Automatic bookmarks

Hello everybody!
I was wondering if InDesign 5.5 enables you to automatically get bookmarks in Acrobat Pdf without having to construct a TOC manually.
I see that there's an option regarding PDF tags in the Layout--> Summary section, but so far it hasn't worked the way I would like it to...
Thank you!

Please post a screenshot of what you see in the PDF. You'll have to come back to the web page to do that -- use the camera icon to embed it like this:

  • Is there any automatic bookmark-organizer addon for Firefox to organize my bookmarks?

Is there any automatic bookmark-organizer addon for Firefox to organize my bookmarks? Because I have a lot of unorganized bookmarks, and it would take a long time to organize them, considering I now have too many and want to finally sort them... Like a sorter based off of keyword or most used or wikis or blogs or something would be cool. Or something based off of Firefox Internet Dashboard addon (use that as an organizer). Thanks for anyone's help!

There are many. You must decide what is good for you.
    Go to the '''[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ Mozilla Add-ons Web Page]''' {web link}
(There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for what you want.
    There is also;
    '''[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bookmark-duplicate-cleaner/ Bookmark Duplicate Cleaner]''' {web link}
Scans for bookmark duplicates and allows you to delete them
    '''[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bookmarks-checker/ Bookmarks Checker - check for bad links]''' {web link}
Check favorites for broken or bad links. It checks for bad links and
displays a report if it finds something. Check for 404 links, timeout links.

  • When I scan a barcode in our online database using Firefox, IE, or Chrome, it creates an automatic bookmark causing the data from the scan not to be entered.

It also tries to automatically bookmark if I scan into a google search bar or any other place it could be entered.
    It is a datamatrix barcode.
    The barcode content reads:
    [)>06Y7310400000000XP2344374712V652029760TI114006A1000004X2P00D1P7609400121S1000004

If it doesn't work on any browser, why is this a Firefox problem?

  • How do I turn off automatic bookmark creation when combining multiple PDFs into one?

When I combine multiple PDFs into one, I need Adobe to use the CUSTOM bookmarks I created in the original PDFs. I do NOT want the additional PDF name as a bookmark in this instance. Is there a way to turn this option OFF in Acrobat Professional? I have version 9.

You can not automatically turn off this action nor can you remove the 'file_name.pdf' heading, but you could add a button or menuitem to remove the 'file_name.pdf' from the bookamarks. Yes, it is one more step to perform when combining PDFs, but is you want until you have all of the PDFs combined you only need do it once.
Removing filename bookmarks created by Acrobat by Sean Stewart
    From the above article:
"With the release of Acrobat 6 came the ability to create a composite (binder) document from multiple files, (i.e. File > Create PDF > From Multiple Files.) When this is done, Acrobat automatically inserts a new top level bookmark at the start of each new file. The bookmark title will correspond to the source filename of the source file. While this level of separation can be helpful, it is counterproductive when the user wants the bookmark tree in the merged document to be continuous.
"Here's a sample JavaScript to remove the top level bookmarks from the bookmark tree. This script will look for a ".pdf" extension to decide whether to remove the bookmark."
With some additional coding you can add menu item or toolbar button.

  • Automatic bookmark backup: file size decreased

    FF version always most recent.
For several months, file size of automatic backup .json files used to be about 1.930 kb on all machines that are connected to 1 sync account. I never deleted more than a dozen of short term bookmarks. Since last monday, file size of all of them decreased to about 700 kb.
Does that indicate loss or damage?
If so, how to check and repair?

Note that compressed JSON backup have a .jsonlz4 file extension to distinguish them from uncompressed backups that have the .json file extension.
You can still create a normal uncompressed JSON backup manually in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) as the compressions is only used for automated backups.

  • Automatic bookmark creation and sorting

I have to make 4 quality manuals in PDF (each around 300 pages) from loose word files. They are organized like this
    folder 1
    chapter 1.doc
         chapter 1.1.doc
         chapter 1.2.doc
         attachment 1.1.doc
    folder 2
    chapter 2.doc
         chapter 2.1.doc
         chapter 2.2.doc
         attachement 2.1.doc
         attachment 2.2.xlc
    etc...
Converting them to a single pdf can be easily done by combine files, but the bookmarks are not correctly sorted. The bookmarks are used for easy navigation. Is there a better work around to do such an exercise?

  • How can I prevent an automatic bookmark?

I downloaded the Xsticky addon for Firefox and after determining that it was not what I wanted, chose to delete it. However, it keeps adding itself as a bookmark every few days (or hours sometime!). I emailed the developer and got no help; in fact, he told me to uninstall it from my browser addons and that should do it. But I've had no luck. I'm tired of it showing up. Can anyone help me? I'd hate to stop using Firefox for this reason as it is my favorite browser!

    Bobbie,
You have two options; you can disable the recognition of links, or you can reformat the text to make it indistinguishable from normal text. This would involve eliminating the underline and changing the font color to black or whatever the rest of your document is.

  • Automatic bookmarking tools for Mac Acrobat

I am making an archive of old printed journals that have each been scanned, converted to individual Acrobat files.  Each converted file has been bookmarked by article title.
I also have a separate subject and author index of the whole archive.
I am looking for any advice or plug-ins that can avoid the tedious job of manual linking between the index .pdfs and the document .pdfs.  I found some tools that work with Windows - but I am a Mac man !
    Any advice gratefully received.

    p.s. I have Acrobat Professional 8.2.2

    Your preaching to the Choir.
everyone that feels this way should write a letter to adobe corporate offices. If they get enough bags of mail to make them scream Uncle. They might do something.
Its a shame that a lot of Companies try out a new technology (acrobat/pdf's were at one time) on the Mac community first. Because we are willing to take chances and try something new. then when we test it out enough to get rid of the bugs and the PC Community sees that it won't do harm and actually will help get work done. Then the company drops us faster than a hot potato.
Get use to it we've been getting the shaft since 1983. And it won't change until people wake up and realize MS Windows is simply too, open and too dangerous to use, and move on to Mac, Unix, Linux. Until, the time that MS is just a distant memory. Mac Users will continue to get shabby treatment.

  • Batch creation of bookmarks (Windows)

There is another thread on this for Apple users, one year old, but without an asnwer (except for something in the line of "not possible"), so:
I have got several hundred pages in tree structure, from a 2-pane "outliner"; technically, I'm able to have coded the items in the "tree" (= titles) by their respective "indentation", so if there is item1 with 0 tree indentation, I could automate putting some "$0" before that line, and similar for any other titles, "$1", "$2" and so on, or any other coding.
Also, I am able to export the whole formatted text body, from the outliner to various formats, e.g. in html coding, and then it would be possible to import them into InDesign, and then, from InDesin into Acrobat: Here, the tree structure would not be just a text file with several hundred lines, but there would be a structure like
    title line or $3title line
then many lines of text body
    $2title line
and again many lines of text body
    and so on
which means it would be possible to "code" these title lines, separating the multiple "pages" (= items which then are bound to become pages within Acrobat/Pdf), in order to process them.
Do you have any "tips and tricks" to facilitate this, sparing me 15 hours of trial-and-error?
Is it necessary to include InDesign in this workflow, or are there scripts available that would enable Acrobat to "fetch" such coding from the text file?
Or then, in MS Word, what would to be done there in order for Acrobat to be able to process the Word file in a way that it (Acrobat) automatically rebuilt the tree structure?
I suppose my outliner codes could be transposed into respective headings within Word, but afterwards, Acrobat does NOT recognize those Word headings of different levels as Pdf "bookmarks"? So there would be the need to put "bookmarks" behind all Word title lines, by some Word macro?
And then, in Acrobat, those bookmarks would NOT be of multiple indentation levels (= no tree structure yet), but I would have a FLAT LIST there, to begin with, and from which then I would have to indent those bookmarks manually, one by one?
Alternative question: From my outliner, I am able to export the whole stuff into multiple other outliners; so the question arises if there is one outliner format, or one special export format from one outliner, that could be (more) easily processed further?
In the end, I have a tree structure within the outliner (and which, as said, could be exported separately, too, in order to be processed by macros/scripts), AND I want the same tree structure in the Pdf again, so there should be some way to straigthen this out?
Is there any documentation about Acrobat "scripting" or such, in order to prepare the necessary codes which then would be "readable" by Acrobat?
In the end, it seems to me that technically, Acrobat does NOT build up a real tree structure but for the navigation, but all those pages (all referenced by bookmarks) are processed as a flat list there. So the only "remaining" problem seems to be, how to "import" / replicate the outliner tree structure, and only that (= several hundred lines, without the text body), into the respective Acrobat navigation pane, and to have "outgoing" bookmarks there which reference the respective "incoming" bookmarks in those several hundred respective "pages" - this should be possible to automate in an earlier stage, by inserting the respective codes, in the tree file, and in the text body file.
For an example, the freeware TreePad-to-Pdf is able to create, from your TreePad tree, a respective Pdf tree, so, in theory, if you get your stuff into TreePad (which is very often possible and even easy, since the TreePad format is a common "exchange" format in the outliner "world"), you'll get it into pdf, as was your original tree.
Unfortunately, this freeware does loose any pictures (if you don't have many pictures in your brochure, you could re-insert them after building the Pdf tree, of course), and does loose any text formatting, which of course is totally unacceptable (and there is not any paid version of this tool that would not) - but this tool "proves", if such proof was necessary, that it's perfectly possible to replace the "tree coding" of your outliner with an according, automatic bookmarks creation for Acrobat/Pdf (note that in this example, Acrobat was not even necessary, I just opened the file then within Acrobat in order to see which way I could then process it further).
Thus my question, how are these "codes for creating pdf bookmarks, both ways (outgoing from tree, ingoing into the "pages")" available, in order to try to make Acrobat then import e.g. a html file in which these codes would have been put beforehand (and in which text formatting would be coded by html codes, that then hopefully would properly be processed by Acrobat on import)?
Perhaps an export of the outline to MS Word is necessary, then Acrobat PDFMaker will translate the different heading levels in Word into a respective tree structure within Acrobat; this is technically feasible. But I am looking out for a less cumbersome solution, something more straightforward.

Thank you all so much for your kind and highly constructive help, which is extremely useful for me!
Sabian, the term "Windows" is in the title, and under the title, I mentioned "System: Windows". But it has been with utmost interest that I followed your link; in the meantime, I had search for "InDesign add-on/add-in", but it didn't occur to me that for Acrobat, searching for add-ins/ons would also bring some results! Even on that very same page, there are lots of (paid) add-ins/ons, but if you recurrently have a standard problem some 200$ software can resolve, that might not be too expensive. So I'm very thankful for this new and brilliant idea to trial out Acrobat add-ins.
Bill and Gilad D, thank you very much for the info and the link (I'll look further for other links, too, now) - of course, it's a little bit frightening that the SDK API reference has got almost 800 pages, but that only shows how much is possible (when in fact with "naked" Acrobat Prof. I got the impression that "almost nothing" is possible!). I don't know JavaScript up to now, but I know some other scripting languages, and JS is so important today that this is a very good "occasion" to finally "learn" at least some of JS, and I will do this... which will probably lessen my need for paid add-ins... ;-) So I'm very thankful for this info how to "script" Acrobat. (Please excuse my "laziness" (or in fact, not having got the idea, to begin with!) to not google for "Acrobat scripting" before stupidly asking!)
LoriAUC, you said, "you might try first tagging your PDF file". From what I see, and from help/web, it seems this automatic tagging of the whole document will not only tag pages, but many other elements, too, which means that afterwards, I'll have to eliminate, by hand, hundreds if unwanted tags, since I just want the several hundred pages to be tagged (= bookmarked, then), but not paragraphs, sub-titles and so on. But as I said, I always have the idea in my head to insert special characters into the outliner output file, which then would appear in the pdf, and then tagging just these special characters (and then deleting them) would be an idea for scripting at least; as said, what Acrobat can do "on its own", from the controls it offers to the user, is not that much. But thank you so much for your idea! (Of course, if after automatic tagging, there was a command available to "delete all tags except for the page tags", this idea would become highly useful in real life, too!)
In fact, I have got that problem that from my outliner, html export (and text export) is flawless, but rtf export is unreliable (it leaves out text passages and doubles others, which it does neither in text nor in html export, I checked several times (and several such files) with a text compare tool), which means that the usual workflow Word (or in my case, import into Word), then do some tweaking there, then have things already done (or facilitated in Acrobat) when the file gets into Acrobat, would not be that smart in my case, since html import in Word is not that reliable either, and there are some paid "translation" tools for this task which perhaps don't preserve the formatting in any instance, or such things, and I simply cannot check visually every some weeks, for the same text body of several hundred pages, with just some pages added or altered or placed in other positions within that text body.
I also must say that the non-display of the item that is selected in the tree, and the necessary pressing of "Enter" to do this, as well as the absence of a keyboard shortkey for switching between tree and content, and vice versa, are both BIG FLAWS in pdf for screen use, and I think it's unacceptable that Adobe never did anything to overcome these flaws - we're speaking of version 11 of some ubiquitous software here!
So at this time, I'm also looking out for html possibilities (which also permit 2-column text, as pdf does), and especially for so-called "treeview controls", which are available free and paid, and as I see, here I have similar problem with "Enter" (or the mouse) needed to display content, but here at least, I suppose I could program (after finding and learning the respective commands that is) that "wait for 0.3 sec if user further navigates, but when he stops navigating, show content of current item" command, since within html, and especially with JS, many such things are possible from what I know.
Similarly for the switching between tree and content: JS must be running anyway, for the tree control, so it's possible to assign, in JS, key commands for things that on regular websites necessitate the mouse.
Btw, I briefly considered this for pdf, after reading Acrobat scripting was done by JS - but then, it seems that there is no way to have a JS script running on a pdf, IN RUNTIME - or then, most users' system would warn "there is a JS script launched by this pdf, do you want it really to run?" And of course, people would negate this question, and problably close down the pdf immediately - whilst some JS in html code is widely accepted, right?
So I'm evaluating pdf against its "competitors" here, and I conclude pdf for SCREEN use is far from being as good as it could be - or do I overlook tweaking possibilies?
Then, from html (with css and JS), I would prefer to have exported that into Flash, in order to have some protection at least for my content - on the other hand, good screen "rendering", good screen "visuals", are more important to me than is text protection (so here again, pdf "looses" in comparison even to html).
So at this point in time, I don't know yet what I will do, but I'll begin with learning JS basics, and then will check this 800-pages document for what would really be possible with Acrobat, before taking a possible decision against it.
This being said, any additional info, hint, idea, consideration would be more than welcome, but as said, I'm very thankful to all of you for your kind help and interest in this matter!

  • There's a strange bookmark "(no title)" with no icon in my Bookmarks Toolbar folder and I can't seem to get rid of it, plus it causes some problems.

This "bookmark" can't be deleted nor I can choose the option "Forget About This Site" or anything else. It just won't disappear. Furthermore, when this bookmark is placed in a section (separated by separator) with other bookmarks, it causes them not to be shown in the Bookmarks Toolbar, so I have to place it in a section where there are no other bookmarks but this one, still I can't get rid of it nor know I got did it get there. I tried running Firefox in safe mode and whatnot but nothing seems to work. Please help me out.
    Thanks,
    Ed

I should have figured that out from your original post. I think there is a possibility that your bookmarks/history database (places.sqlite) has a corrupted record. Rather than take drastic action on that immediately, could you do a test? The test is to exit Firefox, rename your existing database, and restart Firefox. Firefox should import your last bookmarks backup. You then could check whether the problem remains or whether you got a clean restore of bookmarks. After the test, assuming you prefer to retain your history, you could undo the procedure and try restoring your bookmark backup into the database to see whether that overwrites the problem record. If not, then we would go back to possible drastic action.
    '''Test procedure''':
Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Switch back to Firefox and Exit
Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename '''places.sqlite''' to something like places_20130614.sqlite. Keep this window open.
Restart Firefox. By design, Firefox should import your last automatic bookmark backup.
If you return to the Library dialog, how does it look?
'''To reverse the test''' (but preserve a backup of your history/bookmark database):
    Exit Firefox
Delete the newly created places.sqlite file
Right-click copy and paste the places_20130614.sqlite and rename the copy to places.sqlite
Restart Firefox and open the Library dialog. Should look like it did a few minutes ago before any changes.
''If the test showed no corruption,'' try to restore your last bookmarks backup. The procedure is described in this article: [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]].
Does any of that get us closer to a solution?

  • InDesign CC book bookmarks not working in PDF

    Hi
This is less a question and more an answer to a problem I was having that I found an answer to elsewhere so I thought I'd post it here for others.
I have a 580 book in InDesign CC with a TOC and automatic bookmarks for all the chapters and subsections across the book's 10 documents. The bookmarks work perfectly in InDesign but when I exported to PDF (interactive, with bookmarks included) only the bookmarks within the first document worked. All the others were listed but went to the first page, not their correct page.
I found this link which gave me the answer: http://forum.rpg.net/archive/index.php/t-319074.html
Basically, don't mess with the TOC after it has been created.
I had made a few tweaks to the TOC after creation, such as deleting an extra tab character, applying character styles, inserting column breaks.
Having read the suggestion at the link above, I fixed the extra tab and a couple of other minor text edits at the source paragraphs, tweaked my TOC paragraph styles to adjust spacing and recreated the TOC. It exported perfectly - working bookmarks across the whole book. So then I went back and did a bit of experimenting and found that I could apply colour to the TOC text by directly applying swatches to selected text and it still worked. To get rid of entries that I didn't want in my TOC and to get column breaks where I wanted them, I changed my text frame to single column and threaded multiple single-column frames of varying height on and off my page. This also exported perfectly. I didn't try applying character styles or making any edits to the text.
    Hope you find this useful.

In my Acrobat bookmarks are visible but doesn´t seem to take you anywhere... TOC seems to work as it should. InDesign makes those bookmarks point to a hyperlink destination, not to a page. And that named destination get it´s name from document name. You have a special character (second character) in your document name. May be it causes some troubles?

  • I lost my bookmarks and I am unable to save any new ones.

I re-installed FF3.6 and lost my bookmarks. I also cannot add any new bookmarks I did this 4 times and gave up and I unfortunately deleted my default user files so I cannot restore from the automatic bookmark backups. I had backed up my bookmarks to a flash drive. The bookmarks are all there and in HTLM form. I tried to restore from this backup but can't do it.
I know I have made a mess but I was thoroughly pissed off. I had also tried to come here but my password could never be changed so I couldn't ask a question. It was finally changed an hour ago.
If someone has any suggestions I would be grateful. I had tried FFv4 bur Roboform does not work there and I am not going to start paying them $20/year just because they won't update their plug-in.
Thank you very much for any help.

Run Windows 7 home premium 64bit

Thank you for answering. I think I have the log in problem fixed at least for today.
I have tried to import a copy of my bookmarks from a flash drive but it won't work. I think I have to make a new profile. When I looked at the old profile there weren't any bookmarks in the folder. If I do start a new profile would I be able to import my html copy of bookmarks? I am getting so frustrated and having to use IE doesn't help matters. I know the support for FF 3.6 is short lived but roboform will not work in FF 4 and I haven't tried FF5 but I assume it would be the same. They just want to make the older versions a thing of the past so they can charge the $20/mo. and I don't want to do that. But I may be forced to. I could change to another like LastPass but I don't really know anything about that one. I really need a password manager for my iphone. Sorry if I have asked about more than one problem but I really want to keep using FF.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Acrobat X Pro with Outlook 2010 - Bookmarks & help!

    Hi,
I am a novice user of Acrobat, and use it to produce the most basic documents with good results.  I have only ever used Acrobat 7, and one thing that I have pushed to our managers here, is the ability to output a folder of emails direct from outlook to PDF, with automatic bookmarking.  It really works very well.
The company now want me to procure Acrobat for the whole projects team for many reasons, particularly the bookmarked email export.
I have installed Acrobat X Pro now, with a view to roll it out, but I can not for the life of me work out how to do what was very simple and automatic in A7.
When I go to the preferences, 7 had an option for auto bookmark, but X doesn't.
This is embarrasing for me at the moment, can anybody help?
    Regards,
    Vince.

    Hi Vince,
Acrobat X does not allow bookmarking of separate messages in flat PDF.
You should instead go for PORTFOLIO creation. This can be done via CHANGE CONVERSION SETTINGS in the PREFERENCES hive of "Adobe PDF" ribbon > Opt for "Output Adobe PDF Portfolio when creating a new PDF file".
Portfolio creation helps retain the folder structure that existed in your mail client, making it easy to traverse messages in a layout similar to that of the common mail clients.
For filtering the PDF content in archived Portfolio, you could use FILTER(s). These can be added via choosing the FILTER icon from the mail archive navigator, as shown below and adding criteria for filtering messages:
    Thanks!

  • Adobe 6.0 Pro--PDFs created from multiple PDFs don't have bookmarks from structure?

I'm working with my company's 6.0 Pro (old, I know, but what we've got is what we've got,) on a Windows 7 machine. I've read online that in 6.0, PDFs created from multiple PDFs, by defaut, should have bookmarks from structure that use the original filenames as the bookmark names. I was surprised to read this, because ironically enough this is precisely what I began looking online to see if I could do, and all I could seem to find then were ways to get rid of that function. I don't believe that our installation has been modified in any way, but the binders I'm creating don't automatically have bookmarks from their structure, nor do the bookmarks I'm creating from the structure by menu command have the original file names as their names. Such an automatic bookmark structure w/ that naming scheme would in fact be very helpful in our workflow, as we deal with large volumes of files where outside data paired with file names needs to be one-to-one matched against the actual pdf contents, and opening files individually is time consuming. As of now, when I go to create bookmarks from structure in my document made of multiple pdfs, I have two choices: "Document", which only creates a bookmark to the first page of the whole thing, and "Part," which creates bookmarks to the first pages of all the documents that were combined, with each bookmark named "Part."
We would be satisfied with nameless bookmarks except that the combine feaure is also unreliable. It usually switches the first and last files of the alphabetical order, but not always, meaning that we can't rely on bookmark order to know which file we are looking at once the binder is created.
What I'm hoping to discover is if this behavior for 6.0 Pro is really abnormal and if so, what fixes or workarounds might be available. Thanks.

    Just to clarify --
"... should have bookmarks from structure ..."
    Not true.
If a PDF is tagged then Acrobat Pro can create new Bookmarks from the PDF's structure (from the Bookmark panel's Options menu).
Currently there is no other mechanism for this.
This may change after PDF-2 (ISO 32000-2) is released but that is still out on the timeline.
    Just some things to consider.
When combining multiple PDFs into a new, single PDF click on the Options button and tick "Always add bookmarks..."
This should give you the filename. If a PDF has an entry in its "Title" this will be a bookmark nested under the top (filename) bookmark.
Also, when combining PDFs if there is no entry in "Tiltle" expect to see the filename as a bookmark.
It there is an entry for "Title" expect to see the "Title" entry as the bookmark.
What you describe for the elements/tags "Document" and "Part" are consistent with what they are and how they are permitted to be used in a tagged PDF.
    (See ISO 32000-1, Section 14.8)
    Be well...

  • How can I use bookmark script to deselct sidebar option by default?

I am trying to include a User Friendly 1-Click link on my site to automatically bookmark a page.
Using the Ultimate Bookmark script this works fine in IE, but when the bookmarking window pops up it always has the "Load this bookmark in the sidebar" option pre-checked by default.
When testing the script I missed that point & took me quite a while to figure out what had gone wrong.
The thing is that while I may be fairly Computer Savvy, it must be be assumed that the vast majority of the visitors to the site are not, so what I want is to be able to deselect the Sidebar option by default, allowing the user to select it, should they want it.
Can I use a simple snippet of code in order to facilitate this?

Those page javascripts for "Bookmark this Page" either don't work for Firefox or automatically "check" the "Load this bookmark in the Sidebar" in Firefox (and other Gecko based browsers). A Bug was filed 10 or 11 years ago to address that "Load ... bookmark ... Sidebar" issue, but it was closed with WONTFIX. The developers feel that "fixing" that feature might create a potential exploit for Firefox users.
Best thing to do is under that "button" for other browsers, is put text along the lines of "Firefox users can Bookmark this Page using the Star or with Ctrl + D."
