Automatically Configure Mail.app

When adding some email accounts in mail.app the IMAP and SMTP servers are automatically discovered and all the information needed is Name, Email Address, and Password. Usually this occurs with large email providers and ISPs. Is it possible to configure my SLS to do this. I tried messing with SRV records in my DNS with no success. It would make client setup much easier.
Thanks

Hello,
This is possible, you need to build your own mail account bundle.
Here is a link to a rather old dev. article on the subject: -
http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/MacOSXServer/Conceptual/XSe rver_ProgrammingGuide/Articles/MailAccountBundles.html
Although I would point out that the location for the bundle has moved to /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/Resources/AccountTypes. Also some of the options / flags are now deprecated - look at the provided apple one in that folder for clues where to start.
With a little work, you can still get it to work great.

Try going to the web based site and see if you can set up a temporary folder there. Move anything you don't want to download to that folder.

  • How can I automatically open Mail.app message attachments after downloading

    My wish #1
Automatically Opening Mail.app message attachments after downloading
    My Wish #2
At least having the Finder automatically default to the folder I just downloaded to after completing the download.
Is this an option in Leopard, at least?

Very clever. But unfortunately that doesn't seem to work in Tiger.
Then again, I stil presume that when you do that, a ile is still downloaded and appears somewhere on your hard drive. If you "save as" the file opened by preview, you probably still need to go back to the place where the file was saved and delete it.
Then again again, if Preview is peeking into a Word or Excel attachment, it may not actually be "downloading it" first?? Strange. If it was a jpg file attachment, on the other hand, it seems more likely that some sort of file would be downloaded to the hard drive as a result of that drag and drop of the paper clip.
I did find that drag and drop capability interesting, though. Even in Tiger.
Oh well. I have to start looking at scripts.
When I downloaded that Automator application that was supposed to "close all open applications", I was surprised that it didn't work. Says it works with TIger. ???
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/
Was I supposed to import it into Automator as an "action" and save it as an Automator application and then open Automator and click "run" for that action each time I wanted to use it? Seams a bit cumbersome.

  • Where do I sync/back-up my iPhone3G (4.2.1) notes on my MacBookPro running 10.6.8 'WITHOUT' configuring Mail App ?

Where do I sync/back-up my iPhone3G (4.2.1) notes on my MacBookPro running 10.6.8 'WITHOUT' configuring Mail App ?
I use my mbp for professional audio recordings and I do not wish to configure mail cause it'll just eat up space on my internal HDD with messages.
By the way, is there a way to configure mail to store all messages and synced notes on an External HDD ? I would be most pleased to know and do that effectively...

Seems Apple is making things more difficult with every OS update. Back in the day you used to be able to organize your applications instead of having them all in one folder. You used to have a lot more freedom. More and more it is just easier to use a third party app. So I'm gonna install Thunderbird until Apple comes up with an easy way to fix the mail app. it seems that eveything in help says you just gotta reinstall the system from scratch. I would rather just use an open source product that I can put into any forlder I want without having to worry about it screwing itself up. Had similar experience with Safari now it seems like it is time to get rid of Mail.

exactly the same problem here, It SEEMS to coincide with the latest security update, but I can't substantiate that. The first couple of times it happened a reboot sorrted it out for me, but not anymore.

  • How do I configure mail app to show email only from "Primary" tab in gmail?

We all know that Gmail layout has changed. I would like to know if there is any way to filter/select only mails from Primary tab to be displayed in Mail app on Mavericks OSX??

When you type in the search box, it will show a list of options. If it's a person select the person and it will show in the search box. You can then select option. Add a second token and you'll get options for it as well.

  • Mail.app caveat

    Hi,
Just discovered a nasty "feature" in mail.app. If you have a POP (or IMAP I suppose) defined and configured and which contains a bunch of mails (thousands, sigh) and you happen to define the same account again in the account preferences and you remove the new account you will lose all your mails. Both sent mails and inbox will get deleted. The message lists are still there but the actual message bodies will be removed (The message from Bla bla<[email protected]> concerning “<Unknown subject>” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.).
I suppose this happens because mail.app saves the messages in Library/Mail/POP-account@[email protected] data directory. So, if you define a new mailbox with the old mailbox's credentials and remove the new mailbox, bad things happen.
Discovered this while creating a step-by-step instructions how to configure mail.app for gmail. Prolly not the most common usecase but having some kind of unique identifier in the account's mail data directory would be good. This is just bad design and will cause unnecessary grief if some poor bugger creates the account twice for some reason or does what I did.

FYI - this is the Mail, Contacts and Calendar discussions for the iPhone.
You should have been provided an error or warning message when attempting to create an additional account wirh the same user name and incoming mail server as an existing account.
When creating an email account with the Mail.app, an account named folder is created within the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account.
For a POP account with Tiger Mail, the following mbox folders are created automatically within the account named folder when the function is used by the account; INBOX.mbox, Drafts.mbox, Sent Messages.mbox, Deleted Messages.mbox and Junk.mbox when Junk Mail is set to automatic.
The mbox folders within the account named folder represent the account named mailboxes under Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk (when Junk Mail is set to automatic) in the mailboxes drawer.
This is why you cannot (or should not ignoring the warning message provided when doing so) create an additional account with the same user name and incoming mail server as an existing account.
When deleting an account with Mail, the associated account named folder within the Mail folder is also deleted at that time along with the account mailboxes within. A warning message is provided when doing so indicating this will happen.

  • Configure Mail reading behaviour

Is there a way to configure Mail.app such that it does not automatically open a message after deleting a message opened previously?

  • Messages getting corrupted in Mail app with Gmail

I'm having a following recurring problem with Mail app and my Gmail (company) account: At least once a day Mail app database is getting corrupted / out of sync with Gmail account. Mail is showing most of the mails correctly in the UI but some of the new messages are not the right ones but rather copies of older, typically already deleted emails. I.e. Instead of showing the real new msg content (subject, sender, msg body) it is showing in its place an older already deleted msg. How do I know: I go and check what Gmail webmail shows in browser window.
Rebuilding account sometimes works, often not. Usually I have to rebuild, close mail app, start again to get it back in sync. I have tried once deleting all Envelope-index files in Mail Library so that it did a longer rebuild. Helped for few hours and then this started again. Mail app is getting corrupted at least once a day. Very annoying because I cannot trust what I see, but have to check constantly webmail, which I would rather not use as my main tool for mail.
This problem started already with Lion and continued with Mountain Lion.
I guess next step is to delete all my account & setting and re-configure Mail app. Any other tips?

I'll chime in here to say that it affects me too.
Using gmail and mail ActOn to move messages around in mail.app. I'll start trying to see if I can make the corruption happen without using ActOn. I didn't have this problem in 10.4; and I only spent a week with 10.5 so I don't remember it happening then.
How do you identify the messages in the the finder for deleting so they can be re-downloaded? I've been accessing my corrupted attachments through gmail's web interface, so your work around would be easier than mine, assuming there is an easy way to find the right message.

  • Mail.App = IMAP vs Exchange what are the differences

Does anyone have a comparison of the benefits or advantages for configuring Mail.app to support Exchanage vs. IMAP?
I can't see any benefit other than fewer folders on Exchange than in IMAP - why that is I have no idea. Also, in IMAP, I see my Notes folder on Exchange but not in the Exchange configuration. Another observation, with IMAP, my folders get duplicated for some reason; I have a "Sent" folder and a "Sent Items" folder along with a "Trash" folder and a "Deleted Items" folder. Some of my deleted items end up in either of the two folders and the same with sent messages.
I sure would appreciate a response on this one... thanks,

  • GMail (POP3) & Mail.app

    Hello everyone,
I hope someone might help me understanding the behavior of Mail.app while working with GMail in POP3.
I switched yesterday from Thunderbird, wishing to give Mail.app a try.
I had no problems in the setup, but what is really annoying is the layout Mail.app gives me.
I have the "Inbox" and "Sent" folders (I hope I'm translating properly, since I do not use MacOS with the English interface), with the "RSS" menu on its bottom. After the RSS item, there is one more, called "GMAIL", which contains every folder of my GMail account (All Mail, Drafts, Sent Mail, Spam, Starred, Trash).
What's shocking to me is that Mail.app downloaded *every message* since my GMail account is active (2005!), for every folder. Moreover, whenever I receive a new mail it appears both in the "Inbox" at the top of the column on the left in Mail.app, and in the "GMAIL" section. Reading the mail from the "Inbox" section does not mark the mail as read in the "GMAIL" one.
So here there are my questions:
    1. What happens if I delete the "GMAIL" section of the left column? Will my mails be deleted also from the GMail account or just from Mail.app?
    2. How do I prevent Mail.app from downloading every message my GMail account stores since its opening?
    3. How do I get rid of the "duplicate inbox" behavior?
Thanks in advance for all of your help,
    Maurizio

Yes, you were right, the GMail account was configured as IMAP.
I mistakenly wrote "POP3" in the subject because I took for granted that the account would have been set as POP3 by default.
Unfortunately for me, I still can't understand how may I configure Mail.app for using POP3 with GMail.
Would you mind helping me through this, please?
sure thing. this actually took me a LONG time to figure out.
first you'll need to delete your gmail imap account from amil preferences->accounts then click on + there.
this will start Mail setup wizard and enter your gmail email and pasword press option. the "create" button will change "continue". click on it and on the next screen you can choose to set it up as POP.

  • Mail.app not getting Gmail

Yes, i've enabled pop mail and saved settings. I've configured Mail.app properly. No other email client is collecting Gmail. I have Gmail Notifier and I can see that there are new Gmails waiting for me. I've read other posts in this forum and tried suggestions, like deleting Mail's gmail account and configuring a new one. Activity Viewer just says "connecting to server," but never logs on. Also: while setting up the newly created gmail acct in Mail, connections were never established for incoming or outgoing. I don't know what else to try!

    1. Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts, and create a new user account for testing purposes.
    2. Either log out of your main user account or just quit Mail and any other related applications, such as Gmail Notifier, so that they do not interfere with the other user account.
    3. Log in as the newly created user and set up Mail anew there with your Gmail account, as described here:
    http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13275
    4. Check whether the problem also happens when logged in as another user, and without any of the plugins installed.

  • Configuring Mail for using with an .me account alias?

I'm trying to configure Mail.app for my daughter (parental controlled new user)
I have an alias of my primary account and it works fine.
I would like to let her use Mail.app ONLY for that alias.
Without access to the main account, an inbox mailbox just for the alias and nothing else.
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks!

Without access to the main account, an inbox mailbox just for the alias and nothing else.
That's impossible. You need to set up a Family Pack subaccount if you want separate mailboxes.

  • Mail app automatically entering one of my configured accounts

My iPhone 3GS started acting oddly last week. When I press the Mail icon the Mail application enters one of my email account's inbox without me selecting which account.
I have three email accounts: two Exchange and one GMail configured. When I press the Mail icon, the application goes directly into one of the account's inbox. It is that account's Inbox and not the All Inboxes as the upper left has the account name 'back' button to return to the accounts folder list.
I removed all email accounts and re-added them. Same thing started happening. I restored the phone back to factory settings and re-added all accounts. This helped for a while but it started doing it again.
If I back out to the main Mail screen with the account listing and leave it there in about 15 seconds it enters an inbox on its own. Very odd. It seems to be the Gmail account that it enters but when I remove that account - it just does it to another account.
    Any thoughts.

You are correct that the mail app will open in the same way it was last closed, but this is not the issue. When I open the mail app, it generally is at the mail home screen listing the accounts, since this is where I almost always leave it. After a few seconds it will open the inbox of the first account in the list. If I back out to the mail home screen again, it waits 3-15 seconds(actually pretty random)then returns to the inbox. If all mail accounts are deleted, then re-added, the phone will function perfectly for 1-2 weeks. Then it will start all over again. This is VERY frustrating. We cannot be the only 2 cases where this is happening, especially given that our phones are completely different and running slightly different versions of iOS. I recently hard-reset the entire phone and will wait to see how long it takes to happen again. I will avoid installing additional apps with the exception of Facebook. I will have a company exchange account, my Gmail account configured as exchange, and my Yahoo! account. I know I should probably not even have Facebook installed to avoid the possibility that that is the culprit, but I don't want my phone to be entirely useless. I don't really feel that I should have to be the guinea pig here, but this issue is particularly annoying to me. And Apple phone care has not even heard of the issue. So again, PLEASE post here and call Apple if you are experiencing this issue.
