Arstechnica: Creative lies on missing DTS/Dolby Decoding feature

Creative Says : "these functions are not supported at driver level in Windows Vista." This isn't true. When two of the driver files from a standard X-Fi card are replaced with two driver files drawn from a Dell-specific driver available at the company's support [url="http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R44728&for matcnt=&libid=0&fileid=9372">web site[/url], DTS and DD decoding immediately reappear as options and function correctly."
"Creative might be able to get away with saying that DTS and DD decoding aren't enabled at the driver level for X-Fi and Audigy cards, but the functionality is clearly baked into the driver and is thus supported."

Below is my open letter to Creative about this situation ....
To Creative Executi'ves ,
I am a core customer, someone who has been purchasing your cards for years. Hear me out.
What you may not realize is this whole backlash about your drivers is not new, it has been building up slowly for months and has just now come to a head. With both my Audigy and more recently my X-fi Fatality card on XP, I have always used my Creative card as the center of sound on both my computer and my entertainment system. I took it for granted that after spending so much money on the ultimate sound card, that I could just plug in my cable box or dvd player into x-fi and my Klipsch speakers would hum. After spending so much money on computer speakers that would also double as my TV center speakers I was not about to buy another external decoder to do something I expect my sound card to do.
At first after moving to Vista I thought that this feature was eventually coming, that you were working diligently to get my x-fi's decoding capabilities back. Then month after month my expectations dwindled. Imagine my anger when I come to realize that this feature was purposely removed at the software level. That by simply adding two files from a x-fi dell driver that the feature came back. Then on top of it you pour salt into the wound by never fully explaining the reason why you removed these important features. Your explanation was simply that it was not supported and that PowerDVD would now handle all Dolby/DTS decoding. After months of waiting your explanation was far from sufficient. Imagine how annoyed i was trying to figure out how to get PowerDVD to actually decode something from an outside source , which it does not. In my case, and many others on this forum your explanation was lacking. Im going to take a leap and assume that something about Vista's DRM has prevented you from decoding Dolby & DTS. If that is the case why not come out and just explain it to your customers as such. Your lack of transparency on this issue has just been plain bad and now because of it you are angering your customer base.
Let me be clear, in my eyes, this situation has severely hurt your companies reputation and brand. The sad thing about this is that in the end this is not a story about lacking features. It's a story about a company with good products that just did not know how to effecti'vely communicate with it's customers. Will I ever buy another creative product again, I dunno. But I do know that this whole fiasco has decreased the chances that I will. If I do , it will most definitely not be one of your upper end products as I have always purchased in the past.
Im done with this rant, im going to play some Battlefield 2 with Ultra High EAX settings. Hey, at least they did not take away all my features like they did with those poor Audigy users

PawPaw, I feel your pain ! I currently own both an Audigy Platinum and a Creative X-fi Fatality. The main reason I purchased the upgrade cards which included breakout boxes is for the optical/digital in feature. As I say in my letter, I have, for years hooked up my DVD and cable box to provide my theater entertainment though my computer speakers. The setup worked great?
Creative in essence has retroacti'vely removed the feature that was the motivating factor in my purchase of their upper model cards. By making the decision not to add this "expected" feature on Vista (The default OS)? Creative, as I see it has in actuality removed a defining functionality from it's product line. It has made the front box with all it's special hook ups, pointless. Angering your enthusiast base is just not a good way to bring your company back into the green. If Creative had at least explained the reason for the feature removals, that's one thing. It would at least be a start towards improving customer communication.
It's sad to see such a staple in the tech industry go down hill so fast. While the company executi'ves in singapore are huddling around planning their company comeback.... Which is no doubt the next greatest thing high fidelity MP3 players . They ought to take some time out to think about the customer again because a company li'ves and dies on it's customers, not it's technology.

  • Difference between the Creative Decoder DDTS-100 & Creative Home Theater Connect DTS-

I've had the Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5. System for years now for my PC with a Sound Blaster card, and I just got a MacBook.
    http://www.klipsch.com/products/details/promedia-ultra-5-.aspx
I've asked on the Klipsch message board about a digital decoder. I was recommended the Creative Decoder DDTS-00
    http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=4&subcategory=36&product=9468
but I also found the Creative Home Theater Connect DTS-60 for less money, any idea what the difference between the two would be?
    http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=&subcategory=6&product=49

No, for the reason mentionned in the stickies. But since you seems not knowing much on digital sound let me explain.
Digital means it's coded with 0 and , and therefor only cable is sufficient. You might know there is many sound formats for home cinema, like Dolby Digital and DTS. And a digital decoder need to be input a compatible sound stream to be able to decode it. Which means the soundcard MUST be able to convert it's output sound in one receiver compatible format.
Creative cards cannot do this kind of thing.
Another thing: current home theater sound format are limited to 6. (DD-EX and DTS-ES). So you would not be able to achieve more than 6..
THX isn't a sound format, only a certification. The THX calibrator is a must have component to correctly calibrate your speakers to enhance you sound experience.
If you need to have TRUE surround up to 7. channels you don't need to use digital connection because it's simply useless.

  • Creative T7700 and DTS-100 Decoder (PROBLEMS, PLEASE HELP)

    Hi
I purchased a Creative T7700 Speaker system and DTS-100 Decoder the other week but so far have had no luck getting it to work. I use a Gigabyte GA-K8NS ULTRA motherboard which came with an audio combo kit that supports 7.1. I did everything the logical way, Connecting the black wire to black socket in speaker and red tabbed wire to the red socket in speaker, I then connected each speaker to the sockets at the back of subwoofer. Then I connected the audio cables (grey, blue, orange, black) from sub to the Decoder switch, then connected the other wires from switch to the audio jacks at the back of the PC(blue plug to blue socket, black plug to black socket, orange plug to orange socket), The I connected the hardwired plugs in decoder switch to the decoder. Finally, I plugged the mains power to the decoder and subwoofer but got no sound at all. I checked the 7.1 was set up on computer and it was.
HAS ANYONE ANY IDEAS WHY I GET NO SOUND? :smileyindifferent:
    1. I know I have power cause the circular green light on volume and bass controller is on.
    2. I have the decoder set to analogue and tried 1,2 and 3.
    3. I have tried changing the decoder switch between decoder and PC.
    4. I checked I have the decoder and subwoofer set to 7.1
    5. I know it isnt a problem with computer or decoder because when I plug earphones into the green audio jack in either the PC or Decoder I get sound (Although I have the decoder switch set to "PC"meaning the decoder just sits there with its little green lights making no difference at all).
    PLEASE HELP WITH THIS PROBLEM.
    Thanks

I also am having this issue. Where I have installed the software for the M and after doing so I plug it in and get the Driver installation that fails to find drivers. If I try to open the creative explorer or the firmware upgrade released yesterday both say no device attached.

  • Dolby decoding in WMP 12?

Dolby decoding in WMP 2?! Ok I believe I brought this up a while back when Windows 7 was in Beta, but now we are in RC and I am still having issues.
    From the begining:
My sound card is a first gen Xtreme Music, so it supports Dolby/DTS decoding. I am able to enable this by going into the sound options of my DVD program and select SPDIF Passthrough. To do the same in?Windows Media Player , I would click the Advanced button under the DVD tab in WMP options. So then when I watch a DVD, a box would pop up in the bottom right corner telling me if I was listening to DD, Pro Logic, or DD Ex.
So whatI want to know is how I can do the same in Windows 7? My DVD program?I used before breaks in?Windows 7, but?in WMP 2, that Advanced button I mentioned earlier is grayed out. Am I missing something? All I did so far in Windows 7 is install the beta driver, that is all.

  • Dolby Decod

Ok like every one else on the board i am happy that my sound no longer crackles or pops, and i have definately experienced an improvement of quality in sound, but, and this maybe a newb question and for that I'm sorry but does anyone know when the Xfi series with dri've bay will be capable of using the Dolby digital decoding feature and the remote supplied with the unit, obviously i know that time and effort had to be put into getting the drivers released and working correctly first, and i am in no way having a go at creative. i was just hoping for some sort of time frame for my card to be used for decoding again.

The NX can't decode Dolby Digital from an external source. If you can actually hear stereo, it means that the DVD player is decoding the data. If you get a decoder, the DVD player should be set to output the raw digital data rather than PCM.

  • Creative Volume panel missing somethi

On the volume panel for my new XFI Extreme gamer control panel I do not see two things that are actually shown on the beack of the box. There is a decoder for DTS and Dolby Digital shown on the panel in the pic, but they don't exist on my version. What happened to them? Is this why i cannot, with my new card, get digital out of my Logitech Z-680's? I have my coax to mini plug installed properly and all the S-PDIF settings right on my DVD player.

The newer soundcards (Including : Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatalty Pro Series SB046A, Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum Fatalty Champion Series SB046A, Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro SB055A) no longer has the DTS and Dolby Digital Hardware decoding. Therefore you will not see these options. Just through a software level, such as the included free download of the software : Cyberlink PowerDVD Version 6 OEM DTS/Dolby Digital.
If you have the Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer SB073A, this too includes a?free download of the software : Cyberlink PowerDVD Version 6 OEM DTS/Dolby Digital.
Also, the Cyberlink PowerDVD Version 6 OEM DTS/Dolby Digital will only work in Windows XP SP2.

  • Audigy ca0106-dat hardware dolby decod

hi! just to clarify wif the specs of the audigy ca006-dat.my friend just purchased the audigy value pci soundcard. after installing the card and the drivers, everything went well until he tried to playback dvds. there is no audio output. he has to turn off spdif output in the dvd playback software to have audio output. updating the drivers to the latest version does not solve the root problem. i am currently using the MSI diamond plus motherboard with built-in audigy se. also using the dsp chip "ca006-dat". but the dsp on his card is the "ca006-dat lf". i believe they are the same, correct me if i am wrong. the strange thing is my onboard audigy has audio output when playback dvds?regardless spdif is on or off. after some investigations, it turn out that there is no decoder tab under the device control panel at my friends' side. for my side, mine has the decoder tab to turn on dolby digital ex and dolby pro-logic decoders. so therefore, since they are using same type of dsp chip, does the ca006-dat dsp actually perform decoding in hardware? why the pci audigy value does not have docoder whereas the onboard audigy se have decoders since both use the same dsp chip?

there is no dolby decoding chip in any of the soundblaster card. the ca006-dat chip or whatever you call it is not a dolby chip. all decoding is done via creative dolby driver. it's nothing to do with whether they have the same chip or not. it's a matter of whether creative wanted to bundled these decoder driver in the package or not.

  • V2.18.0004 driver..DD/DTS input decode option is missing, why is that? (Vista 64bit + X-FI Eli

EDIT: Mistery is solved....read second post to see answer!
Read about the added hardware DD/DTS decoding in Vista with latest driver v2.8.0004!
But I seem to be missing the SPDIF option in the audio consol. Only the "default" and "passthrough" option are available. It doesn't say in the driver description that it's only for 32bit windows(like the DVD-Audio option)so I guess something else most be wrong.
I used the Creative auto opdate tool twice to update. First time, it found the new drivers plus, I think, an update to the Creative mediaplayer. After discovering the missing DD/DTS decode option, I tried for fun, running it'sagain. And this time, it found like 3/4 more updates, like a newer audio consol version...yeah, perhaps it worked now, I thought! But no, unfortunately that was not it! :-(
I don't have any DD/DTS receiver nearby my PC, so I can't test if at least the passthrough option works, but I'm considering if a re-install of all Creative software is the way to go, but would like to hear from others first.....parhaps there's an easier way and again, I don't really now if others got it to work under Vista 64 and on a Elite edition X-FI....
Haven't noticed anything else, didn't notice any errors during updating or after, so I'm merely just curious to know if the "new" Vista decode option is accesible to me
    Anyone with any experience/input :-)
    Cheers!
Message Edited by Mr_DJ on 08-03-2008 0:08 PM

Ok, nevermind, I have found out why!
My Elite Pro card, to my BIG surprise, apparently is not supported according to this list http://www.soundblaster.com/X-FiList/
This was a BIG BIG surprise to me, as I wasn't aware of Creative removing features in newer revisions of the model.
Bought a new Elite Pro about half a year ago or so(after having used an former Elite Pro card for little over 2 years) because the other card had it's analog pre-outs failing.
Migrating to Vista I didn't think of the feature missing, as I thought it to only be a software problem due to Vista's new hardware restrictions....well, learning again.
However, I now can't help but feeling dissapointed and a little let down by this move!

  • Give it to us straight creative, will we EVER see Dolby Digital or D

I have had enough of the waiting for new drivers to come out for any of the creative sound cards that decode dolby digital and DTS. All of us Sound Blaster card owners deserve to know if out cards will ever get this ENTRY LEVEL feature in our hardware again. I need to start upgrading my system and i need to know that if i go with the top of the line X-FI card with X-RAM, it will get dolby functionality soon. If not, i am willing to forgo the X-RAM and go with a competitor card that does everything under vista without problems, albeit with lower versions of EAX. So come on creative, let me have it, hit me and all the other creative soundblaster owners with the truth. do i keep my hopes up of dolby digital decoding under vista, or do i go elswhere?

For Serious ! Creative has really dropped the ball on Vista support. Not being to integrate my PC speakers with my entertainment system as I had with XP is mighty annoying. It's strange that the?Creative beta drivers?would decode anything I could throw at it. Then all of a sudden?the so called release drivers mysteriously loose this ability. This points directly to the fact that this is not a technical issue but?one of?licensing.Message Edited by soundfire on 05-08-200706:50 PM

  • AC3Filter Dolby decoding on Xfi under Vista x64 - please he

How do I set up AC3filter to decode the signal from my satellite box optical in?I have the audio optical output from my Sky+ satellite receiver connected through the I/O module to my?X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatalty Pro. My Creative Inspire T7700 7. speakers are connected directly?to my soundcard with the 7. audio cable. I can hear normal sounds fine through my system, but anything broadcast with DTS (DD) doesn't work - i guess because Vista does not support hardware decoding. So I'm trying to use A3filter to decode for me. However, I can't work out the settings I need to use. Any ideas? Many thanks.

Dolby Digital (DD/AC3) is completely different form DTS. I'm not sure that Sky transmits DTS, so assume thats a typo. Chances are that there is no support for incoming decode of multichannel audio via Creatives crap Vista drivers, compounded Vista's **bleep** DRM controls and removal or DirectSound. If that's the case then at most you will only get a stereo stream passed from the optical in to the soundcard, so any software like AC3Filter or FFDShow's direct sound filters wont work anyway. From the Vista FAQ:?Will decoding of Dolby Digital and DTS signals be supported in the future? If not, why not?
These functions are not supported at driver level in Windows Vista and going forward will be supported at application level by applications such as Power DVD or WinDVD.
Perhaps when/if Creative pull their finger out and get some proper drivers out there will be software support for decode of multichannel, (if there isnt already), although it begs the question of why Creative are incapable of doing the same at driver level or via their own software.

  • DTS, AC3 Decoding Audigy 2Zs or PowerDV

    Hello All,
    Q. according to creative the Audigy2Zs has Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, but does anyone know if this is hardware or software decoding.
Q2. I have Powerdvd 6 deluxe with all the audio packs. Do you disable the Audigy2zs decoder or keep it on. Double the juice twice the power!?
    regards,
    AL

    (Q) Apparently it is HARDWARE decoding.
    (Q2)
Case : If you disabled DVD software decoding ("S/PDIF Out") and enabled your soundcard's AC-3 / DTS decoders, your soundcard will be responsible for AC-3 / DTS decoding.
Case 2: If you enabled DVD software decoding of AC-3 / DTS, then the DVD audio data will already be decoded into surround sounds before sending to your soundcard. In this case, your soundcard will ALWAYS receive uncompressed surround sounds, and there is NO DIFFERENCE in enabling / disabling your soundcard's AC-3 / DTS decoders.
"Twice the power won't double the juice."

  • Dd audigy decoding or dts software decodi

Is better listen dvd in dolby digital mode with spdif on software(decoding by audigy nx usb)or in dts software mode(decoding by powerdvd or windvd)?

The in-built DD decoder on the Audigy is in fact a sofware decoder. It shouldn't make any difference. The newer Audigy 2 ZS and X-Fi cards have DTS decoding in SPDIF mode as well.
DTS decoding on PowerDVD is to be avoided as it sounds different to all other DTS decoders (WinDVD/nVidia Purevideo decoder/Creative A2ZS/X-Fi decoder).
As to whether DD or DTS decoding is better, it's a matter of preference. DTS has more pronounced high frequency bass ( sounding sharper/crisper ) but Dolby Digital has better very low frequency effects (booms and stuff). It's very rare for DD and DTS to sound the same. One of the reasons is that DTS is always in "full range" mode where the volume difference between the quietest and loudest sound is great. To hear dialogue you need to put the volume up, which makes the loud booms and stuff even louder. DD has dialogue normalisation which keeps the dialogue loud audible at all times, adjusting the volume of all other sounds. DD has three modes of operation Quiet environment(late night/maximum dynamic range compression), Normal ( moderate compression ), Theatre mode( full range/uncompressed). Dynamic range compression is a feature of DD which allows it to reduce the volume level between the quietest sound and the loudest. In Full range it's quite close to DTS with the volume turned up on DD. In Quiet mode though I've noticed that DD's surround channels are somewhat subdued.
However bass in general sounds different between the two codecs. The bass and the loudness. That's the main difference.
People, mostly with high end gear, claim they can't hear the difference between the two codecs. But for people with el cheapo speaker systems in general usage they sound quite different.
    My preference is for DTS.
