Aspect ratio for textures

I'm a novice at Live Type... I've imported a texture into FCE but it's showing in the canvas in 4:3 but the project is 16:9. How do I change this please?

Select the clip in the FCE Browser. Press command and 9 keys.
Locate Anamorphic in the left hand column.
Click next to Anamorphic in the Clip column to place a check mark there.

  • Correct Aspect Ratio for 4:3 and 16:9 SD output

    Hi guys,
I've built a slideshow in FC with HD settings (1440 x 1080px), exported via compressor and imported into DVDSP. That's all fine however . . .
The output requested is a DVD playable at 16:9 SD and this is where I have a small problem with the first tests I've done.
To cover all bases, my DVDSP settings are SD 4:3 and HD 1440 x 1080i, 16:9 PanScan and Letterbox. The end result played back on the Mac looks great and the aspect is spot on. The ultimate test was to play it on 2 different DVD players on 2 different PAL TVs and the result is world's apart even after playing with the respective aspect ratio adjustments on the TVs.
My problem is that I don't know what these DVDs will be played on and concerned they'll be cropped off or distorted and unwatchable.
Is there something I'm missing or a way to avoid this uncertainty? My deadline is imminent and any help would be priceless.
    thanks guys
    Chuck

What you should do for SD is export the FC timeline out to an SD preset (either PAL or NTSC as applicable) and you need to set the tracks to 16:9 Letterbox, not Pan & Scan or Pan & Scan Letterbox. The track will be 16:9 on 16:9 screens and letterboxed on 4:3 Screens. (You can also set up your own SD Compresser settings, make the aspect raito 16:9.)
People can always mess with settigs so there is no 100% way to ensure it will always look correct, but the above takes care of matters for the most part.
As an aside when you say world's apart, what was happening?

  • Aspect ratio for old full screen games, advice sought on buying new monitor

    Hi.
I'm thinking of buying a ThinkVision LT2252p to replace the old monitor my employer threw out because I've found the old one doesn't offer scaling of the aspect ratio meaning that my golden oldie full-screen-only PC games are all stretched out of shape to fit the entire monitor.
With the LT2252p, will a 1280 × 960 desktop (or a 1024 × 768 fullscreen game...) appear on the monitor with black bars at either side or with a black border all around? (I'm hoping that's what is meant by 'Same Aspect Ratio with input signal'.) Either way is good, just so long as a circle looks like a circle and not an oval.
If it's the case that I'm behind the times and the LT2252p is getting a bit long in the tooth, what would be a suitable alternative for a graphics card with VGA and DVI only?
    Thanks very much,
    Dave

Literally using Xmonad for the first time and I experienced some game issues with fullscreen. Specifically when running CS:GO I had a problem where the resolution was native to my monitor (1920x1080) it was running windowed and I couldn't find a way to resize it unless moving it to a blank workspace (so other windows don't infere with the mouse hook) and your then able to drag the window by xmonad commands:
    mod-button1
Set the window to floating mode and move by dragging
    mod-button2
Raise the window to the top of the stack
    mod-button3
Set the window to floating mode and resize by dragging

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I believe the linux native games on steam use the concept of '-windowed' by default.

  • Removing black bars from youtube/altering aspect ratios for youtube

How do you get rid of the black lines on the vid on youtube using I Movie 08? I have tried using the crop options in I movie, and still cant get rid of the back lines above and below. The cameras aspect ratio is 4:3 and using crop options of “fit” or “done” does not fix it. For example, here’s an exercise vid I did.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWgFDVI8Xs4
What is the cure for this? I notice when the vid is in the even library it’s in 4:3 as the source vid from the cam but is converted to 16:9 when moved to the project library. Is there any way to prevent that or convert it back to 4:3? I had thought the crop options in I movie would do the trick, but it does not from what I can tell.

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums
Is your project 4:3, you set this when you create your project. You can check this by looking at the project properties from the file menu.

  • Wrong aspect ratio for imported widescreen videos

When I import some videos (home made) they show up as the wrong aspect ratio. For example, the latest one is 1026x576 in the folder, which is correct, but shows up as 1456x576 which is too wide. How can I prevent this? Incidentally, I have checked the file in itunes folder using quicktime, and it is correctly sized at 1026 wide. Strangely, itunes thinks it's wider. Also, this is a problem I have found in previous versions of itunes. Phil

Hi, it's very strange. When I get time I will try different settings on Handbrake to see if there is any improvement. However I have even had this problem when outputting from fce. It seems to be a bug in iTunes. At least I'm not alone in experiencing the problem. Regards Phil

  • Aspect ratio for video assets

do all video assets need to maintain an aspect ratio of 3:2? for example, i have a QT movie (to be used as a menu header) that i animated in after effects that is 300x40. when i import this into DSP, the inspector says that it is 720x480 and the result is a distorted video. I have manipulated my AE file to maintain a 3:2 ratio (360x240) and that looks fine in DSP. However, the inspector still says that the video asset is 720x480. and, when i place it in a menu, i am prohibited from placing it exactly where i would like for it to be (due to the size of the drop zone). any thoughts or ideas?
    thanks in advance

    Dual 2GHz G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

yes, 4:3. sorry, i'm used to AE referring to a 720x480 as 3:2. it considers a 720x540 (sq pixels) as 4:3. old habit i guess.
when i change the drop zone's size by dragging the handles, it works fine unless i try to alter the width of the drop zone. for some reason, when i do that, it scales down the video asset.
i've also noticed that if i set up a livetype file in a nonstandard 4:3 size (like 300x40), DSP does the same thing to it as it did to the QT that was rendered in AE. it distorts it by stretching it vertically, causing it to look horrible in a drop zone that is the same size as the livetype file. i'm just trying to find easy and efficient ways to animate button text and menu headers without having to compose the enitre menu in AE. but i believe that you are right, i may be better off just doing it that way.
    thanks for the advice,

  • Sequence Aspect Ratio for HD

I am transferring HD video from AVCHD into FCP 6.0.4, and I need to know what the correct setting is for the aspect ratio (in the sequence preset editor). The footage is captured 1920x1080 at 30p. I plug that all in, but the only choice for plain HD at 16:9 is at 1440x1080. If I want to select 16:9 it's called HDTV 1080i???
Can someone help me understand why there is not a setting for HD 1920x1080 in that window? Is it normal for me to have to select 1440x1080? Even though all the other settings are at 1920x1080???
Also, do i have to check anamorphic 16:9?
    Thanks in advance!

    I'm sorry, I'm a bit confused.
this time I set up my session/sequence to be for 1440x1080, transferred the media into the session. When I drag my first clip into the Canvas - the FCP pops up a window saying that the clip and the sequence don't match. I tell it to correct it - and it puts it back to the 1920x1080 - HDTV 1080i setting.
What am I doing wrong? Should I be converting it differently?
And which is correct - anamorphic or no???
    Thanks

  • Need help changing size and aspect ratio for 500+ images

Thank you for reading this! I have about 500 images of people in different poses. They're all extracted on a transparency as PNGs. They vary in aspect ratio, dimensions and position of the person within the frame - for some the feet are very close to the bottom of the frame and for some, they're higher up. I need to equalize all 3 of these qualities, so that if superimposed, they look like a video unfolding with the same zoom. My ideal size would be 800x800 at 300ppi.
Is there a way to batch even a part of the process and keep the png format? I had the images in PSD initially but they were too massive so creating catalogs with them was prohibitive.
If not possible to do a batch, what would be the best (easiest) and fastest way to do it? I'm thinking that maybe creating some template where an oval shape the size of the head can help create consistency of the size of the person and a line that helps set up the distance from the bottom?
I so appreciate any help you have to offer. Part of my problem is that I don't know what these processes are called so I don't even know what to search for. If you can even name the actions that I need, it would be of great help. I already paid a designer to do the extraction and they were supposed to do this formatting as well and they didn't so my budget is shot. I'm hoping that if I understand what the steps are, I can do them myself.
    Thank you!

If you download my crafting actions package you can record an action that uses one of my plug-in scripts to do that process. You could then batch that action and process your 500 png image files.

  • How do I trim a .WAV file in iMovie 09?  / Proper aspect ratio for iPhone

    Hi,
I have a .WAV file that I want to use in my project but I need to trim off the first 1/4. How do I do the using iMovie 09?
Also I shot all of this with an iPhone. Which aspect ratio should I choose... It will be played on a WideScreen TV.
    Thanks.

I would use 16:9 for aspect ratio.

  • Text and aspect ratio for creating it in Photoshop

    Hi there,
I am doing something that will be displayed via a laptop. I am making titles and text blocks in photoshop, because the text feature in FCE looks quite bad with scrolling or animated texts. I am confused about the aspect ratio. For something that is going to be played on a laptop>projector, would i create the text in 720x480 OR 740x540. Thanks for your help, i really appreciate it.
    Karen

    Karen,
If you will be viewing on a TV or burning a DVD, you need to account for the rectangular pixels of that output. If you will be using Quicktime to view the movie to a projector, you will need use a different aspect ratio.
    So: TV/DVD
    Create image at 720x540
    Add text
Image Size, unclick Constrain, size to 720x480
Add to FCE. Go to Motion:Distort:Aspect Ratio:0
    Quicktime:
    Create image at 720x480
Add to FCE - Image will look sqeezed, but will be fine in QT.
Personally I would use the text creators in FCE. Remember, text will look BAD until it is rendered and output. Preview on Canvas is not good.
    Hope this helps.

  • Aspect ratio for stills in a video - Pre 11

My camcorder is set to 16:9 aspect ratio.  Pre11 seems to know that and automatically uses that format.  My still camera is usually set to 4:3.  I frequently add some stills to my videos at the end - add some music and use cross dissolve transitions.  Those pictures keep their 4:3 aspect ratio (which I personally like for most stills).
I am new to Pan & Zoom.  I notice that when using Pan & zoom the keyframes are 16:9 ratio.  This sometime requires too much cropping (especially if the still was a close-up).  Is there a way to make PRE11 use 4:3 ratio for stills using pan & zoom?

Select your still on your timeline, then click the Adjust button to open the Adjustments panel. Open the Motion properties, then click the Show Keyframe Controls button (the stop watch) in the upper right corner of the panel.
I show you step by step how to keyframe motion path pan & zooms in my books, if you're interested.

  • IPhoto slideshow has wrong aspect ratio for iMovie and/or FCP

When I output a slideshow at 720x480 from iPhoto then import it into iMovie or FCP, the images are stretched vertically. I can adjust the ratio in FCP (-10 seems to be a good number), but there is no fix for iMovie. I like the iPhoto slideshow capability and prefer using it for my slideshows. What do I do to get an unstretched QT for import into iMovie or FCP?
    AGP Powermac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

You're encountering a difference between rectangular DV pixels and square "computer screen image" pixels.
When working with DV timelines, the best way to get good frame grabs would be to export your 720 x 480 still, then re-size it to 640 x 480 using Photoshop. (BTW, you can use a Photoshop batch function to re-size multiple images automatically.)
If you're starting with a timeline that only contains square-pixel (not DV video) images, try this:
Sequence > Settings > General Tab
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
    Now:
Open a clip in the Viewer window, and look under
    Motion Tab > Distort Pane
    Aspect Ratio should = 0
[Under certain conditions, FCP makes educated guesses as to the pixel aspect ratios of imported images, and uses this setting to automatically apply corrective distortion when it believes it is necessary. Usually it is correct, but under unusual circumstances like your project, you may have to correct FCP's correction.]
The fastest way to confirm this would be to
    Select All
    Ctrl-Click
    Remove Attributes
    Check "Distortion"
[If it is greyed out it means that none of your clips have any distortion applied so you are good to go.]
Now you can export un-distorted frames from a square-pixel timeline, and shouldn't experience any pixel-aspect ratio confusion.
    Good luck,

  • Can you 'force" change aspect ratio for DVD player 4.0?

    Hi,
I have burnt a dvd-r from my pioneer hdd/dvd recorder (630H). The program is in 16:9 ratio but plays at 4:3 on my powerbook dvd player 4. (All other dvd-r burnt via other burners appear OK however - so I guess this is something peculiar to the Pioneer) Why is this?. Question is: is there any way to "force" the apple dvd player to change aspect ratios? Thanks for any assistance.

I've got about 20 video tracks and one audio track all laid out and I've decided I'd like to insert something before the audio track so if I move the audio track everything else will be off.  Is there a way to shift all the video tracks and the audio track over to the right to make room for the inserted video?

  • How to keep aspect ratio for different sized resolutions?

If I have a 1280 x 800 resolution widescreen moniter, and I have this fullscreen game that likes to run in 800 x 600 but I don't like the way that the game stretches across the whole widescreen moniter. The only way for me to keep everything in a good aspect ratio is to put my resolution at 1280 x 800 but the game doesn't like that.
Would there be a way to set it so that the 800 x 600 resolution is set to have the correct aspect ratio rather than being stretched across the widescreen?  ie, so it looks like a square with black spots on both sides.
I heard that a modeline generator would be the thing I want, but I'm not sure how I should go about this stuff. If you have any reading on it, please give it to me.

Thank you very much. I never thought to look in the BIOS.
There wasn't an option to keep aspect ratio and stretch but I was able to center it rather than stretching.
Now my framebuffer boot up got centered, I need to find out how to make the framebuffer bootup be 1280x800 rather than 1024x768. This should be simple, but the guide in the sample menu.lst only gives square-y resolutions.

  • Best Aspect Ratio for Most DVD Players?
