Are we going to get a speed boost in the Spring?

According to PC Pro ( http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/broadband/372577/bt-to-offer-300mbits-sec-fibre-on-demand ) we are going to be offered: "BT is set to boost the maximum download speed of FTTC lines from 40Mbits/sec to 80Mbits/sec this spring".  Can anyone verify this data?

Be very surprised if they charge extra, hardly anyone will pay extra if it's £5+ more a month. So they'd only make more from new customers.
Who can tell till there is an announcement, but this was spotted on ISpreview:
In addition Plusnet has also been taking part in BT's trial of 80Mbps (20Mbps uploads) FTTC (Fibre-to-the-Cabinet) technology, which will soon be made available to almost 40% of the UK. It's understood that PlusNet's technical trial has been running for two weeks and will be opened up to existing customers "from early February".
Dave Tomlinson, Plusnet's Product Team, said:
"We have so far seen maximum sync speeds of 80Mbps down and 20Mbps up with speedtest results coming in at a maximum of around 76Mbps. As with other DSL technologies the up to 80Mbps speeds are distance dependant, although it is distance between property and cabinet that counts rather than property and exchange. As such we have seen sync speeds vary from the mid 50s all the way up to the full 80Mbps, with a mean speed of about 68Mbps."
Those taking part in PlusNet's January FTTC trial will receive the faster service for no additional charge until 30th April. This suggests that Plusnet might be planning to offer a separate 80Mbps service at extra cost.
So it looks like part of the BT empire might be looking at charging a premium for it.

  • When are we going to get a 64-bit version of Acrobat ? ? ?

I started bookmarking a PDF of an old book from 1916, and I was unable to finish due to out-of-memory errors.
Near the end, I was closing the PDF and re-opening it after each new bookmark.  I finally reached a point
where I couldn’t add any more bookmarks.
That’s not all!  When I later opened the document and selected a page to begin reading,
I found that after that first page, I got an out-of-memory error whenever I tried
    to move to another page.
Fortunately, I have an unbookmarked backup copy of the document.
I have plenty of RAM on my computer, but the current version of Acrobat is a 32-bit program,
which I understand can access no more than 2 GB.
When are we going to get a 64-bit version of Acrobat that can handle book-size PDFs without
    running out of memory?

Thanks for getting back to me Dave!
The file is about 91 MB in size, with just under 400 scanned pages.
I’ve also encountered the problem when I’ve tried to OCR one of these old books.  I’ve had to do it 50-100 pages at a time, closing and re-opening the file each time.
Based on my online search for a solution, I had concluded that the 2 GB limit for 32-bit programs was the most likely source of the problem.  But I’m wondering now if Acrobat could use 2 GB  in processing a 91 MB file.

  • Are we going to get an explanation and an apology from Oracle?

Are we going to get any comment from Oracle about the forum upgrade debacle?
An unannounced upgrade, providing what seemed to be reduced functionality, followed by a rollback and loss of posts. And today, silence.

Jim i hope oracle will revert back the same very soon and no loss of any post.Oracle should have backup before any maintenance job ,but question arise here there is also shuffling between accounts what can be done for that scenario.

  • Well when are we going to get the 8.1 update?

Are we going to get the update or do I switch to T-Moble?

We definitely don't want to see you consider a move to a different service, plopitola. We are already hard at work with Nokia and Microsoft to ensure our Windows Phone users get great updates, but I don't have specific detail on the next release for your phone. Any new information about new software will be available at http://vz.to/1z29BKF when it's announced. Please let us know if there's something we can help with in the meantime.

Without flash, it seems that us iPad users are copping out on lots of browsing possibilities on the Internet. When are we going to get a compatible flash plugin??

It will never happen. Adobe announced sometime ago that they will no longer develop Flash for mobile devices, so once again, it is never going to happen for iOS devices.
There are browsers in the App Store that allow for some Flash content. Photon, Sky Fire, Puffin, look at a couple of those,

  • Does 802.11n give a speed boost on the iPad?

I did some testing to see if I'd get a speed boost by enabling 802.11n on my Belkin F5D8233-4 router, which supports 802.11n draft specification. I have Verizon FIOS with 25Mbps download/upload. I also have the Verizon router, which only supports 802.11b/g, and I can switch which router I'm connected to in order to compare speeds of 802.11n and 802.11g. All tests were done less than 3 feet from either router.
Bottom line is that the iPad doesn't get any speed boost by using 802.11n, at least by using speedtest.net to do the testing.
The test I used was with the speedtest app for the iPhone. I made the Belkin a pure 11n router, and ran that app from the iPad. So the connection had to be 802.11n. Then I connected the iPad to my Verizon router, which had to be 802.11g, and saw virtually no difference.
I did the same test with a Windows laptop from my job that supports 802.11n. It connected locally to the Belkin router at 72Mbps according to the internal utility. Testing using speedtest.net indicated that using the 802.11n connection on the Belkin was 50% faster than the 802.11g connection on the Verizon router. (About 30Mbps for Belkin/802.11n compared to 20Mbps for Verizon/802.11g for downloads).
But with the iPad, doing the same test (switching from Belkin router to Verizon router), the speed didn't change. It actually seemed a little slower when I was on 802.11n, but repeated tests showed some variability, and the average was about 19Mbps.
I realize that the overall speed for the iPad when I'm in my house will get throttled by the FIOS connection max of 25Mbps (although it's interesting that with my MacMini, and the Windows laptop, when connected via 100baseT, I get 30Mbps from FIOS when they promise 25Mbps!). But I can't get the good results from the iPad using 802.11n that I see with the Windows laptop. I'd like to try a local speedtest using the local LAN. I installed Speedtest MINI on the MacMini, enabling the Mac as a server, and the Windows laptop did 72Mbps on the local LAN. But Speedtest MINI requires Flash in the browser, so I can't do that test on the iPad. And the Speedtest app for iPhone doesn't let you pick a local URL for the server.
So I'm now pretty sure that 802.11n isn't really working right on the iPad with my Belkin router, in terms of delivering increased performance. I've read other posts where people have looked at the transmit rate from the router side, but I really wish I could look at the transmit rate from the iPad (like I do in Mac OS X, or in Windows) to verify.
To be sure, I'd like to run a speedtest on my local LAN from the iPad. Has anyone been able to actually do some kind of test that verifies the speed of an iPad connection on a local LAN, and does that verification from the iPad, and not the router?
And finally, has anyone ever done a test that verifies that 802.11n from an iPad delivers a speed boost compared to 802.11g? Are there specific requirements on the router side that need to be satisfied so that the iPad gets a boost? I've read elsewhere where someone said that you only get the boost if using Apple's Airport Extreme as the router (so that you can't really get 802.11n on a non-Apple router), and I think I saw someone say that the router has to support communication over 5.0Ghz for the iPad to be fast on 802.11n. Has Apple ever said what are the real requirements for the iPad to be faster on 802.11n versus 802.11g?

To the contrary, my experience is that the "G" standard on WiFi provided MUCH faster speeds than the "N" standard on Wi-Fi.  It makes no sense, I know, but it is true.
I was having horribly slow Wi-Fi speeds on my iPad2, despite a fast cable modem connection and a "N" generation Linksys wireless router (maybe 2-3 yrs old).  Was achieving speeds of only 1.3Mbs -- slow enough that you couldn't watch YouTube videos.  From hunting around on the web, I came across the suggestion to manually set the Wi-Fi router to the "G" standard (ie downgrade it from the faster "N" standard).  Remarkably, I did it and it worked like a charm.  I now get Wi-Fi speeds of about 12 or 13 Mbs, or 10x what I was getting before.  It is an easy fix.  And also I think the "G" standard is capable of 50Mbs so even though it is a slower and older standard, it is still way faster than anything you are likely to achieve as a home user.   I think there is some glitch or oddity in the iPad and iPad2 which can cause it to perform very poorly with older "N" standard WiFi routers.  New ones don't seem to have a problem.

  • When are you going to make GOOGLE TOOLBAR compatible with the latest version of firefox, i will not update to version 8 until its compatible

    Question
When are you going to make GOOGLE TOOLBAR compatible with the latest version of firefox, i will not update to version 8 until its compatible

It's not going to happen. Google announced withdrawal of their Google Toolbar.
Using Google Toolbar features without toolbars - MozillaZine Knowledge Base
    :http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_Google_Toolbar_features_without_toolbars
The Google Toolbar will not be updated for Firefox 5 or later Firefox versions. ([http://googletoolbarhelp.blogspot.com/2011/07/update-on-google-toolbar-for-firefox.html reference]) Google finally decided that their [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions problematic extension] is beyond repair for the little benefit added for Firefox users. Google as with other browsers is eliminating or making toolbars less accessible.
Consider the features that you are using and see if you can match up features from the list created by Google and by Firefox users.

  • Yet Another Syncing Complaint (when are you going to get it right, Apple?)

I have to say, syncing my phone with itunes is the most miserably frustrating techno-process in my life at the moment.
About to step out for lunch, I thought it'd be nice to grab a new audio book to accompany my sandwich and I to the park. I found a title and had it on my hard drive in under 90 seconds -- an impressively frictionless acquisition.
But then came time to go from computer to phone.
I click sync. Message: "Syncing will remove 30 applications including "Around Me" and others from your phone." Umm, why? Why 30? Why not all? Why any at all? No indication given. Okay, I don't care about the apps -- just the book for now -- so let's ignore the app's. I uncheck the 'Sync Apps' box. Message: "Not syncing your apps will remove all applications and their data from your iPhone." Are you <edited by host> kidding me? Where is the sanity in that? All I want you to do is LEAVE MY APPS ALONE. Instead, my options are lose 30, or lose all of them. Granted, there are probably ways to get them back after losing them, but all I want to do is go to lunch with my new book, not sit here and think long-term syncing strategy.
This is one of many examples of the absurd inflexibility of the iTunes<->iPhone relationship.
Another is the incessant backups that take 20 minutes. All I want to do is put a 200mb audio file on my phone and go to lunch. That should take less time than it took to download the file, not nearly two orders of magnitude more (after downloading the book, it took nearly 45 minutes to get my phone back to a usable state). Not only does the phone get backed up, but I notice that the syncing process includes transferring files that were ALREADY ON THE PHONE back to the phone.
Seriously, Apple? How is it that you can be so good at user experience EVERYWHERE ELSE and <edited by host> so hard at it here?
I'd say get a grip, but I'm not sure that's the message I want to send.
P.S. The fact that I'm this frustrated is obviously an indication of how otherwise invested I am in your products. It is indeed a love-hate relationship.

From the description I would assume you normally connect your iPod at home, but you made the purchase at work managed to connect to a different library that has the same content. Have you recently had to rebuild the library following a crash?
Apple have designed iTunes to associate the iPhone with a single library. When you connect it to a different library iTunes will want to erase all apps and media content (except the built-in apps) and replace them with stuff from the local libray. This happens even if you have the iPhone in manually manage mode and is different from the behaviour of earlier iPod models.
Alternatively you could have used the iTunes app on the iPhone to make your purchase, connecting to local wi-fi if necessary to download larger files. I often do this to acquire podcasts before leaving home/work just in case syncing takes longer than usual for some reason.
Alternatively, if my original guess was correct and you want to be able to update your iPhone from work, home, anywhere else you happen to be, it can be done with a portable clone of your library. See this thread:

  • When are we going to get infinite scrolling for the S4.  All other carriers have it on the S4 and it is frustrating that it is turned off for Verizon only.

All other carrier S4 phones have the option to turn infinite scrolling on/off.  However with Verizon there is no option and it is turned off.  Every forum I go to says that you have to root the device to turn it back on.  VERIZON are you going to listen to the myriad of people the would like this option, a basic option advertised for the Samsung S4?  Please PLEASE PLEASE give us the option back.

any body know whats going on???

Thanks for getting back to me Dave!
The file is about 91 MB in size, with just under 400 scanned pages.
I’ve also encountered the problem when I’ve tried to OCR one of these old books.  I’ve had to do it 50-100 pages at a time, closing and re-opening the file each time.
Based on my online search for a solution, I had concluded that the 2 GB limit for 32-bit programs was the most likely source of the problem.  But I’m wondering now if Acrobat could use 2 GB  in processing a 91 MB file.

  • When are we going to get 64bit support ?????

I just fell off my chair Crystal 2008 is 32 bit only.
What sort of software company ignores 64 bit

Do you happen to know if the Crystal 2008 service pack to enable use with Visual Studio 2008 will support x64.
This currently will be a show stopper for crystal if it does not run on x64 os we're going to have to find an alternative reporting system.
A lot of servers and clients are using x64 already, more are heading that way all the time.
We have to be able to deploy a reporting system into an x64 enviroment.
The CR.NET version shipped with visual studio 2008 is based on crystal 10.5.
A lot of reports we've created rely on features only available in crystal 11+
So fingers crossed I suppose, it'll be a real PITA to recreate all our legacy reports in another reporting system.

  • Are we going to get the ability to fade or make photos transparent again? This was my most used Picture Frame application for the teaching slides I create.

Even Powerpoint has this feature. Why would Apple dum down this previously powerful piece of software that made creating soft teaching slides so much fun?

I just dragged in an image from the desktop (using the Black theme) and, in the pane over to the right, it shows "Border" as "No Border". I click on that and I get to choose "Line" or "Picture Frame". Is Picture Frame what you're looking for?
Additionally, the "ragged edges" is there, too. Change to the Renaissance theme, set an image to have ragged edges, swich back to the theme you want to use, then, with that object selected, under "Styles" add this to your list of styles by clicking the PLUS sign.

  • When are you going to get rid of your "this is embarrassing message"? it is highly annoying and I may switch back to IE because of it.

This message pops up after a crash. Of course it is embarrassing to you. Do I need to know how you feel about it? Mainly it is annoying to me that it crashed. I don't want to know what you think or that you're sorry. Just fix it. It's not cute. It's not clever. I have started using Internet Explorer more and more to avoid this eyesore.
