Are files stored in icloud backed up by Apple?

Three related questions.
I've started storing some Pages and Numbers files in my iCloud account so I can access them on my iPad with the iOS versions of those two applications.
I use Time Machine on my Mac for backup, but if I have my only copy of a file saved on iCloud I want to known that Apple is backing up the files stored there. (1) Do they?  Is this documented somewhere?
(2) Or is there a cached copy of the files kept on Mac OS X that is backed up by Time Machine?
(3) Maybe both occur?

Here's what I have observed on my 10.8.3 system regards my questions about storing documents in iCloud from my Mac.
1. Talked to Apple Support and they told me that Apple does not backup iCloud documents.  Also said documents are not encrypted in iCloud.
2. I have found that there is a local cache of application associated documents kept in OS X on my Mac in ~/Library/Mobile Documents/.  Each application has a folder named like com~apple~<application name>; so Numbers documents are in ~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~Numbers/Documents.
The ~/Library/Mobile Documents/ is backed up by Time Machine.  So if Apple is indeed not backing up iCloud documents, the cached copy on my Mac and the Time Machine backup and my Crashplan cloud backup give me redundancy.
3. If I turn off Wi-Fi on my Mac and open Numbers I can open the files I put in iCloud and make changes.  When I reestablish Wi-Fi networking the changed file gets synced with iCloud.  So that works pretty much like Dropbox does.
I had some issues with one Numbers document not opening on my iPad (iOS 6).  I think there is some data in it that is the problem in the file as all my other larger and smaller Numbers documents open just fine on the iPad.  All were either created on the Mac or were converted from Excel using Numbers on the Mac.
User documentation about iCloud operations is scant.  I'll see what is available to Developers.

  • How to view all files stored in iCloud

How do I view all my files stored on iCloud?
I purchased additional iCloud memory space , backed up my iPhone then deleted videos from my iPhone to free up space.
Now I would like to retrieve a home video. Where/how do I see what's saved in my iCloud account?

You can't use iCloud to free up space on your phone like that.  Videos are only stored in the iCloud backup, and can only be accessed by restoring the backup to your phone.  However, if you delete the videos from your phone and continue to back up, the backup containing the deleted videos will be overwritten by one that doesn't and they will be lost.  Hopefully haven't backed up your phone since you deleted these videos.  If not, restore the backup to your phone to recover them.
In the future, import your camera roll photos and videos to you computer using your usb cable as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.  Then you can delete them from your phone and sync them back later if you ever want to.

  • What is the best way to keep my personal files stored in iCloud separate from my work-related files?

What is the best way to keep my personal files stored in iCloud separate from my work-related files? It seems that I'm not allowed to link my iPad mini and my work iMac using two different accounts, so I'm wondering how to make my single personal account work for both, while keeping personal vs work files reasonably separated.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Is it possible for you to upgrade your account to iCloud Drive? That would mean, all Macs upgraded to Yosemite, and all mobile devices to iOS8?
See:  iCloud Drive FAQ and iCloud: About using iWork for iOS and iCloud
In iCloud Drive you could create two separate custom folders, one for work documents and one for private documents and organize your documents there.  Don't use the app specific folders (Keynote, Pages, Numbers, ...) , because you can only create one level of folders inside these folders.

  • Read pdf files stored in icloud drive from ios8

Ok. So how do I Access and read my PDF files stored in icloud drive from my ipad?
I´ve read that there´s no icloud drive App like dropbox and that it has to be done from a third party App. (strange enough), but I can´t seem to find a third party App that connects to icloud drive yet.
    Thanks.

The Apple website specifically states "Because with iCloud Drive, you can safely store all your presentations, spreadsheets, PDFs, images and any other kind of document in iCloud and access them from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or PC.".
Now, howe do I "store my PDF" and "access them from my iPhone"?

  • Can i re-download movies i've purchased stored in icloud to my orig apple tv?

Can i re-download movies i've purchased stored in icloud to my orig apple tv without having to pay for them again?

If by 'your original Apple TV', you mean the Apple TV 1, then the answer is no. You can however re-download them to iTunes on your computer and either stream them to your Apple TV or sync them to its hard drive.

  • I cant open files stored in iCloud in iWork

I am using the latest version of iWork on my iMac and I can't open any files that are stored in iCloud any time I try to open a document stored in iCloud in an iWork app I get a dialog box that says 'The file "xxx.pages" couldn't be opened.' It does not mater which iWork application I am trying to use I get a version of that dialog. I can still access these files using the iCloud apps on the web or the iOS apps on my iPhone or iPad.
I was able to access these files at the beginning of January 2014 but sometime this month they stopped opening on the iMac and the latest updates to iWork did not help. I have reported this in feed back to Apple.
    Any ideas?

    As a work-around:
In the "Pages -> Open ..." dialog, drag the document out of the iCloud, and onto your desktop.
Once I did that, I could open and edit documents that I could not open when stored in the iCloud.  After the edits were complete, I could drag the document back to the iCloud and could open/edit it from my iPhone, but again not from the iMac until it was dragged back to the desktop.
This only applies some of my documents.  Some simple "test" documents, open fine when they are stored on the iCloud.  My more complex documents, containing mathematical symbols and other advanced formatting, need to be dragged to the desktop.
    Hope that helps.

  • Accessing Apple script & text files stored in iCloud

I started using iCloud for these.  prior I kept them in a folder in dropbox, which was accessible from my iPad/iphone.  Is there a way to access these files from my iOS device now their in iCloud?  I know the AppleScript won't actually run, but sometimes I need to view them on my iPad, especially some of my text files.

  • Are Files stored on Creative Cloud backed up and can I restore from previous date?

    Hello,
One of my laptops was compromised this week due to an email virus. Since then whenever I try to access files I have stored in my Creative Cloud folder while using a different machine none of the files will open. Does Adobe use any kind of backup or archiving which could restore from?
    Thanks!
    Ken Lamb

    Hi Kenelamb,
Did you happen to have the file sync turned on? If they are stored in the cloud then you will be able to retrieve them. Just log in with your Adobe ID to https://creative.adobe.com/archive#
http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/desktop-sync-getting-started.html. How are you accessing the files from a different computer? Are you just using a network cable to access them?

  • HT4859 where are my pictures in icloud back up?

I backed up my ipad yesterday to icloud. today I got a message to install update for itunes.  I installed, ipad froze.  I had to restore ipad on itunes.  now I cannot locate my pictures and videos on my icloud.

    Hey carbella76,
Backed up information should include pictures and videos. You'll want to restore your iPad from the backup you made by following the directions below:
iOS: How to back up and restore your content
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
When you go through Setup Assistant on a new device using iOS 5 or later, choose "Restore from iCloud Backup" and enter your iCloud account and password. You will see the three most recent backups for each of the devices on which you enabled Backup. Choose from which backup to restore.
If the home screen icons appear on your device and you wish to restore from an iCloud backup, erase your device (by going to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings). When prompted to set up as new or to restore from previous backup, select Restore from iCloud Backup. Enter your AppleID and password when prompted.
After your device restarts, your settings and accounts are restored and Backup starts downloading your purchased music, TV shows, apps, books, Camera Roll, and other content*. For best battery performance, leave your device connected to a power source until the restore is complete. You may be prompted to enter the passwords for all accounts enabled on your device.
A progress bar will appear underneath the apps that are being downloaded. To prioritize the restore of a specific app, tap its icon. Restore will attempt to download the same version of the app that you had installed previously. If that version is no longer available, the latest version of the app will be restored.
To check if the restore is complete, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.
    Best,
    David

  • Is there a way to download my files stored on icloud to my iphone?

why do i need to download and subscribe to dropbox, to be able to share my own file between mbp an iphone5?! why can't i download my files using icloud?!
this is some kind of ridiculous, because 5 years ago, filesharing was much easier than today... and why is it that difficult? because Apple disables functions that have existed since years!
finally icloud is only useable for iphone system backups, that you may never need. it is as useless as ibooks, passbook reminders, notes, voice memos, newsstand and so long. even your bluetooth connection is 100%useless without filesharing enabled... since 3 months i never used bluetooth.
You are going backwards in evolution, Apple!

Apple does not reading this forum. Its only user to user forum.
If you don't like iCloud don't use it.
You can use Dropbox to transfer files over Internet or an app (like Files) to transfer files over your local network (much faster)

  • Just downloaded Photos - replacing iPhoto it appears all my projects are now stored on iCloud because there is the image of a cloud on each one.  I don't want anything of mine on the cloud.  Is there no way to keep everything on my computer

All my Albums have a Cloud icon on them. I want to store all photos on my computer
I'm not worried about saving space Do I have no choice about storage?

You don't have to have your photos in iCloud.  In Photo's iCloud preference pane make sure ALL checkboxes are unchecked.

  • IWeb 09 - where are files stored?

    Newbie question-
I want to be able to work on a web design on both my iMac and MacbookPro, but I can't be sure I have all the files I need to do that?
I thought I would move all the site files to DropBox and then I could access them on the iMac at home and on the road with the mbp.
I will be then uploading them to a hosting site with ftp, if that matters. (I'm using mobile me right now for a testing site).
    thx for advice
