Azure multiple site-to-site VPNs (dynamic gateway) with Cisco ASA devices

Hello
I've been experimenting with moving certain on-premise servers to Azure however they would need a site-to-site VPN link to our many branch sites e.g. monitoring of nodes.
The documentation says I need to configure a dynamic gateway to have multiple site-to-site VPNs. This is not a problem for our typical Cisco ISR's. However three of our key sites use Cisco ASA devices which are listed as 'Not Compatible' with dynamic routing.
So I am stuck...
What options are available to me? Is there any sort of tweak-configuration to make a Cisco ASA work with Azure and dynamic routing?
I was hoping Azure's VPN solution would be very flexible.
Thanks

Hello RTF_Admin,
1. Which is the Series of CISCO ASA device you are using?
Thank you for your interest in Windows Azure. The Dynamic routing is not supported for the Cisco ASA family of devices.
Unfortunately, a dynamic routing VPN gateway is required for Multi-Site VPN, VNet to VNet, and Point-to-Site.
However, you should be able to setup a site-to-site VPN with Cisco ASA 5505 series security appliance as demonstrated in this blog:
Step-By-Step: Create a Site-to-Site VPN between your network and Azure
http://blogs.technet.com/b/canitpro/archive/2013/10/09/step-by-step-create-a-site-to-site-vpn-between-your-network-and-azure.aspx
You can refer to this article for Cisco ASA templates for Static routing:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn133793.aspx
If your requirement is only for Multi-Site VPN then there is no option but to upgrade the device as Multisite VPN requires dyanmic routing and unfortunately there is no tweak or workaround due to hardware compatibility issue.
I hope that this information is helpful

I have done all cisco s2s congiguration over standard wizard cos seems your script for 8.x version of asa only?
(Does azure support 9.x version of asa?)
    How can i fix it?

    Hi,
As of now, we do not have any scripts for Cisco ASA 9x series.
Thank you for your interest in Windows Azure. The Dynamic routing is not supported for the Cisco ASA family of devices.
Unfortunately, a dynamic routing VPN gateway is required for Multi-Site VPN, VNet to VNet, and Point-to-Site.

You can refer to this article for Cisco ASA templates for Static routing:

Did you download the VPN configuration file from the dashboard and copy the content of the configuration
file to the Command Line Interface of the Cisco ASDM application? It seems that there is no specified IP address in the access list part and maybe that is why the states message appeared.
    According to the
Cisco ASA template, it should be similar to this:
    access-list <RP_AccessList>
    extended permit ip object-group
    <RP_OnPremiseNetwork> object-group <RP_AzureNetwork>
    nat (inside,outside) source static <RP_OnPremiseNetwork>
    <RP_OnPremiseNetwork> destination static <RP_AzureNetwork>
    <RP_AzureNetwork>
Based on my experience, to establish
IPSEC tunnel, you need to allow the ESP protocol and UDP Port 500. Please make sure that the
VPN device cannot be located behind a NAT. Besides, since Cisco ASA templates are not
compatible for dynamic routing, please make sure that you chose the static routing.
Since you configure the VPN device yourself, it's important that you would be familiar with the device and its configuration settings.
    Hope this helps you.

  • Setting up site to site vpn with cisco asa 5505

I have a cisco asa 5505 that needs to be set up for site to site vpn to a cisco asa 5500. The 5505 is the remote office and the 5500 is the main office.
IP of remote office router is 71.37.178.142
IP of the main office firewall is 209.117.141.82
Can someone tell me if my config is correct, this is the first time I am setting this up and it can not be tested until I set it up at the remote office. I would rather know its correct before I go.

    Hi Mandy,
By using following access list define Peer IP as source and destination
    access-list outside_1_cryptomap extended permit ip host 71.37.178.142 host 209.117.141.82
you are not defining the interesting traffic / subnets from both ends.
Make some number ACL 101 as you do not have to write the extended keyword then if you like as follows, or else NAME aCL will also work:
    access-list outside_1_cryptomap extended ip 192.168.200.0 0.0.0.255 192.168.100.0 0.0.0.255
    access-list outside_1_cryptomap extended ip 192.168.200.0 0.0.0.255 192.168.100.0 0.0.0.255
    access-list 101 remark CCP_ACL Category=4 access-list 101 remark IPSEC Rule
!.1..source subnet(called local encryption domain) at your end  192.168.200.0
!..2.and destination subnet(called remote encryption domain)at other end 192.168.100.0 !.3..I mean you have to define what subnets you need to communicate between which are behind these firewalls
!..4...Local Subnets behind IP of the main office firewall is 209.117.141.82 say
    !...at your end  192.168.200.0
!..5.Remote Subnets behind IP of remote office router is 71.37.178.142 say
    !...at other end 192.168.100.0
Please use Baisc Steps as follows:
    A. Configuration in your MAIN office  having IP = 209.117.141.82  (follow step 1 to 6)
    Step 1.
Define Crypto ACL/ mirror ACL for other end (change source to destination and destination to source in other side router or VPN device and thats why they are called mirror ACL/ or also called Proxy ID or also called Proxy ACL, your interesting traffic , that you want to encrypt / trave/enter in the tunnel)
    access-list outside_1_cryptomap extended ip 192.168.200.0 0.0.0.255 192.168.100.0 0.0.0.255
    Step 2.
Config ISAKMP Policy with minimum 4 parameters are to be config for
    crypto isakmp policy 10
authentication pre-share  ---> Ist parameter of setting Authentication type ISAKMP Policy is OK
encryption aes-256   --->2nd parameter of ISAKMP Policy is OK
hash sha   --->  3rd parameter of ISAKMP Policy is OK
group 5  --->  4th parameter of ISAKMP Policy is OK
lifetime 86400  ------ >  this 5th parameter is optional , and will negotiate for the less value at either end or by default is will be taken 86400
    Step 3.
Define Preshared key or PKI which you will use with other side Peer address 71.37.178.142, either key type 0 is Plain text anyone can see it over internet, or use key type 6 for encrypted key , say your password is CISCO123
Here in your case in step 2 Authentication is using PSK, looks you have not defines Password
    Use following command:
    crypto isakmp key 0 CISCO123 address 71.37.178.142
    or , but not both
    crypto isakmp key 6 CISCO123 address71.37.178.142
    step 4.
Define Transform set , which will be used for phase 2 tunnel parameters, if you use ESP it can have to sets one cor encryption and other for Authentication.
    Here is yours one:
    crypto ipsec transform-set ESP-AES-256-SHA esp-aes-256 esp-sha-hmac
this is correct but give name somthing easier to remember /distinguish it is a transform set , like TSET1 instead of ESP-AES-256-SHA ,try following (here you are using ESP so for encryption we use first set as esp-des and for authentication we use second set esp-sha-hmac)
    crypto ipsec transform-set TSET1 esp-des esp-sha-hmac
    or
    crypto ipsec transform-set TSET1 esp-aes-256 esp-sha-hmac
Suppose you are using only AH then as AH does not support encryption or confidentiality hence it always use onle one set not 2 sets like ESP(remember the difference) say for example only one set for auth etc but no set for encryption hence AH have no such sets like ah-des or ah-3des or ah-aes, it has only second set for authentication like
    ah-sha-hmac or  ah-md5-hmac
    crypto ipsec transform-set TSET1 ah-sha-hmac
    or
    crypto ipsec transform-set TSET1 ah-md5-hmac
    Step 5.
Now configure Crypto MAP as follows and only one CMPA can be applied to OUTSIDE Interface as VPN tunnel is alsways applied for traffic from inside subnets to outside subnets and only once Cryptomap can be applied to OUTSIDE Interface and hence for several VPN peers from different vendors we use seq no 10, 2 30 for different tunnels in one single CMAP:
    crypto map ipsec-isakmp
    1. Define peer -- called WHO to set tunnel with
    2. Define or call WHICH - Transform Set
    3. Define WHAT to call interesting traffic define in your ACL or Proxy ID or Proxy ACL in step 1 using match address
Like in your case it is but ipsec-isakmp keyword missing in the ;ast
    crypto map outside_map 10 ipsec-isakmp
    1. set peer 209.117.141.82  -----> is correct as this is your other side peer called WHO in my step
    2. set transform-set TSET1  -----> is correct as this is WHICH, and only one transform set can be called
!..In you case it is correct
    !...set transform-set ESP-AES-256-SHA (also correct)
    3.  match address outside_1_cryptomap  ---->Name of the extended ACL define as WHAT to pass through this tunnel
    4. set pfs group5 (this is optional but if config at one end same has to be config at other side peer as well)
    Step 6.
Now apply this one crypto MAP to your OUTSIDE interface always
    interface outside
    crypto map outside_map
Configure the same but just change ACL on other end in step one  by reversing source and destination
and also set the peer IP of this router in other end.
So other side config should look as follows:
    B.  Configuration in oyur Remote PEER IP having IP = 71.37.178.142 (follow step 7 to 12)
    Step 7.
Define Crypto ACL/ mirror ACL for other end (change source to destination and destination to source in other side router or VPN device and thats why they are called mirror ACL/ or also called Proxy ID or also called Proxy ACL, your interesting traffic , that you want to encrypt / trave/enter in the tunnel)
    access-list outside_1_cryptomap extended ip 192.168.100.0 0.0.0.255 192.168.200.0 0.0.0.255
    Step 8.
    Step 9.
Define Preshared key or PKI which you will use with other side Peer address key type 0 is Plain text anyone can see it over internet, or use key type 6 for encrypted key , say your password is CISCO123
Here in your case in step 8 Authentication is using PSK, looks you have not defines Password
    Use following command:

  • VPN Site-to-Site or VPN Client Server with Cisco IP Phone 8941 and 8945

    Hi everyone,
I decide to deploy a CUCM (BE6K platform), SX20, and IP Phone 8941/8945 on Head Office and Cisco SX10 and IP Phone 8941/8945 for branch offices (actually 9 branch offices).
The connection will use internet connection for HO and each branch offices.
And the IT guy want to use kind a VPN client server or VPN site-to-site for the connection through internet,
what kind of VPN client server or VPN site-to-site that recommended for this deployment?
and what type of Cisco router that support that kind of VPN (the cheapest one will be great)?
So the SX10 and IP Phone 8941/8945 in branch offices can work properly through internet connection?
    please advise
    Regards,
    Ovindo

    Hi Leo,
technically, the ipsec users will not use up any premium license seats, so if you have 10 ipsec users connecting first, the premium seats are still free and so you can then still have 10 phones/anyconnect users connect.
However, the 250 you mention is the global platform limit, so it refers to the sum of premium and non-premium connections. Or in other words, you can have 240 ipsec users and 10 phones,  but not 250 ipsec users and 10 phones.
If 250 ipsec users and 10 phones would try to connect, it would be first-in, first-served, e.g. you could have 248 ipsec users and 2 phones connected.
Note: since you have Essentials disabled I'm assuming you are referring to the legacy "Cisco vpnclient" (IKEv1 client) which does not require any license on the ASA. But for the benefit of others reading this thread: if  you do have Anyconnect clients (using SSL or IPsec/IKEv2) for which you currently have an Essentials license, then note that the Essentials and Premium license cannot co-exist. So for e.g. 240 Anyconnect users and no phones, you can use Essentials. For 240 Anyconnect users and 10 phones, you need a 250-seat Premium license (and a vpn phone license).

  • How to configure VPN with Cisco ASA 5505 behind Actiontec MI424WR

I'm trying to test my Cisco VPN client from my workplace to my home where I have a Cisco ASA 5505 (VPN server) behind the Actiontec MI424WR.  I'm able to Ping the Actiontec external IP.  I also have Port Forwarding for IKE and IPSec configured on the Actiontec, but I cannot establish the VPN connection.
What do I need to configure on the Actiontec to make this work?
Also, when I test this at home, the MI424WR acts as the DHCP server for my laptop and the Cisco outside interface.  At home, I'm able to establish the VPN connection from my laptop to the ASA, allowing me to see a shared drive behind the ASA.  However, at home, I cannot go to the Internet while using the VPN client.
    Thanks for any help.
    Steve

    http://www.dslreports.com/faq/verizonfios/3.0_Networking
those are the best sample config's and resources on how to set the FiOS network
Bridging is possible but difficult.  That link will give you great info on it.
Are you a FiOS customer that has phone/internet/tv
or no tv?   or no phone?    You have to be careful on your configuration or you might lose some TV features and functionality, like the Interactive Program Guide, or the VOD or the Widgets.
Sorry the Portforwarding wasn't enough to resolve your issue, I am not sure that it's a Actiontec config you are looking for, from my understanding of Cisco's and FiOS it may be something behind the cisco that is causing an issue.  You may want to reach out to the Cisco admin that manages that, and find out if there are additional ports that are required and then you can come back and configure those ports too.

  • How can I debug VPN connections on a Cisco ASA?

    Hi,
I have a Cisco ASA and I am trying to get a Cisco 877 DSL router connected to it using the ASDM VPN wizard, but can't.
I have just had the 877 DSL router connect to my Cisco Concentrator and have simlpy changed the peer address on the router to now point to the ASA's external IP instead of the Concentrator. The Concentrator is good because I like it's real-time event viewer and it can tell me if the Concentrator is even seeing the connection attempt, but how can I dall this on the ASA?
    Thanks

  • Building the site structure for a dynamic website with JSF

    Hi,
    I am still a JSF-beginner.
    I try to build a fully-functional base-demo-application with a fix and a dynamic part.
Fix part for menu, dynamic part for site-content.
At the moment, the JSF-hyperlinks of the main menu work, but any JSF-parts in the included documents of the dynamic part are not shown. I guess, this is dued to inclusion of subviews, but I cannot find any similar examples in the web to come one step further.
    Here my complete demo:

Who can name me that code positions responsible for that the JSF link in the dynamic part is not shown?
It is not that it does not work it is not shown. The JSF tree seems to be cut because of wrong use of view and subview etc.
(To put view tags in site1.jsp and site2.jsp does not help.)
(Once having afforded an example it should go... (*Then* with JSTL, external CSS, etc. ;) )
Dynamical site structure with include files is the big problem at the moment.)
    bye, Maik

I found your following suggestions for such cases (seems you are the only profound JSF freak in the world...? :-) )
Switch between subviews in one main page
    http://balusc.blogspot.com/2007/01/dynamic-jsf-subviews.html
But the main problem for me is that I never find complete examples, but always fragments and it would be important for a beginner to have at least once a complete JSF example over a few subviews, especially here where it is very easy to corrupt the internal tree.
(Some examples use the subview tags in the calling JSP, some in the called e.g.... Does not matter where to put it? Some use verbatim tags for HTML code outside JSF, some don't... and so on)
Can anyone give me an URL for a complete example of a JSF site (with all files as possible, I am not very patient, too, but in this case it makes sense to have it entire ;-) ) with dynamic switches of subviews as preferentially used for bigger portal sites?

  • Setting up IPsec VPNs to use with Cisco Anyconnect

So I've been having trouble setting up vpns on our ASA 5510. I would like to use IPsec VPNs so that we don't have to worry about licensing issues, but from what I've read you can do this with and still use Cisco Anyconnect. My knowledge on how to set up VPNs especially in iOS verion 8.4 is limited so I've been using a combination of command line and ASDM.
I'm finally able to connect from a remote location but once I connect, nothing else works. From what I've read, you can use IPsec for client-to-lan connections. I've been using a preshared key for this. Documentation is limited on what should happen after you connect? Shouldn't I be able to access computers that are local to the vpn connection? I'm trying to set this up from work. If I VPN from home, shouldn't I be able to access all resources at work? I think because I've used the command line as well as ASDM I've confused some of the configuration. Plus I think some of the default policies are confusing me too. So I probably need a lot of help. Below is my current configuration with IP address altered and stuff that is completely non-related to vpns removed.
NOTE: We are still testing this ASA and it isn't in production.
Any help you can give me is much appreciated.

So then what does this mean for us VPN-wise? Is there any way we can set up multiple VPNs with this license?

  • Will Nortel's Contivity VPN Client work with Cisco's VPN 3000 concentrator?

Hi, need help. We have VPN 3000 concentrator and a number of VPN clients (these are using Cisco VPN client).
We have one user that wants to use Nortel's Contivity VPN Client. Will this work with the Cisco COncentrator 3000?

Tricky question - in theory yes, if the nortel client follows all the ISPEC RFC's.
I did try to get the cisco VPN client working on a Nortel Contivity once - did not get it working - but did'nt have that much time to test and get it working.
My advise - Configure, TEST DEBUG TEST DEBUG!

  • Cisco ASA 5505 Site to Site VPN

    Hello All,
First time posting to the forums. I've been working with Cisco ASA 5505 for a number of months and recently I purchased a 2nd ASA with the goal of setting up Site to Site VPN tunnel. It look so simple from the number of videos that I have watched on the internet. But when I have done it suprise suprise it didn't work for me ... I have deleted the tunnels a number of times and attempted to recreate them. I am using the VPN wizard in the ADM to create the tunnel. Both the asa are 5505 and have the same same firmware etc.
I would appreciate any help that can be directed towards this issue please.  Slowly losing my mind
    Please see details below:
    Both ADM are 7.1

    Hi,
Thanks for the help to date
I now have the Site to Site working but there is one little issue I have. If I try to RD to a server through the tunnel it will not allow connection on the first attempt however if I ping that host and then attempt to RD it will allow the connection. It looks like the host is asleep until it receives traffic through the tunnel. Is this thje correct behaviour.
    See below the details:

  • Unable to access certain ports over Site to Site VPN

We have a client that has a Cisco 1801W Firewall that is setup as a site to site VPN terminating to a Cisco ASA 5505. The tunnel is up and established, I can ping from both sides of the tunnel.
The problem is the clients behind the Cisco ASA (192.168.2.x) cannot reach certain ports behind the Router (192.168.1.x). The main thing we're trying to do is browse via UNC path (ex: \\192.168.1.120 from a 192.168.2.x machine).
    I got 3389 working after I changed the -
    ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.1.120 3389 y.y.x.x 3389 route-map SDM_RMAP_1 extendable
Modified the command to include the public IP instead of interface FastEthernet0
I believe it has something to do with the way NAT and route-maps are setup currently but I'm not familar enough with them to make the changes. I worked with Cisco to ensure the VPN tunnel was fine and it's something security related on the Router.
Here is the configuration (removed a few lines not necessary. y.y.x.x = WAN IP of Router x.x.y.y = WAN IP of ASA).

    Hello Frank,
Just to clarify, you have changed the rule so y.y.x.x is router WAN link:
    ip nat inside source static tcp 192.168.1.120 3389 y.y.x.x 3389 route-map SDM_RMAP_1 extendable
and after that you could access 192.168.1.120:3389 from 192.168.2.0 networks ?
Above rule do a static translation of 192.168.1.120 3389 to your WAN link for all traffic EXCEPT VPN.
So maybe you were trying to access y.y.x.x (not 192.168.1.120) port 3389 from 192.168.2.0 networks ?
(and that traffic is not being sent via VPN but just normally routed through internet)

  • Cisco ASA 5505 Site to site VPN IPSEC tunnel to an Clavister Firewall

    Hi,
I have weird problem with a Site to site VPN tunnel from a Cisco ASA 5505 to an Clavister Firewall.
When I restart the Cisco ASA 5505 the tunnel is up and down,up, down, down, and I get all strange messages when I see if the tunnel is up or down with the syntax: show crypto isakmp sa
After a while like 5-10 min the vpn site to site tunnel is up and here is the strange thing happening I have all accesslists and tunnel accesslists right I can only access one remote network (Main site Clavister Firewall) trought the vpn tunnel behind the Cisco ASA 5505, and I have 5 more remote networks that I want to access but only one remote network is working trought the vpn tunnel behind the Cisco ASA. I see that when I do this syntax in ASA: show crypto ipsec sa.
They had a Clavister Firewall before on that site before and now they have a Cisco ASA 5505 and all the rules on the main site thats have the big Clavister Firewall is intact so the problems are in the Cisco ASA 5505.
Here is some logs that ASDM give me about the tunnel issue, but like I said, the tunnel is up and only one remote network is reachable in that tunnel.....

    Hi,
I'd start by getting the configuration of the remote site related to Local/Remote network configurations and go through them. Even though no changes have been made.
If they are mirror images of eachother already I'd say its probably some problem related to Cisco/Clavister setup
Seems especially wierd to me that one of the error messages includes 0.0.0.0 lines.
I have run into some problems with L2L VPN configurations when our Cisco device just doesnt want to work with the remote end device. In some cases we have confirmed that our networks defined for the L2L VPN are exactly the same and yet when checking debugs on the ASA side we can see the remote end device using totally wrong network masks for the VPN negotiaton and therefore it failed. That problem we corrected with changing the network masks a bit.
Maybe you could try to change the Encryption Domain configurations a bit and test it then.
You could also maybe take some debugs on the Phase2 and see if you get anymore  hints as to what could be the problem when only one network is working for the L2L VPN.

  • Cisco ASA 5510 Site to Site VPN with Sonicwall

I am trying to setup a VPN tunnel between a Cisco ASA 5510 (Version 8.2(2)) and Sonicwall TZ200. I got tunnel up and going and I am able to ping the Cisco ASA internal IP from the Sonicwall LAN but nothing else works. When I try to ping a host behind the Cisco ASA from the Sonicwall LAN I get the following message "Asymmetric NAT rules matched for forward and reverse flows; Connection for tcp src outside:10.20.10.x/xxxx dst inside:10.20.2.x/xxxx denied due to NAT reverse path failures" on the ASA
Googling the above error shows issues with version 8.3 and later which looked like the nat commands were changed but the ASA I am working on is still on 8.2 and the other common issue is not adding a NAT exemption. I have double-triple checked that I did add a NAT exception rule from the hosts on the cisco network to the hosts on the Sonicwall network. Seems like I have hit a road block so any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  • Include multiple sub-interfaces in Cisco ASA for VPN tunnel

I am trying to create a VPN tunnel between two Cisco ASAs where one ASA has multiple sub-interfaces.
Say, In Cisco ASA 5550(in datacentre), I created multiple subinterfaces with VLAN ID as below:
    Inside, int0/1 : 10.1.1.0/24
    DMZ, int0/1.100: 10.1.100.0/24 (VLAN 100)
    Production, int 0/1.101 : 10.1.101.0/24 (VLAN 101)
    Management, int 0/1.102: 10.1.102.0/24 (VLAN 102)
And another Cisco ASA 5505 is only configured with 1 x inside interface Inside, int 0/1: 192.168.1.0/24
So far, I have only been able to provide outside access to one of the sub-interfaces as NAT rule on inside interface didn't work for VLANs. Hence had to issue Global NAT rule to be applied on Production subinterface so that production VLAN can have outside access. I have managed to establish VPN tunnel between two ASAs on Production sub-interface only, Source interface = Production subinterface
    Additional settings:
Have ACL to allow all sub interfaces to access outsite ( lower security level)
NAT rules is configured on Production subinterface with Source NAT Type as Dynamic PAT; when this was configured with source interface as inside, PCs behind various VLAN coun't access internet.
I want to establish a site-to-site VPN tunnel with multiple sub-interfaces of Cisco ASA 5550 to Cisco ASA 5505. Would you please suggest what I am missing in my configuration? I need to be able to access multiple VLANs of datacentre from remote site.
