Ask a stupid question....

hey guys,
listen i know its been asked a million times before, and believe me i've trawled through many forums researching this, but i just want to know what is really the best way to protect my new 13" macbook air....
Im not going to be throwing it out any windows or running over it with the car, just want to know the best way to keep it scratch free, while giving it maximum 'bump' protection!
i've been looking at the Thule and booq cases, but wanted to know if the macbook air will work with the TAS-113 (http:/www.thule.com.au/details.php?p_id=89&listid=34&slistid=&seo=TAS-113___13_i nch_MacBook_Pro_Sleeve)
I like the fact you can unip it anduse the mac in the case...
Also, would a combination of hard skin (such as the speck or inCase) and sleeve be good or overkill....
Im going backpacking with my mac and just want to give it the protection it deserves while im out in the rugged wilderness!!
thanks guys
ben

The various shells and hard covers like the inCase really offer no protection other than minor scratch resistance.  They offer no impact protection at all really.  I am a fan of the Booq vyper series of padded semi-rigid sleeves and have used them with my last 3 MBPs when carrying them in a backpack or briefcase.  There are other good sleeves as well, but my own experience is with Booq and I would recommend them.
If actually backpacking in the boonies, I might still want something even more rigid to avoid other things in a large pack from pressing into or on the flat top or bottom of any laptop in the pack. A soft or even padded semi-rigid sleeve will not keep a laptop from flexing or bending if weight or objects in the pack pushes hard enough against it.  People have been known to crack screens using soft sleeves in backpacks and forgetting that a book edge or some other hard object pressing on or against the laptop will indent or flex the top case enough to crack the glass.

  • HT4437 I hate to ask a stupid question.....

My apple TV states I can use Air Play from an Apple phone/ipad/computer.  However, I do not own any other apple device.  Can I use Apple Air Play with a PC Based Laptop provided that it has all other necessary components installed and updated?

That's not a stupid question at all! The answer is, yes. There are a few applications which can do this but I would personally recommend a favorite of mine called AirParrot. I checked your profile but it seems you do not have your devices entered. I assume you have an Apple TV 2, otherwise AirParrot will not work.
Go ahead and give AirParrot a try, there is a free version for you to test on and if it works you will have to buy the $10.00 full version. It does come with a decent price tag, but it is around the same price it would cost you to get a HDMI to plug into your screen anyway. Plus, it's wireless!

  • This is a stupid question but I needed to ask because I don't want to go there and not being able to buy it, but can I get the iPhone 5 brought straight there when I go to an apple store?

This is a stupid question but I needed to ask because I don't want to go there and not being able to buy it, but can I get the iPhone 5 brought straight there when I go to an apple store?

And I meant go to the apple store physically without preordering it online, and I meant the Southampton one. So could I just stroll in apple store and buy a iPhone 5 in Southampton apple store and buy the iPhone 5 straight away? Because I didn't want to have to wait? I just want to go in and buy it and go out with it, if you guys get what I mean? And felipeV if it is in stock could I just buy it and leave with my iPhone 5?

  • Before I ask stupid questions...

Just taken over at a small post facility and need to read up on Xserve RAID related issues before I ask stupid questions on this forum. So can anyone refer me to any useful sites/blogs/apple articles about Xserve RAID setups geared towards video editing environments with mutiple operators?
Would be good if they included information on RAID configuration, fibre channel versus gigbit ethernet and what read/write rates I should be expecting to see when working in SD and HD environments.

  • Really stupid question - Migrating from 6i to 11g

    Hi all,
I'm a developer that have been working with oracle since Forms 3, right now I use Forms 6i and I would like to know what I need to use Forms 11g. I understand this new environment is web based, but to start developing and deploying, what I need? for example if I buy the Oracle Forms & Report 11g, I also will need the OAS? or just with Forms and Report I could deploy (somehow) the application?
Please don't flame me, I just want to understand how this works now.
    Best Regards

As my old college profession used to say - "The only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked!" Forms 11g only supports web deployment. This means you will need the OAS with the Forms and Reports Services installed as well. Typically, the setup is three tiered ( 1 server = Database, 1 server = Application Server, 1 server = Infrastructure server ). You don't have to set up the technology stack multitiered - all three could reside on the same server or you could have the all three on the same machine but is not recommended. I would at least have the database on a server seperate from OAS.
Here are a few links to get you started.
    Oracle Documentation
    * Check out: Development Tools - Oracle Forms, Middleware - Applications Server - Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g and Middleware - Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence - Oracle Reports
Since you will be upgrading from Forms 6i to 11g, be sure to visit the Oracle Forms-Upgrading Forms 6i to Forms 11g documentation.
    BTW, welcome to the forums!

  • Probably a stupid question about cropping a video..

OK, so I shot an interview with a black background and once I went to edit it, I noticed a red object in the far right corner. Is there a way I can add black over this object or crop it out? I know this is a stupid question, but I'm new to video and editing in general so I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.

There are several ways to accomplish what you want.
KGCW has talked about the Crop Effect.
Depending on exactly where the object is, and whether the camera was locked down, it might be possible to duplicate your Clip, place it above your initial Clip, then offset it a bit (Motion>Position), with the Fixed Effect>Motion>Position, and then apply the Garbage Matte to that offset duplicate, effectively Cropping out everything, but a small "patch" from the existing background. Note: if the edges of that Garbage Matte are too hard for you, you could create a soft-edged Track Matte, and use that to hold out the rest of the offset duplicate.
Another method, and depending on where, and how large the offending item is, would be to go to the Fixed Effect>Motion, and use Motion>Scale to increase the size of the Clip (do not do too much Scale, or quality will suffer). You might also need to do a bit of Motion>Position, to get that red object behind the Video's Frame Size. This will effectively Crop the object.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

...but shouldn't the "answeree" ,at least  try to ask themselves "what if this were "my" problem would that be catorgorized as a worthy question..thus recieving a worthy "answer?
My b/w cartridge, was inserted then after ZI had to pull it out again..why? because the carriage wasn't sliding "back" to the far right ceratinly I cannot insert the Tri-color" into the slot "after" the mecanisism has moved,& stayed whwrre it's impossible to insert any cart- in while in that position..anyway..right?
So "if it were you? What would you do? I...
tried to get it out it staed like I said before..the-"HP" book- that came{ w/ hp} is misplaced  something I never do..is loose info I like "words" unlike online messages re:"How To's..NO matter what I pulled, pushed, couldn't get it out so what do they mean by machine must be plugged in  I thouhjt I got a shock nothing big but read the steps you'll see  "Hp is telling you machime must be on..the directions are contradictory..
Waht is holding it so tightly in place? I know this is stipid but when desperation grabs you..well you'll ask anything
Can you INSERT cart{color] on left while carriage is on the right..of course bot..the sides are fatter, lacking slack room..
would you just "give it a good PULL?
Did I pass the "correct answer test? I do think that's clever however,,I oftentimes have no patiernce for stupid people so usually stupid questions are sure to come..one must learn tyo either ignore them,or go against one's grain by "yessing them" You learn these things as you get older you know! Are you Bob Headrick? Can you please help me?
1- Will I break this by getting it out?
2- Message box: Cartridge missing{there was one} or..Both are missing but why did it state both..:
Would you or anyone here do this are you people following me?? The message is the same as many others have said there's also said.   ".missing cartridge" even though "one" was in? jentilpet

OK, you must have read this post but it would help to read it again.  What is your printer model?  It sounds like you may be having trouble changing the print cartridges.  You do need to have the printer plugged in and turned on to be able to access the cartridges.  I have never seen any HP documentation that would suggest otherwise.  Generally you would open the lid on the printer and the cartridges would be moved to a location where you could access them.  It really does depend on your printer.  What is your printer model?
You can download the manual for your HP printer from a link here.  Enter the printer model of your printer, click on Solve a Problem and then look on the right side of the page for a link to the manual.

  • Probably Stupid Question

    Hello all,
what I would like to ask is ... on my G5 ... can I install both FCP5 and FCP HD and use both??
    Thanking you in advance!

Are you asking if you can keep multiple versions of the software on the same system? If so, maybe. The easiest way is to have multiple startup disks. If you have a second internal drive it's a breeze. If you have only one internal drive, you can partition it or use an external firewire drive as a startup drive. I seem to remember a post saying if you renamed the earlier version of fcp before doing an install you could have multiple versions of fcp on your system. There might be problems caused by this method. Do a search here and see if you can find any references to this or perhaps someone else will pipe up.
This is not a stupid question and your subject line will limit the responses you get. Perhaps you should start a new thread with a better "subject." I, of course, always read posts labeled "stupid." It helps me polish my superiority complex.

  • Here's a really stupid question re servers.

I am a techie on individual computers with no experience on servers. The aim is to have a server for 5 computers with the following features- ALL files stored on the server, e-mail server, print sharing, remote access away from the office for both mail and files.
Now all of that is possible I know with apple and I can learn easy enough. What i don't understand is setting up the mail server.
I currently use "oneandone" where my 10 domains are held with about 15 pop3 e-mail accounts that go to individual computers (expensive business)
If I buy the apple os server, do I no longer need the mail services of "oneandone"?? I'm confused as to what the pop or smtp server names if they no longer host the mail..Also if it means you can set up unlimited e-mail accounts at your domain, how does the server know its your domain (i.e. can i not just set up [email protected])
Clearly thats a stupid question and very basic but I'm hunting for an answer!
    Thanks so much.

Thanks. Tim. point taken and duly noted. On the mail-
so that means all i need to do is register the
domains and simply pay for the domain names on a
yearly basis. Then I ask the domain registration
company to point MX records to my server and thats
it? (of course..then I set up the server to host all
    the mail..)?
That's it. If you use a cheap DIY registration company then you will get access to your own DNS records and so add the MX record yourself. You may want to consider a secondary MX record for when the main server is down - dyndns.org offer this type of service or maybe the domain registration company can offer it. The secondary server service just holds the mail until it can deliver it to the main server.
It's certainly worth spending a bit of time with a temporary server and a few test domains until you understand the server config and have tested everything out.

  • Newbie to Mac, with a Stupid Question

Ok, I just bought and received my first Mac, a MacBook, two days ago (Windows Vista Victim). So far, it's going ok, but I'm still on the learning curve.
Here's my stupid question: What is the function of the four keys on the lower left corner (first row) of the keyboard? The first one says "fn", then "ctrl", then "alt/option", and then the Apple logo with another symbol. I'm sure I would get around to finding out, but a kickstart from you guys would be nice.
    Thanks in advance!
    Dirk in Florida
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    thats used for various reasons,
fn= on windows side fn + the volume button makes ur sound go up, down or off
ctrl=is used for editing purposes for windows platform, for example, ctrl + c = copy
Alt\options= its usually used for switching platforms on start up for example, what your computer is starting up hold options and it will ask u what to start up on
The apple button= on macintosh platform it allows you to do various short cuts (like the ctrl button on windows) for example, apple button + q = quit
Ok? if u have any other questions just ask

We are fellow users here on these user-to-user forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple.
If you can't remember your answers to your questions then if you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then the steps half-way down this page give you a reset link on your account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple in your country to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps half-way down the HT5312 link above to add a rescue email address for potential future use

  • Stupid Question...How do you install TurboTax???

OK, you know the saying about stupid questions, but this one will take the cake....
I downloaded the TurboTax file and it came in my Downloads folder under the filename "DL.img.sit".
Now I'm still a Mac rookie and I know some files you double click and thy install and others you drag in the application folder and it self installs.
However, this file does nothing...when I double-click it, it asks me to select an application and when I move it, all it does is move.
    Help
    Thanks..
    jc

John, that probably means you don't have Allume Systems' Stuffit Expander installed as the system is looking for a viable utility that will decompress the file.
Once decompressed the .img (disk image) will either be an installer or an application that you will drag and drop in your Applications folder.
    Hope this helps!

maybe a stupid question, but after 3 hours of digging i still can't figure out what does mean that package has a -svn extension....

    yes, thanks a lot....
So, tryng to install (in my situation) xfburn or ristretto requires some xfce pgks that are still unreleased and conflicts (of course) with the current releases... right??
