Does MPEG Streamclip do what you want? Note that AVI is a container, not a file format; the audio and video parts of it may be encoded with any codec.

    what makes you thinking that?
avi is just a media-container, a 'wrapper', no format, no codec.
depending on what codec(s) are in use, iDVD or other DVD-creator-apps can transcode 'out of the box'.
teaching the Quicktime-engine new codecs is done by the free tool www.perian.org
if your files need conversion, the free tool Mpeg Streamclip is highly recommended.
paying licences is only needed, when wmv is in use - Microsoft likes to get paid, if you use its proprietary codecs outside Windows (flip4mac is a MS-owned company).
most $$ converters on the market are based upon the free ffmpeg-library, so you pay for a nice GUI, some one-click-convenience. but the free tools, mentioned above, do same ...

  • Recommended Workflow for Converting from .avi to .m4v

I would like to take an edited .avi file and prepare it for playing on both iPods and in QuickTime/iTunes. I downloaded the trial version of PE7 to see if I could use it for this. From what I understand and have tried out, I can create an h.264 (MPEG-4, part 10) .mp4 file using PE7. What is the best way to convert this to the .m4v format? My OS is Windows Vista Ultimate. I tried using iTunes to convert it, but the resulting file did not play smoothly. I also tried downloading MPEG Streamclip and found I could not play the .mp4 file smoothly.
Am I sacrificing quality by starting with a tool that cannot export to .m4v, namely PE7?

Thank you so much. I appreciate your time very much. That link is quite interesting and will help me understand what I'm dealing with better.
I'm doing this for a podcast, so I need to have one file that will work for everyone who has iTunes or an iPod to include in the rss feed as an enclosure. I don't want to maintain two feeds.
So I think I'm going to try QuickTime Pro and hope that solves my woes.
I'm wondering now if I should still buy PE7 for editing. I like the product and have spent some time with it now. Of course, I wish I could do everything just in PE7 but don't think that's possible at this point.
So I still have a question about the workflow if anyone can help. Just to clarify, if I import .avi files into PE7 and do some editing, then can I just export to .avi and then open the new .avi file in QuickTime? Is that the workflow I would use? I'm assuming that QuickTime Pro can de-interlace the video, change the pixel aspect ratio, and allow me to make other adjustments to reduce the file size. I would export from QuickTime as .mp4 and hope that .mp4 files that QuickTime renders will work in the latest version of the QuickTime player. Otherwise, I'll have to export to .m4v, which I don't think can be used by other players???
Anyway, I think I'm on the road to a solution. Hopefully, QuickTime Pro won't have similar issues.
Thanks again for your time and advice.

  • Converting .avi to .m4v iPod problems

Everytime I convert a .avi file to .m4v ready for iPod format using Quicktime Pro, if the clip is longer than 30 mins, the video starts lagging and ends up slower than the audio.
Has anyone also encountered this problem?

Everytime I convert a .avi file to .m4v ready for iPod format using Quicktime Pro, if the clip is longer than 30 mins, the video starts lagging and ends up slower than the audio.
Most people use one of two options here:
    1) Segment the files before conversion and reassemble following.
    2) Use an alternative application like MPEG Streamclip (free) for your conversions.

  • Some Audio Not In Sync When  Movie converted from .avi to .m4v

I've downloaded videos in avi format and then converted them to m4v by using Export in QT Pro and selecting AppleTV with default settings.
The avi version plays ok right to the end but the m4v loses audio sync by about 1-2 seconds but only in the last 5 (approx) minutes of a 40 minute video.
Any way round this or should I look to convert with a different application?
    Joe

The issue seems to be related to sample rate. Because there's no 'options' screen for the Apple TV quicktime preset, there is no way to correct it on the front end that I can see yet, but in the cases I have had I was able to correct it this way:
open the out-of-sync mp4 in Quicktime. Select 'show movie properties' from the window menu. Select the audio track and hit extract. Select Export: Audio as AIFF when the new untitled audio clip opens. Click 'Options' and change the sample rate to 32khz. after the audio clip exports, open the new exported audio clip in the quicktime player. Select all, copy, then back in your movie, select the whole movie, then pick 'Add to Selection and Scale'. You can then save the movie as .mov. I haven't tried exporting to Apple TV again, since this would typically take several hours, even though the video format should be unchanged.
I tried to simply change the audio sample rate and save in Mpeg Streamclip, but the resulting file was invalid.

  • What quality to choose for exporting .avi to .m4v

More and more I want to be able to convert .avi files to .m4v so I can view them on my iPhone or iPod Touch.
For DVD conversion and subtitled .avi files I am using Handbrake.
For the .avi conversion, with separate subtitle file, I am using QuickTime Pro and have Perian (the swiss-army knife for QuickTime) installed.
Handbrake works easy on DVD conversion and lets you choose from presets, like iPhone. This results in a .m4v file, about 700Mb that I can put on my iPhone.
The quality is very good, even so when I connect the iPhone to a TV set.
For the .avi export option in QuickTime however, the settings are less straightforward. I tried to convert to an mpeg-4 format, but then the resulting file was only 270Mb big with poor quality.
Does anyone has suggestions for optimum settings in the export?

    The solution is actually easy.
Just choose in the export for "Film to iPhone" and you will get an as big .m4v file as the .avi with good quality and hardcoded subtitles.

  • .avi to .m4v

I am looking a way to convert about 20 .avi files to .m4v in order to play them on iTunes and make them capable to go onto my iPad/iPhone. I really really wouldn like to find a free way to do this. Thanks for any suggestions!

there is also ipad converter from Videora had good exp with them for appletv and ipods
and playing other formats then m4v on ios devices mean it can't use the hardware decoding in the chip which result in it using more battery to decode in software

  • How to import two AVI video files & convert to one FLV ?

    Status:
    - Newbie using PC & Flash CS3 ver9l
    - I can import a single AVI video file and convert it to an FLV video.
    Problem:
    - I have two AVI video files... one 4GB (20 minute) long and one 2GB (10 minute) long... and want to combine them to have a single 30 minute long FLV video file.
    Question:
    - Can I do this in Flash? When I "convert" a single AVI video to a FLV using the File, Import method... I can't really see the video on the Flash time line. I'm a newbie so I'm probably doing something wrong.
    - I tried doing a File, Import for file-1.avi and then doing it for file-2.avi... but the two were on top of each other... and not end to end.
Maybe some kind sould will walk me through this.
    Thanks for any help.

Your not going to be able to combine two videos as one in flash, if your using Win try Win Movie Maker, I believe you can drag both into a WMVM timeline and can then save as one file, then you can use AVC video converter or the like to encode them into an .flv or.f4v file.

    to convert my

  • Avi to flv converter?

Hi, I've been trolling the internet for a 100% free video converter, not something that's freeware/shareware but requires a license. I have a big need to convert my avi's and mp4's into flv so that they don't eat up as much of my sites bandwidth a month. Can anyone recommend something 100% free, I just laid out the cash I had on final cut so paying for more software isn't idea at this point and time.

in addition to David's excellent advice... :
flv is just a container; it became famous due to YouTubes success; but YT used the old-fashioned VP6 video-codec for compression; since Flash10, flv allows latest h264 inside (Davids advice); actually, YT offers h264 encoded material and actually converts to html5/no flv ...
but you'll notice actually a 'switch', away from flv to html5, e.g. most mobile-devices (smartphones from Nokia, LG etc, Blackberry, iPhone, iPad) don't support this 'power eating format', and turn to more elegant and much faster/smaller html5/< video > tag + h264 ...
it's all about compatibility and market shares
    .. flv isn't perhaps not future-proof ...

  • Generate AVI files. Convert in AVI from MOV. QUICKTIME PRO??

    Hi,
First of all, I'd like to ask you an apology if my problem has been solved in another post, but I couldn't find it.
I have an AVI file and I’d like to add the subs (srt file) My idea was to open the AVI file with a program, to add the file and finally to generate a new AVI file with the subs included.
I had the wrong idea that with Quicktime I could make that, but after several intentions I have realized that I haven’t the Quicktime Pro, what I have is Quicktime X and with this version is not possible to generate an AVI file the way I need.
I have read a few posts about the differences between Quicktime 7 Pro and Quicktime X, and before thinking in buy the Quicktime 7 Pro license, I want to know if it will make what I want.
I also need to convert a MOV file into an AVI file or another smaller which I could share by email. I prefer AVI format because all users (MAC & WINDOWS) can play it.
I am not sure if the Quicktime 7 Pro is the better solution for me. Maybe you know another program which I can get what I need.
Thank you in advance, best regards.
    FJT

If you are also running the 3ivX codec module and the movie is a DivX AVI, then you you may need to run the file through 3ivX's DivX Doctor II. This utility updates DivX .avi videos to 3ivX QT (.mov) videos. (This assumes other files still play correctly with audio.)
    http://www.3ivx.com/divxdoctor/
"After the conversion you will be able to play the video smoothly, and the audio glitches inherent in the AVI format will be fixed" -- according to the 3ivX site.

  • Can't open some .AVI - How to convert .AVI to .MOV?

    Hello
I've got a bunch of AVI clips that I need to convert to .MOV for film scoring purposes in Digital Performer 5.
QTPro won't open these AVIs, how can I still convert them to MOV? Is there any way?
    Thanks
    Chris

Thanks so much for the great advice, I downloaded mpeg streamclip and I have been playing around with converting my video.
There are many different options and I have tried a few but the quality of the picture is slightly pixelated. Can you advise me about the best option to use to get the best quality picture.
I want to be able to edit it in imovie, so I was exporting it to quicktime but there are many other options which would you recommend?
When I exported it to quicktime I tried the following options
    I have tried compression -
    Apple motion jpeg A
png - sound played but picture was frozen and didn't play
Tiff - same thing as png
but there is an endless list and I'm not sure what it all means.
There are also many different frame sizes, I use (4:3) in imovie but it also had a 320 x 240 unscaled I'm not sure what this means?
Are there any other options/boxes I should be altering/checking?
Sorry for asking so many questions.
I'm not really very familiar with all these terms, it's a completely new language to me.
Any advice would be really appreciated
Thanks again for helping me out : )
