Authentication Speed at a crawl

Two days ago when my users (hs students) log in (LDAP), it takes now over 5 minutes for their desktop/dock to appear. Also, Server Admin on the local box will not launch, and sometime Server Admin from my laptop will not connect to the server. We did install 10.5.5 a few days ago, but installed it elsewhere and not having problems in other buildings.
What things can I check or could be causing this authentication bog down? If I log in as a local admin usere, I can get all over the network/web just fine, it's when I attempt to log in as an LDAP user that I sit and wait.
Thanks!

The first thing to check is DNS. You need working DNS (both forward and reverse) for your server and for the clients on the network.
If DNS isn't working properly it can cause all sorts of delays while the server tries to resolve the client IP address (and ultimately fails).
If that's not the problem, the second thing to check is a duplex mismatch on the server - check that the server's ethernet port and the switch it's connected to are set to the same mode (e.g. 1000-full).

  • Download speed at a crawl

    Hello,
My G5's download speed has diminished to a crawl. It appears this happened after 10.4.5
Funny thing is, my 12" PB's speed is fine (also running 10.4.5).
    The G5 is downloading at 175 KB/sec were as the 12" is 325 KB/sec.
Both access the internet through an Airport Extreme. Both are configured to do everything automatically except for the turning off of IPv6.
I've cleared the caches running Cocktail, reinstalled 10.4.5 using the combo update, and repaired permissions.
I booted up my backup, still running 10.4.4, to check its speed and it is also slow. Could 10.4.5 have done something to the G5's Airport card?
(both computers are in the same room along with the base station)

    Holly cow!
I manually reset the base station and updated its software.
I'm now downloading at 420 KB/sec on both machines.
Roughly 8 minutes for a 300 MB zip of some nautical charts... I can live with that!

  • Authentication Speed

    Hello,
I am trying to speed up the amount of time it take for a WLAN client using PEAP with OTP to authentication the WLAN.
Currently, it can take up to 2 minutes before a user is prompted to authenticate. Is there any way of speeding this up?
I know on the AP you can configure the Authentication server timeout and retries, is there a similar function that works for communication between the AP and client?
I have seen 'EAP retry limite reached for user X' appear. I think this happens because the PC is busy performing OS logon and scripts, so cannot respond to the network logon, hence this process times out.
    Any ideas?
    Many Thanks
    Abdul

    Thanks for the response...
I think your right, it is a combination of the problems...the windows boot up time is long, but we can live with that
The delayed authentication issues happen at boot up and when the PC is re-authentication after being out of range or coming out of suspend. So, even after the PC is fully booted, the association process is lengthy.
My aim is to package the solution so it can be used by 'end-users' with minimum clicks, and user intervention. As such an ideal solution would be:
A user boots up his/her machine (which may take and extra 30 seconds or so) then be prompted with a single logon box, which will allow the user to logon without timing out, and provide a diaglogue box back if an incorrect password has been entered. If a user roams into a WLAN coverage area, then again a box pops up straight away. When you used to not authenticating to the network (as with Ethernet) it is very frustrating to have to wait for 3 or 4 minutes to use the network. After all we are promoting mobility!

  • How to get consistent speeds with scrolling/crawling text?

Has anyone found a clever way of making consistent scrolling speeds between separate scrolling text clips?
I have dozens of clips of scrolling (and crawling) text in my movie, but haven't found any way to make them scroll at the same speed. The speed is determined by the length of the scrolling clip, but each of my clips has different amounts of text, so I can't just make them all the same length.
So I play around and try and get it close, but some always end up moving faster than others.
    Thoughts?
    thanks,
    Scott
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Is your text vertical or horizontal?
With vertical scroll, I make a huge empty paragraph with a bunch of "Enter"-spaces. Example:
Then I just fill in what I need. I make sure my initial 'empty' paragraph is big enough to fill my biggest piece of scrolling text. Then I just place the big effected clip on it's own video track.
For horizontal scroll, it's a bit different. I simply type in the longest piece of text that i'll be using and use that as my template. For shorter lines of text, I put in blank spaces. To ensure that the longest and shortest text lines are going at the same speed, I put the longest clip on it's own video track, and the shortest clip on another video track, but directly above the other one. I then put a period (".") at the beginning and end of my short text line and see on my timeline if the period appears at the same time as the first/last letter of my longer text block. Example:
    V2 = . The sky is blue .
V1 = Dogs eat grass and cats meow. Cows don't bark.
Once I see that it's at the exact same speed, then I replace the periods with spaces.

  • Text crawl speed: how to match the speeds of many crawls?

I have 20 bits of text of different lengths (from 20 to 60 words) and I need to make a crawl of each. I want all of the text crawls to move at the same speed right to left, but it appears that I have to lengthen and shorten clips by trial and error to match the speeds. Is this right? Is there an easier way to regulate the speed?
I'm using Final Cut HD 4.5. I have the BorisFX plug-in.
    Thanks.

Just do some simple mathematics instead of manually adjusting the actual clip's length on the timeline.
    An example.
Control click on the text clip with 20 words and check duration. Lets assume it is 8 seconds. Then control click a clip with about 40 words <click>change duration to 12 seconds.
It should give you the same or very similar speed.
Rely on numbers rather than guessing clips lengths.
    G.
PS. Just reading now Zak's post, didn't remember Andy's plugin(Sorry Andy) but let us know if that solves your problem.

  • New FiOS GigE Wireless 'N' Router has slowed our wireless speed to a crawl...need help!

This past Tuesday I installed the new N router.  Also, we upgraded to FiOS Quantum 75/35 (previously 15/5).  That was activated the following day.  I can't complain about the internet speed to our pc since it's wired.  Speed tests showed we were getting what was advertised. :-)
For the wifi, I can't figured out for the life of me what's causing our devices (e.g., our Nexus 7 tablets) to have a link speeds of 65Mbps one minute and then drop down to 5 or even 1.  The same situation was happening with my HTC Incredible II phone, but I think that connection was tapping out at 54Mbps.  The bottom would just drop out of the signal for some reason.  Other times we couldn't even connect back in.  The devices would say they're not in range even when they were in front of the router.  Not sure if I fubarred the router install or what?  I just swapped out the current Fios router for this new one.  Pretty straightforward.  At first, I logged into the router software with the defaults, but then I changed the the username, pswd, SSID, etc. to match what I used previously.  I thought it was working fine the night of the install but not so much after Fios got bumped up in speed the following day.  Maybe just a co-inky-dink?
I know you never get the same speeds compared to a wired pc but this seems worse (wifi-wise) than before the new router came along.  I've read that the 'N' routers can be finicky to set-up to run properly.  Maybe a setting or two is off?
I don't know if the fact that my son's netbook's wifi card is only b/g compatible would slow our network down?  At this point I'm grasping at straws!  I talked with tech support last night for 40 mins to no avail.  I got the usual story about wireless devices running slower than wired ones, that these smaller devices aren't capable to maintaining higher speeds (which I'm not sure I agree with 100%), the more active devices you have slows down your network, etc, etc.  I get all that.  But something is going on or actually, it's not.  LOL!
Why I don't agree with the above statement I mentioned is because I have my tablet at work now and the wifi speed is 54Mbps and it's constant.  So it seems to have no problems with this speed, unlike what I was told over the phone.
Let me know if I can provide any further technical details that'll make it easier to help diagnose our wifi issues.
Thanks for listening to me whine ,

    Thanks for the help, Hubrisnxs.
Here's an update since I got home:
Nexus7 (N7) took a min or so to connect to wifi when I got home.  When it did, speed said 65Mbps.  So I ran speedtest.net and got 27/20.  Shortly after that I tried again but it was hesitating.  I checked the speed and it was down to 5Mbps.  Brought it upstairs to router and pc, and eventually it was back to 65.  Ran speed test a few more times with similar results.  I did notice that the connection would intermittently come and go.  Not sure why.  Looking at the wifi section  on my N7, it says our network is out of range and the N7 is 2' from the router.  Every now and then my network will go to the top of the list and it'll say it's obtaining ip address, then secured with wpa/wpa2 psk and it's locked in.  So I hit the connect button and it's out of range again.  Of course, while I was typing it decided to connect after 10-15 mins of trying/nothing.  Says, signal strength excellent, 52 Mbps.  Spoke too soon.  It's off again.  Crap!  Back on again but speed was 19, now 5.
I did check router settings and this is what I have:
    Performance mode ('n')
    WPA2 AES
    Channel 1
    nonbroadcasting SSID
Maybe I'll try channel 11 next.....
Just for the heck of it, here is the results from verizon speed test on our pc (wired of course):

  • Sharepoint 2013 site having NTML Crawl issue while crawling Sharepoint 2010 sites having FBA authentication

    Hi,
We have Sharepoint 2013 search center site which is claim based with NTLM authentication set. we have Sharepoint 2010 farm also running which are FBA authenticated.
While crawling Sharepoint 2010 sites having FBA authentication from SP 2013 search center having NTLM auth. it does not give proper result.
Can you please help me what can be done here?
    Thanks,
    Prashant

    Hi Prashant,
According to your description, my understanding is that the search cannot work correctly when crawling the SharePoint site which is form-based authentication.
Per my knowledge, the crawl component requires NTLM to access content. At least one zone must be configured to use NTLM authentication. If NTLM authentication is not configured on the default zone, the crawl component can use a different
zone that is configured to use NTLM authentication.
However, if crawling a non-default zone of the web application, URLs of results will always be relative to the non-default zone that was crawled for queries from any zone, and this can cause unexpected or problematic behavior.
I recommend to make sure that the default zone of the SharePoint 2010 web application to use NTLM authentication.

  • Crawler time issue

    Dear Experts,
I have an issue regarding the custom crawler which I had created for the web repository.
    System Landscape - EP 2004s SP 14.
I have created a custom crawler (System Admin -> System Config -> Knowledge Management -> Global Services -> Crawler Parameters) by duplicating a standard crawler.
This custom crawler has following parameters -
No. of retrieving threads = 4.
No. of providing threads = 4.
    Follow Redirects = ON.
Now when I try to re index  the web repository it takes so long (About 20 - 25 hours)  to deliver about 300000 documents.
Even for the incremental index it takes 19 hours to deliver about 100 documents.
I don't think this is a normal behavior of the crawler.
Everything looks fine except this is taking lot of time to deliver the documents .
Note - 1. I don't find anything in the default trace regarding crawler.
              2. The web repository is a 'static' web repository with start page information.
              3. As per customer there is no change on the web server.
Any advice how to speed up the crawler.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Amit

    Hello Amit,
You can speed up the queue parameters refer to this thread.

  • Bt infinity 2 low speed from the off.

Hello there, I upgraded to bt infinity 2 with home hub 5 a few weeks ago. My BT internet and wireless in the house had previously been quite good.
I was told the new cabinet could give me download speeds of 80mps.
Right from the off the speed with fibre-optic has been poor. Have been testing from the off and the download speed has been averaging out at around 40 (best ever 44mps). Upload has been averaging around 7. Ping reading usually around 30. Lowest speed was 3.6 mps upload!
Most of these test results were achieved with direct ethernet connection (which means a cable across the room so its not my ideal option). Wireless connection gives similar results. davolo home plugs have been the slowest of all - reducing speed to a crawl. Weird since they previously worked well with my old school broadband and are the 500mps type.
After a week of slow speeds and many phone calls and tests an engineer was sent out. He said the initial engineer had failed to establish the correct main socket which is outside the house. He did some work in there and went away saying speeds would gradually rise. Ansd that 80 mps wasn't realistic but something around 60 was do-able. Its now  a week later and things have not improved.
I've enclosed 2 recent test/performance results. My line profile now seems to have very low projections.
would much appreciate any help/thoughts. Should add that I've not switched the hub on or off.
    cheers again for the assistance.

many thanks for the prompt replies.
It would be great to think the speed will just rise after another week or so.
In case there is still a problem here is the data requested.
    cheers

  • Security attributes, qfp and un-authenticated users

    Hi,
I have some observations regarding security attributes, query filter plugins and un-authenticated users that I would like your comments on.
I am developing a custom crawler, a will be using OID for authentication. Not all users will be authenticated (hence they should only have access to content considered public). Authorization is done by the document source (using the option "ACLs controlled by the source").
I am quite sure that I have read somewhere that not adding a security attribute for a certain document leads to the document being treated as public.
    Observations:
    A) Query filter plugins will only be called for authenticated users
    B) At crawl-time, not adding a defined security attribute leads to the document not being indexed
Observation B means that my security attribute has to be added for every document (for the public documents populated with a value representing public access). Observation A means that the query filter will not be invoked for un-authenticated users (hence, they won't see any of the indexed documents, since all have security attributes).
    Question:
How should I ensure that the documents considered public are available for unauthenticated users?
    Regards,
    Rune

    Hi all,
I seem to have had inaccurate logging , so my assumption A is false.
Then I have a simple workaround (add a special security attribute value for public documents), and you can forget about my question.
    regards,
    Rune

  • Extremely slow upload speed on Airport Extreme

I've had a perfectly working Airport Extreme for about 3 years now and suddenly the other night it decided it would slow it's upload speed to a crawl. Speedtest.net gives me an upload speed of 15-20 Mbps download speed but a tiny .07 Mbps upload speed.  I've been through the forums and ttried changing my Ethernet WAN Port settings to 1000 Mbsp and 100 Mbps instead of Automatic and I still have the same issue with 100 setting and it won't even connect at the 1000 setting.  I've tried prior software versions (was running 7.6.1), restarting, and reverting to the factory settings and setting up a new network all to no avail.   Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!

I've been through the forums and ttried changing my Ethernet WAN Port settings to 1000 Mbsp and 100 Mbps instead of Automatic and I still have the same issue with 100 setting and it won't even connect at the 1000 setting.
Unless your modem supports Gigabit Ethernet connections then setting the WAN port on the Extreme to 1000 will not work. Have you tried both of the 100 Mbps settings ... i.e., both Full and Half-Duplex?
The key here is what may have changed between the AirPort and the modem that could have caused your upload speed to drop. Depending on the generation of your AirPort, it can support LAN-to-WAN speeds up to 400 Mbps.
If changing the WAN setting doesn't help, I would suggest two things: 1) Reset the WAN setting to Automatic, and 2) Perform a complete power recycle of your networking equipment, as follows:
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref:Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Slow crawl rate

Brand new farm (app+WFE) and brand new SSA.... 7 content sources and upon first full crawl I see them all completed within 6-7 hours and a DPS at 22.0
the topology is on both servers, all search components and the admin component only on the app
Second Full Crawl takes forever and the DPS is as low as 0,1 ...Nothing has changed/is done on the servers - the CPU utilization on the APP server looks good - it's not staying at 100% as the previous farm did...
The SQL looks like this in activity overview
I clearly doesn't see any errors / heavy load, so can someone explain me why it's crawl is so low and how I can improve the crawl performance, e.g. any services I can turn of in order to speed up the crawl?

    Hi ,
There are two main areas which can slow down the crawl performance:
    1. Repository (content) delay or locks
(and everything between the gatherer and repository, for example networking).
2.Performance problems based on backend resourcing issues.
For more information, you can refer to the blog:

  • SharePoint Foundation 2010 Search returns no results

    Hi,
SharePoint foundation 2010 Search is not showing any results after configuring the step from the below link.
    http://wiki.sirkit.ca/2011/04/sharepoint-foundation-2010-search-returns-no-results/
    My Server Setup :
    SharePoint Foundation 2010
    SQL Server 2008 r2
We have created two web application and configured the search service as above mention link.
And we have migrated a site from MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010 to one of  web application,we assigned search database to the newly migrated content database.
Previously there was Form based Authentication was done on Moss 2007 site and on SP 2010 we are working on Windows authentication.
Database showing crawl is working and showing success results as well in SQL table, Its only Not able to show the results on the page.
    Thanks in Advance
    Dinesh
    Regards, Dinesh Reddy.

Don't look at the databases, it's a bad habit to get into and will lead to confusion.
In search administration are you getting any sucsess messages in the crawl history and is the number of items in your index non-zero?
If so that implies that the crawl process is working and it's the user security that's the issue.
To confirm try searching for a file whilst logged in as the crawl account, that should return results.

  • Do I need a DLNA supported device in order to connect my SMART TV to the 5 Ghz network?

I use a Time Capsuel to create a network. Then, I use Plex media server on a PC and stream video from the TC harddrive to the plex app in the TV. Previously, from time to time, it has been slow, but most of the time it worked (1080p). My knowledge of network & stuff like this is limited...
    The problem:
My Smart TV (Samsung ue46es6715) does not connect to the network's 5 Ghz band any more. It connects to the 2,4 Ghz sometimes. It does not find the 5Ghz network anymore.
    Info from Samsung Support:
According to samsung support, I need a DLNA certified router. They say it is a compability problem without the DLNA support. So, samsung suppport claim this is the reason why I cannot connect to the 5 Ghz network - the TC does not support DLNA.
    Questions:
First of all; Is the samsung support team correct?
    2) Shouldn't I be able to connect to the 5 Ghz band in any case?
3 IF the Time Capsuel IS DLNA certified I can view, and stream data, direct from the TC harddrive
4 As the Time Capsule is not DLNA cerified, I need Plex working on a computer in order to stream data from the TC harddrive?
5 Even de fact that the TC does not support DLNA, I should still be able to at least connect the the 5 Ghz band?
    Enlighten me please

The TC does not support any media servers.. it is not and never has been a media device. It is as minimal as it can be and offers SMB to windows and AFP to Mac.. and that is the sum total of connections.
DLNA can be supplied to the TV by Plex running on the PC but I am unsure of the setup. You will need to look it up and specifically the issue with samsung TV. Apple of course will never support it.. Apple use iTunes.
    http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/68615-plex-not-browsing-folder-with-co ntent-via-dlna-samsung-tv/
    http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/forum/113-dlna/
Connection to 5ghz depends on setting up the connection in the TC correctly.. you have to realise you are not infact seeing the material on the TC.. you are only networking through the TC. The material is offered to your TV from the PC which is also connected to the TC and I guess using the TC as a filestore.. this is bad btw.. because then all files are streamed from TC--PC--TC---TV, You should use an external drive on the computer.. and share that with the network. Then it goes PC--TC--TV and you stop the double haul out and back to the TC. This is especially important if the PC is connected by wireless. That will reduce speed to a crawl.
5ghz is also poor range.. if the TC is far from the TV do not expect good connection or perhaps any connection.. try it close up to the TC.
Set the 5ghz to SMB standard name.. ie.. short.. 2-20 characters, No spaces and pure alphanumeric. Name should be different to the 2.4ghz name so you can choose it deliberately.
The TC name should also meet SMB standard.

  • IMovie very slow -- how do you stop it showing all clips?

hi. i'm using iMovie 11, Mountain Lion, and a brand new, latest model, retina macbook (one month old), and i'm trying to figure out why my iMovie is so slow.
i originally imported all of my clips and photos into iPhoto, with no problem, and iMovie is displaying all the available clips in the event library correctly. But there's a few hundred different clips, and it's showing every single one... making it incredibly slow to open and do anything.
I can't seem to find a way to adjust the event library so it just shows the event headings (all of the clips are sorted into days, and iPhoto shows them exactly like that -- one icon for each day. i can then click onto each day to see the clips).
I have already tried using "optimize video" from the File menu, and that hasn't made much of a difference.
is it okay uploading all the clips into iPhoto, and just letting iMovie take them from there? or should i move the clips into a different folder?
any help would be greatly appreciated, as iMovie is practically unusable at the speed it's crawling.

Yup... in the end I had to delete all of the iPhoto stuff, photos and videos, and re-import just the photos on their own. Then i re-imported all the videos into iMovie through the iMovie dropbox. That seperated all the dates out into their own event, rather than just having one big huge event. It's super speedy now, so problem solved.
But if anyone else has this problem... if you've got a lot of videos, then don't import them into iPhoto!
