up, since Time Machine can't.

• HT1281 Archiving Time Capsule Disk in Lion

A feature where you could 'archive' a Time Capsule disk seems to have been removed in Lion (10.73) or Airport Utility (6.0), anyone know how to do similar thing in these newer versions?
Do love it when apple removes features!..

The feature is in the real utility.. 5.6 not in the toy version .. ie 6.0 in Lion.

• Time Capsule archive/HD problem

I have just purchased an Iomega 2TB external HD to use for archiving my Time Capsule. However, when I connect it to the Time Capsule, Airport Utility tells me there's a disk problem with the external HD.
When I reconnect it to my Mac and run Disk Utility, it tells me the HD is fine (and, indeed, it seems to work fine too). Even if I erase and reformat the external HD (Mac OS extended/journaled), the same problem reoccurs when I connect it to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
Ideas?

Problem solved.. I had to reformat the disk again with the partitions set to 1, not "current"

• Setting up Time Capsule as an archive for a time capsule?

Hello,
I have a Time Capsule that I use as an external drive where I save and share photos/videos files across multiple Macs. It's great for moving files off of the Macs since we have thousands of photos/files and they are not small files. I'm on MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5.
Since the primary Time Capsule (1.9 TB) has data I don't want to lose, I want to archive the Time Capsule content to another Time Capsule (2TB).
I have AirPort Utility Version 6.3.1. I've connected the archive Time Capsule to the primary Time Capsule via a USB connector, which is per the AirPort instructions.
In AirPort Utility, I go into the primary Time Capsule and select Edit. I select Disks within the Editor. I then click on the Archive Disks… button. "Destination", however, says "No AirPort disks available." So, I'm not able to select the secondary Time Capsule as the archive drive. I've read some pages about disk formatting and the disk needing to be unencrypted, but I connected the secondary Time Capsule to my Mac and did not find a way to identify or change the disk format or encryption option.
What do I need to do to get the second Time Capsule set up to be the archive drive for the primary Time Capsule that has the photos and other files?
Thanks for your assistance.

I have AirPort Utility Version 6.3.1. I've connected the archive Time Capsule to the primary Time Capsule via a USB connector, which is per the AirPort instructions.
Sorry but no.. the airport instructions are for a USB drive.. the TC is not now or ever accessible over USB.. it is a network drive.. you can plug a plain USB drive into it.. nothing more.
What do I need to do to get the second Time Capsule set up to be the archive drive for the primary Time Capsule that has the photos and other files?
You cannot change anything in the drive of a TC.. it is a network drive.. it is fully controlled by the firmware of the TC.
The only way you backup the TC is to use a software on the computer.. eg Carbon Copy Cloner will do it..
Have everything plugged in by ethernet.. mount both TC and you can make a backup from one TC to the other.
Archive will not work. that is only for a USB directly plugged into the TC.

• Any way to back up Time Capsule with Time Machine?

Im now using my time capsule as a normal external drive and using a drobo for time machine...but it isnt backing up everything on my time capsule. Is there a way of making it do so? Cheers

also its a bit of a pain when time machine is supposed to back up everything automatically
Time Machine does do a pretty decent job of backing up "everything" BUT it was only designed to do so from either the Mac's internal hard drive or an external USB/Firewire drive attached directly to it. Unfortunately, it was not intended to backup from other sources (including network drives.) Apple did include the Archive feature so that you could "archive" the Time Capsule as an additional backup safety measure.

• Kernel panic with wifi backup to Time Capsule

I have had no problem with wireless backup to Time Capsule until recently when I would consistently get a kernel panic during the backup. Is it a corrupt file? How would I isolate it? Or could it be a directory problem that DiskWarrior would fix? I can mount the backup image on my desktop OK.
I suppose I could erase my backup image on the Time Capsule, but I dont want to lose all that data. And if I did, what is the best way to archive that TIme Capsule backup image?
Thanks for any help.

First, Repair your backups per #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
If that doesn't help, here's a bunch of kernel panic info:
Apple Support - About kernel panic messages
Mac OS X Kernel Panic FAQ
The X Lab - Resolving Kernel Panics
Apple Developer - Technical Note TN2063: Understanding and Debugging Kernel Panics
Tutorial: Avoiding and eliminating Kernel panics

If your backups are ok, erasing the drive probably won't help. But to "archive" the backups, see this Apple article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1281

• Moving Time Machine backups from Time Capsule to External USB Drive

Hi all,
hoping someone out there can help I'm trying to move my time machine backups from my old Time Capsule to my external USB drive. I've already used the Airport Utility to "archive" my Time Capsule to a USB connected WD MyBook Elite.
Right now my WD MyBook Elite has both the archive, and recent (roughly 5 backups) of both my MacBook & MacMini. I've tried to follow the seemingly simple steps located in the FAQ's here Copy NETWORK backups to be used LOCALLY , but I cannot past step 1.
Right-click the new volume on your desktop or Finder sidebar and select Get Info. If the Ignore ownership on this volume box is checked, click the padlock at the lower right and enter your Admin password at the prompt. Then remove the check mark from the box and close the window.
There is no option to "Ignore Ownership" in Snow Leopard for the Spars Bundle or when expanding it to see its folders.
Any advice?
I'm basically trying to combine my backups to unit them into one seemless backup each for:
Mac Mini & MacBook.
Thank you in advance.

That's not referring to the sparse bundle you're copying FROM, but the new volume you just formatted on the USB drive you're copying TO.
If you didn't just format the partition, that box may not be shown -- it not, there's no problem and you don't need to do anything in that step.

Mac Mini & MacBook.
I'm not sure what you mean by that: you cannot combine the backups of two different Macs. You can put them both on the same hard drive, either in two different partitions, or, if any are going to be backed-up over a network, in a sparse bundle.
If I've misunderstood, please clarify exactly what you're trying to do.

• HT1281 What is the best way to restore a Time Capsule from an Archive disk?

I've done an archive of my Time Capsule and am going to store it off-site with my parents. What I'd like to know is, if my Time Capsule disk gets corrupt or needs reformatting, how can I restore its data from the Archive disk? Can I simply copy its files back onto the Time Capsule disk manually? And if so, will Time Machine recognise the sparseimages?

I think you would just keep archive as that.. if the TC was wiped then it is able start TM backup anew.. that is better and quicker than restoring a TC backup from the archive and then using TM to update it.. that would take forever. But yes, you should be able to connect the usb drive to a computer and copy the sparse bundle to the TC..

• Can I turn off Macbook while Time Capsule is archiving Time Machine backup to a USB drive?

My Time Capsule is archiving my Time Machine backup to a USB drive attached to it. I have initiated this process on my macbook (on the same lan with the Time Capsule), on which I am monitoring the archiving progress on the Airport Utility. Still almost a couple of days to go... Can I turn off my Macbook, or will that interrupt the process of archiving?

If LaPastenague is willing to do a "test", then we will all know more.
Opened my big mouth.
The archive is happening.. I turned off the computer it was setup from.. running Mavericks and latest utility once I got it started. I have been checking from v6 utility on Mountain Lion.. and it is excruciatingly slow. But is running.
I can check the progress but v6 utility is utterly and completely useless.. it continually shows the same numbers.
v5 utility does show it is crawling along.
v6
20min later..
Look, look, there is a tiny blue fleck in the progress bar!!
v5 utility shows the actual progress. Actually tells you total and amount backed up so far.
Amazing how advanced v5 utility is over v6.
The estimate of 10hours is probably correct at the present rate of progress. I suppose for 500GB, around 50GB/hr is about what we expect from TM backups etc.
I will post another picture in an hour and probably kill it then before I die of watching paint dry.

• External Drive won't mount to Time Capsule, Unable to Archive Disk

I use my Time Capsule as a network drive. I do not use it for Time Machine back-ups.
I need to backup the data on my Time Capsule disk. As far as I'm aware, the only way to back-up a Time Capsule disk is to connect an external drive to the Time Capsule's USB port; open AirPort Utility on your computer, navigate to the "Disks" tab, select "Archive Disk..." then choose the external drive in the "Destination" drop-down menu.  The problem is, my G-Drive mini doesn't seem to power up adequately when connected to the Time Capsule to mount. I can hear the drive making a quiet clicking noise but nothing else happens. The G-Drive never becomes visible under the "Disks" tab in Airport Utility.
The external drive is newly formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in Disk Utility. To connect the G-Drive mini to the Time Capsule I am using the USB cable that came with the G-Drive mini (port on back of drive says USB2.0). To power the G-Drive mini I am using a 12V, 2A AC Adapter (DC IN port).
The same configuration connected directly to my MacBook Pro mounts the drive without any trouble.
My hardware specs are: Time Capsule version 7.6.4; G-Drive mini GDM4 500 X; MacBook Pro 2.5GHz Intel Core i7
My software specs are: Lion OS 10.7.5; Airport Utility 6.3.1
Any help is much appreciated.

I don't have a G-Drive here to test, but 3 other USB drives show up just fine when I test with them connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule using a powered hub.....all at the same time or one at a time.
You might want to ask G-Drive support if their firmware supports a network USB connection.....not just a local or direct connection on a computer.
Otherwise, I'm stumped.

• Backup/archive Time Capsule to cloud?

Hi
I'm using a 4th generation Time Capsule to backup my two Macs via Time Machine. Is there a reputable cloud-based service that will automatically backup/archive only the Time Capsule?
thanks
Bill

... just to clarify - the Time Capsule is solely used for Time Machine backups and Wi-Fi provision. There is no "non Time Machine" user data on the device.
