  • Switching back to Mail from Outlook (for Mac)

I've had my Mac for only about 8 months now and was happy with Apple Mail - at first. Then I got a hold of MS Outlook 2011 (for Mac) and switched. Now, with the impending revamping of Mail with Mac OS X Lion, I want to switch back to Mail but there doesn't seem to be a simple way to do it that will transfer all my emails and folders etc.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the tip. I had stumbled across this article but became lost amongst the technobabble. It seems like an awfully convoluted process. I downloaded the file converter program referenced but it's the exporting of the Outlook emails that is so time consuming. I can't seem to select all the folders at once (and I have a lot).
    Thanks again! I'll keep trying.

  • How can I back up mail boxes to an external drive (not using Time Machine)?

I recently lost all of my mailboxes when switching from Mavericks back to Mountain Lion; I still have all of my emails, just without the mailboxes I'd created over the past 6 years to organize these emails.  The files that control organization information for Mail, iPhoto, and iTunes must not be obvious.  The 2 Apple "Geniuses" who wiped my computer after assuring me I'd backed up everything I needed clearly didn't think of mailboxes (Mail), events and albums (iPhoto), and playlists and ratings (iTunes) -- lost all of those.  Would greatly appreciate it if someone could tell me where to find the organizational files for Mail that contain the "smart" and regular mailboxes.  Thank you!

Are you referring to mailboxes as in different email domain providers (AOL, Yahoo, GMail, etc???)
Or are you referring to mailboxes as in archived folders with various messages in each?
If the latter, have you considered moving it all to iCloud and not storing anything locally?
I have my folders/boxes in iCloud and dont' botehr with storing anything locally anymore. Too much pain to worry about saving the mailboxes on a USB stick any time you reinstall your OS X.
Moreover ,the new versions always needed to be updated after you imported them back into Mail app.
    Just a thought....
Unless you have more than 5GB of mail stored, I woudl consider moving it to iCloud once and for all.

  • How do I get my email history off of my POP servers and BACK into Mail?

I was trying to change the name of a folder in my OS 10.4 Tiger Mail application. It generated an error message, (I do not know the exact message) it said that I could not change the name of that folder. After the error message left the screen, ALL of the email in that folder disappeared. Including all of the email in the 24 sub-folders that I had created... Poof... Gone... My entire business email history for the past month.
I was able to access my account info (through the Account Info panel) for all 4 of my POP accounts located on different POP servers. Thankfully, my email history has NOT been deleted off of those servers. So my question is:
How do I get my email history off of my POP servers and BACK into Mail?
I DO NOT want to delete ANY email from the servers, I just want to get my history back into Tiger Mail... Someone help me please...

I spoke with Mac Tech Support. To get my messages from my server back into Mail, I was told to mark my email (on my webmail server) as unread. Mail will then know to pull these specific messages into my account.
However, this is one of a handful of problems that I have been having with the Mail application. Just today I tried to create a new message by hitting NEW and the program crashed. This plus having all of my messages disappear and then having to reimport them isn't worth the effort. I've decided to stop using Mail completely.
I was just told about Mozilla's Thunderbird email application. It's free and looks better than Mail. Do yourself a favor and go check out Thunderbird at:

  • How do i get email messages back into mail

    hi,
i recently deleted some email accounts that i no longer use but forgot to save the email messages first. i managed to locate the emails on a backup that i made. i now have lots of .emix files, each of which if i double click them open up so i can read the email, but i cannot find a way of getting them all back into Mail so i can search etc. ideally i want to create a new folder in Mail called Old Mail and get all my .emix files into that folder, but whenever I try and drag and drop them into the folder Mail won't do anything. I don't want to just restore the backup as I have since received emails in Mail from my other accounts, and don't want to lose anything. Any ideas what I need to do?

    Hi
Use the "Import Mailboxes" function in Mail > File menu and follow the instructions
Mail Help - enter "Import" has some info as well

  • HT201342 How can I back up mails from my other accounts to my iCloud account?

How can I back up mails from my other accounts to my iCloud account?

iCloud doesn't back up email.  If you are using an IMAP email account your email is stored on your email provider's server.  Your iPad backup only backs up your email account settings, not your email.

  • Can't import mbox file back into Mail

    Hi,
I archived my "sent messages" folder two months ago, and it became a mbox file of 5GB.
Now I as trying to import it back to mail, but it doesn't work.
I went to "Import Mailboxes", and selected "mbox files" in the Import window. Then I clicked "continue",
and chose the "sent messages" mbox file (user library > Mail > Archive mail).
Smaller mbox file appear in the next window, but this large one doesn't.
Does anyone know if there is a way to get access to this data?
I would be very grateful to get some hints...
    Thanks.

If this was archived from Mac OS X Mail, then choose "Mail for Mac OS X", not "mbox files".

  • Back Up Mail Server

    Hi,
Is it possible to set up a back up mail server to receive mail when the primary mail server is down and then once the main server is up then deliver the mail to the user.
    Thanks ,
    Luke

Is it possible to set up a back up mail server to
receive mail when the primary mail server is down and
then once the main server is up then deliver the mail
    to the user.
This is a great thing to outsource to a third party: often your domain name registrar will offer free backup mx, or you can use a free service like DynDNS to do it.
    http://www.dyndns.com/services/mailhop/backupmx.html
If you want to do it yourself on a Mac OS X server box, there's no check box in server admin - you need to get your hands dirty with the Postfix config file. Have a look at the postfix.org page for this:

sounds like in the mail it broke

  • Can I move Mail (Lion) files back to Mail (Snow Leopard)?

    Hi,
I've encountered a screwy problem and am wondering if there is an easy fix.  I have an iMac at the office that is now running Lion, and a MacBook Pro at home running Snow Leopard (which I am keeping there for now because of the Quicken issue with Lion).  Anyway, my laptop hard drive totally failed (still trying to recover the data but have been unsuccessful so far...worst drive failure I've ever encountered...even TechTool Pro tech support couldn't help) and I lost literally 10s of thousands of emails over the last many years.  I have the vast majority of those emails on my iMac, but the file structure is all changed now so it is not straightforward to just copy-paste folders from the iMac (Lion) to the MacBook (Snow Leopard).
I can think of two tedious ways to move the files:
    1) Actually burrow into the ridiculous level of folders in the Lion Mail structure and copy directly...but I'm not willing to spend that time for 10s of thousands of emails.
    2) All prior years emails are in folders "On My Mac" on the iMac, so I can re-upload the emails via IMAP and then download them to MacBook...but this is tiresome.
That said, is there a way to easily backward import the Lion Mail files to Snow Leopard Mail?
    Thanks,
    - DC

    Hi everyone,
I was able to import my Apple Mail after downgrading from Lion to Snow Leopard.
    Here is what I did:
    - In Mail, click Mailbox > New Mailbox.
    - in the New Mailbox dialog box, select "On My Mac" as the location and give it any "MailboxName" you want. Click OK.
    - Now in Finder, open Library > Mail > Mailboxes > MailboxName.mbox. In the MailboxName.mbox folder (where MailboxName is whatever name you gave the mailbox), all you'll see is an info.plist file. Add a folder called "Messages".
    - Go to the location where you've backed up all of your email from Lion and drill down to the Messages folder where you have all your .emlx files. Copy all of these .emlx files and paste them into the new Messages folder you've created (i.e., at the Library > Mail > Mailboxes > MailboxName.mbox > Messages location).
    - Go back to Mail. If you open the new "MailboxName" folder under "ON MY MAC", you'll see that it is still empty. Snow Leopard Mail can't read the .emlx files from Lion Mail. But we're not done yet. There are some more steps.
    - On the Mail File menu, click Import Mailboxes.
    - Select Apple Mail and click Continue.
    - Browse to Library > Mail > Mailboxes, select "MailboxName.mbox", click Choose, and then click Done.
    - Snow Leopard Mail will now import Lion Mail. It creates an "Import" folder in Mail under "ON MY MAC". Expand the Import folder and you'll see a a folder with the "MailboxName" you selected. When you open this you'll see all of your mail items that came from Lion Mail.
    - You can repeat the above for each mailbox you want to import.

  • Can't Copy Messages/Mailbox Back Into Mail

    Hi,
Something strange is happening, so I'm hoping someone here can help work it out. This is what I did:
    (1) In Mail, I had a sub-folder (Folder A) on my Mac. It was annoying me (because it was a sub-folder and I wanted to make a full folder), so I ...
    (2) Copied the Folder A.mbox to my desktop and then deleted the sub-folder in Mail.
    (3) I've been trying to move/copy the messages and/or mailbox back into Mail from my desktop but it won't budge. I've tried opening a new folder in Mail to paste the messages into, tried to import them, but nothing works. They're stuck on the desktop in Folder A.mbox.
    (4) the .emlx messages themselves are not corrupted as I can open them individually from the desktop. I can move, paste, copy them everywhere BUT Mail.
Does anyone here have any idea what's going on, and how I can move Folder A back into Mail where it belongs?
Thanks for any help or advice.

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
In earlier versions of Mail, each xxxx.mbox folder had its own index (different name for the index in Jaguar and earlier vs Panther. In Tiger, there is only one universal index, spanning all mailboxes -- this was done, most likely, to benefit Spotlight.
Thus, using the Finder, in pre-Tiger OSX, you could place a xxxx.mbox into the Mailboxes folder, and when you next launched Mail, it would find the newly added mailbox, and all would be well.
In Tiger, you can no longer simply move in a new xxxx.mbox, nor replace any xxxx.mbox folder, because the indexing will not recognize it, without an additional step of forcing Mail to reindex ALL mailboxes, by removing the Envelope Index -- you can force this to happen, by finding the Envelope Index file at the root level of the Mail folder, and removing (after having Quit Mail). When you then relaunch Mail, it will announce that is ready to import your mailboxes -- allow this to happen, and it will really only be reindexing all your mailboxes, including any into which you paste the xxx.emlx files, from any xxxxx.mbox folders that have been created with Mail 2.x, or that you have dragged into the Mailboxes folder.
In Mail 2.x, you can import mailboxes from any folder of xxxx.mbox folders (created with Mail 2.x), selecting only those you wish to copy, and these become additional xxxx.mbox folders in the Mailboxes folder, and the Import function takes care of the indexing issue.
    Keep us posted.

  • Switching from Entourage back to Mail...any suggestions

I downloaded Entourage and I am not happy with it, I want to go back to mail but I'm worried about the switch, anyone have any suggestions on keeping the previous emails?

If you have Entourage set up to use IMAP and leave messages on the mail server, all you need to do is simply not use Entourage any more. No big deal.

  • Where did RRS Feeds go and how do I get them back in Mail 6.0?

Just upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion and have seemed to have lost the capability to receive RRS feeds in mail.  Where did RRS Feeds go and how do I get them back in Mail 6.0?

Apple has dropped RSS Feeds from Safari and Mail.
As fas as I know the only way to get them back is a third party app.
I have found Vienna RSS to work even better then the old way with Safari and Mail.

  • Can I get color icons back in mail?

I have seen the hacks to get color icons back for Finder and iTunes. Does anyone know how to get them back in Mail?

If you right click on the Mail application in the Applications folder and choose "show package contents" then open the Resources folder, you will find the icons.  I don't recommend mucking with them but theoretically you should be able to modify them or replace them with ones of your choosing. Typically I'd test this idea out before posting (i.e., change an icon and see what happens) but I can live with the icons as they are and I don't want to mess something up on my Mac. Maybe someone will make colored icons and post them for others to install.

  • My Mail accounts in Mail Disappeared it restarted from hanging.  The mailboxes I found at the Library, how do I put it back into MAIL?

Please Help, My MAIL has been hanging, so I forced Quit the program, and restarted my iMac. When I opened Mail again, all the e-mail accounts both POP and IMAP accounts disappeared. Fortunately, I found the POP- Accounts in the library folder but I don't know how to link it back to MAIL.  Can somebody help me put my e-mail accounts back to MAIL.

I have tried several tests to see whether I could duplicate your problem. And so far I haven't been able to.
For example: I take my project files and drag them out of their project folder into a different drive (to the root level of the drive). Then I delete that original project folder. I create a new folder in the second drive and rename it to something completely different. I then drag my individual project files and folder into this new folder.
I repeat the process with the reference event – making a new, renamed event folder on the second drive and dragging the individual files into it. Then hiding the original event folder.
When I open FCP, it not only sees the renamed project, it is still linked to the renamed event.
So I'm not sure whether all that's encouraging or discouraging.
It seems to me that if you rename your original back up file (the one with the date) to Currentversion and then hide the other, it should appear in your project library in FCP.
As far as Time Machine is concerned, it all depends on your preference settings. Open TM and se what your last BU was.
    Good luck.
    Russ
