AVCHD video revisited... again.

Ok... so I have been reading for a while and trying to wrap my mind around my HD video questions. I have a Canon HF100 -it seems I cannot even read the camera to retrieve the raw m2ts files for storage. I have played with the 3 USB settings of the camera to no avail. I will try a card reader tomorrow -I should be able to copy the raw files from the SDHC card.
I have downloaded the trial of VoltaicHD and it seems to be able to convert some m2ts files I had retrieved a few months ago using a PC and the software that came with the camera. This may work and allow me to store the m2ts files, as they are smaller (native camera compression) once I am able to get to them.
Has anyone had any issues with the shedworx software suite? Namely VoltaicHD, FlamingoHD, and RevolverHD? I believe I am going to purchase the full suite in hopes of creating a workflow to archive and utilize my video files. At least until mac comes up with a working AVCHD video solution.
I guess my other option would be to use disk utility and a "disk image" work around. Haven't tried this, but reading here, as I understand it, its possible to "fool" the editing program into thinking that a camera is connected? As I was saying though... I am unable at present to retrieve the raw files unless I allow iM09 / FCE to retrieve and convert them. The purchase of additional software to archive my files seems like a waste but are there any other options?
Edit: Another option for burning and archiving that I have not looked into I guess is Toast. Has anyone had any luck with this program? I am not sure but it does seem that the shedworx stuff may be a little new. Toast has been around for a while. I would like the option of having as high a resolution as possible -I would very much like to eventually be able to burn to bluray also. Thank you!

I have an HF200 and am going through similar pains.... my best results seem to be with VLC Player, which is free. The current version does proper deinterlacing so the results look fantastic... that is, unless you're playing a file bitrate that's too high for your processor to handle.
My 2.66GHz unibody MBP handles up to 12Mbps files just great, with no visibly dropped frames. 17Mbps is very choppy and unwatchable. 24Mbps... forget it.
It seems the issue is that there's no hardware acceleration available via the OS, even though my nVidia chipset supports it.
Windows 7 has native support for AVCHD, and I can play even the 24Mbps files with no issues on my desktop, even though the hardware isn't as fast as my MBP (2.4GHz Conroe).
Apple has some catching up to do with HD camcorder support, and transcoding to iMovie is a waste if all you want to do is watch movies directly from your SD card or camcorder.
But, if you have a fast enough processor, VLC should work fine, and it's free. Or you can dual-boot with Windows 7.

  • Imovie on my ipad ...refuses to recognize AVCHD Video. Also when i remove video clips already used in a project, it is unable to recognize missing clips after I've put them back. How do I get around these 2 issues?

My iMovie refuses to recognize, import, or work with AVCHD Video. It also refuses the same video clips even after I have converted them to Mp4. Also, when I delete a video clip already used in a project, then later import the same clip back to my ipad, the software is unable to recognize and find the clip again! Help! How do I get around these issues?

    Hi Craig,
I also got the second problem. The storyboard on iMovie trailer has all these missing videos. If I import them on my iPad it doesn't find them.
If you find a solution it would be much appreciated to share it here ... I'll do the same.
    Thanks,
    Rafael

  • PS CS6 has no sound with AVCHD videos from Sony Cybershot

    System Specs:
    PS CS6, fully updated
    win7/64 fully patched
    16gb ram, 11+ GB free
    ssd scratch drive, 40gb free
    camera:  Sony cybershot dsc-hx30v
    files: *.MTS
CPU: intel quad core sandy bridge 2600k, 3.4Ghz
    GPU: AMD 6950 2gb
The videos play fine in VLC 2.0.1, windows media player, GSpot 2.70a (in thumbnail window). An ancient Nero showtime even sort of plays the video (choppy and partially mangled), but the audio is fine. VLC and WMP play smoothly at full screen, 2560x1600.
In PS, there is no audio. Both microphone icons have sound waves emanating and I have tried all 4 combinations of mute and play.
I can edit and save them to h.264, high quality, 1920x1080, 59.94 fps, progressive *.mp4 file. The video plays on the other players, but again there is no sound.
GSpot shows LAV splitter -> ffdshow addio decoder -> ac3filter -> default directSound device (see details below)
When playing in PS, the video is choppy. It will play for ~1/2 second and then stutter.
Searching for a suitable group with key words (photoshop cs6 avchd video no sound)
yields 505 groups. Looks like any group to have ever had cs6 in a thread. Hmmm.
It can't be a codec problem if every other video product I have plays the files. It is certainly not a hardware limitation. It looks like a PS bug.

    Meredith,
It is perfectly legal to decode Dolby to simple stereo with the licensed codec included with Windows 7. There may be some restriction on writing AC-3 content in 5.1 format. If Adobe wanted to, it could read from the licensed, installed codec and write the edited files in any of the audio formats it does support.
    I do not believe it is a can't; it's a won't.
"... only a few digital cameras on the market with that encoder."
There are dozens of digital cameras and camcorders from Canon, Hitachi, JVC, Leica, Panasonic and Sony which use AVCHD and many more are on the way.
Almost every medium and top-tier video editor also supports AVCHD/MTS format including Avid, Premier, Final Cut, AVS, Blender, VideoStudio, PowerDirector, Windoz Movie Maker, Nero, Pinnacle, Vegas and Openshot.
    Adobe advertises on http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/features.html:
    Intuitive video creation
Bring Photoshop editing power to your video footage. Easily enhance any clip using the full range of familiar Photoshop tools, and then create movies using an intuitive set of video tools.
Adobe needs to add a bit of fine print here:
    Easily enhance any clip [1]
[1] Disclaimer:  Adobe has made a strategic decision to withhold Photoshop support for Dolby sound common on many newer and higher fidelity cameras in order to not cannibalize sales of Premier Pro.  If you have or plan to buy a video device from Canon, Hitachi, JVC, Leica, Panasonic or Sony, you may not be able to edit or even view movies with audio unless you also install Premier Pro ($799) or use a third party tool to perform audio brain surgery on your movie to rip your audio and hack it back into Photoshop in a non-Dolby form.
I feel that I was mislead by Adobe. And Adobe is still advertising this "Any Clip" claim even though the Dolby "defect" was reported in March in Beta testing. Please don't advertise what you don't support.
    Disappointed,

  • Elements Organizer (v12) not displaying AVCHD video after import

I installed Premiere Elements 12 on my Windows 8 (x64) computer.  After I import a MTS (AVCHD) video from either my camera and/or my hard disk, the audio plays but no video is displayed.  The MTS file (video + audio) work fine in every other program on my computer, including the Premiere Elements video editor.  The only place it doesn't work is in Elements Organizer.  I can even preview the video in the "Get Videos and Pictures from Files and Folders" import window from Organizer.
After importing the MTS file into the video editor, I exported it to AVCHD and tried importing the Premiere created AVCHD file in to Organizer but no luck.
Seems like there's some kind of plug-in issue, but I can't find any info on that.  The codec must be fine, because the MTS file play everywhere else.
    Appreciate any help/insight.

Thank you so much! Although it's not exporting quite as clear as before, it's much, MUCH better now that I've corrected the timeline dominance - I'd say 95% better; and it will be re-compressed by my clients for web streaming so it doesn't need to be perfect - but the initial quality was garbage.
I suspect when I exported my T2i footage as a ProRes file, than imported into After Effects, then back into FCP something happened along the way that messed up the quality slightly. Although the only difference in my method between FCP5 and 7 was converting to ProRes; which I only did for editing purposes as the native T2i footage needs to be rendered... which ended up being redundant as all my After Effects work needed to be rendered anyway. Ho hum.
Do you think the ProRes conversion could account for the quality loss? It wasn't just the footage that was grainy/fuzzy, it was also the After Effects graphic work, which is why I didn't think the converstion could be the culprit. Hm. I'll have to look into this more!
Thanks again - and so sorry for my delayed reply, I went on vacation shortly after I posted that message and only just got back to this project now

  • HT202465 AVCHD video clips

    Using Yosemite 10.10.2
All of a sudden, I can't import video clips to iPhoto.  I believe it is since I updated iPhoto to new version.
I have tried drag and drop as this site says... Using AVCHD video with iPhoto '11 - Apple Support
and tried all 3 ways... and still won't work...
To get only the AVCHD files, you can import PRIVATE, AVCHD, or BDMV.
Please help and thanks in advance.

    Dont know.
What about the slow down workflow?
I suppose dealing with hundreds of 60p clips interpreted at 23.976  could have something to do with it but then again, this issue didn't seem to happen until the last few months. I can't remember if I saw it happen prior to the last update. But it definitely didn't happen in CS6 when I wasn't GPU Accelerated (I was Software only due to the AMD GPU). Could all this be GPU related because why else would it not have occured before? Our workflow hasn't changed...only the program. The only other thing I think that was changed in the last few months was that I checked the media cache box that puts the clips with the original media. Other than that, no changes really.

  • Import AVCHD videos with LR3

Glad you pointed to that thread; the message was proven repeatedly to be erroneous and misleading.  Windows natively supports AVCHD (e.g., Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center).  All new consumer and most new professional HD video capture devices (including all forthcoming Nikon D-SLRs) use AVCHD rather than, say, the .MOV format that you do support which actually is NOT supported natively in Windows and requires a QuickTime install.
Again, it is a trivial task to have Lightroom recognize/catalog/playback AVCHD files.  About an hour's work programming-wise to incorporate AVCHD capability into Lightroom's shell (and Adobe can simply let pre-Windows 7 users know that they'll get AVCHD support when they upgrade to Windows 7).

  • Downloading avchd video from Canon XA10 to iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011)

I have a mid 2011 iMac running Mountain Lion. I typically download HD AVCHD video from my Canon XA10 camcorder by inserting an SD card from the camera into the side of the computer. When I click on the SD card, thumbnails of the video footage appear on the iMac and when I click on a thumbnail, the clip opens in Quicktime. Now I can view the clip. This is all fine.
Here's my question: when I look at the Quicktime movie inspector, the following appears:
The original footage is 1920 x 1080 since I shoot at the highest setting on the camera (MXP).
But the "Current Size:" above in the inspector is 1736 x 977.
Does Quicktime degrade the footage? Is there a way to preserve the full 1920 x 1080?
When I import the footage into iMovie (which I do directly from the chip into iMovie) is the quality degraded as well, even though the transfer into iMovie doesn't involve Quicktime (at least I don't think it does).
If, after sharing a clip from iMovie via Quicktime to create a file to upload to Vimeo, I can view it in Quicktime and the same thing happens:
The inspector says "Current Size: 1736x 977."
Any advice? Am I doing something wrong and as a result losing resolution?
    Thank you,
    David

  • My avchd video I imported looks great on the monitor, but once I run it through iDVD the quality of video on my HD tv is much less than I had on the monitor

Hope you can help. I imported AVCHD video into final cut express 4, Ive used the broadcast safe filter, and others in the final cut color correction suite. but to no avail. When I export using quick time, and burn the DVD in best performance, the quality of the video is much less on my HD TV  than on my monitor during construction.
Im looking for some insight here.
My DVD player is pretty cheap, but movies I buy are crisp and clean, my video looks blotchy and cheap.
I tried using iMovie and got the same results
    Jeff

Hi Jeffrey. You're probably going to get a lot of comments as to the fact that DVD is not HD quality. It's resolution quality is much lower than actual HD and there's a lot of compression going from HD footage to standard definition of DVD. You might experiment with BluRay if you can get a BluRay burner to work with your mac or burn a BluRay project using Toast on your mac. You can search the forums for more informaiton.
I've been experiencing some of what you're describing for years. I also agree that the overall video quality going from HD to iDVD is just not as good as it's expected to be. The commercial DVDs use complex compression techniques and of course are shot with perfect lighting and equipments,
Make sure you're exporting your FCE project (not self-contained). In iDVD use professional quality unless it's a really long video. Check the iDVD forums for more informaiton about that. Good luck and I wouldn't expect any improvement from iMovie. iMovie is more targetted towards online viewing rather than DVD...

  • I want to play AVCHD videos in ipad from my JVC camcorder.which is the best tool for converting the avchd videos to formats that ipad can play?

I have a JVC HD camcorder that creates videos in AVCHD format that ipad cannot play. Which is the best tool to convert these avchd videos to the format ipad can play?

Airplay is a wireless streaming protocol. It allows content to be pushed from the iPad through the Apple TV onto your connected HDTV.
If she wants to see the iPad displayed on the big screen and/or play games that involves mirroring. As long as it's an iPad 2 (or later) then you will be fine. More info on both has been referened below

Why does my avchd video run slow when i up load it to Elements 10?

Most likely because your computer is not powerful enough to effectively edit that codec

  • PSE13: no sound when playing AVCHD videos

In the PSE 13 Organizer I'm not getting any sound when playing AVCHD files:
These files play just fine in PSE12
These files play just fine in Premiere Elements 13 and 12
The files are from various cameras (Sony RX100M3, Sony and Panasonic camcorders)
Other video formats work fine (e.g., .wmv, .mov files from an iPhone, .avi etc)
Any ideas? A quick search indicates this problem has occurred occasionally over the last several years across various versions of PSE.
    Thanks

    Hi Anewsha
    I use .mts.
To clarify : The problem occurs in the organizer part, where sound
disappears after palying 30 seconds. I run a fairly powerful computer, Core
    i7, 16 G Memory with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750

  • No audio with my avchd videos - PSE8

I'm using PSE 8 and within the Organizer, I can view my avchd videos (shot with a sony hd video camera), however I am not able to hear the audio.  If I view the video in another browser (ie., sony's picture motion browser), the sound is heard from the videos. I'm running vista on a dell xps 420, and have updated my drivers. Have also searched this site, but I don't see other mentions of this same problem. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

It's a codec issue. You need to have dolby decoders on your machine to make it working. Premiere Elements provide this decoder to Photoshop Elements.
What happens when you run these files in some other player?

  • No sound in AVCHD-Video with PS Elements 9

    Hello,
since a few weeks, i am working with Photoshop Elements 9. It was announced, that PSE kann play also AVCHD-Videos. Now, i loaded from my Panasonic DMC-TZ 10 a short AVCHD-Video to the Organizer of Photoshop Elements 9 and played this video, but there was no sound. What ist the problem, doesn´t play PSE 9 the sound from a AVCHD-Video? Can someone help me?
    Thanks.

Interesting Steve. I had not heard of MJPEG Audio. Now, I think of the regular MJPEG CODEC's for Video, but wonder if either the Morgan, or the MainConcept will also allow for MJPEG Audio editing. If so, then this ARTICLE might be useful.

  • Will PSE12 convert my AVCHD videos and burn to Bluray? [was:Question]

Will Adobe Premier Element 12 videoprocessing software convert my AVCHD videos to the proper video format (when I "upload" or "capture" then to my computer) and then allow me to burn to blurays?  In other words, will this software do it all (I have bluray burner installed)?

    Atsugiboy
From what I have read of your camera, it should be recording at frame rates of 60i, PF30, 60p for video with AVCHD video compression and a .mp4 file extension. If these files are on your computer hard drive, then I would start out with an import from the hard drive save location to Premiere Elements 12 Expert workspace Project Assets via the program's Add Media/Files and Folders.
The first video drag to the should direct the program to set up automatically the project settings (Sometimes it does, sometimes it does not). For the does not times, then you will need to set the project preset manually.
We can go into greater details once you get started.
Your camera settings and what they are telling you
60i (60 fields per second aka 29.97/30 interlaced frames per second)
    1920 x 1080 @ 29.97/30 interlaced frames per second
    PF30
    that is Canon's
    1920 x 1080 @ 30 progressive frames per second
    60p
    1920 x 1080 @ 60 progressive frames per second
The project preset that the project or you set should match the properties of your source media.
The project should be able to handle AVCHD.mts.
When you are ready for the burn to
    Publish+Share
    Disc
    Blu-ray
    Use the 1920 x 1080 settings rather than 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9
This is Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc (not datadisc).
We can get into the finer details of all this once you have the tryout and after you explore the program with mini test runs. At any time, please do not hesitate to ask questions or to ask for clarification on anything written.
    Thanks.

  • AVCHD Video studders

I am trying to edit avchd video clips but when I drop it to the timeline, it studders.  The audio plays fine, but the video does not.  I am running CS4 version 4.1.0.  The settings I recorded in was PH 1080/30p on the Panasonic AG-HMC150P camera.  The project settings i am using is the AVCHD present for 1080i30 (60i) non-anomorphic.   I tried editing in 1080p30 but when I dropped it on the timeline it said it needed to be rendered where as the 1080i30 didn't.  So my problem is that I can't edit but it studders so bad.  Any one know how to fix this? Thank you.
Also my video card is the ATI Raden 4650.

My first thought is the same as Harm's, that your computer just can't handle the load.
Having said that, I recommend switching back to the proper preset.  Use the Interpret Footage command to make sure Premiere properly recognizes the media for what it is, changing those specs it gets wrong.
