Audio distortion during/after capture in Premiere Elements10

Why is the audio distorted (sounds like a cell phone that keeps losing a signal and every other word is garbled) when capturing a video from a DV camcorder in Premiere Elements10? I'm using a IEEE 1394 cable from the camcorder to the computer and DV camcorder is selected in the Premiere Elements setup menu. Any help.........please!

Capturing from a tape-based miniDV does not change the audio or video information in any way, Unkie. So if you're capturing from a miniDV camcorder and getting distortion, that distortion is happening in the camcorder itself.
But if you're getting distortion when you output your video, it could well be because your audio levels are too high.
As I say in my books, whenever you edit your video, you should go to the Window menu and open the Audio Mixer. Watch your audio levels as you play back your timeline. They should peak at Zero. If they're up in the yellow and red or are overloading the mixer, you are going to get distortion in your video output.
But if you're saying you're hearing distortion while capturing your video -- that's a whole other issue. You need to adjust your computer's audio levels or turn down your speakers. As I've said, capturing over FireWire does absolutely nothing to change the audio or video information that's coming in from the camcorder. It's just your computer playing it too loud.

  • Why is my audio garbled only AFTER being in Premiere Pro?

Hi guys, first post so I'm sorry if I do anything wrong!
I use Premiere Pro CS6 to edit video game recordings and add commentary. I've been doing this for about 6 months and have never had any problems.
On this one MP4, however, something weird happened. Once I import the file and put it in a sequence, the audio is messed up. Most notably it lags behind the video severely and skips a lot. Here's the video in question after exporting from Premiere: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyU2l4XVrtw [WARNING: this is a recording of the video game Dead Space 2, which has a lot of animated violence/blood in it. Also, skip ahead a bit in the video to get past the pause screen]
But when I watch the MP4 in windows media player, it's totally fine! So it's not the file itself that's the problem.
    Things I've tried:
    - deleting the MP4 from the workspace and re-importing it.
    - deleting the sequence and putting the MP4 in a new one.
    - putting the MP4 in a new project by itself.
    - exporting the sequence to see if the problem fixes itself after exporting.
    More info, if it helps:
    - I never change the settings of sequences/projects, so my sequences default to widescreen 32kHz. Then when it says "this clip does not match the sequence settings", I just tell it to change the sequence settings to match the clip's settings.
    - I have other recordings of the same game, and none of them have this problem.
    - I record my xbox 360 with a Happauge HD PVR2 Gaming Edition, which outputs a MP4 of the video and audio to my computer.
I can't think of anything else to add. I really appreciate any help I can get on the situation, because it throws a wrench in my series if I can't upload 10 minutes of the game... and I can't exactly re-record it. THANKS!

    Welcome to the forum, breadraptor.
We'd be interested in getting a copy of the problematic clip. I'll send you a private message to pursue that.
Meanwhile, one question about the clip: is the frame rate constant or variable? Many screen capture programs record VFR, and PPRO is known to have sync issues with VFR content, as discussed in this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5962783#5962783. I rather doubt this is the problem in your case given that you have a number of screen capture clips and have this problem with only one of them, but worth putting this card on the table.

  • No audio after capture in Premiere Elements Playback

I am capturing video from a Sony DV camcorder using an s-video cable.  When I playback the captured video there is no audio.  I have played the .avi file in Windows Movie Maker and there is no audio there either.  any ideas???

S-video is only a video stream -- so of course you won't get any audio!
But more than that, capture from a miniDV camcorder should over a FireWire cable connection only.

  • Audio Monitoring during Log & Capture

New user here and just setting things up. I'm able to hear audio after I have captured a clip but cannot hear/monitor audio during logging. What am I missing here? BTW - using onboard iMac speakers and headphone jack for monitoring.

I have the same problem and its driving me crazy! I don't think it is supposed to work this way, especially if you have 8 cores worth of processing power. More than enough to view and listen during capture and log review process.
    Here is my situation:
    Camera: Sony HC7
    Connection: Firewire
Video Setting on Camera: HDV 1080i60 with 16 bit 48hz Audio
Program: Final Cut Studio Pro 2
During Log and Capture Preview (HDV settings) there is not an option to turn audio on although you can view the sound bars moving just fine. I have not been able to find any documentation that say FCP does not allow you to listen to audio during preview. I think this is a bug or at least an option that FCP should allow the user to turn-on or turn off.
My question is this: Should it be working? And if so, why not? And if its not allowed then Why Doesn't the documentation say so????? I've noticed that if you're capturing from standard DV devices that you elect to turn the audio on/off.
Like this post, if I capture it into the application then everything works just fine and the audio is there.
    Please help. Thanks

  • Audio sync prob after capturing for 10 minutes or so

I have an audio sync problem when I import into Final Cut Express. Everything is fine but lets say around 15 minutes or so there is a slight sync problem.
What I have been doing is I import into IMovie because I have it setup to cut the clips after 10 minutes. This is great because I can let it run..and it automatically splits the clips up without any dropped frames at all. The problem is I then have to drag those clips..one by one into my external harddrive. That takes time and then I have to render the audio in Final Cut Express.
I do like though that the clips are a little over 2gigs..which is good for transfering between drives and backing it up onto a DVD.
Is there a way you can do what I do in iMovie...it automatically starts a new clip after ten minutes or whatever...this way I don't have to transfer and render.

FCE does not break up clips on capture. You can capture in 10 minute chunks if you want.
The audio sync problem can be caused by a number of things most common of which is using the wrong settings for your capture, where your settings audio sample rate doesn't match your media.

  • Audio distortion only after update to 1.2.1 - old firmware = no distortion

I have been using my 5G ipod for over a year. The sound quality was brilliant, movies great, mp3 192kbps, in ear or bose lifestyle digital/wave radio output via dock and line-out from ipod. Updated to 1.2.1 from 1.1 and suffered terrible audio playback , something like listening to 64kbps, heavily distorted, not crisp.
I restored and went back to the old firmware - no problems.
I have updated twice since and suffered the same issue.
Am i best to sit tight and wait in hope for a solution in the next firmware update or is there a technical solution to this annoying problem - I dont even want to listen to music on my iPod anymore.
(An interesting point of note is that the distortion is delayed by 5 or so songs immediately after a reset)
    Any insight/help would be appreciated.
    Cheers, James

  • Audio Level Gone After Capture

    Hello,
I've searched the forums and found one with this problem, and it wasn't resolved.
Basically, I'm previewing audio before and during capture and the levels are great. Then, upon playing back, I open the audio up in the viewer, and even there the levels look great, but it plays back really low - and distroted.
It appears the tape (coming in from my miniDV camcorder) is fine as the level is fine on preview. And it's not my speakers or anything like that, otherwise I'd have the problem during preview, also.
Any thoughts or help would be fantastic.
    Thanks,
    Matt

  • Strange Audio Rate During PAL Capture

I am capturing and doing work with a number of PAL tapes. While capturing footage, I am continually getting an audio sample rate of 47999.6 Hz rather than 48.0 KHz on captures that are long, like an entire tape. I can, if I capture shorter clips, get 48KHz with no problem from the same tapes. When I try to edit with the 47999.6 Hz files, the audio gets progressively more and more out of sync throughout the clip. If I try to output the audio as an .AIF and use Peak Pro to convert it to a 48Khz file and bring it back into FCP, the audio file is shorter than it was and starts in syns but again progressively out of sync. Can anyone explain what is causing the video to come in at 47999.6 and what I might be able to do to prevent it? And if not, any ideas of how I can workaround the issue to make it work?
    Thanks!

So what your saying is that even though FCP is set to capture at a rate of DV NTSC 48k, it would still capture what ever signal format that is being sent to it as that original format? IE, if we feed a an audio signal as 96k, FCP would capture the signal as 96k even though our capture presets instruct FCP to capture as 48k? Same would apply to a video signal then? If we fed a DVC50 signal to FCP, it would capture as that despite presets set to NTSC DV?? FCP will not convert formats during capture from a non controlled device?

  • Thunderbolt audio distortion during heavy Thunderbolt hard drive activity on MacBook Pro Retina 15 2012

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro Retina connected to a Thunderbolt Display, with Thunderbolt hard drives attached to that. Whenever I'm doing a big copy, or a Time Machine backup, any audio being played through the speakers becomes heavily distorted. If I switch to internal speakers, it's fine (but obviously not high-quality). As soon as drive activity quiets down, audio is fine again.
Anyone else having this problem and/or know of a fix? It's super aggravating to have to change speaker settings every hour when my backup kicks off!
    Thanks!

I believe this issue is caused by bad ground coupling between the two devices, some of the induced charge can spark between connectors in the thunderbolt port causing computer to basicly freeze.
To solve this issue try touching the connectors outside metal part to your macbooks body first to discharge it, then while plugging int the connector do it at slight angle so the metal of the connector touches Mac's body.
This method has been working for me.

  • Audio is bad after capture

I am capturing footage from my sony camera, thru my mac and onto my external harddrive. I am using a firewire cable to connect my computer to the camera and a USB calbe to connect my computer to my external hard drive. I have captured hours of footage this way, but have only recently been having this audio problem:
The audio on the tape is good, I can play it back on the camera and it sounds just fine. But when I capture in Final Cut Pro, there are weird audio glitches that keep happening. Also, I can't hear the audio coming from my computer unless I check the "preview" box under clip settings for audio. I don't remember having to do that before.
My Device Control setting is: FireWire NTSC Basic
My Capture/Input setting is: DV NTSC 48kHz
Any ideas? Maybe just a bad cord, but I'm hoping not as I don't want to have to buy a new cord to figure this out. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know!! Thanks guys.

Theoretically you should have enough bandwidth in a FW card to daisy chain a FW hd to the computer. What this means is plugging the FW cable from the HD into the computer's one port and then plugging the camera's fw output into the drive's second port. This is the cheap way to do it, but I would very strongly advise you to follow Jim's excellent advice and get a card.
The computer has circuits for different types of data streams. These circuits are called busses as they bus info from one place to another. Your machine has but one FW bus, as do most machines. By getting a card you're creating a second independent bus route, one for the flow of data from the camera to the computer, the other for the computer to the hard drive. The card just plugs into the card slot, piece of cake.
Adam Wilt summarizes it far better than I could at http://www.adamwilt.com/Tidbits.html.
Cut and paste from the site:
"FireWire Frustrations: FireWire 400 (FW400) has more than enough bandwidth even for dual-stream DV, yet plenty of problems can occur when running FireWire disks and FireWire cameras on the same bus. There are a few possible reasons for this:
    * The FW bus can only run as fast as the slowest device on it. Although Macs, PCs, and most drives should be talking S400 (400 Mbit/sec), many cameras and decks, both consumer and pro, only support S100 or S200 speeds. If you hang an S100 deck on your bus, you've just cut max throughput by a factor of four.
    * A DV stream runs about 29Mbit/sec (including audio, aux data, etc.). That's nearly 1/3 of the usable bandwidth on an S100 FW bus, leaving only two raw streams' worth of bandwidth for disk I/O. However, due to the bursty nature of disk I/O, one needs about twice DV's data rate to ensure timely delivery of data--and that's with internal ATA drives. Given the "thin pipe" of the remaining 71 Mbit/sec bandwidth, playing/recording a single stream of DV while supporting DV I/O on the same bus is getting uncomfortably close to the limit.
    * Some devices do not like to co-reside on a FW bus. Some Canon single-chip camcorders, Apple iSight webcams, and even some disk drives have been cited as "not playing well with others".
Many cameras / decks / converter boxes have used a very minimalist implementation of the 1394a spec, barely sufficient to find a compatible A/VC host on the bus and talk to it. Hence the oft-observed "baby duckling syndrome": hook up two FireWire decks to a Mac or PC, turn 'em on, and the first thing each one sees is mommy. Sometimes the decks talk to each other, ignoring the computer, sometimes one talks to the computer and the other is ignored, etc.
FireWire bridge chips in disk housings have comparable pathologies. Folks report that some drives work well on the end of a daisy chain but not in the middle of a daisy-chain, for example.
All these same caveats also apply when using a FW800 bus, of course.
I routinely play/record using a 7200rpm IBM DeskStar in a three-year-old ADS Pyro case using the Oxford 900 chipset with a Sony DSR-11, DHR-1000, or PD150 daisy-chained off it on an 800 MHz TiBook. I'm just lucky in that all this stuff happens to play nicely together. Your mileage may vary, depending on what equipment you're using.
Also note that using a common, low-cost FireWire hub will not help solve these sorts of problems. The best workaround I know of is to segregate disks on one bus, and your DV device on another. If you have a desktop or tower computer, you can add a PCI FireWire card; if you have a laptop with a CardBus slot, adding a CardBus FireWire adapter is the way to go."

  • Audio distortion during RAM preview

I've been working for the past 4 months on the same computer, working on similar animations, nothing has changed much... then this happens.
**During RAM preview, my audio now sounds like an overloading robot.**
I can't seem to find similar issues on the internet to figure this out myself so I'm asking this forum. I haven't changed anything significant that could have altered my computer. I'm using:
    late 2013 MacPro model
    - with a SSD
    - 32GB of DDR3 RAM
    - 3.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5
    - AMD FirePro D300 2048MB GPU
    But I don't think it's the hardware
Old projects that I've worked on before are now doing the same thing. It's only during my RAM preview. Simple audio preview sounds perfectly fine. There is nothing wrong with the audio file because others that have worked before aren't working now.
Has anyone had the same problem?

I can't tell you what the problem was but I found the reset for all my preferences, tried it, and it worked. It solved my problem but I wish I could have found the source because I created my settings 2 months ago. I allocated more memory, changed a few settings but not within the past couple of days that would have created the problem. So i was just perplexed. I'd still like to know what the hell happened to cause this so I don't run into it again.

  • Audio distorted during fade in/fade out transitions

I'm using iMovie HD to edit an MP4 file. I've put fade in/fade out transitions at the beginning and end of the movie, but I notice that it either garbles the audio during these transitions or adds a loud clicking noise in place of the audio that should be there (i.e., the original audio fading in or out.)
Has anyone experienced this? Any idea how to work around the problem?
    Thanks.

    Maybe it is this?

  • Audio dropping after capture

I seem to be having a problem with audio dropping out after capturing. When I play the tape back in the camera the audio plays fine so I guess it was recoreded properly on the tape but when I play the captured footage back in FCP the audio drops out here and there. I am capturing from the camera which the footage was shot on (XL2). I've searched the forms for people with the same issue but can't find anything. Anyone have any ideas?

Just to check - are you using FCP4.5 and have recently upgraded to OSX4.9? Because if so that could be the issue; it was for me for something very similar. In which case your options are to upgrade FCP or downgrade OSX.
The other thing you could try - regardless of your system and version - is to capture using Vidi - http://www.mitzpettel.com/software/vidi.php (I only just recommended this to someone, I am not on commission honestly, it's free!)
I have found that Vidi will sometimes ignore timecode glitches etc that FCP is annoyingly sensitive to.
