Audio volume drops in FLV file after inserting into Captivate 4

The audio volume drops almost 50% in FLV files inserted into Captivate 4. Is there a solution for this problem?

Hi Sony,
That was the first thing I ever tried when I discovered the default setting for FLV and slide video (variables and advanced actions are my favorites, as you know perhaps). Perhaps I missed something, and did not try in CP 5.5 or after the latest patch on CP5.0, but this system variable seemed only to have effect on the normal audio clips, not on audio for video?

Hi All - I have recently got hold of Captivate 4 to create eLearning modules for contact centre agents to work through (in various subjects) part of this involved me inserting videos (of various things like business presentations and use of our complicated telephony)
For this purpose I purchased a Flip Digital Camera ( http://www.theflip.com/products_flip_ultra.shtml#scene=sceneMain ) as it was simple to use, cheap and fufilled the requirements I had.
However the files from the camera do not encode properly to allow me to insert them into my Captivate projects. They save as .avi files and to insert them they need to be (correct me if i am wrong!) .flv files. my question therefore is,
Is there a way around this? and if not - What can I use to re-encode them into the required file extension for insertion?
any advice would be gladly recieved!

Sounds like you need an AVI to FLV converter software. I have Flash and struggle with it. But if you have Flash you probably have the ability to convert in Flash. If you don't have Flash, perhaps use Google to locate a suitable package. Some are free and some you have to buy.

Pool data from text file and insert into database

Can anyone tell me how to pool data from a text file and insert into database?
let's say my text file is in this format
123456 Peter 22
234567 Nicholas 24
345678 Jane 20
Then I need to insert the all the value for this three column into a table which has the three column name ID, Name, Age
Anyone knows? I need to do this urgently...Thank in advanced

1. Use BufferedReader and read the file line by line.
2. Loop thru the file and do the following steps with in this loop.
3. Use StringTokenizer to seperate each line into three values (columns).
4. Now create a insert statement with these values and add the statement to the batch (using addBatch() method of PreparedStatement or Statement).
5. Finally (after exiting the loop), execute these batch of statements (using ps.executeBatch()).

If the files are small, you can load the target file in a DOM document, insert the data from the source file and persist the DOM.
If the files are large, you probably want to use a StAX or SAX.

Selection breaks after inserting into dataProvider

I have been battling this issue for a couple of days now. I
have a HorizontalList that is using an itemRenderer component that
I created. When I insert an item into the dataProvider using
addItemAt....
1) the item is inserted
2) i see the item rendered correctly in the HorizontalList
However, the selection breaks. What I mean by this is the
newly added items does NOT highlight when I roll over it and if I
click on it, it does not select. This only happens for the newly
added item, all the others that were already in the list work fine
(highlight and can be selected).
I've tried calling validateNow() on the HorizontalList after
inserting into the dataprovider but it doesn't help at all.
Please help.

I can't believe this, but after 2 days of trying to figure
this out I figured it out just moments after posting to the forum!
Here is what fixed it and I am not sure exactly why. At this
point I don't care...
The dataProvider I was using contained a list of custom
objects. I had a property on the class called uid. When I commented
out this property, everything worked. I don't know what made me
think to try this. I guess my uid property on the class was
conflicting with the uid property on the itemRenderer component or
something.

Solving this requirement on a modern Windows system is going to be problematic too, as the autorun mechanisms are increasingly being locked down over there, if not by the end-user or the system installer, then by the usual anti-malware tools that are installed.
Given this is one of the most vulnerable populations here in terms of operational security, you'll probably want to target online distribution, or to distribute a signed application that can be installed on the target (akin to a managed system) and that then accesses your data on external storage. All that app might do is access the disk, verify that the contents of the device are trusted and valid, and launch the browser.
I'd likely target online distribution or pre-loaded distributions and iOS, as that's where all of the older folks I'm dealing with are headed, too. If not a native app, then maybe a web-app here, and download the contents into the HTML5 local storage.

Inserting a FLV file without inserting a skin

I created a short FLV file in Flash, intentionally leaving out a skin. Importing it into Dreamweaver, I seem to have no way that I understand to simply run it without a skin. I am forced to choose one. How do I override this Dreamweaver process? Is there some part of the code I can change? The code for this little FLV file is the following:

Autoplaying Flash with no controls, ewwww yuck.
You could try exporting your FLA project as SWF.
DW Insert Menu > Media > Shockwave. No skins or player controls.
NOTE: don't do this if your media contains loud audio or continuosly looping animations as this will irritate some site visitors and drive traffic away from your site.

Audio volume drops on sub-titled clips (imovie 4)

When I place a sub-title on a video clip the volume drops considerably. When I highlight the clip and boost its volume even to the maximum 150% in an attempt to make the loudness consistent with the rest of the project, it's still not enough. Volume reductions like this occur even when I do contrast or brightness, etc. adjustments. How better boost volume with these clips that suffer volume reduction and maintain uniform audio throughout a project?

Extract the sound of the video clip with the title and see if it makes a difference.
This takes me back some years. I don't recall the sound dropping off to the degree you speak of though. But give it a go, you have nothing to loose !

Reading special characters from a flat file and inserting into DB

I'm reading data with special characters like . etc from a flat file , assigning the data to variable in my anonymous block and inserting into my DB. But the show up as inverted ? s. Any clues about how to do this?
If i try to do the insert directly it works. It seems like the error occurs when reading this data into a variable

lalit, this is probably an character set problem, the default on Database creation tends to be 7bit Ascii which does not support special characters, it's been a while since I set up a db in this way, but you need to change settings in oracle.ini. The db will need to be restarted for this. Also, to check current settings try:
select * from NLS_DATABASE_PARAMETERS
You want an 8bit, unicode or multibyte character set. Sorry I cannot remember moer off the top of my head, try searching on NLS or character set

No Audio on most of my videos after downloading into imovie

Please help! I had audio in the videos once I downloaded them into imovie, but then the audio just disappeared! Did I click on something?? How do I fix this?

I assume, you don't import from a camcorder (=as suggested by Apple), but try to handle an mpeg in iMovie (=as not suggested by Apple).
to make mpegs editable in iMovie, you have to convert those files BEFORE import.
recommended tools are Mpeg Streamclip .. and in case, you have to convert mp2, you need additional the mp2-playback component (20$, apple.com/quicktime)
in case your files use a DivX codec, you should install www.perian.org

For the birthday, I have two spryselect dropdowns (month and

Audio Drops on QT Files After P2 Log and Transfer

I'm using Log and Transfer to convert my P2 data into editable QuickTimes; however, for some reason, my rendered QuickTime files loose their audio at some point. I say, "Some point," because it's not at a specific timecode. It's different for each clip. Some maintain the audio for 80% of the clip while others might be 30%. I know the audio is there because I can hear throughout the entire length of each clip in the Log and Transfer window. Any idea what's happening during the render to QuickTime process?

Possible quick fix -won't hurt to try it.
Deleting FCP Preferences:
Open a Finder window. Set the view mode to columns:
Click the house icon that has your name next to it.
Click the folder "Library" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Preferences" in the next column.
Find and click the folder "Final Cut Pro User Data" in the next column.
Move the files "Final Cut Pro 6.0 Prefs", "Final Cut Pro Obj Cache" and "Final Cut Pro Prof Cache" to the Trash and empty it.
When you have a stable set of preference files, download [Preference Manager|http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm] to back them up. If you have further problems, the backup can be recalled and you can continue working.
