Attaching an Auto Incrementer to an existing table

Hi!
Have a few tables orders of records of which I need not to change and add an auto-increment sort of additional field to help in sort and manipulate the same. Any idea how to achieve the same???

Auto Increment column in database table

Hello experts, I am using oracle 11g database at windows 7.I have to create a sequence object and a table with an auto increment ID column.For this I have created a trigger before insert to select next sequence from a sequence object. It works well but Now I have the current sequence is 7 and there are 6 records inserted in table. Now I delete two records.Thus I have only 5 records in table but my current sequence is still 7.So if I put it in id column then a new record will be inserted in table with 7 ID number after 5th ID number.I want this record should be inserted with 6 Id number. For this I tried to not use sequence object.I tried a pl/sql trigger before insert, which will count the all records in table and after increment i put it in ID column to insertion....Is this a professional way..? thank You regards aaditya

Sequences only guarantee unique numbers. You cannot (and should not) attempt to create gapless sesquences. That's not how oracle works and will not scale to a multi user application.
Imagine two people try to insert records at the same time (and have yet to commit), the trigger you create will count the number of records and determine there are 5 records, so assign the next number of 6, for both people who are inserting records. The first person to commit will get their data saved, and assuming you have a unique constriaint on that id, the second person will raise a duplicate key on insert or suchlike error.
Gapless sequential numbers are not appropriate to multi-user environments. Such requirements are often given by managers or business people who do not understand the technology.
Think of it in terms of a real world office, but with people using a paper system instead of a computer. The only way you can try to guarantee people get the next number and also re-use numbers that have been deleted is to have a single place where each person in the office goes to, to fetch the next number, and they have to queue up behind each other to get the next one off the list. But if someone has removed an old record, they've got to wait in the same queue to go and put that number back in the pot for someone else to use. It just doesn't work, even in a manual system. Yes, people can guarantee that they're only getting unique numbers that nobody else is using, but they cannot guarantee that they are reusing and filling gaps etc. It's an unrealistic expectation.

Creating an auto incrementing field with CREATE TABLE from Java

I'm using the "sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver" to get a connection towards an ODBC data source that's linked to a Access (.mdb) database.
I've tried various combinations in my CREATE TABLE statement execution in order to create a table with an auto incrementing integer but neither of them work, not even the most obvious one:
stmt.executeUpdate("CREATE TABLE mytable(uid integer AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY);");
I always get this runtime exception: *java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Syntax error in field definition*; and AUTO_INCREMENT is the problem. I've tried all variations like AUTO, INCREMENT, AUTOINCREMENT and such, but nothing works.
I've looked everywhere but couldn't find an answer to this. Thanks for the help.

You used MySQL syntax. I think you agree with me that Access isn't a MySQL database. Either use MySQL with a real JDBC driver (recommended) or use Access syntax.
That said, creating databases and tables using Java is a bad idea. The database and table must be already there. With Java you just do the usual table operations like select, insert, update and delete. Nothing more is needed.

How to create auto increment value in my column using identity ?

Auto Increment Columns Are Not Recognized

Hi
I am using postgre 8 and there are some auto incremented columns
in some tables. The problem is when I create the DataProvider from a table or a view those columns are not recognized by the IDE. I realized this while running the generated SQL. Is this a known issue ? Finally is there a work around this.

Hi Mehmet,
Creator requires a JDBC 3 compliant driver and PostgreSQL database driver is not fully compliant. Please take a look at the below thread which discusses about the issue:

How can I use a mySQL database schema with numeric auto increment primary key instead of GUID?

Hello!
I'm using the TestStand "MySQL Insert (NI)" database schema with GUID as primary key. So everything works fine.
But I prever using numeric values as primary key, because the database is in conjunction with another database which uses numeric values as primary key.
Is this possible?
Has anyone an idea how I can modify the "Generic Recordset (NI)" for use with MySQL?

The TestStand Database Logging feature does not allow you to run a separate SQL command after executing the command for a statement(table), so I do not think that you can use an auto incrementing column for the tables. There is just no way to get it back in a generic way. One option that I tried is something similar to the Oracle schema where you call a store procedure to return a sequence ID for each record that you want to add.
So you would have to create the following sequence table in MySQL:
CREATE TABLE sequence (id INT NOT NULL);
INSERT INTO sequence VALUES (0);
Then create a stored procedure as shown below that will increment the sequence value and return it in a recordset:
CREATE PROCEDURE `getseqid`()
BEGIN
        UPDATE sequence SET id=LAST_INSERT_ID(id+1);
        SELECT LAST_INSERT_ID();
END
Then update the MySQL tables to use INT primary and foreign key values, so the TestStand MySQL SQL file to create all tables would have text like this:
CREATE TABLE UUT_RESULT
ID    INT PRIMARY KEY,
~
CREATE TABLE STEP_RESULT
ID    INT PRIMARY KEY,
UUT_RESULT   INT NOT NULL,
~
Then update the schema primary and foreign key columns in the TestStand Database Options dialog box to be INT to match the table. For the primary key columns, you will have to set the Primary Key Type to "Get Value from Recordset" and set the Primary Key Command Text to "call getseqid()". This will call the stored procedure to determine the next value to use as the ID value.

Auto Increment of Primary Field in Table Maintainance

Hi,
We want to give an Auto increment to the Primary Key, when ever the table is updated/inserted with a new record. How to get the value updated????
For Eg,
Table ZTEST Contains     MANDT, ITEM,   EBELN.
It should have the values 800    001   000977
And when the next record is created, the ITEM value should be Automatically get the value 002.. and so on for every Record.
Pls do let me know if any other details is reqd.

   You can do many things in table maintenance screen like validation of some field, making some field required or displayed etc.
   For auto increment you have to use Number-Ranges. FM NUMBER_GET_NEXT is helpful in this case.
   Where to write the code??? The Function-Group you have made. There will be includes. You can easily locate the place to write these codes.
   Caution point is that if you re-generate the table maintenance then all code will be gone.

As far as I know there is not any auto increment data type in Oracle. Instead of this you should create a sequence and get the next value of the sequence while creating a row in your table.
CREATE SEQUENCE Test_Sequence ;
CREATE TABLE Test_Table ( Id NUMBER , Foo VARCHAR2(4) ) ;
ALTER TABLE Test_Table ADD CONSTRAINT Test_Table_PK_Id PRIMARY KEY ( Id ) ;

Auto Increment ID Field Table in the Oracle Database (insert new record)

I have been using the MySQL. And the ID field of the database table is AUTO INCREMENT. When I insert a new record into a database table, I can have a statement like:

I have a table Employee with EmloyeeID, EmployeeName, Email...
When i design table in database, i created a Sequence and then Trigger for EmployeeID to auto increment.
Now in ADF, actually in my web form: I don't want enter values for EmployeeID to insert into table,
but still error : required for EmployeeID...

Update table column with same auto-increment value, via T-SQL stored procedure

I have a table 'Contracts' as we can see in the picture below (I exported my data on An Excel Spreadsheet). Table's primary key is 'ID' column.
I am trying to create a stored procedure (i.e. updContractNum), through which I am going to update the 'Contract_Num' column, in every row where the values on Property_Code, Customer, Cust_Category and Amnt ARE EQUAL, as we can see in the schema above.
The value of Contract_Num is a combination of varchar and auto_increment (integer). For example, the next value on 'Contract number' column will be 'CN0005' for the combination of 11032-14503-02-1450,00
I' m trying to use CURSORS for this update but I am new in using cursors and I am stuck in whole process. I atttach my code below:

You dont need cursor
You can simply use an update statement like this

AUTO Increment on TABLE or TRIGGER

I have a table that I created. I want the first column in the table to auto increment. Some of the examples I have seen create a sequence, and then do the update on a trigger?
Is is possible to just start with 1 and increment by one when something is inserted into the table in the CREATE or ALTER Table syntax?
Or Do I have to create a sequence, and trigger for this?

I have already created a trigger for this table. I am doing an insert.

Insert to 2 Tables and Auto-Increment

I applied the Insert To 2 Tables Wizard and then added an Auto-Increment
behavior to auto increment a field in the master table. BUT - I also
need to auto-increment a field in the detail table. The AutoIncrement
behavior only offers fields for the master table. So - how do I
auto-increment the detail table?
I know I could create a custom trigger - but how do you grab the primary
key from the DETAIL table?

Got it. Advanced tab of the AutoIncrement server behavior - remove the
master table and add the detail table. Then return to basic tab and add
the appropriate field.

Auto increment field in database issue

Ok, I have read all about the issues with the auto increment field when trying to hook my form up to a ms access database.
My problem is that the auto increment field is the one field I want in my form.
Any suggestions how to create a new record with my form? its a simple database, date field, and PO number (the auto incremented field)
Just trying to get a fresh PO number on my PO form each time its filled out....

I have a vital form that clients fill out, which is passed to many people in the company along the workflow. The form is a Planner and we have in the following PDF, Word Doc..
Well before, the Planner.pdf was originally created in Word, since most people have access to Word.. but evolved to a PDF form created from the Word Doc via Adobe LiveCycle Designer 8.0 w/ User Rights enabled so that the form could be filled out and saved using Adobe Reader.. which was a step better than Word.. being that it is free. But this needed to be easier and more to the point b/c some clients don't particularly like installing the latest version of Reader, even if you provide them the link. Nor do they like saving the form, filling the form, and attaching the form to send back.
My goal is to have the client fill an HTML version of the form, submit and be done with it, but everyone in the workflow be able to easily receive the filled Planner as a PDF form.
So some months ago I ran into this post Chris Trip, "Populate Livecycle PDF from mySQL database using PHP" #8, 22 Sep 2007 4:37 pm
which uses the command line Win32 pdftk.exe to merge an FDF file into an existing PDF on the remote server, and serve this to whoever.
My problem was with shared hosting and having the ability to use the Win32 pdftk.exe along with PHP which is predominantly used on Linux boxes. And we used a Linux box.
so i created the following unorthodox method, which a client fills the HTML version of the Planner, all field values are INSERTED into a table in MySQL DB, I and all filled planners that have been filled by clients to date can be viewed from a repository page where an XML file is served up of the corresponding client, but someone would have to have Acrobat Professional, to import the form data from the XML file into a blank form.. altoughh this is simple for me.. I have the PHP file already created so that when a Planner is filled and client submits. >> the an email is sent to me with a table row from the repository of the client name, #, email, and a link to d-load the XML file,
But I also have the PHP files created so that the Planner can be sent to by email to various people in the workflow with certain fileds ommitted they they do not need to see, but instead of the XML file beiong served up i need the filled PDF Planner to be served.
I can do this locally with ease on a testing server, but I am currently trying to use another host that uses cross-platform compatibility so i can use PHP and the pdftk.exe to achieve this, as that is why I am having to serve up an XML file b/c we use a Linux server for our website, and cant execute the exe.
Now that I am testing the other server (cross-platform host), just to use them to do the PDF handling (and it's only $5 per month) I am having problems with getting READ, WRITE, EXECUTE permissions..
Si guess a good question to ask is can PHP do the same procedure as the pdftk.exe, and i can eleminate it.
or how in the heck can i get this data from the DB into a blank PDF form, like i have described??

Retrieve new row's auto-increment key from dataprovider

I have a page that is bound to a MySQL table rowset or, alternately, a new (append()'ed) row. The row's Primary Key is a MySQL auto-increment Integer (translates to a Long.) After commit()'ing the the new row to the database, how would I then get the new row's ID (fieldname "ID")? If I refresh() the dataprovider and try to get the value an error is thrown.
Some background: The dataprovider's backing rowset has a query parameter for the ID field. I set it to "0" if the page is creating a new row or I set it to the unique ID if the page is displaying an existing row. After the new row is committed, I need the new ID set the query parameter and synch up related rows in different tables that are keyed off the ID in this (master) table. I'd like to do this without "guessing" what the ID would be in advance as that method isn't foolproof in heavy usage.
Additionally, it strikes me as a useful workaround if the unique ID was a UUID (mySQL UUID() function) that does not run the risk of any concurrency issues. Has anyone used this solution in VWP? How would I make the call for the underying DB (in this case MySQL, but could be anything) to generate the UUID? Is the call DB specific or is there a JDBC equivalent?
UPDATE: never mind the GUID question, I can use the java.rmi.dgc.VMID class to autogenerate unique GUID's for this purpose. Being from a Lotus Notes background, I'm used to the power and flexibility such Unique ID's bring to the app. dev's portfolio.

JSF together with JBoss Seam offers some real good possibilities to improve developer productivity. Right now, with JSF you can create forms where fields are persistent (saved in a database), but you have to write code to persist fields. In Notes/Domino, every field you drop in the form is automatically set to persist without writing a single piece of code. JBoss Seam aims to provide the missing glue to tie the JSF beans with business logic (EJB) and persistent layer (JPA). I think tools for Seam are still not mature. I would love to see JSC/VWB utilizing Seam. I know there is a NetBean plugin for Seam but it was written for old NetBeans (not VWP or JSC), so it doesn't work with the visual web pack where you can drag and drop JSF components.
