Auto-sleep, okay. Manual sleep, and it wakes back up. ???

My iMac keeps waking itself up after I set it to sleep. It only stays asleep if the auto-sleep time runs out in the power saver under system preferences. Why won't manual sleep (through the apple menu) work?

Hi Enio
First eject and disconnect any External HD's, iPod's, iPhone's, iPad's, other USB devices, turn off your printer and see if it will sleep.
Next reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
+1. Shut down the computer.+
+2. Unplug the computer's power cord.+
+3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.+
+4. Release the power button.+
+5. Attach the computers power cable.+
+6. Press the power button to turn on the computer+
Then if that does not help, see > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776

  • Usually won't sleep.  Manually sleeping always works.  Whazzup?

I have a Mac Mini, OS X 10.4.11, which usually won't sleep. The sleep menu always works. The "sleep after X minutes" rarely works. And the "sleep at 11pm" never seems to work.
The machine has only a USB keyboard, USB mouse, speakers, DVI display, and Ethernet. Nothing odd, other than Microsoft Office, is installed. Dymo labeler was once blamed for this, but it is uninstalled.

Is there any way to turn on a log file, and get a log message, like "Tried to sleep, but blocked by ....."?

Is there anything else running that might be perceived as activity by the computer? Activity Monitor is handy for seeing what is running, though there's a lot of small system components that can be confusing.

  • Macbook Pro 15 inch goes to sleep and then wakes

The Macbook Pro 15 inch computer is going to sleep while in use and then wakes up. No magnetic items are close to it. It is the strangest thing. We will be using it then its screen goes black/to sleep and wakes up after a few seconds. I thought that maybe it was Opera that I had open so I shut that down. I opened and was using Safari then it repeated. I tried restarting but it made no difference. Any thoughts on this or ideas of how to fix this?

I would try a SMC reset.

  • When I wake my computer up from sleep all the Mail and Calendar accounts are offline?

Now that I have upgraded to Mountain Lion, when I wake my computer from sleep all of my Mail and Calender accounts are offline. This includes Gmail, AOL, and iCloud accounts. The connection doctor in Mail says that Mail can connect to the internet but puts red dots next to all of my accounts stating that connections to both the IMAP and SMTP servers could not be made. This issue has shown up only after upgrading to Mountain Lion, and the only way to resolve it seems to be to manually quit and relaunch Mail and Calender at which point everything goes back to normal until I sleep the computer again. Any ideas?

Further to my previous post... I think I may have stumbled uppon a solution.
Summary: When I fixed a problem with dictation, mail started working again.
Background: I noticed that after upgrading to 10.8.1 the dictation feature no longer worked. When I pressed [fn] twice the dictation bubble would appear, three dots in it would shake and then it beeped. No dictation. I searched for a solution, tried it out and dictation worked again. Then, this morning I opened up my Mac and mail sucessfully downloaded without having to restart mail.app!
Solution: This is a fix for dictation issues so don't blame me if it messes up your perfectly working dictation! However, it appears to have fixed my mail problems:
Locate and delete the file: ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.assistant.plist (Finder’s Go and press and hold Alt option). Then restart your Mac, turn off Dictation (Apple > System Preferences, click Dictation & Speech, and then click Dictation) and reboot your Mac a second time and try again.
    The original thread is here.
So, a random "solution" with beneficial side effects! Let me know it works for you.

  • Manually "sleeping" my MAC results in a state where I cannot wake it

I'm running 10.5.6, and if I manually sleep my iMAC, I cannot wake it. Only solution is to push and hold the power button for around 10 secs (or unplug the unit) and then power back on.
    Solutions?
    - Greg

I don't normally "sleep" my Mac. Today a family member visiting manually put it to "sleep".
When I tried to wake the Mac .... the USB hub came to life (lights) .... the scanner warmed up and reset, but the screen was dark and the keyboard/mouse dead.
I had to shut it down with the power button and restart. I have never had this happen before, but it is quite rare for me to "sleep" my Mac.

  • Startup gets past Dell logo to Windows logo, but not further unless I put it to sleep mode and then wake up

Hi guys, new to the forum and very much hoping to get help to the following problem:
I'm experiencing a very unusual problem that I've never encountered before nor read about anywhere on the internet. After installing a clean install of Windows 8 on my Dell Inspirion N5050, startup does get past the Dell logo and onto the Windows loading logo.
However, it won't go further than this. The logo goes away, leaving the screen blank (NOT black) and it won't continue to the logon page or start menu. All lights are burning (meaning it's working somewhere underneath that weird blank screen). And the funny
thing is that when I press the power button (or close the lid) to put it to sleep and then wake it up by pressing again, the logon/start menu is there and Windows is working perfectly.
In short: everything works perfectly, except that I have to put the computer to sleep and wake it back up in order for me to see/get into windows.
Has anyone heard of this problem before? I'm so utterly confused here!
    Thanks so much in advance!
    Rose

    Hi,
This issue can be caused by failing to load files or drivers.
First, I suggest you to try to boot into Safe mode, and shut down and power on to see if there is the same issue:
Please use these steps to boot into Safe mode:
Windows key + Run -> Type msconfig, and press Enter -> Under Boot tab, check on “Safe boot” -> Click Ok to restart computer.
To disable boot into safe mode automatically, repeat above steps  and uncheck the Safe boot option.
If the issue not persists, please try to disable fast startup to make sure all the drivers were load properly and check the results:

    Can we get this done?
If the issue still persists, please post back the event log (System) here for further research:

  • Mac Pro sleeps and then wakes within a second after 10.4.11

i just updated to 10.4.11 and now when i press the sleep button it will sleep and then wake up within a second.
any ideas why this is happening, and a way to fix it?

Sometimes resetting the SMC on your MacPro will fix sleep issues, as that is what settings it maintains.

  • HT1338 My macbook pro goes to sleep randomly and only wakes up when i tilt it

I bought my new macbook pro last june in miami and somehow it just goes to sleep on its own in the middle of doing anything.
Clicking, pressing the start button, the space bar or anything won't wake it up. Tilting it or lifting the computer would. And that's scaring me. It just did it 4 times in a row and i am just browsing the web
Anyone know if this is a hardware thing or the software is going nuts or my mac is haunted ??
I have the mac insurance thingy so should i call them or what do i do? Thanks for the help

Check your current setup (I left my MBP as "3")
    go to Utilities > Terminal
After you launch Terminal, the first step is to determine which sleep mode your Mac is currently using. You can both view and change the sleep mode using the Unix program pmset. To see your current settings, type (or, copy and paste)
    pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
    press 'enter'
You should see something like this:
    $ pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
    hibernatemode 3
Great, so your machine is using mode 3, whatever that might be. Well, thanks to the documentation for the handy Deep Sleep Dashboard widget, which puts your machine immediately into hibernation mode (so you don’t have to yank all the power sources to invoke it), we can tell exactly which mode is which:
    * 0 - Old style sleep mode, with RAM powered on while sleeping, safe sleep disabled, and super-fast wake.
    * 1 - Hibernation mode, with RAM contents written to disk, system totally shut down while “sleeping,” and slower wake up, due to reading the contents of RAM off the hard drive.
    * 3 - The default mode on machines introduced since about fall 2005. RAM is powered on while sleeping, but RAM contents are also written to disk before sleeping. In the event of total power loss, the system enters hibernation mode automatically.
    also, I enabled this:
    go to Utilities > Terminal
type in sudo pmset lidwake 0 then "enter"
it will ask for your password. type it in, that's it!
Now, when your computer is sleeping with the lid closed, when you open the lid nothing happens until you press any key ... nice: keeps it off when accidentally opened, like in a backpack?
WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss
or the deletion of important system files. Please double-check your
typing when using sudo. Type "man sudo" for more information.
To proceed, enter your password, or type Ctrl-C to abort.
There are several other lengthy threads on this forum dealing with this issue ...

  • Lid won't latch - powerbook won't wake from sleep, must power off and on -

the catch on the lid of this 12" Powerbook G4 does not come out when the lid is closed; it can be brought out with a small tool. what is going on? the computer does not wake from sleep eitherl, must be turned off with power button and then turned on. If only the display is set to sleep, then it wakes up as expected. Are the two related? Is this a case for resetting the Power Management Unit, I could not be sure from the Apple article.

    Bob:
Try starting up in Safe Mode, logging into your account, emptying Trash, then rebooting normally. I have found this helpful when I have had sleep problems with my Pismo.
Is this a case for resetting the Power Management Unit,
    Wouldn't hurt to try.
In terms of your latch, it is likely a mechanical problem. When the tongue is pulled out try putting a very small amount of lubricant on the tongue and working it back and forth.
    Good luck.

  • MBP Will not wake properly from sleep-flash of screen and keyboard for a bit every few seconds.  Under guest account, wakes up just fine.  I also cannot unlock various padlocks to change settings in e.g. system prefs. security?  Any help, I'm dyin!

Not waking up from sleep-flashes lighted keyboard and screen, and I cannot unlock the padlocks in the system to change settings, look at keychain, etc.

Still cannot unlock system prefs/users etc.   Also, many applications are returning errors like:  "failed to obtain the necessary authorization"  or " '' failed to obtain permission" so I've attached a portion of my log, showing when I attempt to unlock (or click on the padlock) in system preferences - User Accounts:

I can't reinstall ML, nor can I create another user (unless I use Terminal, and I'm a novice at best with Terminal).
I could really use some help here as it's been nearly 24 and I am going CRAZY!   Thanks in advance for your help.

  • My MacPro goes to sleep and never wakes up

Pretty much every time I leave my computer alone for the night, I have to do a hard reset in order to get back in... it never wakes back up when I press keys or click the mouse.  While I'm using it, it runs amazingly well.
This is a 2006 Mac Pro, in which I have stuffed a lot of solid componentry.  Recently I made two changes:
    1.  I plugged a third monitor into one of my two video cards.
    2.  I threw in 16gb of RAM that I grabbed from Ebay.
TechTools pro runs tests and tells me that everything is fine... obviously it's wrong.
I bought the computer off of craigslist, and it boots to a black screen with a bunch of white text... I don't know why.  I can't boot into Apple Hardware Test... I really can't boot into any of the recovery modes actually.  I'm stuck going directly into the operating system after the black screen does it's thing.
I would try to reset the PRAM and such, but holding things down during startup just doesn't work for me.
Here's the error report... it also includes a lot of the information about the hardware in the computer (thanks in advance for all of your help):

Try with half the RAM at a time.
Monitor the temps - Temperature Monitor - especially those FBDIMMs to be running below 70*C.
    Amazon has those for $25 (2 x 2GB for Mac Pro 1,1 667)
Your 5770 will support three displays.
Use SMCFanControl 2.4+ and set the default fan speed to 900 rpm, and set a couple more profiles for higher rpm just to see if that helps air flow and cooling and if your temps are normal.
I would also look at running w/o external devices. Like your RAID5. Until your system is stable.

  • IMac turns off upon manual sleep!

I have a new 20" 2.4 iMac that has been upgraded to 3GB.
When I manually put it to sleep, all appears normal as if it's going through auto sleep. But when I try to wake it, there is no response. Turns out the computer has been powered down. I need to push the Power button and it goes through the complete cold boot process. Note that I don't get a shutdown sequence or any indication it's doing anything other than going to sleep.
This does not happen when it goes to auto sleep, only manual.
Anyone else have this issue, or can suggest a cause & fix?
    Thanks,
    ugggh

How are you putting it to sleep? The menu choice in the Apple menu? That seems foolproof.
There is an option in the energy saver preferences to allow sleep with a press of the power button. Regardless of this option, pressing _and holding_ the power button (a few seconds?) will do a hard shut down (usually recommended only as a last resort.) Technically, I guess pulling the plug is the last resort.
option-command-eject will also sleep your iMac. There's always three ways to do everything, right?
I don't think the latest iMacs have the "breathing" power light to indicate sleep. That was handy.
Of course, make sure that no one is interrupting power to the iMac while it is sleeping.

  • Odd Manual "Sleep" Behavior

At the end of every day I restart my iMac and then manually put it to sleep (via drop-down Apple icon). Computer is programmed to wake at a fixed time each morning (works perfectly).
Commencing about 3 weeks ago (still using 10.6.2), the iMac would immediately "wake up" after "sleeping" for only about 4 seconds. A second attempt at "sleeping" is successful! This phenomenon would occur about 50% of the time.
After installing 10.6.3 (apparently fault-free), this annoyance (that's all it is) has continued.
    Any ideas?

Well... I tried your suggestion, but "sleep" worked perfectly!
When it starts back up on its own volition is quite unpredictable. In the past 3 weeks, I'd say it has occurred about 50% of the evenings.
Anyway... here is last evening's log. Can you decipher the problem?

  • Preventing Manual Sleep in Tiger

I maintain a couple of Intel iMacs running 10.4.11 that run some launchd tasks at a certain time every night. If the tasks run successfully, the machines shut themselves down later in the night. If the tasks encounter a problem, the scheduled shutdown is aborted.
Despite gentle "encouragement", the standard users that run the machines occasionally put the machines to sleep manually. I can set the machines to wake up at a certain time...but, because of a bug in launchd on 10.4.11 the time spent asleep is ADDED to the scheduled time of the task. For example, if I schedule a task to run at 1am -- and the machine has been asleep for 4 hours --- the task won't run until 5am at the earliest. Considering that these machines might be asleep for days at a time, manual sleep can cause some real problems. This bug also mangles the scheduled shutdown.
Is there a way I can prevent users from manually putting their machines to sleep? Is there a safe way to disable the Sleep menu?
    Thanks.

Maybe something here, but I would make sure you had a good backup first...

This hint suggests editing the menu interface files in /System. In my own testing, it seems to work ok...still, I am nervous about pushing this out to a half-dozen aged machines.
also related things here. Maybe Applescript could be used as a reminder?

Some kind've automated reminder...? It's a possibility...but they've already shown a willingness to disregard reminders...!
