ATS files in cache hang system at startup

We have this inconsistent problem happening on all our Mac's (10.4.10). The problem does not happen each day or consecutive days. Here is what happens. Start the Mac in the morning. When it get's past the startup screen and then starts the load the desktop and finder etc. It just hangs. What you see is the spotlight icon in top right but the rest of the menu bar does not show up. None of the desktop icons appear either. If you move the mouse towards spotlight you see it is the spinning ball. What we do then is hard shutdown the Mac then restart in safe boot mode. Once the Mac is running clean out the files in caches for ATS in library, then ATS caches in system/library. Restart the Mac and everything is normal.
Some how this hang up is related to the ATS cache files but not sure how it hangs the system?
Anyone else have this problem? It is causing us a growing frustration some of our operators are leaving the computer running overnight as to not have to deal with the issue when they turn on the Mac.
Thanks
Steve

Well, if it is working now...
You could check to see what the version of the Finder is as it is not reported in the crash log. The application is here:
/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder; the version should be 10.6.7. If you suspect a problem caused by updating to 10.6.6, then I suggest downloading and installing the Combo update.

  • Backup files on Cache Shutdown

    Hi, I am using Partitioned Cache for my cluster of 8 nodes. One of my requirements is write the cache to a file on shutdown and on startup load the cache from that file. So, if all the cache server nodes are shutdown and brought back up again, I want the cache to have the same state as it was before shutdown

    Thanks for your response. I will look into CacheStore for fulfilling our backup needs.
         I have other questions on Local Overflow cache config. Appreciate if you can answer them.As you can see from my configuration file, I have my backing-map defined by an overflow scheme which writes to a local file after inital 10(will be increased in prod context) entries as defined below
         <backing-map-scheme>
         <overflow-scheme>
         <scheme-ref>SampleOverflowScheme</scheme-ref>

         <lh-file-manager/>
         </external-scheme>
         </back-scheme>
         </overflow-scheme>
         Can you please clarify the below questions about my local overflow cache configuration
         - Is it advisable to have an Overflow scheme (written to the same NFS file by all nodes) for a Distributed Cache setup? Our admin says that one of the applications had a problem with file handlers when they did this and are advising against it. Are there any known problems doing it and can you please advise what overflow scheme works well with partitioned/Distributed Cache.
         -As you can see above, I did not specify the the local file in <lh-file-manager/> . In that case, can you let us know which file that it will overflow to? Also, is it advisable to specify the filename in configuration or should I leave it as above?
         Thanks,
         Ravi

  • Starting a java program on System boot/startup

    Hi,
    I am trying to find out how to start a java program on system startup which basically spawns a Thread which in turn does some processing.
    Came across windows specific options which help one make it as a service.Making a .bat for windows and .sh for linux could be a option but not sure where to put these in respective OS or whether it is a good option.
    If someone has tried out similar thing please let me know the details for the same.
    Regards
    Raj

    [codes]

  • Flash Builder 4.5.1 for Mac hanging/crashing during startup "Loading Workbench"

    Hello,
    I'm having ongoing trouble with Flash Builder 4.5.1 hanging/crashing during startup.
    Sometimes the following Terminal command fixes the issue:
    cd ~/Documents/Adobe\ Flash\ Builder\ 4.5/cascaded/308971/configuration/.settings
    rm org.eclipse.ui.ide.prefs
    However this isn't a silver bullet solution, and sometimes the only way is to uninstall and reinstall FB4.5.
    But this is a major hassle, especially after 3 or 4 times!
    I am running Mac OS X 10.7 and have updated to FB 4.5.1 Premium and also installed Subversion/Subclipse as well as the BlackBerry PlayBook SDK.
    Problems seem to occur when working in SVN projects.
    I have also noticed that the Delete and Arrow keys and Right Click fails to work sometimes also.
    Is there a way to reset / clear FB 4.5 Prefs / Workbench?
    Thanks,
    David Douglas

    Delete the Adobe Flash Builder 4.5 folder from your Documents (assuming you don't have anything valuable in there). That seemed to work for me, as I don't keep my projects in there but there were some temp files that were breaking it. You'll probably have to re-inport your projects.

  • If I secure my browser using CISecurity's baseline for Firefox, can I copy all the ".js" files from the hardened system to another?

    I own multiple systems. I have hardened one browser following the guideline provided by CISecurity. Instead of repeating all the configurations performed on that one system, can I just copy all the ".js" files from the secured system to my other systems?
    The ".js" files can be modified using a text editor. Is there a way to lock down these files to prevent modification?

    Dear Joel
    i know two ways to prevent browser from caching your files
    First : The Hard way
    just add ? +Math.random()  in the end of your file
    Like this :
    in HTML :
    <script type="text/javascript">
    (function(){
         var e = document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0];
         var d = document.createElement("script");
         d.src = "index_edgePreload.js?"+Math.random()+"";
         d.type = "application/javascript";
         d.async = true;
         d.defer = true;
         e.parentNode.insertBefore(d,e);
    </script>
    instead of this Line in HTML that created by EA :
    <script type="application/javascript" src="index_edgePreload.js></script>
    Disadvantage : you should do this for all of files you want to prevent from caching
    ===================================================
    Second : The easyest way
    You Should have Access to .htaccess file in your Server
    Open your .htaccess file and paste these codes in it :
    ExpiresActive On
    ExpiresByType application/json "access plus 1 seconds"
    ExpiresByType text/json "access plus 1 seconds"
    ExpiresByType text/plain "access plus 1 seconds"
    ExpiresDefault "access plus 1 month"
    you can type what ever type of file you want to prevent from caching in browser
    Advantage : after do this in your .htaccess file all files with the type you want will not Cache in your browser
    Easy is'nt it ?

  • Why does Encore copy the file into Cache?

    It seems that Encore will copy the m2v file into ProjectDir/Cache\Media Cache Files\mlf.cache.MACC
    The file is rather large, nearly 4 GB (2gb for each ac3 file).
    I used to run the previous version and I don't think it makes copy in Cache.
    Why does Encore do that?
    Any way to make Encore just use the m2v file directly without copying it into Cache?
    Thanks!

    Same prob for me. Very annoying becuz the program itself is very useful, probably the best dvd menu making system ever but I was tryin to set up an audio dvd wit my own design, prepared sound files like converted them all to ac3 format but every time it is the same, despite deleting cache, the program recreates and doubles these unknown file types of large size taking up irrationally large space. A normal dvd size of 4.7 gbytes to set up would in this case require 50 gbytes or more as I have calculated. More than ten times larger than one dvd. Ridiculous.
    If there's no need for transcode by file format ac3, then why should they time after time be stored in cache mostly taking up double space ? It should be working as cd or dvd write where you're offered two options, either creating an image file on hard disk or on the fly which doesn't take any space of the disk and is more direct.
    So what should I do now ? Look for another program or surrender this one and let it eat up more than 50 gigas ?
    Awful situation is I don't have time to look after programs.
    But I ain't got this amount of disk space either.
    My project must be ready in a few days but no hope for that like this.
    Help me, it's urgent. Thank you.

  • My system showing startup disk full. I am using mac book pro retina display 15"

    I would like to know how to clean the startup disk. The system showing startup disk is full and not opening files in photoshop and other softwares. I was trying to upgrade OS X Mavericks it required 4.99 gb space. available is 1.99 only.  I have connected an external HD but it is showing readable only cant able to copy or delete files. But previously it was copying and removing. Please help

    To fix your external drive try reformatting it with Disk Utility.  (This assumes there is no data on it now that you wish to keep because it will erase the drive.)
    Your disk space is low enough that you are in danger of not being able to boot the machine.  You are on the right track trying to offload some files to an external disk.

  • [SOLVED]Create .service file to load powertop settings at startup.

    Hi I installed powertop and ran it
    sudo powertop -html
    and the recommendations I got, i pasted them in a file, and saved it as startup.sh, and made it executable.
    Now with init, i could write it in /etc/rc.local so that it would be called automatically at startup, but with systemd,
    I think one would need to create a systemd service file which could be enabled for startup,and would call the startup.sh file.
    Can anyone help with creating the .service file, or alternatively, suggest a simpler method for loading powertop's reccomendations at startup? Thanks!

    Really, this should be done with the tools that are inherently in the system.  So it should be achieved with module options, udev rules, sysctl.d/sysctl.conf, and in some cases, tmpfiles.d.
    See this wiki page to get an idea of how to get this stuff going.
    You can use some kind of rc.local service if you want.  But it is probably moer appropriate to have these things load only if necessary.  For example, if there is a power saving option for my ethernet card, but I choose to only load the module when I need it (therefore blacklist it) in order to really save power, it would be silly to have a script that tries to write values to a directory in /sys/class/net that doesn't exist.
    Alternatively, you could use something like laptop-mode-tools, which allows one to have these settings turned on or off depending on the A/C state of the machine. But I really think that with machines these days, there is really not much of a difference whether these power saving functions are on or off, in terms of an average users computing experience.

  • Cache Management System

    Bridge
    definitely needs a cache management system whereby a user can, via whatever means, clean out old cache data. I process hundreds of thousands of images per year, constantly deleting files, archiving them to CD, etc. Remnants of those activities are left in the centralized cache and old references need to be cleaned out. Sometimes it's obvious as to which cache data belons to what, other times not.
    I'm currently sitting on top of 2.5 gig of obsolete cache data that needs to be cleaned up. So whether it's a UI or a more logical naming convention of info in the cache folder, we need to be able to manage it.
    Peace,
    Tony

    And as long as I'm at it, how about a function/button/technique to "Stop creating thumbs temporarily". In ACDSee, you can stop thumb generation in browser mode by double clicking on the progress bar. In PS7's file browser, you could do it by pressing escape during the building of the cache. Sure would be nice not to have your machine choke while it does it's business, and just grab the file(s) you want.

  • Why does Firefox create so many temp files in cache? Once it filled up entire free HD space (46GB)?

    Every now & then, Firefox will have created zillions of directories and files in Cache within the directory for a Firefox profile. The directories are called 0 (zero) through F (using the hex numbers as names, i.e.g), and within each of these will be more directories (with two digit hex names). The last time this happened (1 week ago), these directories ate up ALL of my free hard drive space (about 46 GB worth).
    Why does this happen? Can I stop it from happening? If so, how?
    THanks.

    Yes it should be easy to reset.
    It may be set from
    * '''Options -> | Advanced | -> |Network| -> Cached Web Content''' <br /> [] Override automatic cache management
    * see [[#w_cached-web-content]]'''_cached-web-content'''
    Presumably your automatic setting has been overridden and the box needs unchecking.
    I know Firefox does split the cache up like that IIRC it allows the cache to be faster and solves fragmentation issues.
    46GB That seems a surprising amount and can not be right if it eats up all hard disk space. I also know that the file places.sqlite is a variable size, but that is based on the system in use.
    The ordinary HTTP cache is also set presumably intelligently, but can be over-ridden by the user
    This has some background info
    * https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/HTTP_Caching_FAQ
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.cache.disk.capacity
    My own settings as viewed in about:support are
    browser.cache.disk.capacity 358400
    browser.cache.disk.smart_size_cached_value 266240
    browser.cache.disk.smart_size.first_run false
    My cache use is limited to about 350MB

    >X-Fi + 2 GFX-Cards = high CPU-Load, slow Mouse, hanging systemA Hey guys,
    I'm running 2 GF 8800 GTs (PCIe .) cards on a MSI Eclipse SLI board. My Audigy2 ZS PCI runned fine in this system.
    I just replaced the Audigy by a PCIe X-Fi (EMU20K2 audio processor - not the xtreme audio from MSI).
    Now I'm dealing with the following issue:
    - System startup is slow
    - in Windows, Mouse is slow, stuttering
    - high CPU-Load
    - very slow system response
    !!! Attention !!! I had this problems allready at the st boot with the X-Fi, when the driver from creative wasn't installed (the card was recognized as "HD Audio" bei Windows 7). Installing the drivers didn't help.
    If I install only one graphics card, the system runns fine and I can use the X-Fi and it's Software without problems.
    If I replace the X-Fi by the PCIe Xtreme Audio from MSI, System runns fine.
    If I use Win XP with the two GFX cards and the X-Fi, System runns fine.
    Can you help me?

    One GTX260 runs also fine with the X-FI
    But two graphic cards and the X-FI..... **bleep** =/
    I use debian as my main OS and it run still fine with both graphic cards and the x-fi...

  • Reconnect to other systems on startup?

    Hi, our Macs our hooked up locally through Samba.
    My first Mac experience. I'm accessing files on several different systems but lose the network connection everytime I restart.
    My question is, once I connect, is there any way to automate the reconnect on startup? There are several steps to the reconnect for each connection, (authenticate, submit, submit) so it seems like this shouldn't be a manual process.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Are you using Access Connections?
    There is a setting in Access Connections which can influence file and printer sharing. If you look at the profile's further settings, there is an entry for network security, file and printer sharing needs to be activated.
    I think this is a great feature of AC as it will override the windows settings, you can choose to allow or block in each profile; e.g. allowed at home, but blocked at the Airport or Hotel.

  • System Preferences Startup Disk Vs. Boot with Option key depressed.

    External FW drive connected via standard 400 FW cable, is recognized by System Preferences>Startup Disk, proving that it contains a valid OS X system. But when selected, and clicking Restart, first in the System Preferences>Startup Disk window, then in the modal dialogue, the computer beeps, but does not restart. Same behavior when the computer's internal drive is selected.
    The only way to select a startup disk is booting the computer (select Restart from Apple Menu) holding the Option key, clicking the required icon, and then clicking the arrow at the right end of the window.
    I have run DiskWarrior, zapped the PRAM (that should take care of startup settings), no change.
    Sum up: System Preferences>Startup Disk does not perform.
    Powerbook PPC.

    Charly,
    there might be a timing problem. At the time when the Mac PRAM asks for the startup disk the firewire disk might not be "present" yet. Can you turn on the external disk manually?
    Does the preference pane "remember" your selection of the startup disk or does it change it back to the internal disk?
    You might want to run some system maintenance, especially clean the caches: Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance

  • How can I get "all my files" to recognize files in a non system drive?

    I use a Mac Pro with four internal drives, OSX 9.2. My system drive is an SSD so I keep user files on another drive in an adjacent bay.
    Files in my non-system disc are not displayed in the "all my files" finder view. If I copy a file from the system disc to my user disc, the copy is not recognized, and when I trash the original, of course, there is no reference to either. If I search, spotlight finds it. This behavior seems to apply to all files and is regardless of anything selected in the sidebar before "all my files". I have not marked any files, folders or drives as private. I presume I must have a set a pref wrong. I would really appreciate any advice.
    Thank you.

    To change the program that .indd files default to when opened in OSX, right click on the .indd file > Open With > Other.
    Then navigate to the version of InDesign that you want to open them with (I have CS6 installed but its the same for CS5). Make sure you have "Always Open With" selected.
