Auto select layer by click on it

i'm sure I could auto-select a layer by clicking on it in previous versions of Photshop.  How do I do this in PS CC14?

Upper left in the top bar, there is a checkbox for Auto-Selct (Layer or Group)

  • Auto select layer after making visble

    Hi,
Could someone tell me if it's possible to have Photoshop auto select the layer or group after making the layer visible, so clicking the eye. This bugs me every time I make a layer visible, since I end up moving the layer right after making it visible around 90% of the time (and it end up moving the last layer I had selected).
    I'm on OS X 10.8.3 and CS6.
I apologise if I'm the only one with this tiny bugbear.
    Thanks,
    James

When I tried your solution I found out that using Ctrl the appropriate layer ia selected, Alt copies the layer, Ctrl+Alt behaves the same as just Alt.
But using the Ctrl key is an easy way to accomplish what I wanted, too.

  • Auto Select Layer - where is it?

I have "auto select" turned on for the Move Tool and I click on a layer. How can I get Photoshop's Layer palette to scroll what I selected?  I'm having to scroll up and down a lot trying to find my highlighted layer.

    It should work.
What version of photoshop and operating system?
Do you have auto-select set to layer or group?

  • How to Turn Off the Auto-Select Function When Clicking In a Document?

Whenever I click my cursor within any document (Mail, Text, this post) sometimes an entire word is selected (highlighted in blue) rather than the cursor just being there blinking & ready for me to type. If I click again the entire line is selected, then the whole paragraph.
This is VERY frustrating when all I want to do is place my cursor within the document to edit or begin typing. If I'm not careful and click in a document and just start typing, the auto-selected text is deleted. Yikes!
Only my Mac Mini with the Leopard OS 10.5.8 does this, not my PowerBook w. Tiger OS 10.4.11. Thanks for any advice on this.

    Correct, Sig.
When I checked the Double-Click speed in prefs, it was set all the way to the left -- SLOW. When I set it half-way to the right, problem was solved. Thanks much.

  • Auto-select field after clicking link inside Appearance panel

Before Illustrator CC 2014, when I clicked on a link inside the appearance window, the corresponding field would auto select. This made for a more efficient workflow. But now for some reason this has disappeared and I miss it! Hey Illustrator team, can you guys add it back in the next release?
    How to reproduce:
Click on Opacity in the Appearance panel > "mini" opacity panel opens.
Opacity field should be selected so all the user has to do is click up or down arrows on their keyboard.
Just something small I noticed after I upgraded to CC 2014. Not a big deal honestly, but a small regression.

  • CS6 Photoshop cannot access layer by clicking on the part of the picture I want on the main screen

I cannot access a layer by clicking on the part of the picture I want on the main screen I have to go into the layer panel and never use to have to what happened?

I use Photoshop CC 2014 on my Macbook, I don't know your setup, but first I have to select the Move Tool and in its' Options bar, I would checkmark "Auto-Select: Layer".
If you have and it's still not working, right click on that Move tool icon and select "Reset Tool" from the pop-up menu.

  • Select layer/object will not move in PS, but will move another layer. Need help

I appreciate the help ahead. I cannot figure this out with my Photoshop CC.
Basically when I select a layer on the right, and then go to move the object in that layer, it moves a different layer behind it.
In the screen shot below on the left I am selecting the artwork layer on the right, which is the flip flops on the shirt.
From here I can use the arrows to move the graphic. However, as soon as I use the mouse to select the flip flop graphic and go to move it, the layer selection on the right jumps to the shading and moves a background layer.
What am I doing wrong? Super frustrating!
    Running Win 7 x64 8 gig ram, i7, 2 gb Nvidia card.
    Thanks!
    Jason

You probably have Auto Select Layer on. (Options bar)

  • Where is auto-select option in options bar?

where is the option-select option in Options bar

With the Move Tool selected, it's called Auto-Select Layer in photoshop elements 10.

  • Toggle Auto Select?

The Auto Select Layer/Group feature of the move tool can be really handy when you have a ton of layers. But it also drives me crazy when I forget to turn it off!
Is there a hotkey to toggle it off and on? Ideally, I'd like to press-and-hold to turn Auto Select on, but once the key is released, it would turn off.

So simple! Will be a huge time saver. Thank you!

  • Click to select layer(s) missing in CS5?

Just upgraded to CS5 from CS3...long-time Photoshop pro user. I have always simply clicked an element in the photohsop image which selected that layer. Holddown shift while clicking several layers selected all those layers. Not it seems the only way to not use the layers palette to select layers is by right-clickingon EACH layer and then selecting that layer from a right flyout contextual menu. Is this a change? Why does the Adobe team change things like this. We power users are programmed to work fast using this kind of shortcut, and now so many of my shortcuts are changed. Another example is that when in the layer adjustment/curves palette, I used to be able to use command + 1,2,3 to select R G and B channels to edit. Now it has been changed to something else, option + 3,4 and 5!! WTH?
Please, someone get back to me on this layer selection question. Setting somewhere? I just want to be able to quickly click on something in the image to select that layer without right-clicking, flyout, select blah blah blah.

With the Move Tool active, check the Auto-Selection option in the option panel...you can choose either Layers or Groups...and as with any update, it's useful if you learn how to use it. BTW, did you know whith any tool selected, holding Command/Control allows you to see a context menu with all the layers currently under the cursor? Most power users find this function more efficient than using Auto-Select.

  • Move tool layer context menu acting differently to "Auto Select"?? (using 12.0.4)

    Okay,
This is weird. I've just updated my mac photoshop to 12.0.4 and I'm finding that, when using the Move Tool and right/command clicking on an object, the context menu that pops up isn't selecting the right layer?
To be clear, it is highlighting a layer (this is not the initial Photoshop 12.0 bug that drove everyone mad until the update) but it's the wrong one? Results vary depending on where I'm clicking, sometimes it's "close" to the layer I want, say the group it's nested within, other times it's a million miles off.
Yet when I switch on "Auto Select" it's pin-point accurate again? It's like the brain has dropped out of my context menu and it doesn't know what to select.
Obviously I can keep switching "Auto Select" on, but that's an annoying change to my work flow and will slow me down no end. Mores to the point, clearly something is up here.
I've updated to 12.0.4 on my home imac (on 10.5.8 OSX if that helps) but I've been using 12.0.3 (possibly 12.0.2) in the studio where I work and never noticed this issue, it's just now after updating to 12.0.4 at home i'm noticing this weirdness.
Anyone have any ideas, I'm at a loss.
    Thanks in advance people,
    G

To reset the tool I suggest click on it once and then look for something like this in the bottom half of your window:
In the above picture I have marked one section in red box.  You need to click on it to get the option to either reset the only tool you have clicked or to reset all the tools in the editor window.  Of course you have to be in Expert Mode to get this to work.
    Good luck.

  • Move Tool Auto-Select Group/Layer Toggle?

    Hi:
I regularly use the Move Tool's Options palette Auto-Select Group functionality. I've not been able to find any reference to a keyboard shortcut for being able to temporarily toggle from auto-selecting Group to Layer. It seems to me that it would be a useful shortcut.
As it is, the user must select "Layer" in the drop-down menu in the Options palette. It would be much quicker if a keyboard shortcut enabled this toggling.
I've noticed thatwhile the Auto-Select option is set to Groupyou can hold the command key and right-click a layer (with the Move cursor) within a group and it will be selected in the Layer panel. At this point, you can move the selected layer using the arrow keys, but not with the Move cursor. It would be really slick if the Move tool cooperated and allowed moving the selected layer.
Is there some shortcut or technique I'm missing that would approximate this functionality?

You f#*kers have to take into consideration all use cases! A lot of people work with auto-select. How can you just change certain functionalities like this!
This wasn't a problem in older CS4/ 5. This has a direct impact on my productivity!
Please fix this **** ASAP! I paid a butt load of money to get CC license so it can help me improve & work more efficiently not to deal with such ****** issues.

  • Right click not selecting layer

I have been using a trial version of Photoshop CS5 and have noticed that when I right click on a layer, the list of layers comes up like usual, but the actual layer i am on is not selected. Is this a bug of CS5? This gets rather annoying when you have a lot of layers and would like to get directed on the layer pallet just by clicking on the layer on the stage. Has anyone else found this a problem?

the list of layers comes up like usual, but the actual layer i am on is not selected.
… makes no sense. Or means something different to what you intended. As a guess try these…
    • Upgrade your trial to 12.0.1.
    • As C… suggests, Command clicking with the Move Tool auto-selects any layer you click on. There is also an option in the move tool called "auto select'  that you can change, which toggles this behavior.

  • How do you turn off the auto select behavior when working with shape layers?

How do you turn off the auto select behavior when working with shape layers?
I am using either of the path selection tools to select only some of the paths on the layer. I have the proper layer targeted. I have the selection too auto select option turned off.
If another layer has a path in that area, that layer becomes auto targeted and I get the wrong path. Turning off the layer is the only way to avoid this but then I have to  turn on the layer back on between making my selection and transforming to use the other layer as guide. Is there any way to stop this auto select? Locking the other layer does not stop the auto select, just prevents editing.

As far as i know the move tool options don't have any effect on the path selection tools.
You might try clicking on one of the path points or on the path itself with one of path selection tools and if you want to select multiple points
you can shift click with the Direct Selection Tool or Alt click to select the entire path.

  • Auto-select precision in Photoshop CS6 is incredibly frustrating

I have been using CS6 for a while now and one problem that I keep encountering is the auto-selection of shape layers. Trying to auto-select a layer that's within 10 pixels of a shape layer is impossible without having to zoom in. This is a little hard to explain without images... Cue image...
If you try to recreate the above image, where the black 20x20px rectangle is a shape and the red 38x38px rounded rectangle is rasterized pixels, you will see that auto-selecting the red rounded rectangle is impossible at 100%.
Is this intentional and just an issue for me? Selecting pixel layers in CS5 was never this annoying. It seems that shape layers have an invisible 10px area around them stopping you from selecting anything below them. This is so frustrating with pixel UI work.
I have hunted for a solution but haven't yet found one and there doesn't seem to be any options to disable either. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Billy

A good example of why mixing Mac and PC in the same thread can be so confusing.
My comment here is merely to indicate what I see when I do the various functions described. I have no position as to a bug or whatever.
When I Ctrl-Left click on the Layers palette, I indeed get to select any or all the layers, including linking them up which then shows up when you Ctrl-Right Click on the image. At that point I can revert to a particular layer, if I wish.
I have not been aware of this function, and as it stands, appears to be a useful function. It moves things along better for my work. However, I seldom use Layers for other than Adjustment so the OP's problem would not show.
Too bad I have uninstalled CS5. It would be interesting to see the difference.
So far as changes affecting power users, see the new (Ugh!) crop tool. I have many more steps to take to do a simple crop, and the result to my workflow similar to Billy's. Try to crop 10px off the bottom or sides of an image and know you nailed it without having to deselect the tool to get rid of the (no longer martching) ants.
