Auto Save & Versions a bust ... bring back "Save As"

Having upgrading my laptop to Lion and discovering that along with Auto Save and Versions comes the elimination of the Save As command and the inability to turn these new features off I will be reinstalling Snow Leopard and definitely not upgrading our household's other machines.
The new scheme is cumbersome in it's insistence that I duplicate the document to give it a new name.
I do not like the idea that previous drafts are accessible from inside the document by anyone who might access my machine.
I do not like that new versions are created and saved without my say-so. I do not like that I am not asked to save/discard changes upon quitting.
In short, the 248 great new features provide me little reason to upgrade but the 249th and 250th features are deal-breakers. Until they can be turned off I will not use Lion.

File>Duplicate creates a new duplicate of the changed file. You then have to go back after you've duplicated, and "revert" the file or you will have two identical changed files. If you want to leave the original untouched, and forget to "revert" before you close the file, you're original file will be lost and your original file will be identical to your new "duplicate" file.
Or you could just click the "Duplicate and Revert" button:

  • TUTORIAL: Disable Auto Save, Versions and bring back Save As

    1. Quit the app(s) you want to configure.
    2. Launch Terminal.
    3. Paste the command below in the Terminal window, then replace 'name of app' with the name of whatever app you want to configure (e.g. 'textedit'), before hitting Enter:
defaults write -app 'name of app' ApplePersistence -bool no
Alternatively, you can configure all apps at once with the following command:
defaults write -g ApplePersistence -bool no
I don't recommend doing this, though, because, for some reason, it slows down the login process considerably.
For TextEdit only, you also need to run another command, as a workaround for errors that prevents it from functioning correctly:
defaults write -app textedit AutosavingDelay -int 0
    4. Relaunch the app(s).
    5. Enjoy you considerably less infuriating Mac!
If you don't see any changes, a relogin will in most cases do the trick (if not, the app probably uses a non-standard saving mechanism).
Please note: Although this brings back Save As in most apps, this is sadly not the case with Preview and iWork.
To undo any of the above commands, run:
defaults delete -app 'name of app' ApplePersistence
    defaults delete -g ApplePersistence
    defaults delete -app textedit AutosavingDelay
P.S. If you want to remove data already stored by Versions, you need to delete the hidden .DocumentRevisions-V100 folder in the root directory of your disk(s).

    Why?
Because the "Ask to keep changes when closing documents" setting doesn't actually turn off Auto Save and can cause loss of data.
Because the Save As "feature" in Mountain Lion, isn't actually the traditional Save As that OS X had prior to Lion, but a useless, mock version that is likely to cause data loss.
Because Apple still refuses to offer any way of disabling Versions.
    Or, in other words:

  • Bring back "Save As" in Pages

Honestly, I hate this "Save a Version"…is there any way to bring back Save As? I want to be in charge of my own saving and naming, thank you very much!

Same answer I gave for someone else exactly two hours ago:
The return of Save As as well as the addition of a shortcut for File > Duplicate comes with Mountain Lion tomorrow. Of course, it's quite likely that the iWork apps will need updates to take advantage of these.

  • Please bring back "save as"  !

what happened to save as???  I need it to work fast and need to do far more clicks now.
If you agree then please send messages to apple in any way you can to promote
them to bring back " save as" ! It is a vital function to keep track of files
    and to work faster.
let me know what you think. ! Thank you

I'm writing to ask apple for this topic. Then I saw your topic underneath, I would better reply.
I agree with you and wanna ask Apple about "Don't you know that the "duplicate" got my life so complicated and I prefer to get "save as" back.
I open my file and edit, adjust and modify but I would like to keep the original file and save this edited file in another name but OK I choosed duplicate I saved another name THEN??? My old file was chenged and save automatically the same as new name duplicated file!!! For what?
By the "save as" I never found this complicated and easier.
    PLEASE BRING BACK "SAVE AS"
I wish you are listening to this little voice.

  • In InDesign CS5 when I "save" a document it brings up "save as" window

Since switching over to my new version of CS5 whenever I click 'save' in the 'file' menu, it brings up 'save as' window and wants to save it in the place I last saved something. Really annoying as I keep getting files ending up saved all over the place. Normally you click 'save' and it just overwrites the original version, dangerous sometimes but much easier.
Is there any way I can stop it doing this?

    Eugene Tyson wrote:
And I don't know why it reverts to the last saved folder instead of the folder you opened it from?
It's annoying, but it makes some logical sense. A converted file is considered to be "new", so it is treated the same way as if you created a new file, whcih would not have had a previous location, and the program needs to default to someplace, so it picks the last folder used for that operation.
Just becasue it's logical, though, doesn't mean it has to be that way (seems to me that prior to CS4 it wasn't, in fact). I think this would make a good user preference, so if you care, hit the wishform again. Adobe - Feature Request/Bug Report Form

I did not remove anything from mozilla firefox that is stored in either appdata or under the windows users directory (if any)
... the as suggested reinstalled the latest version of the firefox browser using the link you provided in the email ..; tested and several issues still remain present and unresolved ....
so please this is urgent or I will have to jump browsers and start using chrome .. because we work 14 hours a day 6 (sometimes 7) days a week, to get ready for the launch of our newest venture and we cannot lose that much days on browser related issues ... so please instead of putting me through week long step process .. of do this .. do that .. can you please actually look into the issue from your end .. • I updated to Lion. Now when I preview a document, there is no Save As button, it is either Save a version or duplicate. How do I get back my Save As button?

I updated to Lion. Now when I preview a document that I have in Downloads or Documents and I want to Save As, when I go to File, instead of Save As, I now have Save Version, then when I click on that it says the document is locked, do I want to unlock or duplicate? How do I get back to just plain ole Save As?
I have no idea why the document would be locked. Help, please.

Here is a normal Save menu in TextEdit, for example:
Now with that menu visible in TextEdit simply press down the OPTION key and a Save As option should appear just below the Save option in the menu.
Now, I may have forgotten since it's been a while, but that may not work in Lion. So either you upgrade, if possible, to Mountain Lion or Yosemite or:
Select the Duplicate option which will open a new copy of your document. You may then Save that copy. When you do you will be asked to provided a new document name. This would replace Save As.

You can but only in TextEdit and Preview and only if you have access to a Snow Leopard installation. Check out the link near the end of this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3745201?start=0&tstart=0 and then proceed at your own risk.

  • What happens when I back-save from ID5 to ID4?

First, I am the person with ID5, on a PC using Windows 7 Pro.  I'm sending to a Mac that uses ID4, and don't know the operating system, maybe iOS 10?  I am hoping the ID version matters more.
I am frustrated because I am sending articles to a small magazine that keep getting messed up by the graphic designer, who knows nothing about grammar, spelling, punctuation or layout.  Via Ctrl-E, I am then choosing .idml to back-save it so that the Mac can open the file.  I have no idea what is seen on the other end, so here are a bunch of questions:
How much difference is there in letter kerning between ID4 and ID5?  (I suspect the other party is pressing Alt-left arrow to scrunch the letters closer together, which he doesn't have to do because I'm sending a laid-out article.)
Do fonts I have that are not on the Mac carried over by a back-saved file?  Or does the Mac use a default font?  I used ITC Quorum, an Adobe font, which in print was transposed to Times Roman.  Plus, I put a "southwest shadow" behind the type in the font; the shadow appears in print at "northwest."  (I mean, come on: I'm duplicating what's on my new book's cover and they have to re-design it?!)  I have sent pages to my book editor via Ctrl-E and Adobe Print .pdf, and every time she's printed pages that have ITC Quorum, it comes through; there is no default.  My book editor has a Mac with OSX, and she doesn't own ID, so obviously there isn't a problem there.
Finally, because of my frustration, I would like to know if there is a way to lock down everything in my article in such a way that the other party cannot format anything; his only option would be to copy and paste into the magazine whatever I send.  This would have to be a function well beyond Ctrl-L.  I am not getting any communication from this person and any time I challenge what's going on, I get blamed instead.  It's a very dysfunctional situation.
In a couple weeks, I hope to meet in person with the person in charge about these issues, with hard copy in hand.  That person knows nothing about ID, and so it will help me to know what the other end gets when it comes to sending a back-saved .pdf.
Many thanks in advance for anyone's thoughts.

69 I am able to read.

my advice is in relation to THAT! and judging by the OP's comments--the magazine appears to not have the newest version of INDD or even a decent RIP (hence the font replacement) additionally--they are opening his INDD file and changing it.
Yes the changes you described can happen--but the original query was 'how to lock down everything'--that's what my recommendation is based on!
You need not to have the newest version of InDesign to place an PDF/X-4 file. At least with CS2 you can place it, if not with 2.0 or CS.
Converting to outline IS NOT locking down everything, it is destroying everything, and yes the described changes will happen.
    tman69 schrieb:
Also--where I work--we never use Indesign to convert color space upon export--we use a rip profile to convert RGB to G7, but from the OP's description--the magazine in question, doesn't have a 'decent' rip.
They have InDesign CS4, so they can handle  RGB PDF/X-4! So any profile conversion is possible on PDF EXPORT! But to avoid a CMYK-CMYK convertion it is better to use RGB images.
    tman69 schrieb:
one more thing--you said "Embed fonts, that is enough!" last time I checked, you cannot embed fonts in an IDML file (which is what the original query was referring to)--however--perhaps the best solution is to just send a 'PDF'--but, I think the magazine in question is not using a PDF workflow (from what's described in the OP they are rotating pages in Indesign and do not have 'modern equipment)--so--I feel that your statement "Please don't make such dangerous recommendations!" is unfounded.
Hey, I am not an idiot. I know that it is impossible to embed fonts in IDML. Fonts can only be embedded in a PDF and have to be embedded to get any PDF/X file.
This magazine is using InDesign, so they are using PDF based programs. And when they work with InDesign, they need a rich PDF, so I recommend a PDF/X4. What else do you want to place? You cannot place any IDML file, you could place also an INDD file, but not from a future version.
No, it is founded. With your recommendations a destroyed and changed file is delivered.

  • New Preview Version in Lion - Unable to save as Tiff, any suggestions?

    Hello fellow Mac folks,
I just upgraded a MacBook Pro to the Lion OS....
Before Lion, I would use Preview (5.0.3 in SnowLeopard) to get my work expense report receipts ready for submission.  I would open PDF version of the actual report, save it as a TIFF file and then open that TIFF file in NeoOffice and bring in the actual receipts (which I had scanned and saved as TIFF files).  Once I had the complete TIFF version, I would then export it to PDF and send it on over to our Finance folks.
I tried the same thing today in Lion with Preview and noticed that I can no longer save the PDF file to a TIFF file.
I tried to pull in PDF versions of the actual receipts to the PDF report and then save but that wasn't successful either (hasn't been since I upgraded to SnowLeopard).
Any suggestions on how I can get around this?
    Your help is most appreciated!
    Regards,
    Vicki T.

    Thanks Terence....that solved my problem!
Can't wait to get my hands on the Mac OS Lion Missing Manual for just such things :-)

  • Autosave not working, and cannot Save Version in any Mac app

I am no longer able to save a version in a Mac app in Lion.
I was working in TextEdit and suddenly got an error message telling me the document could not be autosaved. I had saved it once manually. Doing a Command-S generated another error message saying the file could not be saved.
I tried duplicating the file, and the duplicate could not be saved after the initial save. Moving the file to another folder didn't help. I also tried putting it in a Dropbox folder - that didn't allow me to save it, either.
I did a Repair Permissions and that didn't work. I logged out, powered down - no joy.
I created a test account (administrator) and I was able to save there, and auto save was working.
I CAN save documents in apps that don't work with Lion's autosave normally. For example, Word 2011 will save just fine. But TextEdit, Pages, etc. will not.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I have the same problem as decribed by LeVeau, while working with Pages. This started to happen a couple of days ago. Unfortunately, I could not solve the problem the way he did. I booted my MacBook hitting CMD-R, had to unlock my startup-disk because it is encrypted (as hinted to in the comments of his blog post). When I repair permission, the windows notes "Running" and the turning circle just forever. It never stops. I let it run through a whole night, nothing happend. When I close the window, I get no warning or message or whatsoever. When I reboot, the problem is not solved. I also tried Applejack to solve it, but it apparently can't work on the encrypted disk in single user mode.
Does anyone have an idea on what I am doing wrong or what else I could try? The plist-files mentioned above are not in my library, so I could not delete them. I would be greatly thankful for any help.

  • Can anyone tell me if you can back save from CS6 to CS5 Illustrator, Indesign and Photoshop OK?

Can anyone tell me if you can back save from CS6 to CS5 Illustrator, Indesign and Photoshop OK? Want to upgrade to CS6 but must I must still remain compatible with work. They are using CS5.

To clarify your answer for Illustrator.  The option is not in the "Save As" dialog box.
    The correct answer is
    Open you CS6 Illustrator file.
    File>Save As
The Save As dialog box opens
Type your file name (DIFFERENT THAN ORIGINAL PLEASE!) and the Save as Type is still going to be Adobe Illustrator (*.AI)   **This is where the above instructions threw me, as the Save as type drop down does not list anything about versions to save fo)
    Click Save
Once you click Save, the Illustrator Options dialog box will come up.  The first option is titled Version and has a drop down menu.  Select the version of illustrator you want to save your file as here, then click ok.
    Your done.
I strongly suggest you give this file a different name than your original CS6 Illustrator version as you may lose some parts of your design in the conversion.
    Hope this helps.  Enjoy!
