Aren't melted magsafe cables waranty replaceable?

I have a melted cable and I have to bend it to make the thing work now and charge the macbook, but when I went to waranty, they said I cut it with scissors and after that it melted. What kind of explanation is that? The computer is still under waranty and it seems to be, that this is a safety hazard, but they still say I abused the cable (like I am someone, who would cut a power adapter of a $2000 laptop - maxed out macbook). This is just ridiculous: if I pay that kind of money for hardware I expect it to work and if it doesn't it has to be repaired, but instead I now have to pay even more for a replacement adapter and wait for 2 weeks until it arrives (I live in the Baltics, so that's the price of my location).
My question is should it or should it not be changed by waranty? If it should and they didn't I now need to find another apple dealer or just quit it.

Thanks for confirming, that it should be replaced. I read the posts here on this issue, the difference with me is that it has melted on the other side of the thin cable (close to the white box, not the macbook itself), but it's still a melting issue.
I also checked and it turns out this company is the official distributor of apple here, others are only resellers. I seriously doubt, that resellers are going to bother with supporting products sold by another company.
The only option would be to try and call apple support directly.
Pity if this doesn't get clarified, I was thinking of getting the new iMac and replacing my Windows desktops, but if I will get support which is in denial over an obvious issue with it, then I'll think twice. I was truly amazed actually that the adapter broke (I was thinking the HDD or the super drive are the most obvious candidates for breaking), as I had PCs and laptops for 7 years and nothing broke...ever, I even have a 2GB IDE drive at home, which is still working. In fact, the only electronics gadget that I brought into warranty in the last 5 years or so was the xbox360 (for obvious problems with overheating), which was replaced no questions asked.
Anyway, thanks, I hope warranty is better in other countries, because support/warranty can kill the company (there are examples). Hope I get it sorted out.

  • Melted MagSafe adaptor

Hey guys, my sister's MagSafe adaptor has started to melt toward the end where the cord joins the block, and it's starting to melt away at the plastic. I also noticed the cable itself getting VERY hot to touch, so there's a definite fault somewhere. I heard that Apple in America are replacing these dangerous power adaptors even outside of warranty, are Apple doing the same thing in Australia? Hope so.

Print that page and take it into the Apple store. Don't leave without a replacement. Get a manager involved if you need to.

  • Melted MagSafe

My MagSafe adapter has melted. The wires are exposed and the supply of power from the connector goes on and off. I first noticed this when I went to plug it into my MacBook Pro. I noticed it was staring to melt and I could see a wire. Over the next hour it went from a line to a hole.

I'm sorry, but don't their commercials boast about
the magsafe plug not taking down your laptop with it
if you trip on the wire? Along those lines, since the
plug is magnetically attached to the laptop, why
would pulling the chord matter? It's not like there
is any resistance being applied at the connection
    point.
I don't much appreciate the accusation that it was
your fault and you were trying to "swindle" them out
of a new cable. I would have got his name and called
Apple Customer Care or spoken with the store manager.
Those guys know to be friendly and more helpful than
that. But some bad eggs get through.
I also find the "one time replacement" rather funny
too. Are they going to put a flag on your account now
saying you got your free cable? Cripes...
Sadly I was only able to take advantage of this "MagSafe" feature once , when I pulled the cord off with my hand by accident .. uhm yay.. besides that , I have treated that adapter (specially arround the connector) like a small child, since it looked so **** weak. I even expected that I was going to have to replace it.... but burning!?! I should have been more aggresive in the genious bar , but I was just glad the guy even talked to me considering that I didn't have an appointment (I didn't know I'd need an appointement for a burned power plug that I thought could just be replaced).
Tomorrow I fly back home to los angeles, I will try to seak some intelligence in one of the area apple stores. I'm sure eventually I will get a new power cord, but will it be before my current one fully burns up? (don't even start telling me about how unsafe it is to use a burned plug) , or before my poor MBP's battery dies. The sad part is that when I do get a new power adapter (one way or another) it will in time kink up with minimal effort, and melt down again. I understand very much that problems can get through in early revs, but it's this unresposive reaction that is making me remove my apple sticker for my car.

  • MagSafe cable delaminating

    MagSafe cord is delaminating

call for appt and verify.   Its not equipment failure as would be naturally seen.
but contact them for appt. and find out and see if they replace it for you.
only other option some people with oily hands (lotions etc , baby oil) hand the cable and oil rots rubber, but that takes a lot.
its chemical breakdown of the rubber from:
    heat
    ozone
    oils
take your pick of those three.

  • Melted Coax cable, Hot to touch 2 way splitter

I lost all my services (TV and Internet) yesterday.  When I checked the splitter in the basement it was too hot to touch and the end of the supply coax cable was melting.  The service contact's response was , WOW that's not suposed to happen.  Hopefully the tech's can repair today.  Any ideas what caused this and can it be prevented?

Make sure the ONT is properly grounded. It sounds like a shorted device or coax somewhere. Something should have taken out a safety before a coax "melted" The tech will need to troubleshoot this issue. Anything less would just be an assumption.
If it were my house I would unplug the ONT power and disconnect the battery. Please consult tech support prior to doing this.

  • Magsafe Cable Keeps Fraying/ Splitting

My Magsafe was replaced on apple care and has since broken. My apple care has also expired. Do replaced parts also come with a separate one years warranty? Would apple replace the faulty magsafe, since their replacement has the same problem?
Also, I'm unsure of how to actually contact apple, every time I call them they tell me there is a £50 fee for calling.
I am certainly not paying that.
I live miles from an apple store.... how on earth can you reach these people!?

Look at the very bottom of this article under "additional information" on how to proceed.

  • Melted MagSafe Ouch!

Some unlucky dude's MagSafe connector is completely fried and was lucky the computer's connector didn't totally go as well
    Pics here
    and here

looking at the connector, you can see that the pins are just 'touching', not snapping into each other. It could be that for this particular model the pins where a bit too short, creating a tiny airgap (which conduct, but conducts badly).
I found that the power supply itself is actually extremely hot. Probably not good to cover it up in any way. I would hope that it has some kind of overtemp protection.
Another possible reason: The power connector is right next to the hottest part of the laptop.

  • MacBook Charger Melted Cable

I've just seen my MackBook Black (2007/8) charger melt through its own cable. The cable has melted where the magsafe cable meets the adapter.
It hasn't been against anything hot, it has definitely melted through itself, for whatever reason.
What recourse do I have? Am I just left in a position where I'll have to fork out for a new charger?

Short circuit. Some component failing. Charger getting hot normally and being held against wire?

Probably, unless you have some sort of warranty or this is a subject to a recall. I checked online and didn't see anything about a recall.

  • Why won't apple replace my magsafe power cable in the uk, as recalled in the US.  tHANKS

Why won't Apple replace my magsafe cable in the UK, as is done in the US?  Thanks.

Thank, Russ. I just wondered if anyone had an opinion about the situation, which seems unfair. If there's a product call, surely it should be beyond just the US.

  • Magsafe and Battery issue

Hi there, I'm having a bit of a problem with my MacBook 2009. The exact model number is A1342, if that helps.
I originally bought it used online, and have been having issues since day one. It worked normally when I first plugged it in, then I unplugged it and went somewhere else for a bit. When I went to go plug it back in, the Magsafe cable showed a very dim orange light, and then it turned off completely, and the battery status at the top showed that it wasn't being charged. It also showed a little triangle icon, and said that the battery would need to be serviced soon.
Well, I did some research online, and even check the warranty status. I figured since it was expired, and I had paid so little for it, there was no issue in trying some self repair. I quickly found which cable connected to the main board, unplugged it, waited a few moments, then plugged it back in. Suddenly, the Magsafe would start working again! Until I unplugged it and plugged it back in, that is.
So, after a bit of leaving it sit, I was able to obtain a used, but working battery from a friend whose Macbook (The same model) decided it wanted to stop working. I plugged in the battery without removing the old one, and it worked well, so I plugged in the Magsafe cable, and the little orange light turns on briefly, then shuts off again right away.
Through all of this, I tried with the battery unplugged, and only the Magsafe running the computer, and it works perfectly fine! Green light and all! Plus, the Magsafe seems to work on other computers without an issue.
So, could it just be the battery? Or might it be something else? I've never had a problem with a Macbook before, so this is certainly a bit weird! Thanks in advance for your help!

Your battery looks pretty healthy to me. There is the possibility that the capacity will suddenly decrease though. With the capacity numbers you have, the battery should work fine for about 3 hours. I'm not sure a new battery will help with your issue.
If you disconnect the MagSafe adapter, does the computer shut off immediately? Do you have the battery status displayed in the menu bar? If so, what does it say?
Try resetting the SMC to see if that helps any:

  • Magsafe Problems

I have a mid-2010 MacBook 13" White Unibody and it's less than a year old; In the past couple of days I've been noticing some slightly worrying changes in my magsafe. It appears that in some positions it will refuse to charge my MacBook, I noticed some grot in the adapter and proceeded to carefully remove it as instructed by the troubleshooting page provided by Apple. Quite strangely, it appears to charge when there's a kink in the cable, it also moves around a lot within the adapter and fear that it is the Mac not the cable and will gradually deteriorate. Another worrying change is that when it is charging it generates a lot of heat... so much so that last night it caused the rubber bottom to warp and I have had to order a new rubber bottom via the replacement scheme provided by Apple. All other forums I have read haven't quite been able to put my mind to rest, does anyone know of what's wrong with my Macbook and how I could go about fixing it? Perhaps a new Magsafe cable?

I've come across this before with the odd Apple rep. You have to expain to them that you do not need the complimentary telephone support but a hardware repair. You have a 12 month hardware warranty and faulty hardware to report not a support question.
If they insist on not helping try another call to a different rep and then move on to Customer Relations
    Apple define Complimentary Support here;

  • Magsafe problems and apple care

    Hello folks,
It seems like my Magsafe power adapter has finally kicked the bucket. I noticed that the portion of cord nearest to the brick that gets plugged into the wall started melting and frayed wires became visible in the exposed jumble of internal stuff. The area where is melting/fraying occurred is also slightly (ever so slightly) brown. I have apple care on my mac book pro, are these kind of things covered by warranty?
Also I have discontinued using the adapter and am running only on battery power (two hours left!)

    Folks,
This is just a follow-up. I took my Macbook Pro and frazzled/melted Magsafe connector to my nearest Apple Store, which happens to be in Shibuya Tokyo. They exchanged it for a new one, almost no questions asked. Except the clerk did ask if I was "injured" by the melting. Apple care, best warranty ever, even works overseas!
Oh and it seems like wrapping the cord of the Magsafe may contibute to the melt downs. According to the clerk, I mean Genius' explanation one shouldnt wrap the cord around the Magsafe when stowing it. Hmm....

  • Usb cable for appletv

Just updated my little black AppleTV and, on the television, it's giving me an illustration of itself being connected directly to my computer via USB cable. I looked in the box and there aren't any USB cables. Dug around the house and I find nothing of the size on the little port below the HDMI port on the AppleTV. Was this USB cable supposed to come with the AppleTV or am I supposed to buy yet something else from Apple? Thanks in advance for any advise or assistance.

That means the update didn't apply correctly.
It's telling you to restore via iTunes using a micro usb cable and they don't come with the device. If you don't have one you can find them for cheap online.

  • 2006 MBP: can I use a new adapter with my old t-cable?

My 85w adapter crapped out and I have isolated the issue to the adapter itself and not the cable with the magsafe t-shape. I understand that the new adapters dont work with older macbooks so rather than trying to track down an old adapter can I just buy a new one with the L-shape magsafe and swap in my t-shape magsafe cable?

There have been people report "fit" issues with the L adaptors on older MBPs. Not all, but a lot. Take the MBP with you to an Apple Store or AASP and make them show you that the new adapter not only fits but charges your computer.

  • Charger Cord Melting

I got an iPhone 3Gs a couple of weeks. I normally charge it by using the included USB cord connected to the AC plug that also came in the box. 2 days ago I noticed that the plug was melted where it connects to the bottom of the phone. The plastic had actually melted back and turned brown.
I connected another cord that I have and it has worked well since, but seeing that was a little disconcerting. 2 things I am wondering:
    1. Has anyone else had a problem with this happening? and,
    2. Will the Apple Store replace the melted USB cable?

Actually, the day I posted that issue an Apple rep contacted me, arranged an appointment at the Genius Bar for the next day and they did exactly that. They also ran tests on my phone and said it was fine. Good service!
Still don't know why, but at least they resolved it quickly.
