Archiving Some RAW Files to JPEG

I am a photography enthusiast. I shoot everything in RAW, including some recent vacation pictures. To me, pictures that have no "artistic quality" are not really worth the extra space of saving in RAW format, once I've edited the raw file. However, I like to shoot in RAW due to the many advantages of the format.
As an example, I am never going to go back and re-edit the pictures of my Aunt's dog running along the beach. They are nice pictures, but I am not going to do anything with them aside from email them. I would like to keep a copy of the picture, along with a rating and metadata, but I don't want to keep a Raw image I will have no use for in the future. Keeping it as part of my Aperture libary is important, as I would like to stay orgainized.
Other posts I've read often refer to how cheap storage is these days, and you should never delete a RAW. But keeping thousands of RAWs I will never use again, in a library that is backed-up in 2 or 3 places, ends up getting a little expensive.
Ideally, I would like a project to look like this:
3, 4, & 5 Star photos kept in RAW, 1 & 2 Stars archived as a high quality JPEG, with no Raw file kept. So that could mean that 50% of the project would be JPEG, thus saving a tremendous amount of space.
Does anybody else do this? Any suggestions on how I could accomplish this?
Thanks in advance for any help/feedback you can provide.

Okay, I started playing around with this again, and I have kind have figured out a workaround, but it is tedious. Maybe somebody can help me make it easier, such as directions on how to create an Automator for this function, etc.
I don't usually have previews created for images automatically, so I "Update Preview" for the lower rated images, then I relocate the masters, and then I can delete the Raw master. What I am left with is an unreferenced Jpeg, with a rating of 1 or 2 stars and metadata. I can drag that over to a file on my desktop, and then re-import it. At that point, I have a high quality Jpeg master, that is a small file, with metadata, but no ratings. I then need to delete the original preview file.
I guess I could search a project by 1 and 2 rated pics, move those to another project, relocate those masters, delete RAW files, drag and paste Jpeg previews to a folder on my desktop, and them import the new jpegs into the orignal project, rate the jpegs 1 or 2 stars, and then delete the other project with the now unreferenced jpegs.
Anybody have ideas on making this easier.

Bridge will do the job. View > Sort > ByType. Then you can choose a group of one type and put the files in a separate folder.

  • Export a raw file to jpeg losses lens information

When I export a raw file to jpeg it losses the lens information.

    Ernie,
I have never paid attention to those tags on exported JPGs before, but I have recreated the scenario you described.  I have a Canon XTi, and my CR2 master files have about 12 more EXIF tags than the JPG versions.  Excluded in the JPG is the lens model.
However, the lens information for my camera is Canon proprietary tags.  That is, the general EXIF lens tags are not populated by my camera, so I would not expect them to be translated to regular EXIF tags by Aperture in a JPG.  I.e., I don't think Aperture will take metadata from one proprietary tag and put it in the place of another standard tag.  I suspect that is the same is true in your case.

  • Lightroom wont allow me to convert RAW file to JPEG

    Hi
I have tried and failed to export a RAW file to JPEG. When i highlight the RAW images to export i get a message, "source file are offline or missing". Does anyone know what this means and how can i save RAW images to JPEG?

I chose to move the images to a different file when they were exported to jpeg
Do you mean "I chose to move the images to a different file  FOLDER when they BEFORE I TRIED to export to jpeg"?
If so, this is an unnecessary step in Lightroom, that actually interferes with you using the photos in Lightroom. Best to not move the files any more using your operating system, and use Lightroom tools such as keywords, captions and other metadata to help you segregate and organize your photos.
To fix this problem now, either use your operating system to move the photos back to their original location, or use this: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm

  • HOW TO CONVERT RAW FILES TO JPEG RGB 8 BIT in iphoto

Can someone please tell me how to convert RAW files to jpeg RGB 8 bit in iphoto on an iMac?

How are you trying to "export to Mypics"? The only way to get a Raw out of iPhoto is to export with the Kind set to Original.

  • Can't separate raw files from jpegs in my ipad iphoto...

i recently purchased iphoto for my ipad but i cannot separate raw files from jpegs. i can see them all in my imac and save all files properly, but then i would like to erase raw files and keep only jpegs in my ipad but cannot find how to do it! any help? thank you!

yes I am importing pairs raw+jpeg using the camera connection kit. for what I understood reading the entire discussion you suggested, the solution is, after saving the files elsewhere, to delete the photos, but ipad would erase only raw files, leaving the jpeg. but I tried with one photo, and after deleting it, the photo was gone entirely!..
also, I still cannot see both pictures (raw and jpeg) in my ipad iphoto. i can see them in my imac iphoto, but it seems the program runs differently according to the device.. that would make things so much easier for everybody!
a button 'select all' would also be appreciated I am sure!

  • Hello- I am a Canon photographer.  I use Bridge (CS5) to process my raw files to jpegs.  I am taking on a second photographer who shoots Nikon (D800) and i am not currenty able to see or process his images.  Can you please help?  thankyou!

Hello- I am a Canon photographer.  I use Bridge (CS5) to process my raw files to jpegs.  I am taking on a second photographer who shoots Nikon (D800) and i am not currently able to see or process his images.  Can you please help?  thank you!

    According to Adobe:
    D800
    NEF
    6.7, 7.1
    4.1
    D800E
    NEF
    6.7, 7.1
    4.1
The fact that they have 2 versions of ACR means that initial support for the D800 was added in 6.7  but that complete support was finalized in 7.1 (the 4.1 in the chart is for Lightroom)
I'm not sure that this means there are missing features, but rather refinements and optimized settings were added in 7.1
    However, ACR 7.1 requires CS6.
As Dag mentioned, you can also use the latest version of DNG Converter to convert the D800 files to DNGs which will be able to be opened in older versions of ACR.
The DNG converter only works on folders of files, not individual files. So just select the folder and convert. All the files in the folder will be converted.

  • By accident I have some raw-files in iPhoto. I want to open them in PS camera raw. How do i do that?!

By accident I have some raw-files in iPhoto. I want to open them in PS camera raw. How do i do that?!

Export them back out: File -> Export, and set the Kind to Original
    Or,
You can also process your Raw with a 3rd Party app like ACR or Photoshop. But iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:
Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
    Now for the kludge:
You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.

  • I ran MacKeeper and demo'd my wife's iPhoto archive bigtime: RAW files appear corrupted and lotsa pix w/no thumbnails or "!" marks instead. Help!

I ran MacKeeper and demo'd my wife's iPhoto archive bigtime: RAW files appear corrupted and lotsa pix w/no thumbnails or "!" marks instead. Help!

Should I take it that recco'd means 'recommended'? Still have no idea what demo'd means in the context you use. I've often seem it as an abbreviation for 'demonstrate' but that makes no sense. The problem with idiosyncratic abbreviations is that other people don't understand them.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Convert batch of RAW files to JPEG

  • HT3825 so how do you convert the raw files to jpeg in iphoto?

how do you convert the raw files to jpeg in iphoto?

    Many thanks Barbara and dj_paige.
What I didn't mention is that I'm using PSE 5 with ACR 4.6, if its relevant.  I'm thinking of updating to the next version when its out in the hope that it will run with Windows 7 64 bit or I may go to Lightroom.
I can now see that I can batch convert a whole folder of files using "process multiple files" as dj_paige suggested but that is too many at once as the settings I choose won't be relevant for all the pics in the folder.
I was hoping to batch convert say 5 or 6 similar photos at a time with the same settings. I'm not quite clear what you're suggesting but I'm hoping that its a "work round" using two stages to achieve this.
I can't see a list of open files within ACR to ensure that they are all selected as you suggest.
What does clicking Open rather than Done mean?  Does this amend the original RAW file to the settings selected so that if I then "process multiple files" on the whole folder to convert from RAW to JPEG they will in fact have already been processed in smaller groups so I can convert without applying any further changes?
If so, what settings should I apply to "process multiple files" to ensure a simple conversion of file type rather than any further adjustments?
Any further help on this would be much appreciated.

  • I'm having trouble converting my RAW files to jpegs. Even though my RAW files are 90MB plus, the jpegs when converted are only around 6MB.  Am I doing something wrong?  Thanks,  A

    Dear Forum,
I realise this isn’t necessarily your problem, buy I’m having trouble converting my RAW files to jpegs.
Even though my RAW files are 90MB plus, the jpegs when converted are only around 6MB.
    Am I doing something wrong?

HHi Barbara, thanks for replying to my post.
No there's nothing wrong with the Jpegs, but I want to srart uploading images for sale in Alamy, but they say they must be a minimum of 17mb un compressed. Does that mean that at 6mb compressed from 90mb they'd be acceptable?
    thanks,

  • Why does aperture convert my raw files to jpegs when I import them from iPhoto?

Why does aperture convert my raw files to jpegs when I import them from iPhoto?

    It doesn't.
When you import  Raw to iPhoto the app makes a jpeg preview of the Raw automatically. When you import from iPhoto then Aperture brings over both versions.

  • How do you convert Raw files into jpeg.

I have never shot in Raw before and I have a huge project due tomorrow. I need help Asap. What is the easiest way to convert Raw files into jpeg, can Light Room convert the files. I have tried so many different ways and nothing seems to work.

It depends on the sofware you have.  ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) hosted by Bridge or by Photoshop can convert ("open") raw files, as can Lightroom.
However, not all camera models are supported by all versions of the software.  We need to know the make and exact model of the camera that generated the raw files to advice you further.
We can also assist you with the conversion through ACR hosted by Photoshop.
Olease note that there are dedicated forums for Lightroom, for Adobe Camera Raw and for Bridge.
Here's the list of which cameras are supported by each version of ACR.  Note that later versions supporte all camera models supported in previous versions of ACR.
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/407/kb407111.html
    Note that the latest version of ACR to run in CS4 is ACR 5.3;
    CS3 runs ACR 4.6;
    CS2 runs ACR 3.7;
    CS runs 2.4.

  • Am I able to convert RAW files to jpegs on Photoshop Elements?

Am I able to convert RAW files to jpegs on Photoshop Elements?

    Hi,
Sorry, but with the information you have given, the only answer I can give is "possibly".
Each camera model produces a slightly different raw format - even different models by the same manufacturer and even if they have the same extension (file type). The latest cameras will not be supported by older versions of Photoshop Elements although there is a converter which can help.
To give you a better answer, we need to know
    1) The camera make and model
    2) The version of Photoshop Elements that you are using
    3) The operating system that you are running on.
