Automatically numbering database records

I have a database in AW 6 and would like each record numbered so that I can count records. I saw that I can do this for entering new records, but have already set up and imported most data. I would like the numbers not linked to each specific record but just to give me the amount of records I have regardless of what sort order they are in. Am I missing the way to do this?

Brie Fly's suggestion covers your stated requirement of simply knowing the number of records in the DB.
If you do want to actually number each record, the process is fairly simple:
1. Place the records in the order you want them numbered.
2. Press shift-command-D to open the Define Fields dalogue.
3. Create a new Serial Number type field, accepting the default values.
4. Click Done.
The new field will be added to to open layout (assuming there is room), and will be automatically populated with numbers showing each records position in the current order of records.
Note: The values are not dynamic. If you delete record 3, the values in all other records will remain unchanged.

Barry

    Dear All,
    Could anyone kindly tell me how to send e-mail notification automatically when a record is inserted through a form in Oracle Portal Release 2?

    Hi,
    If you are writing a form on a table then you can call the mail API from a database trigger on the table. If it is a form on a procedure, you can make the email call from the procedure. To know more about sending mails from plsql go to

  • Saving database records in a flat file

    I am trying to save data from relational database into a flat file and then read back records based on the certain criteria.
    What will be a good approach for me? Should I use random access files or sequential files for storing and
    retrieving data or is there some other technique that is more efficient that I can use.
    Thanks

    I don't think that reading database records from a flat file based on certain criteria is a good approach, no matter how you produce the flat file. Using a second database table makes more sense to me, especially since you already have database software available and ready for use.
    (You asked about a "good approach" and then you wanted a technique that was "more efficient". Those two aren't the same thing at all.)

  • Issue with automatic numbering of figures in a Technical Document

    Hi everyone, thanks for taking the time to examine my issue. Basically I've inherited a Technical Document which was imported from Quark some years ago and badly cobbled together in IDesign by a novice and I'm bringing it up to standard to make it a bit more usable but do need to retain the conventions within it. It was written as a chaptered document so I've set up the 'chapters' as Sections in InDesign so as to allow for page number variables and a decent ToC etc. I'd like to have the diagram numbers (and associated x-references) automated too, but am floundering a bit with this.
    At the moment all the image captions are set in one paragraph style throughout the document, and I've been playing with the Bullets and Numbering Dialogue within this paragraph style. All the captions are part of the body text or in their own text frames (As opposed to being linked with image metadata or anything like that).
    The  manually written image number format in the document reads like 'Figure Chapter number, colon, Image number,  and then some have (a), (b), or (c). followed by the name)'  eg (worst case) Figure 8:5(c) Sealing the Blahblah Adaptor
    I realise I might have to set up a named list for each 'chapter' because I can't find a way to define the numbered list to show me;
    'Section number, dot, Image number (starting at one then continuing until the next section starts) dot and then if I need it an a, b, c. etc too'
    Not forgetting I have set up the written 'chapters' as Sections in Indesign.
    If I try adding the 'section symbol' to the number field in the bullets and numbering dialogue (inside my paragraph style)  I just get a weird little blue shape that presumably starts a new section rather than identifies the section I've put it in (so that isn't it) and if i try 'Chapter Number' from the number placeholder menu it only ever says '1' because InDesign only allows one 'chapter' per document (and my chapters are actually sections!).
    I do find the coding system for the 'insert special characters or numbered placeholder' really confusing - I'm not familiar with all of them, (and throwing circumflex's and hashtags in doesn't brighten my day) and since I don't know the codes trial and error seemed to be the way forward.  How are we supposed to know the codes - is there a list online somewhere?
    I could manually type the section number in the 'Number' text box in the dialogue (if I make a named list for each chapter) and lift a layer of confusion but surely there's a way to identify a section in a numbered/named list?
    I think I'm really close but it's driving me a bit crazy - I'm sure identifying levels within named lists might be something to do with it, but I can't see how to alter that. Do I need to set up a new paragraph style AND a new named list for each 'chapter' (section)? The alternative could be to split the document up and make a book file so the 'chapters' become real chapters? (I don't want to do this!)
    There's also something in RealWorld InDesign that worries me a bit - it says (even if I had it working the way I want) that it might number unthreaded text frames in the order they were created rather than the order they appear on the page? Um...
    The other thing is I do have a mixture of inline and anchored objects throughout this document so that might mess things up too?! *Sigh!*
    I'm using InDesign 5.5. for Windows. Many thanks for any tips! Hope somone out there is less confused than me!
    kind regards
    Phil

    You're so right!!!
    I really liked the idea of writing a book in pages. Have to write a second edition of something and did not want to use Word2008 on the Mac, because after one year it is still an unstable beast (crashes, crashes).
    So I checked ot Pages 09 - and alas
    * no xreferences
    * no automatic numbering of captions, figures, ...
    Then I asked my publisher for FrameMaker: The answer was: NO longer on the Mac since 2005. I can't believe this. Not a single decent program to write a book on a Mac.
    I don't want to go back to LaTex after 20 years - HELP me somebody
    and show me a few (automatic) workarounds how to play the automatic numbering and Xref tricks in pages.
    Otherwise it's really neat - BUT - nut for writing documents longer than 20 - 30 pages that need off that book like stuff.

  • Convert the Database records to a standard XML file format?

    Hai,
    i want to convert the Database records to a standard XML file
    format which includes the schema name, table name, field name
    and field value. i am using Oracle 8.1.7. Is there any option
    please help me
    Thanks in advance.

    You could put the files somewhere and I can export them as QuickTime. Or you could find anyone you know who has Director. Or do the 30 day trial download
    Another approach would be to play the DCR in a browser window, and do a screen recording. But that’s unlikely to give the perfect frame rate that you would get by exporting from Director.

  • Using Java Bean in JSP to show database record

    I have links in my Tomcat container that if someone clicks on a specific link it should go to a Record page (Show.jsp) with all the values associated with a record from a database.
    For example if someone clicks on a specific link like this:
    LinkExample
    it would take you to a jsp with database info for someone named Jones and show you his info:
    Lastname = Jones
    Firstname = Mike
    City = San Diego
    I would like to do this using a Java helper class and bean so I dont have any database connection or Java code in my JSP.
    I created Java class file that has Database connection that works with a Java bean. I just dont know how to get the Show.jsp to work with the Java Bean and Java helper class file.
    Here is what I have for Show.jsp and this is the part I have been working on the longest but cant get it to work because it doesnt seem to work with the database:<jsp:useBean id="user" class="num.UserDB"/>
    //do I call getUser(lastname) here and if so how?
    <jsp:setProperty name="user" property="*"/>
    Last Name: <jsp:getProperty name="user" property="lastname"/><BR>
    First Name: <jsp:getProperty name="user" property="firstname"/><BR>
    City: <jsp:getProperty name="user" property="city"/><BR>My Java Helper class that compiles and connects to database:
    package num;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.sql.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import num.User;
    public class UserDB
    public User getUser(String lastname)
    User user = new User();
            try
         Class.forName...//database connection stuff here
        ResultSet results = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT * from user where lastname = '" + lastname + "'");
         if(results.next() == true)
         results.next();
         user.setLastname(results.getString("lastname"));
         user.setFirstname(results.getString("firstname"));
            user.setFirstname(results.getString("city"));
         catch(Exception e)
                   System.out.println("Exception...");
       return user;

      private String firstname;
      private String lastname;
    private String city;

      public String getLastname()
              return lastname;
      public void setLastname(String lastname)
         this.lastname = lastname;
      //more bean methods for all fields here

    Sorry if I wasnt specific enough. I have a link that passes a value (field that is passed is called lastname) to a JSP where I want to show record info for that value that is passed.
    My question is how do I show the database record info on Show.jsp for the lastname field value of Jones where I want to use a Java Bean and Database helper class in Show.jsp

  • Dual automatic numbering in 1 page

    hello
    I need a way to add automatic numbering in a page, I know indesign can add this based on the page number, but I need to add 2 numberings in the same page.
    So let's say I want to have a page from 10 to 26, I want to have in page 1 the numbers 10,11, in page 2 the numbers 12,13 and so on.
    Is there a way to do this automatically and not by hand? I want to add a great number of pages which make it impossible to be done one by one.
    thanks

    I want to print invoice booklets.
    Traditionally I just make one page and then the printshop make a dual page layout and print them with an offset press. Before the offset deliver the paper it also do the numbering at both pages. That's all analog, so if you don't have the numbering module you have to use another machine to pass the papers again. So the numbering is the only variable on the print.
    This is the cheaper method around so far, but I want to find a way to do it with a digital printer because the cost is comparable for short runs.
    So I though the best way to do it is to make a big PDF with indesign with the page as master and automatic numbering and just generate as many pages as I need.
    But I want to be able to print a composition of 2-3 pages at each A4 page I print, so I can cut down on cost, so the automatic numbering is of no help since I need to have 3 variable numbers on each page of indesign.

  • Automatic purchase info record

    how do you create automatic purchase info record, what are the steps to do it, and how that helps in p2p process?

    Hi,
    While creating external purchasing documents ( like PO) in item details materials tab infoUpdate check box is there
    Info record update
    Determines whether the prices and conditions of this purchase order item are suggested in future PO items.
    Use
    Selecting InfoUpdate causes one of the following situations to occur:
            If just one info record (with or without plant) exists, it is updated.
            If no info record exists and "plant condition requirement" was specified in Customizing, an info record with plant is created. Otherwise, an info record without plant is created.
            If two info records exist (that is, one info record with plant and one without plant) the info record with plant is updated.
    Dependencies
    You can specify that prices and conditions in purchasing info records are only allowed at plant level in the Purchasing IMG, under Conditions -> Define Condition Control at Plant Level.
    Other Purchasing documents  Scheduling agreement, Quotations (me47) Choose the required line item and click on the "item detail" icon and put the necessary value for info update
    Indicator: Update Info Record
    Determines whether:
        The purchasing info record for this vendor and material is to refer to this PO item, and
        The item is to be valid for the entire purchasing organization or just for the plant.
    Use
    The indicator determines which prices and conditions are suggested in future PO items.
    Prices and conditions can apply to an entire purchasing organization or to a single plant within a purchasing organization.
    For example, if you create a purchase order for a plant for which an info record has been defined at plant level, the purchase order is based on the conditions in the plant info record and not on the conditions that apply to the purchasing organization.
    Procedure
    Enter the relevant plant key:
    A
    Updating of the document number is effected at plant level as long as there is a purchasing info record at plant level. Otherwise the document number is updated at purchasing organization level.
    B
    Updating is effected at plant level if plant conditions are allowed for the plant.
    C
    Updating is effected without plant data if plant conditions are not necessary for the plant.
    Dependencies
    The level at which updating of the document number may be effected is defined for each plant.
    Hope it clears.

  • Distinguish b/w Automatically created Info Record and created thru ME11

    Hi,
    How can we distinguish between Automatically created Info Record and manually created Info Record (By User through ME11 transaction).
    Where we can see the difference???
    Plz guide...

    Hi,
    In case of Automatically created Info record, Net price and Effective price fields will be blank where as in case of manual info record, you maintain the price under "conditions" manually and which gets updated in net price and effective price fields.
    Also Run Reports ME1M and ME1L, Info records with "Condition       No Price Found" are automaically created. And manual info records will have have "Condition XXX Amount"

  • Layout for editing database record

    Hi!
    I'm trying to make a JPanel display a database record for editing in a nice way, but I'm kinda stuck. Example:
            Id: 10
    First name: Peter
    Last name: Johnson
           Age: 20 and so on. The problem is that I don't know what strategy to use for the layout management, so that it looks good. I use JLabel for all labels and the Id number, since it's not editable, and JTextField s for the other data. I want the labels for the fields right aligned and the textfields left aligned "in their container", so that there is a streight line between the :s. (I hope you understand...)
    Any help appreciated!

    Thanks!
    The missing link was the FlowLayout.RIGHT constant. I guess I hadn't done my homework.
    Thanks for pointing that out!
