ATI Radon xt800 vs. stock ATI 1900

Good day.
My new Mac pro came with of course the 1900. Now, from another system, I have a fairly new ATI xt800 for the G5.
Can someone tell me the pro's and con's of why I would want to install the xt800 in the Mac Pro instead of selling it?
Thanks tons!!!
Tom

This is a non-question. You can't use the X800XT in the Mac Pro -- it's AGP and the Mac Pro requires PCI-Express, plus it has the wrong BIOS.

  • ATI 1900 for Mac Pro 1.1

After the second NVidia 8800 GT burning up within a month, I am thinking of replacing it with an ATI 1900. Any thoughts about that?

The first card burned up because it was a cheap, refurbished card from someone who hawks them on eBay. I thought it was a deal for only $160 and paid dearly for that. The card lasted only a few days. I received a replacement for that one from the supplier and that one lasted three weeks before it died. It didn't burn up like the first one, but shorted out.
I had the computer diagnosed by an Apple-certified shop when I had the problems with the first 8800 GT to make sure it's the card and not another part of the computer. This test revealed bad memory on the card as the problem. Since the second card grew on the same tree I expect it to have the same disease. The computer starts up fine without the card and shuts down instantly when I insert it into the slot.
I did some researching for the ATI HD 4870 and found it to be what I need; particularly that its mini DisplayPort works on a Mac Pro 1.1, which the one on the 5770 doesn't do. The local Apple Store has it in stock, so I'll pick one up later today.

  • Instruction of replacing a ATI 1900 for ATI 4870 on MacPro 2,1

Where can I get visual instruction on installing a ATI 4870 which will replace a ATI 1900 on MacPro 2,1?
    Thanks

Assuming it's the card made for Mac (and not a PC card that's been altered/flashed to work in a Mac Pro), it really ought to work.
Drivers for the card aren't available separately anymore. You're absolutely right, they're built into Snow Leopard, but they should also be built into Leopard as well. It's possible that something mucked up the driver installation, to check it simply download and install the 'combo updater' for the most recent version of Mac OS that you're using.
For Leopard, get the 10.5.8 combo updater here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL866
For Snow Leopard, get 10.6.3 v1.1 combo updater here http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1017
    Hope that helps!

  • ATI 1900

I am not planning to load Windows on my Mac, use it mainly for music, internet and casual gaming ( Apple games not Windows games ), I suppose for this the ATI 1900 would be sufficient and I do not really have to worry about a bigger graphics card.
Would like your opinions about this please.
    Thanks

    Hi Freddie,
I have bought my Mac Pro with the X1900 card for the 'old' Windows games I already owned (latest was Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion).
And it still runs fantastically fast with it in 1600x1200 resolution with all details set to high.
Did try the Prey Demo with the same settings and the resulting FPS (frames per second) were superb.
Although I find myself glimpsing at the new Nvidia 8800, I am very happy with the ATI and am quite sure that I stick with it for a long time.

  • ATI 1900 XT Card Settings for Dual 30" Displays?

Just installed the 1900 card with dual 30" monitors, and a window giving me 4 options appeared. I'm not sure what the differences are... which setting will give me the maximum speed for Aperture?

    Check these

Read the about the Expansion Slot manager in Apple Help.
I have the ATI 1900 XT in slot 4 and 16x, but if barefeats is true slot 3 ans 8x is nearly as fast. It depends a lot on waht other PCI express cards you have installed and how fat you need to run these.

I've got this weird problem it looks like this
    http://support.elgato.com/index.php?m=knowledgebase&a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=3097
in my video windows on FCP. I Have OS 10.5.5, QT 7.5.5. It's a G5 with an ATI 1900 video card. The strange thing is if I click on the finder the issue goes away but then if I click on the FCP screens it comes back. I've trashed prefs, done cahce cleaning, repaired permissions.
I've been searching this problem out and have seen no recent (Since last week 10/9 ish) reports.
    Any solutions? Please advise.

  • ATI 1900 - any other sources?

I didn't want to wait for the LONG delay on my MP when upgrading to the 1900XT and I also like to have a backup vid card in the draw at all times. So I ordered my machine with the default nVidia 7300. Now I was wondering why ATI has the 1900XT in stock on their own website yet Apple delays shipping for 5-6 weeks I think if you upgrade your system config.
Is this a MAC EDITION ATI 1900XT ??
Or will any 1900XT work on my MP?

I waiting out the X1900 delay, but I am fairly certain it will turn to be the right decision.
Vista may support EFI when it ships. But finding an off the shelf EFI equipped video card is the real problem with what you propose. The only workable solution at the moment is to buy a 7300 equipped Mac Pro and buy the X1900 upgrade from Apple later.
Word of note to all of us waiting - most Apple products do require a bit of patching and tuning up over the first 3 months of their lives to squeeze the most performance out of them. I urge everyone to be aware of this, and be patient. There is sometimes a price for being an early adopter.

  • ATI 1900 versus 2600

Wonder why the Mac Pro is proposed with ATI 2600 graphic cards only,
and not with the 1900, which performs better. Is there a way to ask
Apple to equip the machine with 1900 instead ? Should I buy it separately
    and have it installed ?

I will finally chose the iMac 3, 06 Ghz for replacement.
Which is the best card for the iMac 3,06 Ghz and Aperture ?
Nvidia 88800 or still the ATI 2600 ?
It seems the ATI benchmark is superior.

  • ATI 1900 XT dead

My ATI 1900XT in my trusty 2006 2x2.66 Mac Pro has now gone to the happy hunting ground -- it will sometimes work, but most of the time, it just pumps a couple milliseconds of vertically sheared video out to the monitor and then goes black again. Thank the maker for Back To My Mac, or I wouldn't be able to get any work done at all! But, this needs to get resolved pronto.
I've found a couple of 1900XT units available used on eBay, but I'm thinking I'd like to take the opportunity to upgrade the rig a bit if possible. This is my work machine, and its graphics abilities are used for video editing - so a card that plays nicely with Final Cut and iMovie/iDVD and such is essential. Added features could be really nice too, such as a composite or s-video input, or a digital TV tuner - but those aren't mission-critical, as I could hook up my elgato eyetv to take care of those duties when need be.
Any suggestions on cards I could look into that would work well on this old box?

this is a great tip! somehow i didn't see that announcement! once i get back to the office after vacation, i'm going to pull out the card and check the serial number -- hopefully it's part of the program! if not, i'll find me a 5770
    thanks!

  • ATI 1900 performance?

I know the first few ATIs have hit the ground - wondering about performance under OSX & XP. Hopefully, nothing but good news...

I see thoes momentary freezes on my MacBook Pro but I
do not see them on my Mac Pro. I was in SL four
about 3 hours today and didn't encounter even one of
    thoes freezes.
That's -very- interesting. This means that the freezes and pauses people are seeing with the 7300GT cards (universally, I might add) are directly related to... the 7300GT.
Or the Mac OS build? Can you check to see what your build is? Word is there is a newer build shipping than what most of us got initially (which was 8K1079).
I have low hopes for anyone over 2GB of RAM, however, due to the problems with PAE. I'm definitely looking forward to testing more.

  • Installing Catalyst XP Drivers for ATi 1900 -- A Precautionary Tale

I downloaded the latest X1900 drivers for XP (running via BootCAmp) after I installed my X1900 - I didn't use the XP drivers CD made when Boot Camp runs.
It completely trashed my installation -- I simply couldn't get my two displays to function properly. One was always displaying a horizontally-squashed screen, or just not even getting to login. I tried booting into Safe Mode and using the Mac XP Drivers CD there -- not even the InstallShield could run properly. I tried installing the ATi Catalyst drivers in Safe Mode -- no way. "correct driver not found..." (I'd uninstalled the ATi drivers previously).
I ended up having to wipe my BC partition and re-install. Then use Mac XP drivers CD to install ATi drivers.
Now, every time I change an Appearances setting I get a message saying that "This driver is meant for an older version of Windows. The default VGA driver is being used instead." Which it isn't -- I have all the ATi options.
Anyone had any luck using driver updates direct from ATi's site?
Any idea why I'm getting this message?
    TIA,
    Mac Pro 2.0 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.9) 6GB RAM, 160/320/320/320 HD, GeForce 7300 / ATi X1900 XT

    Thanks, Stefan --
    I didn't de-install the nVidia drivers!!! D'oh...on
the OS X side, I can just swap between the cards at
will, the correct drivers get loaded.
Yeah, one of the advantages of OSX over Windows. Windows tend to react very weird when changing graphics card and not deinstalling everything related to the old one beforehand.
Also, I didn't know about the .NET requirement...the
Catalyst installation didn't say anything about
that...although it did say I needed DirectX 8 -- but
since I don't play games, I assume that I can skip
    that part?
Usually the Catalyst installation doesn't mention the .NEt, but when you want to use the Control Center it comes up with an error.
DirectX is a bit more than just for games, as it is a sort of layer between the application and the real hardware (e.g. graphics card), so I would propose getting the latest DirectX 9 package from the Microsoft website.
Also, how are you coping with the noise? My silent
    cooler is working very nicely...
Coming from a long range of graphics card im my PC heydays, I had cards that were more silent and ones that were louder.
In fact before my switch to the MacPro in October 06 I had a PC with AMD 64-CPU and an ATI X1800 graphics card and in comparison the MacPro is less noisy.
And the ATI fan only kicks in, when I'm stressing it, so I can live with that.
    TIA,
You're welcome (BTW: when do you come to Cologne ?)

  • ATI 1900 dying on my 1st gen Mac Pro.  Looking at options.

It seems like the three easy options are another 1900, an 8800GT, or a 3870. I know there are other options if I feel like flashing (and spending a lot of money), but I'm not looking to get too crazy.
I've tried looking around, but can't get a clear answer to my basic question: which of these three will be best for apps like Aperture and Photoshop (if it ever starts using Core Image)?
I read on barefeets that the 8800GT is reall bad for pro apps, but that is old info. Are the drivers better?
The 3870 seems like it's getting good reviews... is that an option over the 1900?
Or should I just get another 1900 and be done with it?
Or, is there something else relatively inexpensive that would give me good Pro App performance?
    Thanks for any input.

    Hi welcher,
As a photographer, still using wet film and scanning with a dedicated film scanner my 7300gt failed at the start of this year and I was presented with the same situation. At that time I opted for the 8800gt card which I got from the apple store in the uk. I can say that it gives me excellent colours in CS2. I have tried Aperture and may get it later on this year. Again i like the colours. The screen is set up to give adobe 1998 gamut. I have a 24 inch LG screen and a 2.66 pro. No doubt it could be better, however, I am more than happy with it.
I had to get the latest OSX dvd from apple as I had to do a re-install the other day and my old osx dvd was'nt accepted as the drivers were old. Hope this is of some help,
    Dave

  • NVIDIA 7300 vs ATI HD 2600 (on iMac)

Trying to compare the current top-end iMac to the current bottom-end Mac Pro. It's quite tricky! My particular area of interest is editing High Def videos in FCE. Also running Parallels with Windows XP.
I'm curious to know how the iMac's ATI Radeon HD 2600 compares to the NVIDIA 7300 GT. I know that the ATI 1900 is supposed to run rings around the NVIDIA, but what about the HD 2600?
Also, how can one compare the 2.8GHz Core2 extreme to a pair of 2.66 "Woodcrests"?
I really like the expandability of the Mac Pro (the first thing I'd do is sling a couple of 1TB disks in).
Of course I'm also watching what upgrades come out this quarter, but money IS an issue, and I'm hoping that we'll see a lot of cheap current generation Mac Pro's around that I could buy with 24" screen for a similar amount of money as a comparable iMac.

The 8800GT is known to be a killer performer, only being around 10% slower than their fastest card, the 8800 Ultra.
It is also, roughly, 2X faster than the X1900 XT. I can;t wait for Apple to sell the upgrade.
The rest of the Mac Pro's - comparing the 3.0 GHz Harpertown vs my current 3.0 Clovertown shows almost no difference - 10% or so. I am surprised with all the extra memory bandwidth and the greater cache and the faster dividers and all that the speed difference is so low.
The 2.8 Harpertowns are essentially as fast as the 3.0 Clovertown's, perhaps even faster. Faster still with the 8800GT card, yet almost $1,000 cheaper than the 3.0 system was yesterday - and with BT and an extra GB of RAM to boot.
I'd say that's a great move by Apple.

It said 2-3 days last time I checked. Your order status should show you the estimated Ship Date and Delivery Date.
I have used 2-day and overnight shipping from Apple and always got my money's worth. Both my recent Macs were delivered ahead of schedule.

  • New Mac Pro setup questions..

    Hi,
Just pulled the trigger on a Mac Pro 3gh, 4gb, ATI 1900. I am going to that from a dual 1.42 quicksilver and had some questions.
It seems migration assistant may not be the best way to go. Is this true, should I reinstall everything? Is it possible to drag and drop apps to the new machine?
Is it possible to get mail info from another machine to the new one? I have an iMac at home that I have been using Mail with and would like all the email addresses on the new machine at work. My old setup, I was still using Enterouge (sp) and would like to use Mail like at home.
I have the stock 250gb drive and I need to figure out different drive scenarios. I recently bought two external 500gb drives before even thinking about a new system. I am a commercial photographer and one drive is a backup that lives offsite from my studio for protection. Should I mirror with an external?
    Thanks for any help!

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.
